Perfit did a great job altering my selvedge jeans from Japan! They have one dressing room, and an area where they can make measurements on you. I came for an alter and an adjustment on the waist line. I can feel the denim gods rolling over on the fact that I made so many alterations. To my defense, I made an impulse buy in Tokyo and realized the jeans were way too big! My boyfriend has also gotten over 10 pairs of pants tapered and altered here. After moving here from the east bay, I looked for a new tailor so I wouldn't have to drive back and forth. Her prices were higher than the place I used to go to, but I figured it was worth it, especially since the items I wanted altered were on the higher end of pricing I usually pay. I got them back at the end of the week and they are FLAWLESS. The quality of work is so high that they look like no work was done to them at all, and now I realize my previous tailor wasn't as skilled. I wouldn't hesitate to return and support this business for anything I need altered. I got a wrap skirt shortened and a shirt's shoulder taken in for $80 total and honestly it's so worth it to have my clothes fit just right. It was my brother's wedding a few weeks ago and I had to wear a custom made traditional dress. It was such a beautiful dress that had handpainted flowers, a artistic design and on delicate silk fabric. The major bummer was that the measurements were wrong and it was extremely large (that 2 of me could fit in it)! So of course I was nervous to have any adjustments made. Did my yelp research and found Perfit Alterations. Whew....a nervewracking week later, I picked up my dress and it fit me to a tee. The skirt length, the bust size, the shoulders, the arm length....everything! The lady was really accomodating of my requests and easy to talk to as well. Needed some significant alterations to the shoulders of a bridesmaid dress--the work required much more than my rudimentary sewing skills. Brought it in; was told the dress would be ready on a Tuesday (about a week after I'd dropped it off); lo and behold, it was ready! Dress fit perfectly and looked beautiful. Nice stitching, no gapping... if you hadn't known it was altered, you couldn't tell (I mean that in the good way). Shop is clean and bright and (from what I could tell) run efficiently. Parking is not the best in that area, but you'll probably find something within walking distance. Definitely recommended. read more

I found this great little one of a kind couture baby doll top for a steal and even though it wasn't a perfect fit, I had to have it! I was already imagining the summer fun I could have in it. It had two layers of fabric and both had to be taken in. I definitely wanted it to hang loose and keep the A-line shape of it.The under side was a stretchy material and the second layer was a lacey fabric with some appliqued details. Neither of which is an easy material to work with. The first seamstress I took it to turned me away. I loved this top but it was just too big and with all the extra material, it just wasn't flattering and I was determined find a seamstress that could take on this challenge. It was THAT cute! My search on Yelp brought me here and I am so very glad it did. I brought it to Perfit on a Saturday and they said it would be ready the following Saturday. When I picked it up, I went into the dressing room to try it on and it still seemed pretty loose/too big. There was a crowd of people waiting to try things on and get measured so I asked if I could come back in a few days to discuss the fit, which they agreed. I brought it back a few days later, tried it on, and the owner Elaine agreed it wasn't quite right. Together we decided to take in just the layer underneath to remove some of the bulk. She also informed me that she would do this for no charge! Elaine is all about customer service and making sure they leave happy. She was so helpful and honest in her evaluation and provided suggestions on what I should and shouldn't wear with this top. Her shop is clean, well lit and always bustling with her well deserved repeat customers. She can add me to that list now! read more

Can't believe I'm the first reviewer! Perfit rocks. They used to be the go-to alterations place for the local Banana Republic and other stores; not sure if that's still the case. I've taken them everything from pants to be hemmed to full-length silk gowns to be taken in. (They lose a star because the lining on the silk gown never did quite hang right.) It's a little price-y, but I just buy my clothes cheap and bring them to Perfit for that custom-tailored fit, and I'm still $$ ahead. You can tell the jobs that they don't really want to do because those are more expensive. No real price list here - they just kind of make it up as they go, I think ... so BE NICE. They are professionals here. They ask that you bring in the shoes that you will wear with the item so that they can do the best job. And they do. read more

Their prices were not good. $12 per pant for a simple hem. $28 (!!!) to take in a dress with a basic seem (no princess cut) and the dress didn't turn out well. I'm frustrated. They fix my clothes, which is good, because I apparently have too wonderful of a time in them - break zippers, rip hems, lose whole pockets...That said, I am also not excited about the prices. It's usually some sort of emotional emergency that leads me to drop something off there as I'm a way bigger fan of Lina's Closet in downtown SM and she specializes in couture and dressmaking and plus, she's a super wonderful person. Anyway, what makes me mad is that my very cool double-buckle pants are being held hostage there because I rarely carry cash OR a check book. After so long in business you would think that terribly inconveniencing their customers might matter - but no, it does not. I like a place that is clean and neat and you don't feel like you're leaving your favorite new pants at some mom and pop place that's going to leave your crap laying around and do who knows what with. It's a large, new, clean place and they are very professional. There are usually 2 women there and they give great feedback and do a great job. It REALLY beats the strange place next door that is a dry cleaners and alterations place. I think it's called Louie's--what a mess! They also have 2 dressing rooms and a long mirror and yes, Banana Republic still sends their stuff there. If I don't buy my pants in the city and go to Golden Gate Alterations (I think that's the name but can't remember, I just know where it is when I am in front of it), I take my hem-ables here. I am 5 feet tall. Therefore, I have to get every pair of pants I ever buy hemmed. Every pair. No seriously, every pair of pants and almost every skirt or dress I buy has to be shortened by several inches. Of course this means that I do most of them myself, lest I spend hundreds of dollars a year on tailoring. Since I'm not a 6' supermodel, I searched Yelp for a reliable place to bring my jeans for hemming. Brought in my Rock & Republics after the rave reviews here. The store is bright and clean with clean spacious fitting rooms. Original hem cost me $25 with a one week turn around time. I think they might've removed a -little- more than I specified, but luckily I had tried on with my highest heels initially. More expensive than I'd like, but it seems they do a reliable job. Update as of 10/9/2008: I went to Perfit Alterations to alter a bridesmaid gown. She informs me that the work involved would be too much and that I may as well buy a new dress since she says no alterations will work to fix this dress. (Mind you, David's Bridal advised me to go a size up to get room for alterations.) Anyways, because I trusted her, I took what she said seriously. I was also really freaked, given the severity of the advice she provided. Yet, after researching this further by going to other seamstresses in the city, all of the ones I went to told me the seamstress at Perfit was wrong, and worse, even lazy! Honestly, I would have preferred the woman at Perfit to tell me she didn't want to do it or that she couldn't do it instead of saying what she said. Minus three stars. The remaining two stars is for the fact that you can still hem pants pretty well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It pains my mother that I would even pay $10 to hem my pants when I can easily drive up to San Francisco for cheaper prices. But considering the gas prices these days, I don't think it's that much of a bargain to go up to SF for alterations if you live in the Peninsula. The ladies here are wonderful. And the prices aren't even that bad. It's understandable that they can charge higher, given the area, the lack of competition, and the type of customers you see here.
