The Driveway off of 7th Street is easy to miss, as the sign is small. I've been fishing the Ocean and Freshwater for many years. I started fly fishing about two years ago, but only gone two trips. Well, I thought I was fly fishing just fine and catching fish during my yearly backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. A co-worker had taken beginner's casting lessons and had recommended for me to take the classes to improve on my casting. I had visited the facility on the night during a club competition. I saw the fun and camaraderie the fly casters were having. I located the beginners casting class in Long Beach Casting Club's website. The club is the home to many local Master Fly Casting and FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructors. On premises are a casting pond and the club house. Stadium style lights are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings. Class starts with lecture and videos inside the club house, then they are divided into four groups and each group has several instructors to help students with their casting for the evening at the casting pond. The classes run about five weeks, and each week they teach a different cast. Classes start 7pm sharp, so if you are late, you will miss the 15 minutes of lecture and videos. Each week, you will have the same group of instructors who will help you with your casting and any questions you may have. The first night they go over with suggestions on proper equipments, Fly Rod, Fly Reel, Fly Line, Fly Line Backing and Tapered Leader. Class suggest that you have your own equipment, 9ft 5/6wt balance outfit as I brought my lightweight 7.5ft 3wt outfit that I use for my backpacking trips. If you need assistance in assembling the rod, reel, and/or fly line, the instructors will help you, just bring them in at least 30-40 minutes before the class starts. They teach the proper rod grip, Pick up and Lay Down, False Cast, Roll Cast, Shooting Line, Off Shoulder Casts and Line Mending. I thought I knew how to cast a fly line, but I was amazed how much I improved after each class. Anyone can attend these classes, men and women, if you have a desire to learn. I am happy that I had taken the classes at Long Beach Casting Club. I now have more confidence to tackle the Eastern Sierras, Lakes, streams and maybe Bone fish on a fly during my next vacation. The Long Beach Casting club also has rod building, fly tying, on-the-water outings and intermediate fly casting classes. If you are a seasoned caster, but need any help, stop by as previously mentioned, they have instructor or advanced students that can help.

The only thing (danger) you need to look out for is overhead and side aggressive rod n' reel "casters" and those who use multiple hooks where it feels like potential hazard and an accident waiting to happen. We use squid as bait and it's resilient to the water and waves. It's good for families and kids, but come early to get a spot and avoid the sun. It's good for maybe 1 hr for kids to inevitably get bored or frustrated, but for adults chillin' almost like playing a round of golf where conversation and relaxing is a big part of a social activity, you can stay for hours, just bring a chair. Also, bring a hat, sunscreen, cold water and snacks. Parking (for free) could be easy if you know where to look, read the signs and are willing to walk. The people there are generally friendly 'tho we did encounter a few territorial grumpy older men, par for the course and not spoilers of a good time for us.

So many wonderful activities including swimming in the lagoon, hiking, running, sunbathing, picnicking, bird watching and native plant hunting. There's even a model boat club on the premises and lots of resources for education. The parking lot meters are in effect 10 am to 4 pm; free street parking is also available. This is truly an amazing free resource for all of Los Angeles.

We usually always get into a great bite and the service is top notch by Captain Wes and his crew. The galley has a coffee maker, microwave and large fridge for storing your food. I typically take bread and rolls along with a large selection of deli meats for sandwiches and other snacks and it's perfect for an overnight trip to the islands. If you want to get a charter I suggest you schedule your trip's very early in the year! This boat is extremely popular for a reason, they are simply good at what they do. If you are a real fisherman this is the boat for you, they try hard. Many nights I've seen Wes and the crew stay up all night trying to get us live squid so our fishing day will be highly successful. Please remember the gratuity for the crew too and they will skillfully fillet out your fish and bag it up for dinner. My overall rating is 5 Stars!

Deckhands Eric and Bryan (Cook?) provided excellent service, quickly assisting everyone even before being asked, I noted them scouting the desk to see where they could help. We never made it to Catalina Island but had fun fishing the Oil Rigs catching yellowtail, skipjack, bonita and such. Last trip about a week ago bait was very scarce. I guess they found them but they were were huge sardines (smaller ones may have been more effective as we kept retrieving chewed up bait fish) that died fast, guessing no curing time. Obon and I both lost a couple of yellows after lengthy battles. Tip: any weaknesses in your game, will be exposed in monster yellowtail battles, make sure your knots are tight! All in all, it was a great day out on the water and I want to thank the El Patron crew for making it happen.

But the worst part was that they actually LOST fish that had already been landed. These weren't fish that broke off, got away, or were lost during the fight. My buddies successfully caught their fish, got them onto the boat, and turned them over to the crew. By the end of the trip, those fish were simply gone. My buddies literally walked off the boat EMPTY-HANDED after successfully catching and landing fish because the crew could not locate them or explain where they went. Imagine spending the money, putting in a full 2 days on the water, successfully catching your fish, and then having absolutely nothing to take home because the boat lost your catch after it was already onboard. That's beyond frustrating and completely unacceptable for a sportfishing operation. Most of the crew came across as unfriendly and dismissive. I'm not expecting a luxury cruise--I'm on a fishing boat. But I do expect decent customer service, enough deckhands to reasonably help anglers, and for fish that have already been caught and landed to actually make it back to the dock with the people who caught them. There are too many good sportfishing operations in Southern California to deal with this.

Whenever I had a question, they were always helpful. Even had the guys filet our fish for us for an extra charge. My son had fun and also enjoyed watching the RC car tracks that are immediately next door when we got done. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice experience with your kids. But it was closed when we arrived before 1pm. My 13 year old son went on to politely ask the man on site, whose name is David, why it was closed, but was rudely criticized by him. You don't want our business, fine. But you should not discriminate people by their gender and age, especially when they want to give you business. We will never come to this place. The small parking lot on PV Drive, just past the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, is marked by a sign, see photos. There's a building with restrooms next to the parking lot, both of which are open dawn to dusk. A trail leads down to the water. I posted a dozen photos. It was an exceptionally nice day to take in the views. Veteran's Day is an honorable day, as well as a somber day for me, so it's no accident I was hanging out in parks today. I chose some of the most beautiful ones I could think of, as they are inspirational to me. Parks are places of honor. They are almost always dedicated to a person, or people, who have served their communities, their country. And throughout the parklands we discover benches, rocks, and even trees bearing dedications & memorials. The parks along the coast were filled with people today and they seemed more quiet than usual. The general overtone was one of respectfulness. At day's end, as I notice a brilliant, almost-full moon, I'm reminded that I can best honor those who served, including those who have fallen, by living the best way I know how. And for me that's all about appreciating nature, and life.

I feel sorry for the people who walk around here for a nice stroll. The water smells like sewage and the mulch smells like manure. Well we know for sure it will be open in summer of 2028 because the Olympics games will be held at this location. Maybe I will get my shortcut in 2 years. 2028 can't come soon enough!
