I've had several lovely experiences with On A Whim, and only just realized I'd never reviewed them…read more First of all, I've received some of my favorite gifts ever from here, including some lovely entertaining plates from their Kate Spade line, and more recently, Milkbarn baby gifts and my favorite Jellycat stuffed animals for baby June, from Uncle Ferris. But I've also enjoyed shopping here as a customer, but almost exclusively for gifts - wedding, hostess, and special birthday gifts. From a wonderful selection of beautiful dishes and linens, to all manner of candles and home decor, this is my go-to stop when I know I need to take a gift but I have no idea what to take! I know that sounds nebulous, but it's true! Bookmark this as a go-to gift store. When in doubt, On A Whim. I've never really shopped their clothing, but perhaps that is because I always come here when I'm looking for something special for other people! As we approached with our 5-year-old grandson, we noticed a sign on the door stating the shop is "not appropriate for young children." I can respect that--it's their business and their policy. However, before we even had a chance to decide what to do, the woman behind the counter was glaring at us through the window as if daring us to walk in with him. It was incredibly unwelcoming and unnecessarily rude. Our grandson is well behaved, and I easily could have had someone take him for ice cream across the street while I shopped. In fact, I had every intention of spending money here. But after being treated that way before we even stepped through the door, I chose not to. A business is certainly entitled to have rules about children. Customers are also entitled to decide where they spend their money--and courtesy goes a long way.

The new store boasts an outdoor area which is also decorated well. I think this store has more furniture and bedding than the one in Utica Square. I was there during the end of the holiday season and again, while it was decorated well, it wasn't over the top cluttered. Staff might have been more helpful but it was a busy time of gift selling!

Nest, Baobab, Molton Brown, Inis, Wolf, Louis Sherry, Michel Design Works, Logevy, Jack Black....and on and on. I loved that the store wasn't a collision of strong smells, but more of a delightful whiff as you passed by each display. The staff was friendly, helpful, and always busy designing and redesigning displays, so you would never enter the same store twice. How refreshing and fun! I think my favorite item was the cute and clever camera clock. However, the race for my second favorite has many contenders! Something to make me smell/feel good? Something to make my home lovely? Sur La Table is an upscale kitchen store that offers cooking classes…read more We signed up for last Thursdays cooking class featuring beef wellington, mashed potatoes, and broccolinni. We had a load of fun. The chef was great, the dinner delectable, and the couple we were paired with delightful. All of the hard work, the prep, was ready for us when we started, and of course we had no clean-up The mushroom duxelles is a French mushroom mixture made by finely chopping mushrooms, shallots, and herbs, then sautéing them in butter until the moisture has evaporated and the mixture forms a paste. The paste is then spread on the puff pastry that is then wrapped around the beef. Each cooking table (station) was occupied with two couples assigned per station. This arrangement is perfect for friends that want to enjoy the experience together. On the down side there is no seating, so be prepared to stand for two hours while you are cooking and enjoying the fruits of your labor, eating at the cooking station where you prepared the meal. The experience was fun and enjoyable, and even Jan who is an excellent cook, left with a few new tips. They allow you to bring one bottle of wine per couple. The cost was $100 per person.

We're so consumed by our phones that it's nice to put your phone down and just enjoy each other's company.
