I recently used PennyGreen to have my front lawn totally stripped out and had a sprinkler system installed, with seeding and all completed. Matt and his crew did an excellent job and I couldn't be more pleased with the results of my new, green front lawn. It seems I'm not the only person he tries to brainwash into getting a lawn sprinkler. When I left a review, he commented about me being "unemployed." I specifically told him I am on disability by the doctors. If he wants to bring personal info of someone into a review, it speaks volume to his nature. Don't just look at my review. I was told that Pennygreen was expensive "but they knew what they were doing". So, I gave them a try and they were indeed very expensive. But the first year I was satisfied with the results. So, the following years, I used them just for a general "turf program" which involved fertilizing, aerating, seeding, etc. But within a couple of months (of an admittedy hot summer) my front lawn looked liked Normandy Beach after D-Day, and I spent a lot of time doing a lot of re--seeding on my own. But, since I attributed much of the problem to the weather, I contacted the owner about the cost of an early (November 2024) renewal for 2025. Usually (Matt) the owner sends a pdf file with all of the particulars. But this time he just typed in the figure "$949" in an email. Since the early renewal had been just $799 the previous year, I replied asking him why there was such a steep increase. He simply replied that the $799" was from two years ago. When I sent him the pdf file from last year he didn't reply. Then I copied the file, pasted it in the email, and highlighted the "2024" date and the "$799" early renewal price. At that point he sent me a current pdf price quote of "$829", with no further explanation. When I asked him what had happened to the $949 he replied: "Had u confused with your neighbor I'm 60 it happens Lol" The problem being that none of my neighbors use Pennygreen. I then sent him a very angry email reminding him that between the lawn service and sprinkler system, I had paid him more than $12,000 over the past two years, and in return he tries to cheat me out of another $120. No reply. I understand that there are specific NJ laws regarding "price gouging" which I intend to further investigate. I recommend anyone considering using them to check the Better Business Bureau site for an accredited lawn service (which Pennygreen is not) in their area (a service I did not until recently know that they even provided). PS In response to Matt's reply: I don't really consider people who live on on a different street from mine technically neighbors. But even if I did, virtually all of them have the same 1/4 acre lot that I do. So, their cost for early renewal shouldn't be $120 higher than mine, either. And the idea that you are so superhuman as to be able to mentally access all of the details of all of your customers' account mentally, and have no real need to actually look up them before sending them a price quote, is ludicrous. Don't worry, sir. I am very much looking forward to using the BBB's search system to find a landscaping company which they have actually accredited. read more

The owner of this company is rude, condescending, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. We pre-paid for monthly fertilizing, however, the grass in our back yard has been torn up for three months because we are having a pool installed. I emailed Matt politely asking if we could receive a credit towards a future service since they haven't been able to service our lawn. When I never received a response, I called and left a polite voicemail. I received a response from Matt at 11:15PM berating me, cursing at me, and telling me to install a sprinkler system. If the answer was no, that would have been fine, however, his response was disgusting. I wish I could post his voicemail here. I have never been spoken to that way by anyone, especially a business man. Not only that, but we have since discovered that one of his employees stole a water jug full of change from our friend's house and, when confronted, Matt said "you have no proof if you have no cameras." read more

Looking for a rude, condescending bully with questionable business practices? Then Matt at Pennygreen is your man. We contracted Matt to create several flower beds (two with berms), and plant a few trees. He created the berms with the soil taken from the lawn that was filled with grass. Within a week, my flowerbeds were filled with grass and weeds. I called him to ask him if he used fresh top soil. He skirted around the issue like a was an idiot, and TOLD me I could hire a weed picking crew, or subscribe to his weed preventing treatments at $1500! Then I was reprimanded for not applying weed preventer. Our contract also stated the planting of three trees that we were providing. He said call me when you get them. When I got them, I called three times, he did not return any of the calls. I'm done. Small claims court sounds good. read more

If you like dealing with an ignorant, short tempered, foul mouthed, ego maniac, Matt's your guy. We needed our irrigation system winterized, and Matt accommodated us. I had a question as to were the the 1/2" threaded plug was that was removed to blow the system out and why it wasn't put back, so I called Matt. Matt was quick to interrupt me and tell me that every one else over ten years winterized it wrong, and that plug should be left out. I tried to explain that we've never had a freeze up but he interrupted again, and said, "I don't have time for this, good bye", then hung up on me. The guy obviously has issues he can't get a handle on. A week went by and I wanted to find the plug for the start up in the spring, so I went to open the weatherproof metal enclosure, then I noticed the two bolts are missing that keep the door sealed tight from weather to protect the electrical outlet and timer box inside the housing. I found the plug inside the box and then called Matt to ask about the bolts. He immediately gets defensive and tells me they had no reason to touch the bolts. I tried to explain you can't open the door without removing the two bolts but he interrupted me again, and when I raised my voice and said, "Excuse me sir, I'm talking! He cuts me off again with, "Oh really, F*ck You!", and hangs up on me again. I was never rude or offensive with this guy until he interrupted me a 3rd time and I raised my voice. If he's losing business because of his rudeness, that would explain his anger issues. I can see how nobody would call him back or give a good reference. I'll never call him again, or recommend his company. read more

I've been a customer of this business for 15 years. They installed my sprinkler service at that time. I've had blow outs and start ups every year since then. I've had minor repair service done during this time as well. An issue cropped up last fall when we contracted to have our septic emptied. This was a new company as our previous service is no longer in business. When they dug out the cover they stopped and showed us that the sprinkler line was directly over the cover. They could not completely remove it and as a result could not completely empty the septic tank. I don't know what happened with the previous service and perhaps we have not had the tank emptied properly for many years. When I called Pennygreen quoted $169 / hr for service to move the tubing around the tank cover. I mentioned that his install was the cause of the issue and he should do the work gratis. He told me he would stand by his work for one or maybe two years, but not 15 and suggested the new sewer service company was not competent. When I explained the problem was not a repair or worn out service it was an install mistake, he became belligerent. When I asked for a recommendation for a company who could do the sewer service with his curt answer was I'm not in that business. Well, I will no longer do business with Pennygreen. read more

Penny Green are awful. Mulch all over in the summer, snow plowed sloppy. When you call to complain you are met with an attitude. They are rude, unprofessional and do a horrible job. I am trying to, along with my neighbors to get them out of our development. Save yourself aggravation and use someone else. read more
