This might be the oddest review I've written, but I'm beyond excited to share my experience with McCrawls Redworms. Our household purchased 400 red wiggler worms to help support composting in our backyard. We recently built a greenhouse and have been working to grow our own fruits and veggies at home. After attending a class on composting, we learned that worm poop is one of the best ways to create a more nutritious soil. Insert: Stan from McCrawls Redworms. I can't think of something cooler than purchasing your composting worms locally. Stan sells his worms by hand count, and not by weight. Meaning he literally counts every last worm given to you. We took these bad boys home and let them go to town on all of our leftover organic items. I've noticed that composting goes hand in hand with juicing, since the wormies love the leftover pulp. Note that he only accepts cash for worms. I'd also recommend contacting him in advance of pick up since the business keeps limited hours. read more

I picked up 500 red wigglers to raise for composting. Stan was helpful with answers to my questions and so far the worms are doing well.

Purchased red worms this past fall from Stan. I received 3 containers of 100 worms each plus some worm castings as I wanted worms for my in-ground (well,in the garden bed) vermicomposter. This place is cheaper and more accessible than a number of places in the LA area. I recommend reviewing Stan's website and placing an order ahead of time over the phone. I've bought 1000 red wiggler worms on two separate occasions from Stan. I've utilized them in a 3-bin vermicomposting system with success. I called Stan ahead of time and arranged to pick up the worms, and upon pick-up the worms were bagged in moist paper shreds and ready to go! Stan asked me on both occasions what I was planning to do with the worms to ensure that he could answer questions I may have had to ensure as much success as possible. I trust that there were more than the 1000 worms in the bag each time because I could believe it just eye-balling the large clumps of worms. Plus the worms pretty rapidly reproduce and had yielded many baby worms in my 3-bin system. A better value than Uncle Jim's worms for sure! read more

Yes, it's true that his shop isn't easy to find. No sign and the shop has a different business name on it (Fluffy Puppy or Plushy Puppy?) Go by the address and you will find it in a small strip mall. Stan is very nice and knowledgeable. He cares about providing quality red wriggler worms (Einsenia Foetida) only. I purchased some online from different producers and received worms too young to reproduce yet and another batch in which most were unhealthy or dead. Scraggly, thin, discolored. A few recovered from the trauma of shipping but they are few. He provides Einsenia Foetida only which is perfect for me as I only want composting worms that stay put and no bait. An online producer sold me a mix and I am still weeding out the Perionyx Excavatus (blues) and Einsenia Hortensia (Nightcrawlers). I also am excited to find Stan so close to me where I could pick up same day to avoid the shipping process. Impressed that he HAND COUNTS and inspects every single one of his worms and generously adds a few more. His worms are plump, healthy and active! They quickly made themselves at home in their new bins. I probably won't need more as these guys should reproduce just fine but if I need more, I know where to go. Thank you, Stan! read more

Nice healthy worms were just right for my grandson's worm farm. They were small and none were dead.

I mentioned that I had a worm bin I wanted to add to an 8x4 raised garden bed. He suggested I needed 500 worms. Gave me advice on how to feed and care for them. I'm from AZ and had purchased worms before, I paid $35 for a bag of worms which turned out to be mostly smaller worms. These red worms were much bigger in size and for a better price of $25. Don't let the sign fool you, it's inside a puppy grooming location where he also makes beautiful jewelry. Bring cash. read more

This place is extremely hard to find. It is literally the best kept secret in Cypress. I drove by twice and couldn't find him because there is no sign outside. As I pulled into the small stripmall parking lot, I was still double-checking and triple-checking the address on my phone. As I walked through the front entrance, I was still scratching my head. As I was talking to Stan himself I was still hesitant as if I was on some clandestine mission. As I walked out with my bag of worms, I was still wondering what just happened. As I got home, I was still asking myself: "Did I just buy worms from a guy named Stan"? Is "McCrawls Redworms" codename for *GASP* something else?? Nope. They really are just worms. I promptly buried them in my backyard and never looked back. By the way, it's also impossible to look him up on Yelp's search engine. Let's see . . . "Worms"? No. "Earthworms"? Nope. "Nightcrawlers"? Thank you Stan - I picked up 2000 worms from you yesterday and put them in my new Hungry Bin worm bin last night. I was worried at first, many started to gather at the top of the bin. But looking now, only 6 that are still up out of the bedding on the side walls. So they must have gone down under and happy with what's there. I gave them some carrot/apple/celery/bell pepper pulp to start on. And how that they've gone down under, I spread it across the top more, and put on some wet cardboard on top of that. Would highly recommend buying direct Stan if you can vs. online. He hand counts his worms, so none of that discrepancy when you order online with how many worms are actually in a pound. His prices are also much better, and he gives such great advice. The worms were in a cloth bag with perfectly damp paper inside. And as soon as I brought them to my bin they were super active and clearly very healthy. Stan McCall owns "McCrawls" selling Red Wrigglers (Eisenia fetida) for vermicomposting. He has a shop inside Plush Pooch Grooming, so it's a bit hard to find. You'll see that he is a lapidarist and has a gorgeous collection of opals and many other cabochons in his cabinet. It turns out selling composting worms is a hobby on the side. I asked him for a pound of worms, and he was so friendly and helpful. He had an active bin with two trays in the store. He took it apart showing me the difference in the trays and also some food he'd put in for the worms (chocolate chip cookies, rice, and a burrito!). I was surprised that the bins had no odor whatsoever. This is good news since I haven't informed my husband I'm setting up the tower of worms & decomposing food in the house.. In a couple of months I plan on turning kitchen scraps and leftovers into compost for the garden where the whole cycle will start over again. read more

I recently started a vegetable garden and couldn't believe it when none of my plants died. I've gotten so into it my friends joke that I need an intervention. I started to segway into composting cold bins and learned about vermicomposting and found myself purchasing a Worm Factory 360. (which is a great product btw) Anyway I wanted to buy worms sourced locally when I found Mc Crawls Worms. After setting up my bin, I read voraciously online and was convinced that I'd screw up everything terribly by the time I actually picked up my worms. Stan completely put me at ease and gave me helpful tips as far and managing my little mini universe/Eco-system for my 1000 new friends. A note to anyone who gets lost like I do; if you exit off the 91 fwy once you hit orange make a left turn and its right next to the closed down gas station on the left hand side in a doggie salon. Stan is very helpful and a great resource if you are having any issues with your composter (like I did). Great to be able to source worms locally. I bought a worm composter online with worms from Uncle Jim's worm farm. The worms seemed very small but there were a lot of them. I followed the instructions and put them in a place with a light on them for a couple days but they kept crawling out of the bin and LOTS of worms died - what a mess! After a week, it stabilized but then I think that I had lost so many worms that I accidently overfed them because a couple weeks later seemed like most of them were gone. Then a week after that they were all gone. I did not realize that they all crawled into the bottom tray and died. I decided to try it again with local worms and found Stan online. Based on my discussion with Stan, I'm pretty sure that I overfed the original batch of worms which he says is death to worms. I introduced Stan's worms to the compost system a couple days ago and they seem to be assimilating much better. He said that his worms are used to living in paper bedding which helps. None have tried to crawl out of the bin so far so this alone is a huge improvement. Also the worms seem larger likely because they did not get dehydrated during shipping or they are just better quality and more of them. It was also helpful to see Stan's system to see the correct moisture level in the bin, etc. read more
