I'm…read moresure there must be fish and chips closer to home, but sadly, if there are they aren't on Yelp yet, so I decided to go for a bit of a walk to the Ancient Mariner. I was a bit surprised to discover there was minimal seating indoors, although I'm not really sure why, since I've not dined in at many fish shops. The seating was small shippy-things (I'm a bit of a landlubber, so am not sure of their technical term) around large barrels. They were quite uncomfortable to sit on, but since we didn't want to walk all the way home with cold fish, sit on them we did. My husband and I shared two pieces of snapper and chips, with some malt vinegar. And oh god, it was delicious. The fish was amazing - fleshy and white and great flavour, and the batter was the perfect thickness and seasoned with lemon pepper (I think). Chips were chunky and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. I'll definitely be back here - even if I have to perch on an uncomfortable piece of ship furniture to do so!

Charging the usual prices and serving the usual food for an Auckland fish and chip shop - fish, hotdogs, potato fritters, nuggets and chips, as well as a range of Chinese food, Bilbo's could be just another takeaway store, except it's not. What sets it apart as a complete winner in my book is its opening hours. Bilbo's is one of the only takeaway stores in Mt Eden that is open late. Really late. Bilbo's is where you head at the end of your night out. My friends and I used to taxi straight to Bilbo's from our after-balls and big nights in town, grab some hot chips and nuggets and eat them on the walk home. Classic. The staff are pretty friendly at ol Bilbo's too - I imagine by being open so late they see their fair share of craziness, yet they manage to keep a smile on their face and provide very fast service. Good food, fast food, friendly staff, opne late = two thumbs up from me!

My husband and I shared a strawberry malt milkshake, regular burger with egg, and fish burger. We loved it all except the fish burger was very underwhelming. You can build up hype about a eatery quite easily these days through social media and such. But to…read morebuild a reputation of quality requires much more. And when you only sell one item, you better make it the best thing ever to stay around. I have heard about Better burgers through friends, colleagues and everyone was going on about how good the burgers were or how busy it is that they make you wait ages. With much expectation I came over for lunch today. I read all the reviews on yelp about it, some good some really bad. So I wanted to make up my own mind, since they only have essentially one burger on the menu. I chose to order the standard hamburger and a double cheese burger. Forgive me if I have discounted the veggie burger as an option. To me, a good burger has to have a number of qualities. 1. The buns should be toasted slightly, and not soggy. 2. The meat pattie has to be juicy and not dry. 3. Everything should be seasoned properly. And 4. The burger has to have the correct meat to bread ratio. To my surprise. Better burger failed to impress today. I have taken photos for this review. As you can see, the double cheese has the perfect meat to bread ratio while the hamburger with the lonely pattie does not. That's not really a biggie to some. Because they might not be able to finish a double. I do sense that's a marketing play though, since the difference between the two burgers is quite minimal. But what's unforgivable is that my buns were stone cold, and soggy from the tomato and wet lettuce. Don't get me wrong, the patties were hot. It's just the buns were cold, it's such a big contrast in temperature. It made the eating experience unpleasant. And flavour wise, the burger was poorly seasoned, bordering bland. It screamed for more sauce. The Chips were over seasoned. Now, last thing I have to be fair about is that the prices are very reasonable for a burger. $6.50 is not expensive by any means. And I do like the soft buns, they would be much better if they were warm though. Overall, I think I would revisit them in a while to review my review. As for now, you can have better burgers at any place else but here.

A "healthier", fresher, hyped, well marketed and more thought through version of a normal McDeeeeees burger. I've also read a few of the yelp reviews of this place and it's true, the more simple the dish the harder it is to execute. If you only have 4 or 5 ingredients in there... You better be careful how you prepare each and every one of them (MKR has taught me a lot hahahahaha) However, the buns are delightfully crispy on the outside and super soft and fluffy on the inside. The patty was seasoned, juicy and oily. Tomato and lettuce were fresh. Pickles were pickled. Fries were a tad too salty but nice and crispy with the skin on (plus the machine they make it with is mesmerizing haha I want one!) but that vanilla milkshake, bro.... So thick it felt like my brain was gna explode from the pressure to suck the milkshake out of the straw. I think the milkshake was the most filling part of the meal. So much so that I felt bloated after haha. Is it sad that I find the fries and shake better than the better burger? Hahaha okok I'll stop. Would I come here again? only if I'm drunk and hungry in town... That would really hit the spot.. (And then run across the road for some gooey mozzarella sticks...)

The White Lady is a food truck serving a variety of burgers and sandwiches, as well as chips. There is no seating, so they offer take away only. I was a little uncomfortable, as there was a group of homeless people sitting and laying down right next to the food truck. Because of this, I just wanted to grab my food and go. The food took about 15 mins to finish and we were out of there. They did have tomato sauce, as well as garlic aoli sauce, free to take as much as you want. I ordered the White Lady, which is one of their signature burgers. It had a beef patties, Scotch steak, Colby cheese, bacon, fried egg, grilled pineapple, fried onions, lettuce, and tomato. It sounded like a ton of ingredients, but I figured I had to try their namesake burger. I had taken my food back to my hotel, which was only about a 10-15 minute walk back. Understandably, the burger was a bit soggy. That wasn't the worst part though. My main gripe with this burger though, was the Scotch steak. It was probably my fault for not entirely knowing what a Scotch steak was. The steak was chewy and I was NOT able to bite it off each time I took a bite of the burger. After a couple bites struggling to separate the steak from the rest of the burger, I ended up just taking the steak out and eating it with a fork and knife. I cannot understand why you would put something on a burger if it cannot be bitten off solely with your teeth. It goes against the point of having something handheld. On top of that, the steak was very bland. The burger patties itself was okay, nothing amazing. I come from the United States, the home of fatty foods and the best burgers, so maybe I just have high standards. For me, this place was a one and done just to see what the hype was about.

Adding to the rise of Asian fusion restaurants around the Auckland CBD, Lucky Buddha adds its own…read moreflavour to the expanding Fort Street scene. With Korean owners and a Filipino chef, the Asian fusion tag is well and alive as East meets East. This makes things interesting on the menu: there's beef tatare, lamb ribs, 'halo-halo' (a Filipino dessert), sake, buns. You don't quite know what to settle for. Inside, a shared long table dominates one side but most diners prefer to be seated at separate tables. Going there at 6pm on a Friday night, we were asked whether we had reservations to be seated at one of those separate tables. I got nothing against the shared table philosophy but typically on a weeknight, I had my bag full of things collected from a week of teaching, and an end of the week desire to lean back and ooze. That night though, it was considered too busy so we didn't have a choice but to sit at the bar stools at the long communal table. The drunken chicken first caught my eye but it was nothing like what I had expected! I had imagined juicy and tender whole slices of chicken soaked in rice wine as a traditional Chinese dish. I guess this is where the fusion fact comes in. My friend did like it though, the bean sprouts and fresh coriander in the salad made it refreshing and moorish. My favourites were the beef tatare and the spicy chicken. The chicken was juicy and not soaked in oils, accompanied with rice balls lightly dusted with crispy seasoning. Even though it was listed as a shared plate, I could have easily settled on this as a main for myself. The beef tatare was one of the best I've had - it was kept light with nashi pear and crisps, a good balance of sweet and savoury flavours. There's so much on the dessert menu that I wanted to try - the durian ice cream, halo-halo...but the combination of chocolate, coconut and pandan cream was a winner. Have a bit of everything on your spoon and you'll be transported to a waffley soft chocolate heaven. Food is a bit of a hit or miss at The Lucky Buddha. From what I had, I was seduced enough to want to go back and try more - just as we were leaving I saw the dish of lamb ribs that made me want to reach over and snag one. As with most newly opened eateries, the atmosphere is young and bright with waiters attentive to every eye catch. I just wished the dishes came out all at once but I guess that's something you can add while doing the orders. The shared plates were a winner so go along with friends who like to try a bit of everything!
