I am disappointed with lack of communication and organization at paws shelter. I put in an application for a Shih Tzu and was told I was second applicant, but was encouraged to apply.They screened me on my home, yard, and vet, and handed me a paper scheduling an interview for Tuesday, June 23. They specifically instructed me to bring my current Shih Tzu with me for a meet-and-greet. when I arrived with my dog for our scheduled appointment, I was told the Shih Tzu had already been adopted..I never received a call, an email, or any notification to save me the trip..it is completely unacceptable to have someone pack up their pet and drive all the way out just to find out their appointment didn't matter. I have volunteered at PAWS for 2 years now and I have the utmost respect for all who work and volunteers there all the animals there are treated better than most people treat their own pets I am one of the volunteers that take care of the cats and I love it. All the volunteers work with the animals 1 on 1 they get to go outside in a huge fenced in yard to play, run around and they love it. So dont pay attention to bad reviews because they are NOT TRUE!!! RUTHERFORD COUNTY- Your tax $ hard at work at PAWS. Yday we took 3 mommas & 7 kittens (semi feral) to them, the beetch at the intake told us to DUMP THEM after refusing intake. She literally said DUMP THEM because now since my friend had been feeding them they are considered "hers". Total BS. I was very pleased with our experience here. Growing up, I used to visit from time to time to take some of the older dogs outside on a leash to play. Now, they have different protocols and you can't necessarily just grab a dog to take outside, but that's fine. You must sign in, and if you are wanting to adopt there is a process to go through. I BACK THIS 100%. Any place who will just give you an animal without any sort of adoption process seems sketchy in my opinion and like they're just trying to make money. Too many pets are adopted and then abandoned, mistreated, or passed off to someone else because they couldn't handle being a pet owner in the first place. PAWS not only screened our family, but also held a meet and greet for us to bring our pets from home to see if they get along with the new fur baby. Once these things have been accomplished, they will spay or neuter your animal for free and you are able to come pick him/her up after a few days. The staff was friendly and helped me to the car with our new fur baby and his things (you get a goodie bag with toys, information, food, etc.). It's funny because we went in not even sure if we would find someone to bring home with us but instantly fell in love with Bruno who we've had for a year and a half now. If you live in Rutherford county, you can get on their waitlist for free spay/neuter services for your pet. Also, sometimes they do "free adoption Fridays" where they waive the adoption fees. If you are looking for a lovable cat or dog, please consider adopting one who desperately needs a home rather than buying a puppy bred to be sold. My brother & I found this dog roaming the neighborhood on Monday 3/27. My brother took her to PAWS but they said we needed an appt. So we scheduled one for today (3/28). Lastnight we took her to an animal hospital to see if she was chipped. She wasn't.  Ugh....bummer. We kept her overnight. Our appt was at 10:30am. We got there before hand & waited outside. We were at the door at 10:25am. We pressed the call button & the person behind the desk (Dakota Shelton) just stared at us. No acknowledgement. No nothing. I pressed the bottom again. Same response. We were staring at one another. Finally, my brother knocked. Dakota comes to the door & says, "We're processing another animal. You'll have to wait in your car. I'll come get you when we're ready." Um....OK. You could have said that in the first place. But whatever! We waited about 20 minutes & they finally waved us in. No greeting. No eye contact. Nothing. Just....."How can we help you." I explained how we found the dog. They asked for our ID. My brother didn't have his wallet. I gave mine. Dakota looked to his left & began speaking to someone behind a wall. Kristy Jackson eventually starts speaking loud & feeding Dakota questions for us.  My brother says, "It's ok, you can speak directly to me." She comes from behind the wall (no eye contact) & explains their policy regarding ID. Very monotone. Seemingly uninterested. No big deal. My brother lives less than 5 minutes away. I tell him to run get his license. Kristy says, "You'll have to reschedule & you'll need to take the dog with you." I inform her that I was staying with the dog & my brother would go get his ID. After my brother left, Kristy unhooks the leash from the wall, hands it to me (no eye contact) & says "You'll need to wait outside with the dog." I remain polite & take the dog outside. My brother returns & we're back inside. They were still very rude. Mid-conversation I asked both of their names. Suddenly attitudes brightened. Kristy actually got on the floor with the pup & making eye contact with us while smiling & talking. My brother was over it.  Dakota began apologizing to us for not giving clear instructions on how the intake works. We then inquired about the process of potential adoption (as my brother grew quite fond of the dog). Kristy explained that they would do a thorough intake to determine if the dog is indeed adoptable. If not, she will be euthanized & we would not be privy to know anything else. WOW! Not even 30 minutes after leaving, I logged on to the site & saw the info below (see pic below from agencies website... the other pics are from yesterday).  Feels like they've become very desensitized & could use some intense retraining on how to simply "people". A smile & a greeting goes a long way. Rudeness is unbecoming. When my brother stopped in yesterday after we found her, there were 2 other employees there. He said they were rude as well. Disappointing. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. Also, PLEASE get your furbabies chipped. I have a feeling that someone is missing this cute girl. She was well behaved. Followed commands. Walked great on a leash. No food aggression & played great with my 2 year old Bichon. I hope her owner finds her. The thought of this being a kill shelter sickens me. read more

STAY AWAY! I regret going here at all. Staff is not helpful, uninterested, and generally slow. Wasn't overly friendly to begin with and as I asked questions about the process, seemed more annoyed than anything. I found a sweet kitten and tried to find it a home, or a get it to a rescue place, but no luck. We couldn't keep him so I felt this would be a good way to give him the best chance. During the process, I was advised that they ARE a kill shelter but "only for serious medical or behavioral issues." I asked for details and was told maybe feline leukemia or other things where they won't have a good quality of life. But don't worry, the vet looks them over well and they're usually good. I tried pointing out several things about the kitten, like how he enjoys being scratched and held and in a stressful situation like this it would help. Mentioned several things and most weren't responded to. I asked if he could keep his toy, so he had something fun to play with. Silence, then ok they'd put it in a baggie for the new owner. I said might be nice for him to have while he's in a cage. No response. I felt less and less comfortable. I asked if they find any serious issues, can they let me know before killing him? No, sorry. Won't do it. "He's our property at that point and we won't do that." I was assured that he'd be fine though. When I got the paperwork to sign him over, I noticed that it was very vague and stated they do "euthanize when deemed necessary." I questioned it and said it's pretty open. How can I be sure this means only for serious issues? "The vet makes that call." Any question I asked was met with annoyance and was told they don't know, they can't/won't tell and the vet decides. I will never recommend them to anyone nor will I return. They did nothing to make anyone feel welcomed or wanted. They are not friendly and don't seem to want to help. I'm upset with myself for turning over the kitten but felt it was his best option but I regret it. Notice that their reviews are horrible. Their FB site doesn't allow reviews for a reason. They don't respond to any reviews either, and that should tell you something. Go elsewhere. DO NOT COME HERE!! read more

Went PAWS to get a pet! They would not let me adopt one. They also to many unneeded personal questions like do we have children in the home, will anyone be home all the time, and sense we had another animal in the home we needed to bring in vet records to show up to date rabies shot before we could adopt and they wanted to a letter from are landlord saying we can have pets! And a name and phone number of are personal vet all this to adopt a pet WHAT! So I went to Petco and in less than 20 minutes and my adoption fee paid I went home with my new pet! I want to believe that this place truly cares about animals..but I'm not sure anymore. I adopted a kitten a few weeks ago from here, she was about 4 weeks old. She was sick, and they spayed her. Within the next 2 weeks her health declined. I took her to the vet and was told that she really should not have been spayed that young, and she wasnt healthy enough to have that surgery done in the first place. They suggested that she had lost too much blood during that surgery, and that's why she was so weak. We tried vitamins with iron supplements to help her, but it was too late. She died about 2 weeks after I had gotten her. I have been emailing them for about a week telling them about my situation. I got a response at first, but now nothing. My heart is broken. I have a feeling had she not been spayed, she would've made it. read more

This is gonna be a long one but hear me out before you choose to surrender or turn in a stray or give them money. I found a young dog last night named Bella. I posted her on a couple FB pages and Pawboost. Upon all the shares and comments, one lady got in touch with me stating that she had found Bella just last week. She found her owner and returned her but told me that Bella was scared and didn't want go with him. I kept her overnight and after spending time with her I realized she has a terrible ear infection, honestly its severe. Her head was tilted most of the night, she kept shaking and scratching and whining. She is very skinny, spine showing and hips protruding with more than normally acceptable ribs showing. She is being starved and neglected. I was going to take her to the vet myself until PAWS called me back and said they are sending animal control to pick her up. They meet me and immediately recognize her and TELL ME that her owner does not care about her. They've been called on him before. He mistreats her. I go on their website just now and see her picture is posted with 'Found as stray, looking for owner,'. Can anyone tell me why they are even looking for him knowing how bad of a condition she was in? This is ridiculous and it makes me so angry. If the owner goes to reclaim Bella, she will be back in a neglectful home. The thought makes me want to cry. PAWS is a joke, please do not take your animals here. Theres a reason it isn't 4 stars. read more

Located parallel to 1-24 on John Rice Blvd in Murfreesboro, Tn. It is a very nice shelter with cat condos in the front lobby and dogs to the right in kennels. Online it states that it is a no kill shelter. Talking to the 2 young women at the desk they said they euthanize when the pet is very aggressive or very sick. When you walk in the girls behind the counter rarely ( went to shelter 5 times) look up or try to assist you if you have questions. When Roberta the volunteer is there she goes out of her way to answer questions and to assist you. We found the young girls to be rude due to they did not want to be helpful. The staff (girls) were always on their computers working. If their jobs entail them to be way to busy to assist adopters they should be in the back and have one person in the front who greets people with eye contact and a smile. We adopted a cat and had to pull teeth to get info from the 2 young girls about the cat. They did not make adoption easy at all. The vet supposedly had assessed this cat and gave it a clean bill of health. We took it to the vet and she had ear mites and round worms. They had treated her for parasites but she was still infected. This place beats other shelters that stink. We would adopt again from there but they need to learn customer service. read more

PAWS is what this place is. I saw an ad for a puppy on their site online, so, I went down there. No puppy! All the small dogs I saw online weren't there. All older, large breeds and mostly pit bulls. It didn't smell like people had said and seemed clean and animals seemed well taken care of. The lady at the front desk was nice and helpful, although the dog I wanted she said had been long gone. My only complaint is for them to keep their page more up to date. read more
