I recently came here with my aunt, at first kayaking wasn't something I was very open and interested in doing. Coming here definitely changed my perspective on kayaking and when I tell you that I had one of the funnest times with LA River Expeditions, I mean it! From the moment I arrived, the friendly and knowledgeabl staff made me feel right at home. They provided such detailed instructions and safey guidelines. ( that were also super beginner friendly! ) The LA River itself was honestly such a surprising journey. i was immediately captivated by the stunning urban landscapes surrounding the river. To be clear, I give the activity of kayaking on the LA River 5 stars. I've done it 3 previous times with 2 other concessionaires, both at Sepulveda Basin and Elysian Valley. I wanted to take this particular kayak tour because of George Wolfe -- he's the OG Los Angeles River advocate and is the reason why we get to go on the river in the first place. I'd seen the documentary film about his effort to prove that the LA River is navigable, and I've been following him since. I figured George wouldn't be our guide, but I was thinking that whomever he hired would share his ethos and represent his story. Instead, I got the "Naked and Afraid" guy. That's right -- Gary Golding, a.k.a. Tarzan of Los Angeles. To his credit, he really made the kayak tour his own. But that's not what I signed up for. From our arrival, Gary had taken on a sort of drill sergeant persona with the safety briefing, rattling off all the reasons why past kayakers hadn't had a good time or complained -- all the reasons we'd say we hated him but we really should be hating ourselves. Honestly, this wouldn't even have been appropriate for a group of novices (this was a mixed-levels tour and my friend and I are both experienced kayakers) and certainly not for a group of kids. Thankfully we were all adults and tried to take it in stride. But for me, it really set the wrong tone. When we got to the turnaround point, Gary had us bunch up for an educational talk -- one that consisted of his diatribe about how our sole purpose in life is to conquer plants. That may be true, but we sat stiffly in our kayaks for too long while he was on his soapbox, and he did a good job of presenting himself as a certified kook talking about cancer cures. What did this have to do with the LA River? Not much. It was all about the guy who "lives off the land in LA." It was the Gary Show. Our guest speaker Jaime from Metabolic Studio tried to bring the topic back to the LA River, but in this case the pendulum swung too far in the other direction since his organization is focused on the arts and not naturalism. There were so many opportunities to talk about birds, fish, and other wildlife as well as addressing the homeless problem and trash cleanup efforts. Instead, we heard a lot of boasting from Gary, who kept interjecting during Jaime's talk. Honestly I would've preferred no talking at all and just kayaking. In the end, I didn't fall out or drown. I paddled back and forth and saw a number of great blue herons, a green heron, baby ducks, and a couple hawks (as well as a nesting killdeer, which Gary disturbingly reveled in agitating and then brushed off any criticism of it). I got some good exercise and I reconnected with the river. But there were a lot of factors that detracted from how good I know the experience can be. I give it three stars instead of 2 because I thought that the other staffers (Joe and Jason) were wonderful and helpful and deserve plaudits. I think it would be helpful to list who the guide is ahead of time so you know what you're in for. I'm assuming the rest of the guides don't have the same schtick. Much of our group seemed to enjoy themselves, but it just wasn't my thing... even though kayaking the LA River IS my thing. read more

If you love Los Angeles and all its contradictory beauty, this is for you. It was nature & gritty all at once. An authentic LA experience! Los Angeles has this amazing combination of natural beauty and urban grit that is what makes it so special. Yes, kayaking in the LA River is a surprisingly serene nature experience, but it is also urban grimy. I think I paddled past at least a half a dozen shopping carts, and several very large elaborate homeless encampments. But I also saw a great blue heron take off spectacularly just yards from my kayak. So many birds, fish, and even heard a bullfrog. It was very green and lush and peaceful, and yet the Van Nuys airport noise was occasionally overhead. A beautiful incongruity that is why I love where I live. Kayaking the LA River with this company is a must for any adventurous spirit! I had a great experience with booking and taking this tour - everything went perfectly, although one piece of feedback would be to add signage near the meetup site, as it can be a bit confusing to find your way to the launch area. All equipment is clean and well made. The instruction for beginners (like me!) is thorough but not overbearing. Our tour guide Gary was knowledgeable, kind, encouraging, and lots of fun. Tips: Bring more drinking water than you think you need. Don't bother with socks, you will get your feet wet before even getting in the kayak. Bring a change of shoes. SUNSCREEN & HAT! If you want to take photos of your experience, go get one of those waterproof phone protectors at REI. Get there early if it's your first time so you have time to get lost and confused on your way to the launch site. And above all - keep your eyes, ears, and mind open to fully appreciate the experience! read more

Such a balance of an educating , entertaining and simply engaging human with the best insight ever. His Knowledge left me feeling like i just a took a course on all the wild living river plants, bird and all their natural healing properties. Great to submerge ourselves in some wildlife. Tho the shopping carts, tires and array of plastic pass you, it truly brought more light to our boat ride. This was one of the worst outdoor experiences I have ever had. The reviews and pictures online are incredibly misleading. As an LA local and as someone who has fought hard to gain more access to the outdoors as a Latinx, first-generation person, I was incredibly disappointed by the poor facilitation, condescending attitude by the "guides", and general dirtiness of the equipment and River. The LA River is understandably not the cleanest, however, the experience was poorly planned and facilitated which in turn created an experience that just felt like you were kayaking in dirty sewer water with no guidance or warning of just how dirty the area is. Myself and a group of 5 of us were also incredibly bothered by the inability of the guides to even look us in the eye or give us the courtesy of explaining things to us or checking in on us that had an undertone of racism and homophobia. As a Latinx person who came with other BIPOC people, it was clear this experience was not welcoming for BIPOC people who often do not have the same experience or familiarity with outdoor recreation. The guides failed to properly facilitate or explain anything about the area in a way that truly informed on safety protocols, the quality of the water, and how to stay connected to restoring the LA River and river conservation work. They had issues looking us in the eye when we asked questions and failed to check in on us despite one of us getting hurt/ spraining their back. As someone who works in climate justice, particularly around environmental justice in cities, I was disgusted by the poor treatment and lack of consideration for the queer, BIPOC people in the group. Outdoor equity means ensuring your programming is inclusive of various identities and familiarities with the outdoors and making sure people want to come back. I can honestly say no one I came with is interested in going back. This organization severely lacks an approach rooted in intersectional environmentalism both as a theory and a practice. Top 5 Issues: Terrible facilitation and explanation of what to expect and how to prepare both before, during, and after the experience. From the beginning, there was bad communication on what to expect, prepare, and what the plan for the experience was. Additionally, one of the guides made judgemental remarks about peoples' clothing that were rooted in seemingly racist and homophobic comments. There was no clarity on how to properly use the gear and paddles as well as what to do when encountering rocks or crashing into trash while on the LA River. It is not intuitive or fun to feel like you are seconds away from being flipped over into dirty water with no support from the guides or even awareness of what to do should that happen. There was no sense of purpose/goal/ objective for why we were kayaking. The river is not beautiful since it is unfortunately littered with trash and debris. I was looking forward to hearing more about efforts to restore and clean up the river, but was not given any information on restoration and conservation efforts. Any questions asked were often unanswered and it became clear that our guides really couldn't provide any helpful information to make sure folks were able to plug into large conservation work. The trip was led by white people who did not acknowledge the Indigenous ancestry of these lands or even the general history of the area through a racial, political, and/or ecological lens. Instead, the guides "showed off" by going barefoot into the (very dirty) water and told us to "check out the local coffee shops." There was no explanation of the types of wildlife or what the plans for the river are. Zero information was given besides pointing out local coffee shops. All of the equipment was dirty and in bad condition - from the kayaks to the helmets to the vests. Everything was dirty and unclean. Complete lack of racially and gender diverse staff. Also the staff were not friendly at all. It really just felt like paying $80 to sit on a kayak in sewer water. It felt like being scammed. read more

What a great activity! I had never been kayaking before, and was nervous of falling in the water. The guides were great at giving instructions before we got into the water, and answered my nervous questions. The tour was near the Sepulveda dam, and the water was exactly the challenge I needed. It was a great place to learn to kayak! By the end of the trip I felt confident and am planning to go again with friends! They supplied the kayak, a helmet, and a life preserver so I just needed to show up. I did get wet in the seat, but they warned that it would happen. They offered to lock up anything I didn't want to get wet and I'm glad I left my car keys and phone with them. Next time I'm going to bring a waterproof bag that lets me take photos of all the birds! Paddling the LA River! LA River Expeditions and the great conservation work they and founder George Wolfe do and practice all year is best experienced in the summer paddling expeditions down the river. We started at Rattlesnake Park and paddled through rocky sections, short rapids down chutes, and took out at Egret Park about 2.4 miles downstream. At the take out at Egret Park, you ride a well worn mountain bike back to the start, which in itself is a great part of the experience. We learned a whole lot from George, our guide, and friends got the river navigable, got it EPA visible and then protected, and detailed hands-on mini lectures at stopping points on the river about the flora, fauna, and birds. Not class 4 or 5 rapids, but maybe one better: a real river in the heart of Los Angeles! You usually have to get your tickets early in May or so, as they sell out completely very early in the season, but this 2015 year might be different if at all due to the low water levels and SoCal drought. Do this paddle if you can! It's one in a lifetime! read more

What a fascinating journey down an untouched, and amazing stretch of the LA River! You would never believe you were kayaking down an urban waterway as the vegetation is lush and the river is tucked away in its own little world, free from the hustle and bustle of the city. Our guide, Gary, was terrific and as a survivalist (Allstar contestant on Naked and Afraid), he was so informative about native foliage and how you could use plants to heal and to sustain life. There were also some very cool waterfowl along the way and a giant blue heron gave us a real show along the winding river. This experience was amazing and although I have never kayaked before, we were given a mini kayaking lesson and I had no trouble handling the kayak and the trek down the river. I would highly recommend this opportunity to see a slice of LA in it's original and natural grandeur. read more

What an awesome experience! I signed up on Eventbrite, it was 45 dollars. I attended the 3:30 session. It's a little tricky to find parking its location at the intersection of Sepulveda and Woodley. Make sure you have your waivers printed and signed beforehand. Wear waterproof footwear. Consider bring additional clothing for changing. You will need sunscreen and insect repellent. It was my very first time kayaking and I had a little difficulty but the instructors were super helpful especially Chelsey. It was a nice experience. There is quite a bit of litter in and on the banks of L.A. River. The tour guides were knowledgeable regarding the wildlife, plant life, and history of the river. The waters were calm and up to 11 ft deep. It was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I do recommend this place and I would come back. read more

Most had never kayaked before and they all had the best time! It was a hot day in the San Fernando Valley but cool and refreshing on the river. I participated in this past Saturday's Elysian Valley area portion of the LA River kayak experience with LA River Expeditions. Start to finish, it was a fun and engaging 2 hours. This section of the river has more greenery and birds than the upper section; just note that this section involves more work. There are small rapids, many rocks & reeds to navigate around, and had to exit & pull our kayaks along the riverbed at one point. I joined up Sunday June 2nd after watching Rock the Boat and being very intrigued with the LA River Expeditions crew and mission, and the LA river in general. Registration process was simple (I hear it was tough before), price I think $63 all in. Kayaking the river was a great experience, and unexpectedly challenging. The 'Burbank Narrows' stretch has swift flowing water, making for class 1 rapids. Everyone flipped or fell in at some point in time. You need to be willing to paddle hard, get dirty, get wet, get some scrapes and be sore the next day - I know I am! The water is extremely shallow, so every rock is an obstacle that needs to be overcome. You're constantly trying to weave your way through the rocks, looking for the best openings. The riverbanks are concrete, but the river itself is filled with lush green islands, obscuring all trash and making you feel you're someplace else. The water quality was cleaner and better than expected as well - mostly treated water from a treatment plant. LA River Expeditions did a great job. Wonderful guides, well organized, friendly folks. So if you're up for a challenge and want to do something unique, give them a try. Note that this year many other outfitters will be starting paddling trips on the LA River. I had a lot of fun on a terrific paddle of the Los Angeles River Glendale Narrows section with George and his crew at LA River Expeditions. They conduct their expeditions with an eye both to safety and adventure. The event was well-organized, we had plenty of critical information in advance, and the guides were both knowledgeable and courteous. If you are thinking of doing this kayak adventure, keep in mind that it is an 'expedition.' You will be toting your kayak down to the river's edge and portaging it back up to the waiting van at the end. You will also be riding a bicycle on the LA River Bike Path upriver for about 3 miles to return to the check-in location following the paddle. In addition, many sections of the River at this site have low water levels and rocks, so you'll be paddling hard and trying not to get stuck there. On the other hand, there are four great 'rapids' for some terrific 'e-ticket' moments. Best of all, you'll see Los Angeles in a whole new way - green, lush, with lots of birds and wildlife in view. This event is best for children aged 12 or older and adults who are in good physical condition. Ahhhh...Summer. Each year I look for fun things to do with my family that are different and out-of-the-ordinary. We live in Santa Monica so every day can be a beach day. It would be easy to be lazy and just grab some towels and stare at the sky! But, LA is an amazing and diverse city so taking some time to explore all of the cool things is an adventure...and that's why we decided on LA RIver Expeditions. Kayaking in the City?? Sign me up! I'm from Texas, love the water & outdoors and now as parent and a Girl Scout leader, I believe that kids need to get outside and will thrive on adventures that aren't in front of a video screen. I'm also a wife whose husband is a city guy -- kayaking isn't his first idea on a Saturday! So it seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring those two things together. Here's what I loved about LA River Expeditions -- the crew, the people I traveled with down the river, the wildlife and the opportunity to see the city from a different perspective, In other words - everything! Don't expect this to be the Kern or the Toulemne...it is the city and there are rocks and shallow parts and concrete in places and a bit of trash (I picked some up along the way to do my part!) but George and his son and all the volunteers are passionate and friendly. To me, George is an Urban Hero and we need more of those in our lives. Our 12-year-old was a little nervous when she saw the "put-in"...it looked a bit fast and she had to learn how to navigate her kayak. But George, his son and our fellow kayakers were patient and kind. By the end, she was speeding along with her paddle and the rushing waters in parts of the trip were really exciting and fun. And, taking the bike ride back was even more fun. The whole experience felt wonderful and home-made. That's the entrepreneurial spirit I love! For those who have never kayaked before, don't show up thinking you will be dry at the end. And kids should be at least 10 I think as you do tend to get separated on the river at times. Afterwards, the team recommended we eat brunch at the local stop HOME which was a great suggestion. I would definitely return and bring friends! read more

Love having the river open for public access, but these guided tours need a lot of work. Most of the other kayakers on the trip had less than zero kayaking experience, yet there was almost no training provided to them. This resulted in a terrible overall experience for them and other kayakers. I spent most of my time try to avoiding others who had no command of their kayak or waiting for them to struggle through basic maneuvers. Add in the poor guide skills and organization, what should have been a 2.5 hour kayak trip turned into more than 5 hours of sunburned hell. Support efforts to bring back the river, but you're better off renting your own kayak and avoiding this floating disaster. read more

Solid four stars. This was a lot of fun. A really great activity that is both mellow and exciting. The perfect level of "adventure" without much risk. There are lots of low rapids to keep it interesting. Will make you proud of the LA river! Lots of wildlife to be seen with knowledgable, friendly guides along the way. Communication among the guides and to the participants could be tightened up a bit (and I'm sure they'll get much better as time goes on and they do more of these expeditions). There were three guides on our trip. Two of them were great. Calm, patient, really nice, very encouraging, gave clear directions, had everything under control. The third guide was a little overbearing. She didn't seem to communicate well with the other two guides. They'd have everything under control, and have the group (or a portion of us) moving along, but she wouldn't always know what they were guiding us to do, and start shouting for us to stop, or don't go any farther, etc. At times, this made things confusing and was kinda annoying. But, that barely dampened the fun. No pun intended. Okay, pun intended! Wear the best-gripping shoes you have that you don't mind getting wet. You'll need to touch bottom at several points (including walking down the launch point) and it is very, very slippery. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must. Also, bring a water bottle that you can secure to the boat. You'll be glad you have something to drink and will have opportunities to sit and take a swig. All considered, it was GREAT. My boyfriend and I are now going to buy kayaks and do the river on our own as a result! read more

Highly recommended! We arrived at 7am and after a short orientation, were in the river negotiating small rapids and savoring idyllic calm stretches for about three hours total. We had three guides and the group was a range of paddling experience levels- from zero to well experienced. It was easy enough for an active 8-year old, but exciting enough to satisfy my penchant for class 5 rapids (if only minor heart racing). The guides wove an educational thread throughout and we left knowing how important the recreational aspect of the river can be to improving the water quality and environment. This stretch of river is truly a world away from the grit and grime of the city we see every day. Be prepared to get wet, to walk your boat in shallow sections and to avoid swallowing the water. Mind fisherman's lines and note that there is a little work at the end to haul the boats up the bank and to bicycle back to the starting point. All in all, kayaking the L.A. River is a unique thrill and gives a glimpse of what a greener L.A. looks and feels like. L.A. River Expeditions does a great job making it happen! read more

This is my fourth trip over the course of three years. The equipment and the logistics and coordination have been much improved and have taken advantage of lots of learning and employing local neighbor input and restrictions as well as convenient parking and efficient conveyance via Uber. The walk from the Home Depot adjacent lot to the Uber pick up provides a great view and gritty perspective of the urban renewal in progress. The Glendale Narrows trek is beautiful, challenging and not for the faint of heart. This is real work -- and requires a positive attitude and a smile. We had a fun group and were in capable command of spirited guides, Anthea and Gary. Highly recommend for those up for something new and adventurous. read more

It is because of organizations like this that the La river exists. They fought the giant Army Corps of Engineers and their staff of rubber stamping biologists to win protections for the river. What baffles me is why are those government losers still working at the agency when they were clearly trying to pull favors. read more

Just finished the tour with LA River Expeditions and they were awesome! Very helpful and friendly staff. We kayaked the Sepulveda Basin and it was hard to believe we were still in LA. Highly recommended! read more
