Ok so I was so excited to go here. There is something really comforting about a tamale done right!…read moreThe glowing reviews and pictures seemed promising. The restaurant itself has a lot of character, it full of textures and colors, had a cute little fountain outside. It just feels homey and welcoming. The menu...is hella pricey for a tamale. I mean even with inflation these days I could get a tamale at most spots where I live for like half the price. I just told myself it's Sedona just except it lol so I went wild and got their extra special tamale with lots of topping to make it a more complete meal. I chose the chicken mole for my filling. I also got their dairy free horchata. First thing the horchata was delicious! Creamy, great texture, not to sweet, seasoned just right. Extra points for being dairy free as milk is not my bodies friend. The tamale however was a major let down. I was so close to just sending it back, but was on a time crunch and starving. The masa was so salty. The mole sauce was barely existent and had no complexity or flavor really. I didn't taste the chocolate or the Chile . Just blah. The toppings and horchata helped make it possible to consume despite the saltiness. So overpriced salty tamale gets 2 stars, ambiance 5, and horchata 5, which is why this place gets a three stars overall. I wanted to love this spot so bad, and maybe it was a bad day, or the wrong thing to get...but their name is literally tamaliza. Their tamale should have rocked my world.

Service was amazing too - attentive, friendly & joyous. Menu is innovative and while we didn't vibe with the taste of every item we tried, we enjoyed how healthy and gut friendly the food was. They say all their food is prepared in-house and is never from a can. Their dessert selection is amazing (tried the freshly baked vegan, GF scone which was soooo yum). The chocolates were good too but a tad overpriced imho. And omg, the seating in this restaurant is something else... there's PLENTY of inside and outdoor seating, incl their magical garden area.

Not only was the atmosphere great but the service and food were amazing too. The homemade bread is a must, my favorite thing honestly and with the oil & vinegar made for a perfect starter. I get that it's an incredibly busy and touristy spot, so I'll give them credit for that. We got there about 15 mis after it opened on a Thursday morning, was given an attitude for not having a reservation, was told that it would be a 40 mins wait, given a pager, and that if we didn't make it back to the restaurant within 5 mins of our table being ready we would lose our spot. That's fine. I get it. The problem is...the food was not great. It wasn't terrible, but it was not delicious. The gluten-free pizza crust was soggy and tasteless, the cheese was undercooked. My son's shrimp dish was spiced strangely and he couldn't finish it.The kids meals were drenched in butter. No one finished their meals. Everything was overpriced. Again, I understand this often the case for touristy places like this...you are there for the ambiance, not the food. But, I imagined there are other restaurants in the area that have better food and service and similar views.

The elote appetizer was bursting with a charred corn flavor and coated in a creamy, tangy sauce with just the right amoun of spice. The goat cheese balls were crispy on the outside and warm ant flavorful in the inside, and the freshness of the veggies with each bite was absolutely balancing. For the mains, I had the smoked pork cheek, which was unbelievably tender and savory. My hubby's shrimp and pork belly dish was cooked nicely. It was juicy and well cooked shrimp with tender pork belly that combined nice with the sauce. Both dishes were easily 9/10 or higher. The salsa deserves a shoutout too. It was fresh and chunky, with a nice balance of heat and flavor. We finished with the Mexican chocolate pie, and that was rich and decadent, and not overly sweet. Absolutely to die for. MUST TRY!

(Please look at my photo of the sad leftovers). We had written down all of the suggestions of things to do in Sedona and Elote Cafe was at the top of our list of things to do. Apparently getting a reservation at this place is super difficult to get, so we decided to order takeout. Elote dip, pork cheeks, green tamale, carne asada, pork belly tacos and corn cake for dessert. The elote dip was enjoyable especially when eaten with chips, the green tamale was better off used as a trampoline at a kids party (it was spongy, flavorless and possibly good to scrub your dishes), the carne asada was dead like the cow it came from and flavorless, the pork belly tacos were barely edible because of the overwhelming sour taste of lemon, and last but least was the corn cake, it was dry and about as exciting as a retirement home party. We wasted our money thinking that a place with a waiting list to get on would be an experience just like everything else we experienced in Sedona but instead Elote Cafe is a bad tourist trap that has as much charm and taste as Del Taco. Save your money and look elsewhere for some great Mexican inspired food even if it means you need to travel to Tucson.
