I've gotten 2 dresses altered here and both came back looking great! One dress was a unique shade of green and she was able to match the thread perfectly. The other was a bridesmaid dress that I had hemmed. It turned out the length it was supposed to, which I was happy about (it was a long dress and I was nervous it would end up too short). The woman isn't super friendly, but she isn't mean either...just down to business. Maybe I should have asked in advance, but I thought the hem for the long dress was a little pricey ($45, but there were 3 layers on the dress). On the other hand, the first time I went for the green dress, it was really cheap (I think it was only $8-ish). I don't quite understand how she charges, but next time I will know to ask in advance. "It's looks amazing on you"! says my date for valentines. I got my suit fixed up here with just a little over a week to go for Valentines and could not afford any mistakes. It fit perfectly! My love life is saved because of the owner. A week later, I decided to drop off two other slacks and a miniture backpack(I abuse my stuff like no other). Everything is fixed and again, perfect. I don't need to spend more than 3-5 minutes in there and the measurements are great. It's surprising how much customer service you can get within that short of a timeframe. Looks like I will be stopping by in another month or so if my marathon training keeps up like this. Thanks again! read more

I went based on the exceptional yelp reviews. However, when I went, she talked to me very curtly from the time I entered. I asked if she could hem my yoga pants, quickly measured them and said, "give them to me." I thought it would be acceptable to ask her if the new hem would be similar to the current hem - stretchy and reversible. She stop, stared at me, and asked me why I wanted to see that and said it would be different. I thought that different could be fine and so I asked if I could see what she meant by different. She didnt move and told me that "Maybe you should go somewhere else." I had been polite and patient and thought that asking to see what it would look like was a reasonable request. I didn't find this to be any kind of decent customer service. So I told her that I agree with her and I took it to Alice's Alterations in San Mateo. Alice was so friendly, and even completed my hemming by closing time that day at no extra cost! Alice was also much cheaper than Sonya and she did a spot on job! Also, Sonya said that she doesn't have the machine to do this kind of hemming, and luckily Alice did. I might have been fine with allowing Sonya to complete my order and returned to her had her customer service been even the slightest bit appropriate. read more

Her name is Sonya, and her hours are 9-6 Mon-Friday. Im not positive about the weekend hours. I will say this, as far as clothing is concerned, she has done some unbelievable alterations for me. To put it into perspective, I went from 190lbs to 155lbs, and I have this Hugo Boss suit that has the perfect fabric for hot summer days on the road. She brought it in to a very stylish european cut, and gave that great suit a second lease on life! She is wonderful, fast and astute in terms of the best possible solution to create exceptionally tailored pieces. She is the ONLY tailor I will ever use. read more

Great service here! I am totally blanking on her name right now but the woman that owns this shop is so sweet. She has the cutest Armenian accent. She can do anything and makes my clothes look amazing. I always have to get my jeans hemmed and she cuts off extra length and sews back on the bottoms so they look totally natural. She also did my prom dress back in high school and it fit me like a dream on the first shot. She is super efficient and flexible. She has reasonable prices as well! I went to drop off my 2 skirts and 1 dress for hemming at about 3:45p on a Thursday, and the place was closed. The sign said I was within the business hours, but it was closed. No sign in the window saying when she would be back, no reason given for being closed. I live nearby but work in the South Bay, so this was my one chance to drop things off. I tried calling the number, but of course it only rang inside the shop, where she wasn't present. She should have her phone forwarded to her cell, put up a sign, etc. if she's not going to be there during her posted business hours. I waited about 15 minutes and was just about to leave when she came. She said she was driving by and decided to check on the store. Whaaa?? You're supposed to BE there, not "driving by". But whatever. I dropped my items off and told her I needed them by Nov. 8, so the date she wrote was for Nov. 8, 15 days later. Unfortunately, I work in Cupertino and since I leave the SM area at 8:30a and don't return until about 7pm, I couldn't pick up my items during the week, and we were out of town the last 2 Saturdays and she's closed Sundays. By a fluke my husband worked from home today and was able to pick things up, but it would be really nice if there was at least one evening per week that she was open a little later so that people who work can pick up and drop off their stuff. Or open a little earlier in the morning one day a week, either way. The skirts were $28 each for hemming, and the dress was $35. It was higher than the other places around in SM that I'd polled, but she didn't give me the prices when I dropped things off, so I was a bit surprised at the $91 for 3 hems. They weren't complex. They were all straightforward and black. But I will chalk this one up to my not being diligent enough and requesting prices before I left. There was no list of prices posted; she had written them in after I'd left. I'd give1 star because of the inconvenience, the pricing, and general overall experience, but I added one because I'm hoping the hems will be good, based on other reviews. In the future, however, I will pick a place near my work instead, where the stores are staffed, prices are cheaper and the hours more conducive to me picking up my stuff. read more

Sona is wonderful! Her work is stellar but her advice is even better. She's great with hems, repairs, etc. But she has saved me hundreds of dollar with her advice. I bring her articles of clothing for her opinion....too long? fits wrong? can this be updated? salvaged? and so forth. Her sage fashion advice is always spot on and I walk out looking and feeling better than when I went in. She even tells me when something is just not worth spending the money on! Yesterday I brought in a dress that still has the tags on it. I love it but it has this weird, wrappy belt kinda thing that was unnecessary. But...what to do? Completely over charges for services. Did a terrible job repairing a broken heel of mine and tried to charge me more than the shoe was worth. She's rude to patrons and gives small local businesses a bad name. Yelling at customers outside your store to have quieter conversations as you are closing your shop is unbelievable. You aren't the only person who knows how to sew a button back on a jacket, calm down lady. RUDE!!!! That one star I gave is a lie. read more

Wow! I am pretty surprised by tracy b.'s review. I have known Sonya for 20 years as her loyal customer. She is the kindest, sweetest woman who consistently goes out of her way to make her customers happy. I am sure something was a terribly misunderstood here. Perhaps she was pressured by questions that were insulting to her craft. She has done couture dresses for the wealthy and famous who trust her immensely. Perhaps she was insulted by a comment that rubbed her the wrong way. Anyways, the quality of her work is outstanding and I would recommend Alterations To Go highly as a consistent and loyal customer of over 20 years. Sonna works her magic on anything and she has a creative knack that inspires ideas. She'll tell you how something can be modernized; she'll also tell you when it's not worth it. I've gone to her for years and whether it's the straight hem job, resizing dresses for my mother-in-law after she lost alot of weight, or remaking a cashmere Escada jacket that that is too good to toss but no longer fitting right.
