Came here exploring Mystic and found one thing I liked but it was extremely overpriced for a used consignment store. Some items are new but some are used and can definitely be dropped down in price a notch. Everyone was friendly here and parking lot designated for the shop makes it convenient. This place is great - I have been to Pennywise many times as a consignor and shopper. The 50/50 split is more than fair to not have the hassle of selling leftover name brand clothes on eBay or elsewhere. They also have a decent men's department upstairs and my wife always finds something new and different each time we go. They have great sales and even regular priced items are better than going to TJ Maxx - plus It's family owned so we feel good about going there. If you end up at the seaport or downtown mystic it's walking distance and worth the trip. read more

My all time favourite consignment shoppe! Donna is a wonderful business owner and person. I love that this place is family owned and family run. They curate the shoppe beautifully and tend to choose a nice array of fun and elevated items. My only critiques would be that sometimes it can be a bit pricy for consignment, and the racks can feel a bit stuffed. I would love to see them start a Poshmark account to help move older inventory and it would open them up to people like myself who would love to continue to shop with them even while I'm across the country in California lol. Personal note, my mom and I used to both shop and consign here together before she passed away. It was one of our favourite places to visit together, and we often had really heartwarming conversations with Donna and her daughter about our love of animals. If you are a buyer at Pennywise, you get a nice selection of name brand clothing and I appreciate their eye for good quality consignments which clearly benefits the store and not the consignor. There is a complete lack of transparency for a consignor's account at PennyWise. My last delivery of UGG boots, Cole Hann purse and shoes, Eddie Bauer winterwear, Gap jeans, and other good names and good quality items has yielded very low returns to me, not sure how Pennywise made out, but I'm sure they did. Each time I stop by to check on the balance of my account (aways for much smaller amounts than I would have expected) I ask the attendant are all my items sold, or which of my items have sold...she always says, "Oh I don't know those details, I can only see if there is a balance owed to you." When I stop by other times, an sometimes again, there is a small amount paid out, I never know if all my items are sold. She advises I can have the owner call you, and once the owner called me to say that I have no more items pending sale on my account. Other consignment shops I used, like Love me Two Times in Norwich, or Twice as Nice kids consignment in Mystic, they have had a detailed labeling system on the tag and the computer inventory of the brand name, size and style of item you brought and what it sold for including markdown discounts. They were always transparent with a printout of my account anytime I wanted to see where I was at. Pennywise NEVER offers such detailed information. Did my items sell? Did they sell at the first price they set? a reduced price? never sold and donated? I remember many years ago the Pennywise owner was investigated for tax fraud for under reporting of profits and taxes. I would think their business practices would have become more transparent since then. Be fair Pennywise! You make money off of inventory you never pay for! I will no longer be consigning with them. read more

This Yelp listing is for their shop by the Seaport but they also have a location on Cottrell Street that has children's clothes too. The store is well organized with all women's on the bottom floor & men's upstairs. Lots to look through but easy to navigate. Prices are definitely reasonable. They are picky about what they take in. Certain brands (Old Navy & JCPenny) you'll never find here. And I've had a few items denied when they found stains that we had missed. Great inventory of clothes, footwear & accessories. The best thing about Pennywise if you're consigning clothes is their payment system: they'll cut you a check any time you want. Some other places make you wait until a certain day or charge you to give you your money. Pennywise makes it easy. They did have a Marc Jacobs bag for $125. MAJOR con for me was the cat walking around the store. Especially since I'm allergic! !! And the new downtown location is very bare. I"m changing my review because I've started consigning here and I love the process. You walk in, the owner will check out what you have and tell you what will or won't sell. The whole process takes 5 minutes! They are fair and reasonable and they do not charge an up front fee like a lot of other places... awesome! Another thing I like as a consignor is that your product stays on the floor for 6-8 weeks. If it sells, you get a check, if it doesn't... it is donated to a charity. For me, that is the best of both worlds. I might make a little bit of extra cash, but if don't... at least the clothes find a good home. The consignor gets 50% of the sale, so you can make a decent chunk of change. A few days after I dropped off my stuff, I stopped by to do some shopping. Note to those allergic: there is a cat that hangs out in this store. I don't know about this cat, but most of them like to rub their bodies on things, and if you are highly allergic, maybe you want to avoid buying clothing from a store where a cat might have rubbed itself against the clothing racks. That aside, the staff is not friendly, including when you are GIVING them your clothes to sell. I say "give" because you are not allowed to get them back if they don't sell. Also, there is no accounting of your items that do or don't sell. There is just a check that you can pick up at the store's convenience. I can't complain too much because they accepted a lot of my stuff that didn't fit into their posted stringent guidelines (such as brands) and if I waited long enough to pick the check up it was for a decent amount. read more

Couple years ago I was driving home from somewhere decided to detour into mystic found this cute little shop and purchased some treasures. This weekend while on a trip with my husband again we stopped at the shop. I was so excited to show him the store I had raved about. Unfortunately, I feel the quality of the shop is no longer there. We purchased several items, which I thought I had checked, but I guess not Goodnuf. My husband or a pair of shoes which we thought was such a great deal at $13. He wore them that night while we went out and they literally fell apart while we were out and about. He was embarrassed and I was mortified. I know this is a consignment shop and the items are used, but they should last at least one wearing. It was quite obvious, After a more careful inspection, that they were glued together specifically for sale. I will no longer have this happy memory of this shop. Buyer beware read more

I love consignment shopping and this is one that I've been dying to stop in for years but have never had the time. I finally got to stop in on Sunday (12/14). Although I found some great things - the girl behind the counter never once even looked up from her phone - the entire time I was in there (1/2 hour). The pretty kitty that was laying on the counter had more personality than her. Another customer walked in and she didn't acknowledge her either. I'm not saying that you have to trip over yourself to welcome someone but just a little friendly look up might be nice. So I found a handbag - I went up to the register, she rang it in, I handed her my $20 - she handed me back my change and then just walked away from behind the counter. Never even thanked me or even acknowledged my presence LOL! It was unbelievable! I actually said thank you (just as a reflex)! I walked out of there and just shook my head. Really? Is that the acceptable level of customer service nowadays? I have been in thousands of consignment shops and usually owners/workers are very nice - this one, not so much. I wouldn't allow it to not make me shop there cause they had alot of nice things but if the owners read this, you might actually want to make this a teachable moment for the non communicative and non friendly girl you've got representing your store. I was taken advantage of and treated very rudely by the woman in this shop and I would not recommend anyone consign here. I went in with ten dresses (Anna Sui, Miss Sixty, Cache, Max and Cleo, BeBE, ect) a Juicy Couture sweater and a pair of 7 for all Mankind jeans. I was told that my items would be for sale for six weeks and that I may take back the items that did not sell. When I left this first time I did not have a good feeling about the woman I was working with. She was very standoffish and unfriendly, but I brushed it off. After six weeks I went in to see if anything had sold. I again was received by a very chilly persona and told that nothing had sold. At this point, confused about what to do, I asked if I needed to go around the store and gather my items. I was told I could wait another two weeks and then come back, which I did. Two weeks later when I went back I again was very uncomfortable and fed up with the experiences I was having with this rude woman. She told me that "something" had sold and that her salesgirl would cut me a check. I was also told that I would have to collect my other items from the store myself if I wanted them back. While waiting for the check I did my best to find all of my items which was difficult because she he did not keep track of what item or items actually sold. I managed to find seven out of ten dresses, and my jeans. Three dresses and the sweater were nowhere to be found so I expected that I would have a decent little check considering the prices are high and the cut is 50%. I was really annoyed when I received a check for fifteen dollars. The woman was even more rude than ever since I chose to take my other things back. She didn't even say thank you for the business I had given her, or goodbye, or have a nice day! This time period was from May 15th to about June 23 and today I have noticed one of my dresses that I could not find in the store on a mannequin listed "ON SALE"!! I accept responsibility for being naive and not understanding the rules but that is no excuse to be so rude and blatantly rip people off. Especially in this economy I want to be able to donate my items to my charity of choice not hers which is herself! RUDE RIPOFF!! read more
