Had to come here on a Sunday, I caught a flat and nothing else was really open. It was pretty close to closing and I was worrying about how to get to work the next day. I was immediately acknowledged by the young boy at the counter who rushed over to help me. He was pretty knowledgeable about how to quote me, and I was taken care of right away by Manzo. Manzo went above and beyond to help me, they really made me feel like they cared. So happy I came here! read more

Very rarely do I post a review anywhere but I was blown away by the customer service experience I received from an employee named Diana. She greeted me when I walked in, noticed I looked lost looking for something(paint for my car) offered assistance and even got me the product in a timely manner. She knew her brands and recommended some, not just based on the price but also on what most customers buy and ratings based on the brand name. I would recommend anyone to go there especially if she's around as she made exceeded my expectations. I've gone to other pep boys location, but I was more satisfied with this location thanks to Diana read more

Had an appointment for a basic diagnostic test that takes 10 minutes at most. The first employee I spoke to said that I'd need a comprehensive check starting at $200, without looking at or asking any questions about the car. I reminded him that their website offers to do a free basic check first and that will tell us if more involved diagnostics are needed (which according to the website start at $40, not $200). They then told me to drop my car at one of the service bays. The mechanic there said it will take a couple of hours as he's very busy with other cars. This for a 10 minute job, and having an appointment. Don't waste your time. read more

Do not go here! We had them put brand new tires on brand new rims that we had already bought elsewhere. We had all the materials needed for them. They were not even putting the tires and rims on the car. Just wanted them to put the tires on the rims and we were picking the completed tires back up when finished and installing them on our car ourselves. We paid a lot for these rims and tires when we had bought them. We got back home and we saw they put big nicks on 2 of the rims. They were brand new from a box when we brought them there. The staff are incompetent young guys who have poor work ethics. We ended up going back and asked to speak to a manager who was arrogant himself. He compensated us a little bit but definitely not what my rims were worth. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

I was about lose hope in Pepboys after horrible experiences at Rt. 17 south location. They did a lousy brake job over there went back 3 times with the same problem couldn't fix it. I came here and they fixed my car set the right brake pads. I would like to mention Marco who was doing an excellent job! read more

Do not go here unless you know about cars, because if the mechanics see you do not know about your car's situation they will take advantage. Make sure you question what they are charging you, because they charged me $10 each to install two $5 break lights. There was also a very long wait and I felt very uncomfortable. I feel very taken advantage of. read more

Like any other auto shop they want to sell you what you don't need. I went to change my brake pads and off course they recommended that I needed new rotors which I knew I didn't. Also watch out for a shop fee on your bill which is not included in their prices or advertised anywhere. read more

Here for just a conventional oil change. Made an appointment. Car was in fast and done quickly. They noticed I needed two tires, which I inspected and agreed upon. Total visit was only about an hour and a half for both services. $193. Guys working were friendly and helpful, nice waiting area. read more

Dropped in my camry for tires change. The guy at the counter and manger told me 1 and half hour to 2 hours I will take to do the job. My back glass was broken already so they did not drive in to change the tires, never called me. I came back after 2 hours and they told me that they need my permission to move the car. They are liars. They moved it already once I left the store earlier because I did not see my car then where I parked. I asked for the manger twice. After 1 and half hour has already passed. I still did not see him. NEVER COME TO THIS PLACE AGAIN!!! read more

3/23/2015 This was deleted it seems ..I couldn't find it anywhere, but here it is: Again ok first all I had a nail in the tire, but in the treading...simple and no problem. I went alone, little ole me, female and w no MALE in sight..I was told I needed a brand new tire and I could not get out of there unless I purchase one! They stated that the nail was in the tread but in sideways, now I'm thinking why didn't the tire pop or was damaged even more instantly, I mean I was riding around in a slow leaked tire for 2 months. They were adamant they couldn't fix it. I went to a mechanic and they did it in 2 seconds and haven't had a problem since! I told them about what Pep Boys told me and they were willing to go down there and maybe show them how to plug a tire. I had told a few mechanics in case I was in the wrong and sure enough 3 more stated they would go there and see what's up w the pep boys mechanic for not seeing that it was fixable. bottom line, no more chain ...just go to your local mechanic. they want your business and will be more honest. A chain place will always want to sell you something, it's the retail business. read more

SERIOUSLY, AVOID THIS PLACE. I had alignment done here, In barely in a year the driver side front tires are striped, i went back and they told me then fix it no cost to me for tomorrow morning. After i showed up they tell me that it will cost me 90 dollars to get it aligned again. When i did get the alignment last year i went back within 5 minutes telling them that the car wasn't aligned but they checked and said it was as i drove home my car was still shifting slightly to the one side. So basically stay away from here. You could easily find a better place then this place. read more

Wish I read the reviews on this place...called to see if I could drive over and get an oil change right away. Manager said sure, we can take you right away. Got there, they told me an hour. Idiots. Hour went by, i went to the desk and asked how much longer. I'm now waiting another hour lol. Doesn't matter if they speed up the process and I get my car back in one piece, because I'm not going to give them stars back and I can't go lower! Oh yeah they're crappy at customer service too. I don't ever do reviews. But I had to for this customer service. The auto repair industry is notorious for its customer service and I'm always treated like I'm bothering the staff when I ask for any service. But Mark, the manager, was absolutely phenomenal from the moment I spoke to him on the phone to him dealing with me directly in person when installing a trailer hitch on my GTi. Many many thanks to the staff here, and thanks mark for the welcoming customer service. Gonna do all my auto repairs here. read more

If it's possible to give a negative number that would be what they get. This is the worst place to go to for any kind of care repair. They'll ruin your car like they did to mine because they don't know anything about cars. 2 visits and 5 hours each and nothing was fixed with my car because they have no clue. They installed new parts and it wasn't working because again they have no idea. I went to the dealer mechanic and it ended up being a blown fuse!!!!!! But because they installed a part they didn't have to I had to get that fixed too because they didnt install it properly. Simple fix cost me $450.00 at Pep Boys + $300 for their F up + 10 hours of my life I'll never get back. I fought the charge with them. I should received a full refund but they're idiots and only received part of it back. NO ONE SHOULD EVER GO THERE. they should just shut their doors and close up for good. They're dishonest and complete morons. read more

I went to my local PepBoys Auto Shop in Hackensack yesterday JUST to change a headlight BULB. They first gave me a quote for $42 (rounding up), and told me the work order quote doesn't include a possible "moving charge." So they checked my car and because they'd to move the battery to get to the driver side headlight they wanted to charge me an extra $30. Now to repair anything on a car you usually WOULD have to MOVE something to get to the problem. Why wouldn't PepBoys include this the labor charge? It's ridiculous to charge $71 to change a bulb on a car. PepBoys do better than this? read more

I have a great mechanic shop in my hometown in PA. BUT our AC compressor froze and our serpentine belt fell off of my 2005 scion while we were on the NJ turnpike, on a Saturday afternoon, driving up from Philly to see family. Of course, we didn't know the compressor was the problem. We just knew our belt was gone and the car was overheating and all of the warning lights came on in the dashboard. Not only did Pep Boys take us immediately, they got the compressor in the next day, a Sunday (most places in Bergen Co. are closed on Sundays) and had us out of the door and heading back to Philly by Sunday evening. Yes, the mechanic had a thick accent but I swear these guys are family now and going on the Christmas card list. They saved the weekend. They went above and beyond to get us safely back on the road so we didn't have to miss the first day of school Monday. They got us up and running when no other mechanic was available. I could care less about the lame waiting room because they did their jobs and fixed my baby. read more

Upside is that they're open on Sunday and they have later hours than almost anywhere else. And they did an overheating diagnostic for ($34) which was way less than any other place I called (a local guy I was referred to was closed that day). Downside is that they they constantly try and up-sell you and one has to negotiate and negotiate and then they are still way more money than they should be. I've been to them in the past when I've been in NJ and it's always like that. Try to sell you stuff you don't need when all you want to do is get your car on the road as quickly as possible. Case in point, my old Oldsmobile was running hot. Hadn't had a problem all summer and I'd replaced the radiator 8 months ago. So after forgetting to bring the car in to the shop and put it on a lift for over an hour (!) while I sat in the waiting room- they finally take a look and the service guy told me he had "bad news". There was a hose that was leaking and that's why it kept loosing water/coolant and running hot. Also, I need to replace the water pump and thermostat. And of course do a radiator flush. $528. + labor = $826!!!!! What? Thermostat seemed to work cause it told me the car was running hot. No, but he told me I should have gotten a new one when I got a new radiator. (I called the place that did that and they said no; they only would have replaced it if it was broken). I told him that and he then said that i "should" get a new thermostat because it wasn't replaced and it was old. Water pump broken? No, but the whole cooling system should be replaced to guarantee it would work. Oh yeah and do a coolant flush - which was the only thing that made sense to do since the car was leaking water and coolant. So I finally said (after trying to wade through all that nonsense) - OK, wth does it cost to just do replace the leaking hose and do the flush? Answer was "about" $300 + tax if the labor didn't take too long. Guess what? Time for a second opinion. So I waited a day and and the very nice local guy (Dr. Eds Auto Clinic in Ridgefield Park) - called me back the next morning and said I could bring the car by. He had to order the hose, but two hours later the car was done, new hose attached, radiator flushed, fluids and general check up done - $120 - all in including tax. I don't know if Pep Boys pulls this BS on men too, but seriously - women know what's up with price gauging and they usually have a pretty basic knowledge of their cars as well. read more

No stars. I agree 200% with Irena. As a woman with a car in need of service, who only spoke English. I was lied to and the price got jacked up mid service. Will NEVER recommend the Hackensack store to anyone and will make it my business to tell others all about this horrible shop read more

Very slow and disorganized staff. I came in here on a weekday morning for new tires and that process took nearly two hours. As I didn't have an appointment, I kinda let that slide since there were other customers ahead of me. As I finished up, however, I made an appointment for the next day at 11 AM to bring another car in for an oil change. Okay, at least I'd have an appointment, I'll be in and out, right? I show up the next day about 10 minutes to 11 and after they finally found my appointment after some issues, handed over my keys. As the noon hour approached, I checked the bays to check on the progress... my car was still sitting in the parking lot. Oh, no. No no no. Got my keys back and got the heck out of Dodge. Never again. read more

Good service when I went to fix my car... definitely recommend if you have some problems with your car!!

Awesome staff. Miguel, the manager, was very helpful in resolving an issue I had with my vehicle.

I was planning to bring my car here for a tune-up -- after reading about all the awful experiences the people had there I won't go near the place! The lame "apologies" are just stupid. You need better management, a new philosophy (fast, accurate, no "oops", no long waits, no rip-offs for "repairs" that didn't need to be made.) When I start seeing excellent reviews, and no more meaningless apologies, I will consider visiting. A reasonable apology (truthfully) "we are under new management: our wait times have been reduced to no more than one hour; cars are ready when promised; we have replaced or re-trained our mechanics to work skillfully, accurately, and not charge of unnecessary "service" or parts. read more

That bunch of clowns let me shell out $670 online only to cancel my order THREE times (3 times in a row) and every time told me that the tires were not in stock. Went to pep boys last weekend for a brake change and it turned into straight out extortion. After performing an inspection on my vehicle, they tried to talk me into a new set of tires, new transmission and fix my alignment. After seeing the price I decided it would be better to hold off on any of those pricey changes until I had a second opinion. Since I was already there and desperately needed new brakes I asked for them to just change my brakes. I made the critical mistake of not asking for a new price for brake change so when I came back 2 hours later to hear my bill was $800 I was livid. They charged over twice the price any other location would and robbed me blind. Next week I took my car to dealer for an inspection, gave them pep boys report for their suggested changes, and was told all of them were completely unnecessary. have to add to all the other terrible experiences. everyone was polite and nice but didn't know what the hell they were doing...after screaming and yelling as they had to fix what never needed fixing they charged a fortune, i demanded a rental ar and took my car (towed) to my dealer who said the problem was CREATED by faulty installation. Ordered a Purolator transmission filter and gasket. I opted for the store pick up option instead of the ship to home. Once I arrived at location I approached parts counter gave name and phone number. Employee went to the back and came back with a white box with black letters. I asked what it was and he said that it was what I ordered. I told him that I had ordered a purolator brand filter and not a no name brand. Counter guy said that its all the same stuff. I took out filter and showed him that 1st of all Purolator is made in USA and has a good quality filter element the one he gave me said made in Taiwan and had what looked like a paper element. Then I showed him the gasket and said Purolator includes a gasket that's similar to OEM and not a cheap rubber one. Then I said bottom line this is not what I ordered. He went to the back again came back and said this is what we carry and that I probably made a mistake ordering. I told him I did not make a mistake and showed him my phone with the email I received stating order was ready for pickup and it said Purolator. The guy went into the pep boys website on the computer they have on the counter to show me I made a mistake. He pulled up the part online it said Purolator and had the same number as the no name box. He then said well this is what we carry and all parts are the same anyways. I canceled the order and ended up going to advance autoparts for the Purolator filter. Bait and switch ?? Careful with parts you receive from them. I had similar issue with cv shaft. Brand on the website was a1 cardone. Part I received was a no name brand part with packaging that had no name on it. Only reason I kept it was that it has lifetime warranty so I figured if it fails I can get another one. This seems to be a problem with pepboys as far as showing name brand product and selling their brand or no name cheap Taiwan or Chinese made part. read more

I wish I could give less than 1 star! The only reason I came to Pep Boys was because they had a tire in stock that they could put on before the leaves fall. I usually use my local mechanic but thought he wouldn't be able to get as good of a deal on tires as a chain. I was correct however I would pay him extra in a heart beat next time!! The staff at Pep Boys in Hackensack is completely disorganized and one person has no clue what anyone else is doing. Also they are very condescending and act as if its a bother to help you get everything done! Excuse me for asking you to do your job! I talked to a guy Paul when I got there after waiting for 10 minutes, he ignored me at first and then seemed confused that I was there to get my tires changed. After realizing that I had an appointment scheduled he FINALLY took my keys and gave one of the technicians my information without knowing which car was mine or where it was! Thoroughly decide whether the small amount of extra money you save by using this chain is worth the headache and aggrevation from their incompetent staff. I will not be using them again. Though the employees in the store themselves are polite and friendly, I only found issues with the Service & Tires Staff. read more

I took my car here today because the Mazda dealership is closed on weekends. I had a run in with the side walk when my rear-wheel drive car hit some ice. It messed up my rear alignment a little, so it pulled slightly left while driving. I went to Pep Boys, who told me I would have to replace the rear-tires and that I need my alignment fixed. I knew I needed alignment, and I was happy to replace my rear tires since my sports tires aren't so great in the snow. They told me it would only take an hour-hour and a half. So anyways, they didn't have my tire size, but told me these other tires would be exactly the same and wouldn't affect the car at all. I waited in store for an hour, then walked in the cold to get something to eat with my husband and daughter. We came back an hour later (it was already two hours when we got back), and the car was still in the same spot we left it, not worked on at all and everyone who was there when we left was gone. I asked why my car was still sitting there, and then they went out and got it (there wasn't any other customer there-they just forgot about my car). Anyways, they mounted the tires on the rims, and then they moved it to do the alignment. An hour later, my rear wheels were still untouched, they told me it was done, and my husband (who is a huge car buff and if we had the equipment would've done it himself) wanted to know why my wheels were still messed up. We had to pay before we got the keys back, and then we took it for a drive, it pulls sharply to the right now. Instead of correcting the alignment in the rear tires and then adjusting the front (front end was perfect before going in there) they left the back the same and just adjusted the front. The mechanic told the service agent that he didn't have enough time to fix it again. I went in wanting a refund for them wasting my three hours (by the time I finally left Pep Boys after my complaints, it had already been almost 5 hours) and not even fixing the alignment-actually making it much worse, and they brought the service manager to me, who actually yelled at me and tried telling me it was because I only replaced two tires and that the size wasn't the same as the original and that's why it the alignment was messed up. So with him trying to prove me wrong when I said the guy told me to replace just the back two tires, he pulled up all the old work orders, when he realized he was wrong (it actually said just to replace rear tires) he yelled at me about the tire size, even though he approved the tire size after the associate asked him a question when I thought replacing it with a different size would damage the car. In the end, he yelled at me, then he got moody with my husband, and when my husband demanded they give us the paperwork with the corrections they made, the manager took another 45 minutes to bring that out. In the end, I have no refund and I'm very angry about wasting my money. I will be taking it to Mazda and if anything is wrong, I plan on going back to Pep Boys with my repair costs for their shoddy work. So much for their personal satisfaction guaranteed. read more

Worst ever experience in this shop. I went there, because my nissan dashboard was showing 'service engine soon' indicator. I explained the the problem, also i told that i have to replace radio for my car. The sales person suggested for PM checkup ($23 cost), with this mechanic will list all the issue. After 45 minutes, mechanic told everything is fine except front breaks and back struts/suspensions. I was surprised to see the observations, I asked how that indicator will be off? he said it will go after oil change. I doubt if he cared to open bonnet and see engine etc. The cooling liquid was completely drained, he did not seen sound of engine when it starts etc. All such important observation were missing in his list. Sales person misread the observation report, and prepared invoice to replace front as well as back brakes replaced. I pointed out that only front breaks needs to be replaced, when i talked to mechanic in person. i agreed for Break-replacement, oil change and radio installation (i wanted to install new cd-receiver which i bought myself). It took ages to get this done, they messed up with wrong parts etc. i entered the shop approx 1pm, and until 5:45pm nothing was ready yet. I requested them multiple times to check for radio installation. At 5:45pm radio-installation expert said he needs wire harness and face for it. i provided him harness. It was already 5:45pm, so he said he cannot do this now. I talked to sales guy and store supervisor. Store supervisor is so adamant to take any responsibility. He charged me extra $49.99 for radio installation PLUS i have to pay $20 to mechanic for the face he has used from his locker. I was surprised to see when supervisor asked me to pay him separately. at 6:30 i got key in hand. when i started car, i saw it is still showing 'service engine soon' indicator. When i pointed out to Supervisor, he bluntly blamed me that i have not told in advance. and hence the problem is taken care of. After wasting approximate 6 hours, and spending much money; i took back original problem home. It was not diagnosed nor resolved. Supervisor specifically mentioned, mechanic will see only the things he is supposed to check. I really laughed at this statement. I wonder the mechanic could not see the indicator on the dashboard in front of him? For all faults and mistakes, supervisor did not say a word of sorry. In fact, while leaving I said sorry for all chaotic situation because i was emotionally shocked with such situation. Summary is: pep-boys are money leechers. They charge high but dont get you that quality service. There is no coordination in their work. It is highly miscommunication within themselves. read more
