Had a great trip to Catalina with captain Shant. By far my favorite chatter I've been on yet! Definitely recommending to all my friends.

What we would be fishing that day how to rig up. And how fast we need to get a jig in the water after they're spotted. It was extremely helpful to be able to hear every word the captain was saying. I landed a large bonito on the bow because I knew I had to act fast. Hearing every word the Captain says makes during the whole trip made a huge difference. Another thing I noticed that upon boarding the restroom smelled lemony fresh. I've been on clean boats and not so clean boats but never lemon fresh! There was also upbeat music playing as we fished and it definitely made for a fun party-ish environment. Last but not least, Yellowtails on the half day! That alone would have made the trip excellent but the cleanliness, atmosphere and audio system made the trip even more enjoyable. I caught a small size one, but there were others on the boat who caught very nice ones. Bait was plentiful today. Thank you everyone on The City of Long Beach for an excellent trip.

Review for City of LB boat…read more The crew are horrible. They are way more concern about fishing than helping out. Honestly the worse charter fishing boat I have been on as for as being friendly and making me feel welcomed. Including the Captian they are all rude and very disrespectful, almost to the point where it might seem they are prejudice. Their attitude is if you dont like my rules then get off my boat and their rules are I do what I want and your nothing to me. I been to most of the locals charters fishing boat and never felt so awkward being on a fishing trip.

Deckhands Eric and Bryan (Cook?) provided excellent service, quickly assisting everyone even before being asked, I noted them scouting the desk to see where they could help. We never made it to Catalina Island but had fun fishing the Oil Rigs catching yellowtail, skipjack, bonita and such. Last trip about a week ago bait was very scarce. I guess they found them but they were were huge sardines (smaller ones may have been more effective as we kept retrieving chewed up bait fish) that died fast, guessing no curing time. Obon and I both lost a couple of yellows after lengthy battles. Tip: any weaknesses in your game, will be exposed in monster yellowtail battles, make sure your knots are tight! All in all, it was a great day out on the water and I want to thank the El Patron crew for making it happen.

If you have any regards towards fishing either your a beginner or advanced fisher he's the guys for knowing how to fish for what your looking for. Not too long ago I went to ask for advice for particular bonito jigs and told me what worked. As a local of Lb and a regular costumer to this shop I should have made this review sooner. I consider Jimmy to be in epitome of a small family business providing amazing products at incredible prices to the community. The shop is simple and hard to park at but when you walk in you realize that you have hit an absolute treasure of products to satisfy the fresh and salt water angler of this area. Known for his surface irons the volume of colors and sizes are staggering and all at 30% or so of the main competition. Thing is, you don't need to worry about if they swim and picking out the perfect ones like you do with the others, Caivo's are all guaranteed to swim and have the right action in the water. If you are looking for the slim, sold type jigs, he has a bunch of those as well. Yo-yo jigs, irons, feathers, lead heads, plastics, sabiki rigs, sinkers, hooks, if you are looking for local favorites for really great prices, this is the place for you. I appreciate Jimmy not just for the products and the scope of what he offers but the man works so hard and is a well known staple in our community. Will absolutely be back.

The Driveway off of 7th Street is easy to miss, as the sign is small. I've been fishing the Ocean and Freshwater for many years. I started fly fishing about two years ago, but only gone two trips. Well, I thought I was fly fishing just fine and catching fish during my yearly backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. A co-worker had taken beginner's casting lessons and had recommended for me to take the classes to improve on my casting. I had visited the facility on the night during a club competition. I saw the fun and camaraderie the fly casters were having. I located the beginners casting class in Long Beach Casting Club's website. The club is the home to many local Master Fly Casting and FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructors. On premises are a casting pond and the club house. Stadium style lights are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings. Class starts with lecture and videos inside the club house, then they are divided into four groups and each group has several instructors to help students with their casting for the evening at the casting pond. The classes run about five weeks, and each week they teach a different cast. Classes start 7pm sharp, so if you are late, you will miss the 15 minutes of lecture and videos. Each week, you will have the same group of instructors who will help you with your casting and any questions you may have. The first night they go over with suggestions on proper equipments, Fly Rod, Fly Reel, Fly Line, Fly Line Backing and Tapered Leader. Class suggest that you have your own equipment, 9ft 5/6wt balance outfit as I brought my lightweight 7.5ft 3wt outfit that I use for my backpacking trips. If you need assistance in assembling the rod, reel, and/or fly line, the instructors will help you, just bring them in at least 30-40 minutes before the class starts. They teach the proper rod grip, Pick up and Lay Down, False Cast, Roll Cast, Shooting Line, Off Shoulder Casts and Line Mending. I thought I knew how to cast a fly line, but I was amazed how much I improved after each class. Anyone can attend these classes, men and women, if you have a desire to learn. I am happy that I had taken the classes at Long Beach Casting Club. I now have more confidence to tackle the Eastern Sierras, Lakes, streams and maybe Bone fish on a fly during my next vacation. The Long Beach Casting club also has rod building, fly tying, on-the-water outings and intermediate fly casting classes. If you are a seasoned caster, but need any help, stop by as previously mentioned, they have instructor or advanced students that can help.
