What a way to kickstart my birthday morning! My daughter and I enjoyed every moment of it - and having Gary guide us made it even more fun (and - bonus - informative). Will recommend to anyone looking for an adventure that's off-the-beaten-path, but local!

Paddling the LA River! LA River Expeditions and the great conservation work they and founder George Wolfe do and practice all year is best experienced in the summer paddling expeditions down the river. We started at Rattlesnake Park and paddled through rocky sections, short rapids down chutes, and took out at Egret Park about 2.4 miles downstream. At the take out at Egret Park, you ride a well worn mountain bike back to the start, which in itself is a great part of the experience. We learned a whole lot from George, our guide, and friends got the river navigable, got it EPA visible and then protected, and detailed hands-on mini lectures at stopping points on the river about the flora, fauna, and birds. Not class 4 or 5 rapids, but maybe one better: a real river in the heart of Los Angeles! You usually have to get your tickets early in May or so, as they sell out completely very early in the season, but this 2015 year might be different if at all due to the low water levels and SoCal drought. Do this paddle if you can! It's one in a lifetime!

Such a great staff, Really patient and helpful as well. Even if You don't have any experience in tours like this one, They will explain everything to You. SO You don't have to worry about anything. I had so much fun. That's a kind of experience that I would like to repeat.

An absolute must do for any angelino that needs a different perspective of our city. My sons loved it, and it was great for a novice to get to enjoy nature and learn from the tour guides. Thank you Kelly, you made an educational experience so much fun

What an awesome experience! I signed up on Eventbrite, it was 45 dollars. I attended the 3:30 session. It's a little tricky to find parking its location at the intersection of Sepulveda and Woodley. Make sure you have your waivers printed and signed beforehand. Wear waterproof footwear. Consider bring additional clothing for changing. You will need sunscreen and insect repellent. It was my very first time kayaking and I had a little difficulty but the instructors were super helpful especially Chelsey. It was a nice experience. There is quite a bit of litter in and on the banks of L.A. River. The tour guides were knowledgeable regarding the wildlife, plant life, and history of the river. The waters were calm and up to 11 ft deep. It was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I do recommend this place and I would come back.

worst people and not enjoyable at all. Such a waste of money and when we got there, there was no water in the river.

Can I swim in the river?

The LA River water quality is safe to be in at the Sepulveda Basin location, however on our excursions you will remain inside the kayak during the tour.

We finally found the desk.  The flight rep told us it might take 3-4 days to get my suitcase.  Well - we were going on a cruise.  Who knew where we would be in 3-4 days.  The uniworld rep that I was with was on the phone between the ship's director and her counterpart at the airport.  After what seemed like hours, she told me that the other rep lived near the cruise port and would pick up my suitcase and bring it to the ship.  The cruise kept saying 'no' we were on our own.  Like I am the first person to have this happen to.  After a lot of back and forth, I thought everything was settled - the other rep would bring my suitcase to the ship - it was coming in a few hours on the next flight - 6pmish.  I was planning on a huge tip for the inconvenience and just for the niceness of it all. I thought 'wow' - what service.  What a great gesture on the employee's part. We get on the bus and we are driving away and on the freeway and my phone rings.  I was not about to answer it because I didn't know the number but I did.  It was the first rep - she then proceeds to tell me that I will be charged for him to bring my suitecase.  $400.  Do I agree she asks.  Well that's a fine time to ask me.  Was I going to have the bus driver stop and drop us off on the side of the highway to go back to the airport and wait for the suitcase?  What if I didn't answer my phone?  So I reluctantly agreed I felt I had no choice - so much for the tip. They kept saying the Airline would reimburse me - guess what - it's been over a month and I just got my denial from the claim to the airlines.  really?  bad information.   So that started the cruise badly.  One of our stops, it was non stop raining.  We spent the day in town etc.  We got back to the ship (and it was raining all day long) - my husband slipped at the entry way coming back in and landed on his back.  They had no rug, no sign etc.  1 of their employees was standing nearby and ran over to help but that was it.  Then you hear him telling everyone to be careful as they enter.  Nobody else checked on us. The food was pretty good and there was a lot to choose from.  What we weren't told (our first river cruise) - was that dinner/lunch etc was served according to the excursions for the day.  It is not a 'set' time and there is only 1 seating.  There was a family that some of their family members missed lunch because they didn't know it started and ended early due to the excursions. I know the times are listed on the daily sheet but it was very confusing - especially first time river cruisers. Breakfast was pretty standard and the same everyday but again, much to choose from.   The TV in the room looked cool as it was in the mirror but that was it.  We couldn't get it to work right - the few times we were in the room. The last few nights, some of the staff were getting ready to go on vacation at the last port.  Well, they were so excited that dinner took extra long and orders were wrong.  The staff was very friendly and nice - however, we wanted to go on top to see Budapest at night with the lights.  Our table was the first one in for dinner and the last one out.  It took forever.  The night before also, the server kept getting our order wrong.  We got a little fed up and just took what she brought.  I understand excitement but that was ridiculous and frustrating.   Although we had onboard credit, we really wanted to get some souvenirs from the ship - well we didn't have many choices.  There was no store and they had limited shirts etc.  No baseball caps or anything we could bring for others. The tours were pretty good with a lot of options.  They even had some for those that had mobility issues and walked slower so it was nice.   When we arrived i

In order for a water way to be protected by the Environmental Protection Agency, it must be proved to be navigable, and Paddle the River reinforces the safe keeping of our only major waterway from pollution by industries, illicit dumping, etc. LA Conservation Corps provides other excellent services by employing young people who need jobs & provides job training skills for those who really need those skills that they may not have acquired earlier in their education. Some of us were not skilled in maneuvering a kayak even after an initial briefing. So one of the staff members patiently towed the kayak with the person in it upstream. Of course, downstream, the kayak could just float back to the point of origination. All the other staff members were also friendly, helpful, attentive to what needed to be done. This adventure is for kayaking beginners so advanced participants will consider this course to be a breeze. This was my first time on the LA River downstream from the Tillman Water Reclamation plant which also provides water for the Japanese Gardens as well as water for the LA River in the San Fernando Valley. Traversing the river at that point, it seems natural w/ trees lining its banks, herons & other water birds, quietness where only the occasional bird call can be heard & light, gentle breeze can be felt. Hard to believe that sometimes only a few hundred feet away hidden behind steep river banks or dense brush that parking lots & buildings abound. Great way to sample another multifaceted aspect of Los Angeles on a leisurely weekend afternoon. If there is time before or after, visit the Japanese Gardens w/ views of the "Star Trek Academy" just a mile or so away. 4 Yelp stars.

They offer two tours: a 1.5 mile long one-way tour that takes approximately 2 1/2 hours and a short roundtrip that takes about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Tickets are $25 and $50, respectively, plus nominal fees and available via their website. In addition, the Hidden Los Angeles website occasionally announces additional tickets as dates become available. I did the long tour today and loved it. The kayaking itself is easy since you go with the flow of the river and the guides help you across the shallows (which is a lot of fun in and of itself). Along the way you'll almost certainly see egrets and ducks if not turtles, fish and heron. While pretty scenery, the real import of the program is in coming to appreciate the ways in which the taming of the river came to allow Los Angeles into becoming the megalopolis that it has become. Also, it's a reminder of the wilderness that still exists in and around this county of 10 million residents. For lovers of LA, this is a must-do if you're able to get a ticked during their short July-September season.
