I…read morewas test driving a used car from a guy late at night and the only mechanic in the area still open was his mechanic, so we stopped in to talk to him about the car (I know, I should have had an objective mechanic check it out). The Hillcrest mechanic told me that even though the ABS warning light was on, the ABS absolutely worked, the front end was tights, and he'd buy it if he had the money. I bought the car and learned the next day from my mechanic, that not only was the ABS not working, but if the light is on it means it absolutely CANNOT work. It would cost almost $400 (and the front end was loose in 2 places). So I called Hillcrest and told the mechanic that I bought the car on his word that the ABS worked. He denied ever saying it worked. I asked if he would fix it at half price. "Not gonna happen." Click. I'm not wining about it, caveat emptor, I did see the warning light, and I still got an ok price on a decent car. I'm posting this to document the mechanic's dishonesty.

This was my experience today:…read more 7:15 am I called to inquire about brake services. I was forwarded to a technician who gave me a consult, rough quote, and am 11am appointment time. 10:30 am I arrived at Murphy's and checked in with a cashier, and was connected with Dan, who serviced the car. Dan was able to take my car within 10 minutes, and took the car for a test drive and got it in the garage for an inspection. 11:00am Chuck came to offer me the specific fix that needed to be done on my front brakes, and advised me on the remaining life expectancy of the rear brakes. As all that was needed was the front brakes, Chuck told me I'd be out in roughly an hour. I asked if they could change the oil as well, and he agreed. I inquired on the price, and Chuck told me specifically. I inquired about with him about an ATM on site, as I would need one to do a bank transfer. Since there is no ATM there, Chuck offered me a loaner car to go take care of the banking needs. I was given the keys, and I took care of my business. 12:15pm Dan took the car for a test drive, and returned the vehicle right in front of me. He explained the status of the repairs done and wished me well. I paid the cashier, and was treated with kindness. 12:30pm I left Murphy's. My last bit of context: Two days ago my brakes started making noises. As I'm not a mechanical kinda guy, I was nervous about what needed to happen. My wife needed to leave out of state today, and take our only car for her brother's funeral. Of the four shops I called this morning, Murphy's was the most cost-effective, and had the most pleasant demeanor over the phone. I had never been to Murphy's before, and I was concerned about being held up longer than needed to be. I was given kind, calming, and professional service throughout my entire experience. Chuck's character, as well as the character from his staff are similar to the small town I grew up in... even though we're right on the edge of the city. I'm grateful for an incredibly calming, positive, and professional experience today. I'll be back for other services, in the future as my car needs.

The Beloved was ahead of me in the Scamp and I was following in the Prius. I noticed that the running lights of the Scamp weren't working. The brakes and turn lights were fine...just no running lights. I thought this odd as we just had gotten all the lights on the Scamp checked out and they were all brought up to snuff. "Look for easiest solution first" I thought. I popped a VOM on the connector on the back of the RAV4 and found that the sockets for the running lights on the connector were dead. First I called up UHaul and got shuffled off to the corporate phone line. THAT thing is a joke. Not Maplewood's fault...corporate owns that one. I drove up and talked with Kevin in the hitch department (His view on the corporate call center is about the same as mine. "They're idiots.") and he got me in in two days. I got there and he was ready for me...no waiting! All during the process he kept me appraised of what was going on. "Crimped and broken wire!" was his diagnosis. He picked out a new connector from stock and put it on. He also shrink-wrapped all the connectors. Looking at it...a beautiful job. Half hour, tops. Now then, I was expecting to pay a couple of hundred dollars to get this fixed. Nope! Eight-six bucks and change! I was pleasantly surprised. All works now. All the folks at the UHaul were great.
