My birthday chain with no lights. My camera adjusted it too bright.

We did this at night for my cousin's birthday. We were running late and since it's a bit tricky to find, got there later than expected but they were nice enough to still let us ride. Don't look for an office just to to the dock behind Ballast Point Brewery. It was cool the first 20 mins then it turned into a workout. The lifejackets we got were wet, so being there at 9pm, that added to the chill factor. My cousin, the birthday honoree, was given a bike that had half the lights on! He got on last and I wish he would've asked for another bike. The man getting us situated was nice but a bit hard to understand, even if I speak Spanish lol, and we weren't given a map. Luckily I found one on their website that I screenshot. Unfortunately, the area I wanted to go to was too far, it took us 40 mins just to get there considering we were a bit lost even with the map. It's hard to tell where you're going at night. So we didn't do the little roundabout by the homes and just headed back. I would do this again but can't imagine during the summer or we'd sweat even more. I think I would try the sunset one next time.

So I'm gonna be completely honest. It was different from what I was expecting. We were completely lost at first trying to find the place. I wish there had been more signs up to direct us or like a map sent via email with info beforehand or something. And I thought it was gonna be a group thing where everyone goes out together at the same time, but it's just you and whoever you bring going out together. It was also more scary and intimidating to get on these water bikes at first than I was expecting, especially with the water looking like the black lagoon. But once we got on and were on our way we had a fun time and the view was beautiful. The speaker was definitely needed for the vibes. And it will be a leg workout. Wish we moved faster with all the pedaling we were doin but once we made it out by the homes with pretty lights it felt like we were coastin in a dream world. It was a beautiful memorable night, I will definitely come back again with a cute boy one day. But I might wear some booty padding next time because me and my cousins booties were sore right after and for the next 2 days following lol.

    Gorgeous day out!

So much fun! I took my Mom, she's always wanted to bike ride but never got a chance to learn AND she LOVES the water so I thought, "heck why not put her on a water bike?!" LOL well, glad to report we had a TOTAL blast! The water is very lively! We counted 7 boats where the captain or his passengers waved at us! It was super cute everyone was having a great time! Many gorgeous birds with massive wings, some even scooping fish from the water (I was devastated at first but c'est la vie). Cute tadpoles swimming near the deck! Plus, I think someone recently proposed on the water because I found roses (on the stem) floating! The service is great though I will mention some of the younger workers have sort of a non communicative style and their answers don't necessarily give you a boost of confidence lol the older and possibly more experienced workers who we met on our way out are really fun, sweet and knowledgeable. All in all a great time and activity!

    Sunset!

I went back this past weekend, and it was as great as a year ago! Me and my boyfriend went when it was at 4:30 pm so we got to see the sunset together for the first time. It was so relaxing and the perfect weather. The staff were kind and friendly as always! This time around it was easier to bike (turning out of the post, and coming back). Can't wait to take more of my friends here next year! I always recommend this spot to anyone in the area from out of town!

Pretty affordable with very open availability. I recommend going at sunset. You get both the day time and night time beauty. Just note that it is a bit of a workout lol so i suggest brining something to drink with you and either take your own speakers or rent theirs. I give it a 4 because your a little far from the beautiful houses

    Birthday Fun!

Great exercise Great service Great activity A lot of people were doing it & it made us think we could do it & so we did

If you want a unique water activity look no further than Long Beach Waterbikes. This is such a fun thing to do. The staff is incredibly kind and responsive. If you join their text program you can get a free birthday ride. You do have to use the ride within a certain time frame. You can find free parking in the lot where the check in is located. Once you get down on the dock you'll sign a waiver and get a life jacket. We did the hour day time ride but the glow ride at night looks really cool as well. I am not in great shape but was able to do the ride for an entire hour. My family is already talking about doing this again. I would definitely recommend this!!

Ask the Community - Long Beach Waterbikes

The area we ride, is the waters safe? No whales or sharks? Has anyone tipped over from marine animals confrontations?

Yes of course its safe, no marine animals are in this area

    Is there a weight restriction?

Hi! Yes. 250 pounds. One person/hydrobike.

    How long is each rental?

Hi Jennifer! You’re on the water for an hour. Check in is 30 minute prior to departure.

Are there any age restrictions? Can you be 17 and ride?

Hi! As long as there is someone that can sign for you and be on the water with you that is 18 or older. More info at lbwaterbikes.com/faq. Kids age 4-9 can ride as a passenger as long as total weight limit does not exceed 250 pounds. Other than that… Read more

Dress code? Can a dress be worn? Shoes?

Probably with a jacket. I didn't get wet whatsoever. You should be ok.

Omg do I have to get on a scale with my friends around to know I'm 250 or under?

Nope! Just be sure you’re under the weight limit. It is for your safety.

    So I can't ride if I'm over 250 pounds. I am 270 ish?

That’s correct. The weight limit is 250 pounds. Hydrobikes lose stability if over 250 pounds is on them. Under 250 pounds and they’re extremely stable.

Are you guys ever gonna make bikes for bigger people at least 350lbs?

Hi Kayla! We don’t manufacture Hydrobikes. We buy them and rent them out.

    Are life jackets provided?

Yes ! They provide life jackets :)

Is it safe in the night time ? is there gonna be sharks swimming where we will peddle?

Not open ocean. You'll ride in Alamitos Bay.

How long can you ride the bikes for?

Hi! Each reservation is 1 hour.

Can you do this is you don't know how to swim?

Yes but it’s required that you wear a lifejacket anyway.

Can't my pregnant girlfriend be able to ride one? Any restrictions because of pregnant?

Hi! We don’t recommend it but best to ask your doctor.

Can my toddler ride with me?

Hi Katherine! No. A child must be able to reach the pedals to ride.

    Do you guys take pictures?

    No not at this time.

How much is it? Is it per hour or a flat rate?

Hi! It’s $25/person/hour for day time and $30/person/hour for glow rides at night.

How old do you have to be to ride a waterbike?

For the best answer to this question, visit lbwaterbikes.com/faq

When is the early bird special?

We no longer have an early bird special.

How much is it per person?

    Day Ride - $25/person/hour Glow Ride - $30/person/hour

    Is it totally free?

Totally not free. But there is a way to ride for free. You would need to volunteer for trash pickup using the waterbike. It occurs once a month on a Saturday.

The trip there takes about an hour and a half and was quite pleasant since it was an extremely hot day in LA. No wetsuit was needed, but we did take the ones they offered with in case we needed it during the trip. - this is a high impact sport. We definitely didn't realize it until we were on the water, but even though the water was relatively calm on the way there, it's a workout holding on to the jetskis as the bounce pretty hard over swells. - getting there was a workout, but getting back was HARD. Muscles were tired and bodies were sore from the way there, and getting back was windy and cold and choppy (even though it started as a very hot day in LA). If I had my way, I would do the trip on the way there and take a ferry on the way back but I doubt that's offered. - they have wetsuits which are not mandatory to use but if you don't want to use it when you leave, it is probably a good idea to take anyway and store in your jetski in case you change your mind. I do regret not putting it on for the way back as it was cold (but hot on Catalina). People have mentioned the wetsuits were gross. They seemed fine to me. - others have mentioned to bring gloves, watershoes, goggles. Those would probably all help, but I didn't have any and it didn't affect me that much. Gloves might help the chaffing between thumb and forefinger when holding the jetski which bounces up and down a lot, but I didn't find chaffing too bad. Watershoes would help chaffing on feet due to said bouncing and wearing sandals. Again, I didn't find that too bad. Goggles help if your eyes are sensitive to the salt water constantly splashing in them if it's windy. I wore sunglasses and got a lot of water in my eyes, but I guess my eyes aren't that sensitive to salt water. Overall we're glad we did it as a family as it makes for a great story but once is enough.

That said, this trip was both exhilarating and disappointing at the same time. Similarly to what I've read elsewhere, some small adjustments (like a one way jetski trip to Avalon and come back on the cruiser) may have made this a 4 star experience. My husband surprised me with this for my birthday. I'd looked into it previously and had been interested in doing it but the pricetag is substantial so I hadn't taken the leap. As such, I did not have much time to prepare for this in advance. NOTE TO MEN: DO NOT SURPRISE YOUR PARTNER WITHOUT ANY HEADS UP - NOBODY WANTS THAT UNLESS YOU HAVE THOUGHT OF AND PLANNED FOR EVERY NEED & CONCERN THAT MIGHT ARISE (you probably can't - give your boo some advance notice). This operation is super low direction and guidance. The most important things I heard were: stay between 30-35mph to glide best on water and that this would be an adventure. And an adventure it was... Arrival and check in were easy enough (I cant speak to registration and information sharing before arrival). We were given wetsuits and lifejackets and then we were all loaded up on jetskis (which is when those two nuggets of wisdom were provided). The direction from there is minimal and you really have a lot of slack to get out there and have a blast. That said, holy mother was that intense! The way there wasn't so bad. I flew off the jetski once and one of the two guys with us helped me back to my jetski. He (Zack) was definitely the more communicative of the two (the other was Jet) but it definitely felt like they were there to check off some boxes (get us there and back, take some pics, etc). I was tired and had blisters on my hands by the time we were heading back, the water was choppy - more choppy then I expected. I was so scared. It's intense and I was terrified of being flung back into the (busier) ocean. I wish that there had been some dialogue, some acknowledgment of the challenges of the journey, maybe some tips to get through it the best possible. There wasn't any of that and I spent the whole way back praying I make it home safely. That, coupled with the fact that the harbor and surrounding ocean in Long Beach is so disgustingly dirty, will make this a one and done kinda deal. The blisters on my hands were several skin layers deep and the bruising (pictured) tell the story of just how intense this really was.
