I'm in the burger business, so I'm probably harder on a hamburger than I ought to be. We ordered a couple of burgers to go from Penny's Diner in Wellington, Kansas, along with a Reuben, fresh-cut fries, and grilled jalapeños. I'll just say it: these folks can flat-out cook. The burgers were phenomenal. Not "pretty good for a diner." Not "good because we were hungry." I'm talking about a damn good hamburger, period. Cooked right, great flavor, and the kind of burger that makes a guy who sells burgers for a living sit there chewing and thinking, Well, hell... these people know what they're doing. The Reuben was just as good, the fresh-cut fries were the real deal, and those grilled jalapeños were the perfect finishing touch. I don't hand out compliments to the competition like Halloween candy, but credit where credit is due. Penny's knocked it out of the park. If you're rolling through Wellington, Kansas, and you're hungry, stop at Penny's. Just don't tell Willie & Dicks I sent you. 5 stars. We'd absolutely eat there again. read more

Wellington is a very small town about 1/2 hour away from Wichita. We were camping at the nearby KOA and decided to stop in for breakfast. It definitely looks like an old time diner both on the outside and the artwork inside and the well worn booth seats. We were there around 10:00 a.m. on a Thursday so it wasn't too crowded at that time. Our server was friendly and food didn't take too long although it seemed they do a big take out business. The cooks were great, they would break out in a dance every now and then while preparing delicious food. We have so much leftover, we have enough for breakfast tomorrow! I'm sad we're leaving so soon so no time to try it for dinner and dessert! read more

Kansas 01-2024 Tony and I stopped in Wellington Kansas on our way to see Laura Ingalls Wilder's home and we stopped at Penny's Diner for lunch. Qe both had tea to drink no beer poor Tony. What a darling place. Friendlies people I have met in a long time. We got there and there was only one person in the restaurant. We sat wherever and the server brought us menus and silverware, took our drink order. By the time she brought those we were ready to order. Hubs had the patty melt with tots, I had the French dip with tots, granddaughter #1 had salad with grilled chicken, granddaughter #2 have the pancakes, eggs and toast. Food came out quick and hot!!!! And let me tell you it was delicious!! Only one complained from gd#1...she said here chicken tastes funny and dry. Every thing else !! This is such a great little diner! Love that it's open 24 hours. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are always available and the food is always delicious! I discovered this place over 10 years ago. First time I've been here since I got the app. Not much changed. Feels like you time machined to the 50's, which is great ambience. Now, to the food. It's cooked right in front of you, so you know what you are getting. Blue plate special was meatloaf. They were out. Hubby ordered a burger with avacado. They were out of avacado. Other than that, the burger was delicious, according to hubby. Excellent onion rings. I tried one. I had the chef salad. It was huge! Full of ham, turkey and all the promised veggies. They provided a small bowl of dressing and 3 packets of crackers on the side. I was impressed, as it looked like the plates they made in my childhood. I've never been disappointed there. this diner is one of the best I've been t, the pancakes are cooked perfectly every time. they even made my special needs child a Mickey Mouse shaped pancake a few time. They are patient when we are undecided on what to order because everything sounds delicious. The chicken Fried steak is an excellent portion for the price. It was good quality not full of cartilage pieces or bone fragments that I've had served at other restaurants. The are always quick to ask us if we need anything and are so kind when our small children think that they need something. Average breakfast with good staff, but pricey for a small town diner. Two eggs bacon toast hash browns was over 7 bucks. The coffee is weak but that's probably a given at any diner. The bacon wasn't crispy and neither were the hash browns, but the pancake we had was big and tasty. Don't want be too critical of a small town location, so it was pretty standard for any diner. Nothing to knock your socks off, but you can get a hot meal that's pretty good. read more

We've eaten there several times. Decent food, good atmosphere. However, tonight was not a good experience. There were about a doz customers. We ordered quickly after being seated. Waited at least 45 min and customers who came in 20 min after we did received their food. We'd been getting impatient anyway. We decided to leave after asking the waitress if our order was turned in. As we left without our food, the plates that we saw were well done and not appealing at all. Seemed there was alot of disorganized cooks working on the grill and fryers. The service was very disappointing since our experience had been different before. It'll be awhile before try again. p.s. my husband ordered hamburger and onion rings. I ordered grilled chicken. This is a great little diner in the middle of a very small town just south of Wichita, Kansas. The wait staff are very friendly, prompt and fun. It is fashioned like an old dining car diner. The place is well worn but clean. We had the Monterrey Chicken which was very tasty. Another favorite was Biscuits and Gravy, standard fare but well done. My daughter had several orders of bacon, because, well, she's seven and picky. The bacon was great, crispy and tasty. Topped it off with a chocolate malt and vanilla shake!!! Looked nice from the street, it wasn't too bad inside. But that's where the compliments end. It took a long time for a waitress to come out, order our drinks and meal. When we got the "Special" of the day, it was cold. We had to chase one of the waitresses down to reheat our meal in the microwave. Once it came out it got cold in less than 2 minutes. We had to wait several minutes before someone came out from the back to pay for our meal. We have vowed not to return and find another place if we are in the area again. read more

The girlfriend and I stopped here on the way to Kansas from Texas. Old school feel with pretty good food. She got the chicken fried steak sandwich which comes with a very generous portion of meat. I had a bite and it tasted very good. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak which came with a decent amount of meat and melted Swiss with onions and peppers. The food came out fast, was hot, and not too heavy on the stomach. We were fairly hungry and it filled both of us up. Our waitress was very nice and did great. Others seemed to do the same. While not perfect, Penny's strives to emulate the great diners of the east coast. I grew up in NJ and know my diners. They do it right; open 24 hours, breakfast any time, and counter seating where you can watch the cooks. Friendly waitresses, too. We went there for supper before going to the motel on our road trip through Kansas. Went back the next morning for a fine diner breakfast.
