Update as of 10/9/2008: I went to Perfit Alterations to alter a bridesmaid gown. She informs me that the work involved would be too much and that I may as well buy a new dress since she says no alterations will work to fix this dress. (Mind you, David's Bridal advised me to go a size up to get room for alterations.) Anyways, because I trusted her, I took what she said seriously. I was also really freaked, given the severity of the advice she provided. Yet, after researching this further by going to other seamstresses in the city, all of the ones I went to told me the seamstress at Perfit was wrong, and worse, even lazy! Honestly, I would have preferred the woman at Perfit to tell me she didn't want to do it or that she couldn't do it instead of saying what she said. Minus three stars. The remaining two stars is for the fact that you can still hem pants pretty well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It pains my mother that I would even pay $10 to hem my pants when I can easily drive up to San Francisco for cheaper prices. But considering the gas prices these days, I don't think it's that much of a bargain to go up to SF for alterations if you live in the Peninsula. The ladies here are wonderful. And the prices aren't even that bad. It's understandable that they can charge higher, given the area, the lack of competition, and the type of customers you see here. The lady who works there is really nice. Brought in a pair of pants once that she didn't think needed to be hemmed and told me so. I subsequently got a couple of jeans hemmed (original hem) which looked good. Pricing not cheap but not the worst I've seen (around $20-25 for OH). I was looking thru Yelp for a place to have my new suit altered for a wedding in early December and ended up choosing Perfit based on the feedback. There expensive than most alteration shops, BUT, the quality of their work was top notch. I had my jacket and pants altered for $78. The jacket wasn't brought in as much as I was hopping for, but it still looked great. I know the first instinct is to think these guys are over-priced but they're not. The two ladies did excellent tailoring on several items including a jacket that was too big. In fact, I suggested one way of doing it but they found a way to achieve the same result but cheaper. When I compare them with the prices at Nordstrom, they're in line with them and less expensive unless you buy full-priced pants then hemming is free there. They also expertly repaired several cashmere sweaters for me. I would have been crushed to have gotten rid of those. On the one hand, the ladies at Perfit do a great job. I've had them do jeans, shirts, and dress pants and I've always been extremely impressed with the quality. Of the ~20 things I've brought here, I've never had to bring things back or have anything re-done. That's usually not the case with other tailors I've used. That said, they are not cheap, and depending on the service, can be flat out over priced. I am a slim guy and almost always need to have dress shirts taken in on the sides to avoid having the "winged" look. Most tailors will charge between $12 - 17 for this. Perfit charges $24. That's way, way too much for that service. Price concerns aside, quality of workmanship is excellent. The shop is clean and convenient and the ladies are exceedingly friendly. Over the last few years, I have brought over 10 pairs of jeans here for hemming. I am very much into denim and care about what my jean hems look like. For the most part, they do a good job here. I believe the owner's name is Elaine. She is nice & pleasant. $10 for basic denim hemming (not re-attached original hem). When I request the hem seam thread to be less than 1/2 inch from the bottom, it's not. Oh well. The seam thread they use is somewhat thicker, so it actually looks like denim thread, and not like a shirt-sleeve thread. Although I have had to ask Elaine to re-do a pair to change the thread. She obliged and didn't charge me again. $25 to re-attach origin denim hem - Expensive, but pretty good job. I elect to re-attach origin hem only if the jeans have wear-n-tear already present, which you see mostly on 7 For All Mankind or Citizens for Humanity hems. The store is very clean & bright. There are 2 changing rooms to try on your items for pinning. Don't forget to bring the shoes you plan to wear with your alteration items. They only take cash or check, and are closed on Sundays. read more

I just assumed every place that advertises for alterations is similar. NOT! These ladies are the best. Brought a cheap dress online but it was short a half an inch or so for zipping up. I was bummed because I really liked the look of the dress and the I wanted to wear it to a wedding that was later in the week. I brought the dress in for them to take a look at to see what options I had. I went into the changing room, which is very spacious by the way, and then the tailor measured and said she could let some of the dress out so I could zip it up. It was a bit pricey ($40), but it was super short notice and I really wanted to wear the dress, so I agreed to it. She had it finished in 2 days because I needed it by Thursday for the Friday wedding. I went in a bit nervous, thinking it wouldn't zip still, but it was just right. It was able to zip up and I was able to wear it. I am really happy with the results even though it made my dress quite expensive overall. read more

***This review will be most helpful to those who are looking to get raw denim or normal denim alterations (more tapers than hems)!*** The story: I've been looking for a tailor who knows how to work with raw denim for quite some time. When I asked local tailors if they know how to work with raw denim, they tell me yes, they work with all denim. My fear was that they would not understand the culture around raw denim and might potentially mess up the selvage on the inside, or wash it in a way to ruin the indigo. I read a review on Perfit's yelp page that made me decide to take my raw denim here. The goal: What I wanted was to get my denim tapered from a 6.5 inch cuff opening to a smaller cuff opening to make my jeans fit better (tighter/more fitted) around my ankles. I'm used to wearing skinny jeans that stretch, so slim cuff openings were never a problem for me. But with this raw denim I have, there is absolutely no stretch. I paid a good amount of money for these so I wanted them to fit perfectly. The experience: When I took the denim to the shop, the lady working there tended to me right away. She told me to to try on the jeans, and we would start the pinning process. When she saw how the jeans looked on me, she immediately told me that we just need to hem the jeans shorter (which isn't what I wanted, I was only looking for a taper because I also like to cuff my raw denim). It took a bit of persuading to tell her that I only wanted the jeans to be tapered, not hemmed. By bringing a pair of my favorite stretch jeans to the store and showing her the cuff opening (which was 5.5 inches), she realized that I wanted my jeans slimmer. We worked out the alterations by me asking if she can change the cuff opening to 6 inches instead of 6.5. She then agreed and we walked over to the counter to write contact info. I then remembered that in order to keep the width of the selvage the same (and prevent it from looking wide and odd) I need to tell her to do the alterations from the inseam only. She told me it would be too hard to do it that way, but I showed her the selvage and told her I want to keep it that way. She then agreed and I was all set. I came back in exactly a week (bring your receipt), and the jeans were ready. When I tried it on, they fit exactly how I imagined. Not too tight to the point where I can't put it on. 6 inches was perfect, and they altered it by the inseam which is exactly what I wanted. The stitching looks very similar to the original and I am happy about that. The only problem I had with the pickup is that I think they might have dry-cleaned it or steamed it. Now you may be thinking "how is that a problem?" It was very kind of them to do that, plus it makes sense if they want to work on a flat garment instead of the denim being wrinkled. But with raw denim, they aren't supposed to be washed until worn many times to create fades etc.. So my jeans felt stiff again (keep in mind I wore them about 2-3 times a week for 6 months, so maybe a month and a half if I wore it every day). My creases were gone because of the dry-cleaning, but fades still remain. If you have a pair of raw denim you need to get altered, keep this in mind when coming to the shop. The review: All in all, I love the way it turned out. Taper is perfect, seams are in tact and so is the selvage. Just keep in mind they might dry-clean it to have a flat surface to work on. If this bothers you, let them know you don't want them washed... just make sure your jeans don't stink when you bring it in!! 5 stars because they did exactly what I asked. And I forgot to ask to not wash them haha. If you need a pair of jeans altered (raw denim or regular denim) THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO GO. Oh btw the price is $30 for taper and $12 for hem! I found this tailor on yelp and came to this store hoping to having 2 dresses altered. The first dress was done at a cost of 80.00! but was actually tailored to our satisfaction. The second dress was a disaster. The seamstress didn't alter the straps correctly nor shorten the dress lining after I paid 70.00 for the alterations. When I returned to have the dress corrected I was given an earful by the owner who couldn't admit that the alterations were poor and incomplete. She actually wanted me to be charged another 45.00 for her error. The dress was eventually fixed at no charge but it was ridiculous that I had to argue with her. Dropped 150.00 in total at this tailor for alterations and in return all I received was poor customer service. Never again will I return! read more

Took a bridesmaid gown in for a simple hemming because it was a bit too long. I was assured they would take off 1.5 inches which would have made the dress rest just barely above the floor with heels, and hang a bit onto the floor with flats. Instead, the dress came out at least 4 inches above the ground with heels, and at least 1 inch above the ground with flats - this is assuming I'm am standing with the dress pulled down as much as possible and making no movements. I was devastated, as my gown was ruined with no time to buy a new one. I was told there is nothing they can do. I left in tears and will never return. read more

Perfit is not the cheapest or fastest place to get tailoring done, but it's one of the best and only one around that I trust. I've done the whole $5-10 pant alterations before and, trust me, there is a difference. Some of those places don't even bother ironing the hem! Perfit will tell you how it is straight up, whether it's worth the trouble and your money or how the alteration will change the garment. Could not have asked for a better experience. I had to get two work pants altered (ordered from supremenewyork.com) and they arrived and were very baggy/loose compared to the usual fit i wear. And keep in mind these pants were 'two-toned'. It is 4/28... 5 days before their promise date. And man... The job they did was flawless. The cut was perfect. The two tones were cut evenly. Length on both pants were exactly like my favorite pair of pants. Even tried them on. And i must say i am more than satisfied with their work. Had recently lost a significant amount of weight and realized I could no longer fit a couple pair of expensive slacks. I came into Perfit, no appointment necessary and one of the ladies was very friendly and helpful. She asked me a few questions, pinned me up quickly and said my pants would be ready in a week. I came back and tried on both pairs, they fit wonderfully and she even left extra fabric just in case I needed to take them back out again (let's hope not!). Here's my story: I had a party to go to...I found a dress that I loved..Problem was , they only had the dress in 2 sizes larger than my size!!! I went to many other stores and noone had the dress in my size.. My sister reminded me about this Alterartions place she had seen...I was a sceptic...I needed the dress in one day and wasn't sure they could accomodate my needs..Also, I felt in order to make the dress fit me as I wanted, they would have to make the whole dress over...I was sure it was a lost cause..But, I tried... Elaine, the head seamstress extraordinaire, is the best and the only one I trust to alter anything from jeans to dress gowns. Her professionalism is unmatched and she's extremely friendly and easy to converse to about your clothing makeover. I'm very short at 4'11" but not skinny cuz I love to eat so I constantly can never buy clothes that fit my body but Elaine can always expertly tailor anything to just my size. She will honestly help you find what is the ideal length to shorten your pants or skirt to or just how much to take in a party dress or how to make anything look more flattering for your body type. I love how spacious and open her studio feels and it's always clean and organized with the fresh smell of new laundry and cut flowers. There are two spacious changing rooms each with a bench and mirror and wall mounts for hangers. Also don't forget to bring your special heels or shoes cuz it does make a difference. Elaine is meticulous and prompt and your fitting won't take longer than a couple minutes and in about a week, she will have made your clothes fit better than you could ever imagined! I was referred here by a friend several years ago. Original hem is $25, and Regular is $10. One time I took a tank top that had a broken clasp. I thought the reason I took it there was so they could replace the clasp. When I dropped it off I told her the issue, she said I think have another one I can sew on. When I came back I found out I had instead been charged $10 for her to sew on 3 stitches. So now my tank top has one strap with a clasp, and one with stitches =T At least they could have taken out the other clasp and replaced it with stitches so they both were symmetrical!!! Most recently I took a pair of pants that when I took them home one leg was A LOT longer than the other. I had to retake them back and they said it was my fault because it was the way I was holding them... but they'd adjust it more. Ummmm okay. Lastly I took a pair of shredded 7FAM jeans costing me $198. I went in late after work, was measured and left. When I came back I realized they didn't leave the original hem OMG!!! I can't stand regular hem on jeans where its really noticeable. I mean come on, they were ripped clearly did not look the same as when I had dropped them off! It's like the rules of fashion. You get original hem on items that it will change the affect of the jean. I told them why I was upset, and she said it was my fault because I had the ticket which clearly stated the price. So I should have known what I was getting into. I get this and trust me I am mad at myself for not noticing this cause now I'm not going to want to wear these. At the same time they should know what the client is looking for, and should make sure the client gets what they want. I even asked if they had the scraps, so I could have someone else sew the original hem back on. OMG I was desperate. They were absolutely not helpful they even charged me! I've taken loads of jeans and work pants to have them hemmed here. They are no longer getting my business! I'm going to my drycleaners that charges half the price!!! read more

However she immediately noticed that my blazer was about 4 inches too width and told me to jump in my car and exchange my blazer. A $92 job became $12.
