TL;DR: Tax preparer lies to me, obliterates my taxes, then bails on me…read more My first contact with Rene and The Busy Bookkeeper was on 1/27/2020. I wanted to get our taxes done and get our refund early. She said I could bring my hard copy tax documents to her office and she would scan them and get started on it. Sounds good! 2/01/2020 I brought my hard copies but she was not there when she said she would be. A child answered the door and said she was getting her nails done. I reluctantly gave him my docs and he promised to put them on her desk. I now curse myself for that decision. 2/16/2020 I had not heard back from Rene, but assumed she was working on my taxes. I sent an email and got no response. 3/27/2020 Rene finally sent us a link to a client portal. It has now been a full 2 months since first contact and I still have been unable to retrieve my hard copies back despite me only living a few miles away. There have already been several excuses. Keep in mind that I could not decide to hire someone else at this point because she had my documents. On 3/30/2020 she requested a few more documents which we got back to her by 4/08/2020. I had called Rene a few times and she was SO BUSY with her business clients. I started to wonder why her business clients got put before me even though I had hired her so early, and my taxes are not very complicated. 4/21/2020 I still had heard nothing from Rene, and I was trying my best to be patient. It has now been a full 3 months(!!!) since first contact. The following is correspondence by email on 4/21/2020: Me: "Hi, Can I pick up my hard copies please? I haven't heard anything from you in a while. Are the taxes done?" Rene: "Yep you are done- it got caught on one of the SSN for one kiddo- I re entered it and it was accepted." Me: "Great! Does today work? I can text you when I'm there and you can throw it outside for me?" Rene: "Yes" Then a couple hours later... Rene: "...I'm going to run a few errands...." (More excuses!) 5/07/2020 I email AGAIN to ask to pick up my hard copies. We have not received our refund yet and I am looking for a direct deposit daily. When I go to pick up the hardcopy documents because she has made herself available for me to pick them up finally, SHE INFORMS ME THAT THE TAXES WERE NEVER DONE. So for the last couple weeks while I'm waiting on a refund, thinking everything is great...I mean, did she think I was just going to go away and disappear if she avoided me? First she says something went wrong with my childs SSN. Her suggestions to me were maybe her assistant entered it wrong, or maybe someone has stolen my childs identity. I am just so frustrated with this woman at this point that my brain turns into a fog. She hands me a file with all of my tax documents and tells me that it could not be done digitally and that now I would need to send it by mail. She tells me she will not charge me. (Charge me for what??) She didn't even have the decency to mail it out herself. When I got the taxes home, I couldn't believe my eyes. My son was marked as a daughter with an incorrect social. This was such an unbelievably inept thing to do, and easily avoided with one phone call to me to confirm information! 5/14/2020 I am driving to Renes office, appointment or not because I had had enough of this. I reach her while I'm driving and tell her the incorrect information I found, hoping that she can resubmit digitally with the correct data. I can almost hear hamster wheels turning because she is already throwing out more excuses. When I get there she hands me a new folder, with an IRS address in Utah. She throws her assistant under the bus and says she did it, it's basically her fault. Then again with her conspiracy theory about the childs identity being stolen, REALLY? I immediately sent the taxes out to the IRS. Since then I have contacted the IRS no less than 8 times waiting up to an hour each time. One IRS agent told me this was Renes fault, and that the IRS address Rene gave me was not even the appropriate address. Because of that, and because of Covid, it has been a FULL YEAR since I first contacted The Busy Bookkeeper and I still don't have my refund. I had to get a tax advocate to open a case, and now I'm being told my 2019 taxes will hopefully be done by the end of March. My 2020 taxes might get done before my 2019 taxes. I will happily go back to my reliable tax preparer who charges more. I would only recommend Rene's tax preparation services to my enemies.
