I needed to pick up few things and found these folks on Yelp with good reviews, so I took a drive. I bought some terminal gear and weights and asked about boots. They had Xtra Tuff brand but did not have the taller boots I wanted in my size. I asked about price and was told 109.00 for the tall boot and 129.00 for the short boot. I thought it was odd that the boots would be different prices. I don't remember what reason the sales person gave me(?) I ended up going to Turners and picked up my boots for 79.00, which is the same price at West Marine (a store I consider expensive) And both tall and short boots were the same price. Went to Performance Tackle to ask a question about a specific custom wrap and setup. Immediately was greeted by Mark and staff. Mark took the time to explain the difference and positive/negative. During our conversations, he went to the back and pulled out different custom made rod to show me. We started talking about setups and gave me a different perspective. Every question i asked he answered. So, I ended up ordering a custom rod from them. Super stoked on getting my custom rod. Thank you Mark and the staff at Performance Tackle! After having many, many discussions with a co-worker, I decided to take up surf fishing. Only problem was that I didn't have the gear for it. Cruised around many tackle shops (Sav-on, Youngs, Takas, Turners) and they were all great, but I found the staff at Performance to be the most helpful and professional. Most 8 1/2 to 9 ft rods were going for about $100 at all the other shops. Marc at Performance told me he would order a decent Daiwa Heartland 9 footer for me for $50. Score. Matched it up with a medium Daiwa Crossfire reel for $30. Filled one spool with 8lb, and the extra with 10lb., both p-line. Got some red Owner Mosquito hooks size 2 and 4, some gulp sandworms (bloody and camo). I had all the other necessities like weights, swivels, swimbaits etc. Total was just over $100. All the staff were very knowledgeable about how to surf fish, where, what to use, what to look for etc. Went out for the first time the other week to Sunset beach and hooked an undersize halibut on a red 3" big hammer swimbait. This is the best tackle shop in my area. The inside is much bigger than how it looks from the outside and their selection is excellent! You can find almost anything here related to bass fishing, surf fishing, or offshore fishing. Other than having a wide variety of lures and equipment, they also sell a lot of rarer items you can't seem to find at other local tackle shops. I wish they carried the Trout Traps and Trout Stingers in their trout aisle, but that won't keep me from coming back. The guys who work there are all cool and helpful. If you live in the 310, 562, 714 area, I suggest you check these guys out if you haven't already. read more

This place rocks! I only fish about 4 to 8 times a year on average so I try to get the most for my money while not buying the cheapest equipment. I believe the guy that helped me was either Scott or Curtis. He was very professional and didn't try to sell me anything that was not needed. He also recently set the record for huge trout using only 3 pound tes while river fishing. My second time here Manny helped me and he too was very friendly and knowledgeable. I have been a very satisfied customer of Performance Tackle for several years. My passion is Long Range Tuna fishing and I have had the excellent staff build me several of my prized rods, service my reels (as anybody who does this knows: you just don't let "anybody" service your reels), purchased wind on fluorocarbon leaders (when I am too lazy to make my own) and essentially purchase all of my terminal tackle here from ringed Super Mutu hooks, Salas Jigs, Wahoo setups, line harnesses, etc.. You name it, they almost always have it in stock and, if not, they will be happy to order it for you and call you as soon as it comes in. If you are a bass fisherman, sir or madam, you have died and gone to heaven. Talk to the owner Marc H., he knows bass fishing. I have purposefully avoided getting into freshwater bass as I wish to stay married and am pushing the financial limits as it is with long range tuna fishing. Nice spacious shop with very knowledgeable and friendly staff. I really enjoy browsing through the store and the staff has answers if I have any questions. Wow! I finally made the drive to go check out Performance Tackle! I had heard that it was a great store but I live in Oxnard and rarely have an excuse to drive south to Los Alamitos. Finally had to bite the bullet and make a special trip and...well...WOW! I was impressed. From the outside there is not much excitement--and I was a little worried I had just wasted two hours on the freeway--stepping inside I was quickly rewarded. Performance is a good name for the store. It describes the friendly professional staff and the bright well organized product presentation I really appreciate in a tackle store. I was able to quickly and comfortably locate things that I had not been able to get at other stores much closer to my usually paths of travel....at good prices too! It might look a little small from the outside but it is BIG on the inside in terms of space, quality, selection, and sales knowledge. Not only were the sales team available and ready to answer any question but Mark the owner was on hand as well. He was very generous acknowledging me as a customer and offering great tips. He was sincerely interested in making sure I had a good experience not only in his store but also on my fishing trips deep water and surf, local and long distance, he had the s***! (excuse the expletive but you know what I mean!). While I was shopping and sharing stories with the staff I also got a glimpse of the back store work area. This place offers the whole pie! Complete rod, reel service and custom builds done in dedicated qualified efficient manner I could tell just by looking at the set up. Checking out tackle stores is kind of a part time hobby for most fisherman like myself. Tell you what--not a problem driving right past all the other tackle shops between here and Oxnard--I will definitely do it again and again to visit Performance. read more

I have a !0' 6" G Loomis Steelhead spinning rod that I really like except that it had the dreaded Tennessee Rings to hold the reel in place. The rings would never stay in place and the reel, especially when fighting large fish, was not entirely secure. I discovered Performance Tackle and within a week they were able to regrip the rod complete with a Fuji reel seat. Now, all is well with this rod. From this initial experience I would recommend them. read more

As others have stated, this place is upper echelon...the staff and Owner actively engage in conversations with you and always ask to offer their help. I'm from Ventura and it does not bother me one bit to drive to this tackle shop. They have a great selection of my favorite soft plastic swimbaits. No other tackle shop has a wider selection Pearl Swimbaits. I load up whenever I'm down there. They also built me 2 custom Performance Tackle Swimbait sticks, which are simply awesome. What a great surprise! This store is so much bigger than it looks on the outside and so friendly and full of the great stuff that works on the inside. That is one thing I noticed right off--they don't waste space on 'crap' and you know what I mean the poor quality glitzy nonsense that might make money but won't serve your needs. They stock the right stuff for a wide variety of applications surf, deep sea, fresh or salt you name it, priced right AND they have the product knowledge and experience that makes shopping easy and enjoyable. The people who work there kind of know what they are doing (not really). They just recommend bigger gear to get more money. They charged me $50 for just 100 yards of braid. I went to a near by place and got 300 yards of 80lb braid for $29. I would recommend any other place than here. I am not coming back to this place. If you don't know exactly what you need, don't be afraid ask, they will give you expert advice and the best rod on the market. If you have good rods that are worn and guides need to be re-wrapped, this is your place as well. Performance Tackle can do it all, from fresh water to salt water. Have been shopping at Performance Tackle for several years and up to now, was very happy with the service and products. Last week, I was going out on an overnighter from Point Loma Sportfishing and so I stopped in with my 20 and 30 lb. setups to get new flourocarbon topshots. Service was friendly as usual and I picked up about $30 worth of Owner hooks while I was there. First bite of the morning, I was into a fish and very little drag being pulled. After about 20 seconds the fish was gone and I thought that the hook had pulled and I just hadn't waited long enough on the chew. Reeled in and found the flourocarbon gone! The knot had given way and had parted from the spectra. The deckhands looked at the line and asked, "who put this on for you?" I told them and figured it was just a fluke and went to my 30 lb. setup for the rest of the trip, but fish were line shy and I only got two fish. When I got home, I called and relayed the story to Performance Tackle and was told: 1. We don't charge for the knots. 2. We can't be reliable. I think he meant liable, but can't be sure. 3. If you guys don't like it, you should learn to tie them yourself. (Maybe true) 4. There is nothing we can do and we aren't replacing your line. Conclusion: I'll shop elsewhere. Charkbait and Sav On have been very good to me over the years and I don't want to lose any more line or fish. read more
