What we would be fishing that day how to rig up. And how fast we need to get a jig in the water after they're spotted. It was extremely helpful to be able to hear every word the captain was saying. I landed a large bonito on the bow because I knew I had to act fast. Hearing every word the Captain says makes during the whole trip made a huge difference. Another thing I noticed that upon boarding the restroom smelled lemony fresh. I've been on clean boats and not so clean boats but never lemon fresh! There was also upbeat music playing as we fished and it definitely made for a fun party-ish environment. Last but not least, Yellowtails on the half day! That alone would have made the trip excellent but the cleanliness, atmosphere and audio system made the trip even more enjoyable. I caught a small size one, but there were others on the boat who caught very nice ones. Bait was plentiful today. Thank you everyone on The City of Long Beach for an excellent trip.

My family of 4 went out for 4 hours of fishing and it was great - we caught a variety of fish (calico and sand bass and a sculpin). We kept a few and had a yummy lunch! Deckhands Eric and Bryan (Cook?) provided excellent service, quickly assisting everyone even before being asked, I noted them scouting the desk to see where they could help. We never made it to Catalina Island but had fun fishing the Oil Rigs catching yellowtail, skipjack, bonita and such. Last trip about a week ago bait was very scarce. I guess they found them but they were were huge sardines (smaller ones may have been more effective as we kept retrieving chewed up bait fish) that died fast, guessing no curing time. Obon and I both lost a couple of yellows after lengthy battles. Tip: any weaknesses in your game, will be exposed in monster yellowtail battles, make sure your knots are tight! All in all, it was a great day out on the water and I want to thank the El Patron crew for making it happen.

Really disappointing experience on the El Dorado…read more The boat seemed seriously understaffed, and the deck service was slow and disorganized. But the worst part was that they actually LOST fish that had already been landed. These weren't fish that broke off, got away, or were lost during the fight. My buddies successfully caught their fish, got them onto the boat, and turned them over to the crew. By the end of the trip, those fish were simply gone. My buddies literally walked off the boat EMPTY-HANDED after successfully catching and landing fish because the crew could not locate them or explain where they went. Imagine spending the money, putting in a full 2 days on the water, successfully catching your fish, and then having absolutely nothing to take home because the boat lost your catch after it was already onboard. That's beyond frustrating and completely unacceptable for a sportfishing operation. Most of the crew came across as unfriendly and dismissive. I'm not expecting a luxury cruise--I'm on a fishing boat. But I do expect decent customer service, enough deckhands to reasonably help anglers, and for fish that have already been caught and landed to actually make it back to the dock with the people who caught them. There are too many good sportfishing operations in Southern California to deal with this.

The shop is simple and hard to park at but when you walk in you realize that you have hit an absolute treasure of products to satisfy the fresh and salt water angler of this area. Known for his surface irons the volume of colors and sizes are staggering and all at 30% or so of the main competition. Thing is, you don't need to worry about if they swim and picking out the perfect ones like you do with the others, Caivo's are all guaranteed to swim and have the right action in the water. If you are looking for the slim, sold type jigs, he has a bunch of those as well. Yo-yo jigs, irons, feathers, lead heads, plastics, sabiki rigs, sinkers, hooks, if you are looking for local favorites for really great prices, this is the place for you. I appreciate Jimmy not just for the products and the scope of what he offers but the man works so hard and is a well known staple in our community. Will absolutely be back.

This appears to be the southern most part of the South Waterfront Bike and Pedestrian Path. Fishers bring their families and children ride their bikes and scooters on the path. Today, we caught zero fish, but it's still a cool spot. Nice and breezy. Also loud from the noise from the Port of Long Beach. The cargo train runs through there, can hear whirling and buzzing of drills, and the lift and lowering of the cargo containers. Interesting sight, but it's not ideal for those who want serene aquatic sounds...

Definitely booking another trip soon!…read more The booking process was a breeze and the marina was conveniently accessible from the parking lot at the Hotel Maya. We were quickly checked in (make sure you arrive early), suited with our gear, and briefed on the plan for the day. Renting gear from Jetski Fishing was perfect because we didn't have to haul extra stuff to/from the parking lot. Our guide was very knowledgeable about fishing locations and provided great guidance throughout the trip. We hooked some keeper sand bass within the first hour. After 15 minutes or so of inactivity, our guide had us start up the jetskis and we rode at 40 - 50 mph to our next location (you don't have to go that fast, but when in Rome...). Our group fished around a couple of spots at the second location, but the catches had to be released due to species restrictions. We then bolted to our last fishing location where I hooked on to a thresher that snapped my line. And just like that - our trip went way too fast! Some recommendations: - Read the info email from Jetski Fishing after you confirm your trip (everything you need to know is in it) - Bring sunglasses (because the future's bright), sunblock, snacks, and drinks - Bring a fully charged phone, connect to the Bluetooth speakers, and play some tunes (fellow AT&T users: I was at one service bar most of the trip, so I wasn't able to stream itunes or Pandora) - There is plenty of storage space for a backpack, jacket, and small soft cooler - Take advantage of the 'filet your catch' option - Don't forget your GoPro (the views and marine life are incredible) Catch some 'Fresh Ones' and tip your guide!
