I am extremely concerned about the service my daughter received at the Pep Boys location at 2525 US-22 W, Union, NJ. She brought her 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan in shortly after 12 PM due to a check engine light. She was told the water pump and thermostat/gasket needed to be replaced, and we agreed to the repair. After waiting about five hours, we were then informed that the entire thermostat needed to be replaced, the cost would increase, and the car would need to be kept overnight, with a promised completion time of noon the next day. The next day, the car was not ready as promised, and after additional waiting, the mechanic stated that although the car had been put back together, it was still leaking from the same area they repaired. This raises serious concerns about the accuracy of the diagnosis, quality of workmanship, and overall safety of the vehicle. Since my daughter drives this car, this is especially alarming. We are now seeking a second professional opinion. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this location and possibly formal complaint with BBB. read more

This is the 2nd time ive been the 1st time 4 hours later I had a starter put in ,after waiting the 1st starter was wrong they had to get another, Now I'm back starter no good trying it again 3 hours in, waiting on a starter to be delivered maybe they should find another source, this is B S not my fault , not the counter ppl fault, but how much patience do I have to have , I paid for the Job to get Done..What r my options, please comment I wish I could scream and sue..I'm still waiting for a starter to be delivered then they got to put it all back together maybe I'll be out by 4 before rush hour but it highly debatable.. read more

Poor in follow thru, customer service, and math Feb 21,2026, I visited this PB location for a free oil change--free because the last time I was here, I paid for an oil change but they FORGOT to actually DO the service. But during this visit, they quickly handled the oil change, they shared no feedback and I headed out. HOWEVER, when I drove just four miles away to the store, imagine my surprise when my car would not restart--all within 30mins of leaving PB. I called PB and they stated that they FORGOT to tell me that my starter had an issue. I asked them what my options were and they recommended towing my car back to the store. I asked if they would pay for the tow, I was told NO. After disputing their decision, with three different employees--including the manager--reminding them that this should be a courtesy considering that I had JUST left, and the manager finally relented. (Keep in mind that not too long ago, Pep Boys covered the cost of tows to their locations). He quoted me $509 for the starter, would not offer any discount. I then waited 3hrs for the tow, got the car back to the store and learned that this would be a 4hr job and wouldn't be done until the next day. In the past this location provided courtesy Ubers for services over a certain amount but, of course, they no longer provided any uber services. I then ordered my $50 uber and asked the PB staff to please pull my car in overnight because of the impending blizzard. The next day, I called pep boys to check in on my car, but they hadn't even pulled it inside to start working on it--despite being open for almost two hours. When called me back, they quoted me at $550 and told me that I received a 10% discount. I questioned them how that was possible since I was quoted $40 less by the manager on the previous day with no discount. They would not honor their previously quoted price and informed me that they "were taking a $50 hit on this job." (Keep in mind, I've incurred over $100 in ubers to get back and forth). This location's math doesn't add up; their customer service is insulting; and their poor follow thru is very costly in both time and money. Took my suv for a check engine light to fix.They quoted me $700.00 to repair i agreed.Pickup in the afternoon thinking well it's fix. 2days later check engine light back on.Called they said bring back .Again pickup thinking well it's fix. Again a few days later check engine light on again.Well I took back a total of 4 times to no avail check engine light continues to come on. I ask for a refund they gave me the run around for 4 month. I went in to have a tire replaced, all I wanted was one tire replaced, they tried to charge me over $200, come to find out they put me in for 2 tires, gave me some story that it would affect the transmission which I knew was a line of BS. I visited this location because I had a few meetings setup in the area. I had my colleague pick me up after dropping off my car that was getting two new tires. I unfortunately had a blowout the day before. I'm explaining all of this because in my mind I expected it to take a full day to get to my car and change the tires so I planned to not have a car. This has also been my experience with other Pep Boys locations. Well, this wasn't the case in Union. I dropped off at my 10am appointment and they finished replacing the tires within an hour! My Car send in PEP Boys for repair of 2 Knock sensor last July2024. Now my car got an engine light again and it's the Knock sensor was the fault again. My Car service center told me the parts used was aftermarket and the wiring is not as standard. Plus PEP Boys bill me more than enough they charged me $1200, while my Car brand service center only charged me $500. Plus they took them 1 week to fix my car just to put an Aftermarket parts for the price more than the Genuine parts. Learn my lesson never go to this shop again. STAY AWAY! I brought a 2018 Chevrolet Cruize that failed inspection with and Check Engine Light and ONE code P1101 which is a bad MAF sensor.After being charged $498 to replace the sensor the check engine light went back on as soon as I got home. fast forward I brought the vehicle back 4 times and each time they reset the code to remove the check Engine light. the first 3 times the Service Manger Jose agrees it was still the same issue and and tried to correct the issue. The 4th time I returned I was told Jose was no longer there but of course they would look again to correct the problem. after waiting 3 hours the new Service Manger JC tells me they need to replace the Throtle Body Assembly, Remove and replace the Air temperature Sensor and a System Relearn. the cost of this $1100!!!!! of course I didnt let them do anything and the next day went to local mechanic in Maplewood. the problem was corrected by just cleaning the Throttle body assembly And charged me $105!!! i took the vehicle to the Newark inspection station where it passed with no issues. This store overcharges and price gauges their customers. this will not be the only recourse to write a negative review. I plan to report them to the Better Business Bureau and make as many complaints as possible until someone from PepBoys contacts me. JC the service manager is a crook and should not hold a managemen position. PepBoys may have great deals for tires but stay away from the incompetent overcharging mechanical services. go you your local mechanics! read more

Got $1200 worth of repairs on my car, one of them being exchanging the coolant fluid. A few days later, my Odometer stopped working. I went to another car repair shop, who told me that this pep boys location broke something in my car and that's why the odometer stopped working. I paid $120 to fix what pep boys broke. A month later, I got an oil change on my car, and the mechanic told me I had almost no coolant fluid left, and they replaced it for me, after I just paid $100 to have my coolant fluid replaced by PEP BOYS. Pep boys took my money and screwed up my car even more. They are not to be trusted. Stay far away from this location. read more

So I thought I'd be able to leave an excellent review here before while it was upsold to me, they did knock off some % on the alignment and oil change. However that is not that case. I arrived early for my appointment of 4:30pm, only to be standing here (currently 5:57pm) with my car having not moved from where I parked it. It was finally taken in at 6pm. I understand being busy but an hour and a half later and my car still not being even looked at is ridiculous to me. Slimy location. Spoke to a mechanic on the phone about getting 4 new tires. Was quoted one price (approx $570 plus tax with a special they were running), confirmed it by calling the next day before we took the car in. Upon arrival, somehow the same 4 tires jumped to almost $1,000. The mechanic we spoke with there said the guy we talked to on the phone was on a lunch break and couldn't come verify the price he told us on the phone. When we asked for a breakdown and explanation of why the cost almost doubled, he threw out a couple random numbers and services that didn't add up at all. Just turned around and went home. Pulled up another pep boys location online, scheduled an appointment for the same tires and service and it came out to $613 - which is what we were expecting. read more

Booked an oil change through Car Advise. Called Pep Boys to make an appointment. Guy said, "there's almost no wait" and "come on in." When I arrived 20 minutes later, suddenly there's a 2 hour wait before they can even look at my car. Figure 30 minutes - 45 tops - to change the oil (and that's being generous). Five hours later, I'm still sitting in the waiting room. Car was up on the lift for more than an hour. Couldn't get anyone to give me an ETA. It was always "give us 30 more minutes." Made a web purchase for a battery and installation, you make the appointment online. I made the appointment for 8pm, I get there 7:45 and walk to the service desk. The tech at the desk asked me if I made the appointment today, I told him at 9am this morning and picked 8pm open appointment timeslot. He continues with you have to make the appointment 2 days in advance, it's like going to a doctor and you need you give 2 or 3 days notice. I ask why the system doesn't inform the buyer , he states it doesn't matter, we don't do same day appointments in the store. We are too busy.. Totally feel like my son was cheated and scammed. Falsified problems. Came for a front end alignment but they wouldn't do it because they claimed other repairs were necessary first to the tune of $4000! (The car was running fine.) Over priced necessary repairs. Charged $160 to diagnose non-existent/existing problems. Never heard of a shop that charges for giving an estimate. Recommend avoiding this company. In fact, we told them we were picking up the car at the end of the day. When we got there, it was still on the lift with engine cover off. They wouldn't take it down until we insisted and also paid the diagnostic fee. The mechanics in the shop didn't even come over to point out any of the issues that they claimed were in need of repair, like we were invisible. Terrible. read more

Came here twice for noise from car. Both times they stated they couldn't hear the noise. We walked to the back, they were blasting music hanging out and there was other noises. Of course you can't hear ! We parked car outside, they heard the noise. Then said, go to the dealer. We don't know what the problem is. They never checked !!! These guys have our cars for 5 days - the AC was not working - they said that they needed to replace the sensor - after 4 days we called they said that the package was late - the next day the car should be ready - the day the car should be ready we called - they said by 3 pm the car will be ready - then they called to say that they had received the wrong part and it is common that they receive the wrong parts - we asked for the car they said that we still have to pay them for diagnostic fee even though it is their fault that they could not completed the work - we were travelling from Massachusetts. I have been a customer of the Route 22, Union location for several years and will no longer go back. I originally went to get two of my tires replaced, which we were talked into getting all four new tires in January. When driving on the highway at the beginning of April, my back passenger side tire blew. There was nothing stuck in the tire, the pop occurred inside the tire and there was a pink liquid that was all over us, the tire, and the ground when we went to change the tire. I now know from two other mechanics who looked at the tire that this was fix-a-flat in a "brand new" tire. When I went to the shop to inquire about it, I was told repeated this "didn't concern" them and it "didn't pertain" to them. To fix the problem, they said we would have to buy another new tire. Be aware when purchasing from them, I never will again. They seem to care very little about the safety of their customers. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. They workmanship is at its lowest. They will not hold themselves accountable for anything. They lie about everything. I was told my breaks need to be replaced. They replaced them and they have squeaked ever since. They said it was dust, claimed they cleaned it off, and the breaks still squeak. I then found out that they screwed up a simple oil change that is costing me hundreds of dollars to fix. Their response was, "bring it in so we can see if it's something we did." I swore I would never step foot in here again but I was desperate for tires as i had a slow leak in 2 of them. On NYE 2021 i got 4 brand new tires, my car is 20 years old. I am also on a very tight budget, granted the tires i bought were on the low end they should not be deflating. They put them on made me aware of a broken rear coil and I was on my way. (I was not going to let them touch my car beyond tires as they damaged my door locks replacing a battery a while back - and they still do not work correctly) 2-3 weeks later all 4 are deflating. Being very cold I figured it was because of the temperature. I filled them with air but it continued and got worse. I am sitting here now being told the valve and seal are no good and I am being charged to have something that should never been an issue HAD THEY DONE THEIR JOB CORRECTLY IN THE FIRST PLACE. I have no choice but to pay as I can't ride on deflating tires. The guy behind the counter was quite condescending while trying to justify the cost. I am not an idiot and I don't appreciate being spoken to like one. This place is a joke and had I been able to drive on the original tires I would have NEVER come in here and I would have waited until my next day off to go elsewhere. Go to STS across rt 22 in Union nj, they fixed my broken coil, spoke to me like professionals and went above and beyond in service. EDIT: 4/9/22 I was offered a synthetic oil change "to make things right" there is a reason this place has 2 stars and that is being generous. Think long and hard before stepping in here. read more

My recent experience was nothing like my experience two years ago. Whereas, the service and accuracy of work was exceptional. I had a single tire repair, the sales rep suggested an all wheel balance as well. I went along against my better judgement, and wasted my money; nearly one hundred dollars. My car is now wobbling over 60 MPH. I truly believe this recent experience violated my trust with Pep Boys. I would not recommend any Pep Boys location for the following reasons: Violation of trust, did not complete the work as stated, pretty much stole money from me. read more
