Easy to get a same day appointment. Staff was very helpful and let me know there was a coupon available for my oil change. One of the front desk staff came back stating that the technicians were recommending some additional work related to the air filter and spark plugs. I agreed to have the air filter changed. Unfortunately, there are very thin walls between the waiting area and the service area. So when she went back to tell them to add the air filters, I could audibly hear the techs yell, "yay....more money". It leaves your customer wondering did they truly need the air filter or was this just a scheme to see how much more money you can get each customer to spend. Overall everything was great, but that comment was concerning to overhear. read more

The cashier at the store on rt 9 in Howell took my oil but told me he wouldn't take any more unless it was in a disposable container because "I can't stop my workers to dump your oil". I have been using Pep Boys for some time for oil changes, tire purchases, etc. Generally, I have had a good experience. However, I recently went for an oil change and tire rotation. When I got my car the total was $85 after the $20 coupon they always have. This was about $16 more than I normally pay, but I assumed it was due to inflation and I was in a rush so I didn't question the increase. When I went home and had a chance to look at my receipt I noticed that in addition to the oil change and tire rotation, they did a fuel additive service which is why the cost was $16 more than normal. My issue is I did not ask for this service, nor was it ever mentioned or offered to me. This wasn't a mistake and they clearly just added the service without my knowledge or authorization. Very disappointed as I have never had this type of issue with them but now not sure if I will go back. read more

I would think performing a basic oil change and tire rotation on a late-model Volkswagen is just about the simplest thing Pep Boys does. Maybe I give them too much credit. I went in a on a Saturday for these cost-of-entry services and on Sunday I had three quarts of Pennzoil pooled on my driveway and a car that vibrated at 60mph and pulled severely to the left. Returning to the scene, I was met by service Adviser Nancy who upon realizing that she came within an hour of owing me a new engine was very diligent about replacing the incorrectly installed drain plug and re-changing my oil but felt the need to regale me with tales of old, pitted and unbalanced tires (new as of last month and of 2016 origin, same for alignment and balancing) being responsible for my suspension gremlins - all but suggesting that I needed four new tires. Given that the vehicle had run perfectly the day before I was not about to be subjected to a fear sell especially given Pep Boys well-earned reputation for "suggesting" incremental repairs and services. Yes, Pep Boys is convenient and they make high value coupons readily available but as for me, saving a few bucks with the three amigos is simply way too expensive. Never again at Pep Boys. read more

When I got home I jacked the car up and took the tires off with no problem at all. They are super lazy and uneducated workers at this location. I change my own oil and do my own rotations now! My daughter brought our car in to diagnose a check engine light. The repair quote felt high, so I had her pick up the car and take it to my local VW dealership for a second opinion. She drove onto the highway where the business is located and the car almost immediately shut down, putting her in a very dangerous situation. I had to have the car towed to a dealership and the technician there found that a shop rag had been stuffed into the air box intake in the engine and was sucked into the throttle body, causing the engine to seize. I was advised that the rag would have caused pretty immediate engine issues and Pep Boys was the only place to have been under the hood of my car in recent months. Whether through negligence or outright malicious intent, the tech at Pep Boys who looked at my car put my daughter and other drivers at serious risk, not to mention the additional repair cost I incurred to have the rag and fibers cleaned out of the engine. read more

Roughly one month ago, I started hearing this awful noise whenever I turned my steering wheel and also while parking. Took a ride to my second favorite parts store...closed. Insert profanity laden phrase here. Next closest store...Pep Boys. They had what I needed at the same price as the other store. And their prices were in line with the other store. And after rebates they were actually better. I hate rebates though. I have a love hate relationship with Pep Boys. I love them when they have what I need and I hate them when for some reason they don't. It really seems to be a fifty fifty shot you have to at this location. I went in to get something for my Chevy and of course they had it. I went in to get something for my Jeep thinking it's a Jeep I see tons of Jeeps on the road. Well yeah there are tons of Jeeps on the road which I why they were all out of stock on what I needed. This location being on Route 9 I do understand they are in a prime location to go through stock pretty quickly but it does stink when they don't have what you need. About the store though I've never had any problems with employees. If you are comfortable working on your car you have probably been to one of these before and you know what they are all about. This location is not bad and is usually fairly clean and organized as well. Just keep in mind it's location hurts you as far as whether or not they may have stock in that part you are looking for. read more

Jason the front desk manager went out of his way to find me the parts I needed and even called me back when he found my parts at a much cheaper price than he originally quoted. A few weeks later he called me when pep boys had a really great tire sale only because I refused to replace the first time because I just didn't want to spend the $$$! But the sale was too good to pass up so he got my car right in and the mechanics there once again did a fast fantastic job, they are very knowledgeable and always do a fast, clean job and always double check your car for any other problems they see now or problems that may occur in the future. Totally unprofessional and they lie. My headlight bulb blew with the cold weather. Asked if we bought the bulb before purchasing if they could put it in. We were told they could. So we bought the twenty dollar bulbs only to be told it would be a two hour wait just for them to put bulbs in if not longer because they were so "busy." Wind up having to then drive an hour home in a snow storm with no working headlights. Lied to make a sale, last time I'll be using pep boys.
