A proper fish and chips spot! The day we visited Waiheke Island, we stumbled upon The Local and we're glad that we did! Upon walking in, we were greeted by friendly staff and ordered at the counter. We tried the beef burger, hoki fish and 2 kinds of chips (regular and kumara), a fish cake, and calamari. Tartar sauce packs were 50¢ each but malt vinegar was readily available on the table. Everything was piping hot when it came out. The fish was extra crispy, the fries were the perfect texture, the fish cake was delectable, the calamari was tasty, and the burger was very flavorful! The Local is literally a "local gem" of a restaurant located on the main road of Oneroa on Waiheke Island, about 15 mins walk from the ferry. It was definitely a hotter day so taking cover in the shade of the restaurant was quite welcome. The view of the beach at the local is to die for, and really elevates their food to the next level. Unfortunately they sold out of the red snapper for the day so Hoki was our only option, but it was delicious so no one complained. Their fish and chips are their specialty where they utilize a tiger beer batter, and you can order either regular fluffy cut chips or kumara sweet chips. We also tried their fried calamari, fish cake, and beef burger. All of the food was fantastic and really hit the spot, especially after a long hike and time at the beach. Malt vinegar on your fries is a must try btw and really reminds me of the fish and chips in London. I did think it was a bit weird that they charge 50¢ / tartar sauce especially when it comes in a Heinz store bought plastic dipping container, but I suppose it's because it costs a lot to import tartar sauce to the island. A homemade tartar sauce would be preferred if they have the means to make that possible in the future though. But otherwise I highly recommend the local to anyone looking for fish and chips, or a surprisingly quality burger. read more

Great food, staff, location, views and prices! Had the Snapper and Chips, which was perfect!

Snapper is a go-to. Fresh with a tempura batter, it's a great compliment to the kumara fries, which is like a slightly less sweet,sweet potato At first I thought about the veggie burger, but they said the patties were just bought and shipped in, so we settled on two orders of Snapper and an order of kumara fries. The really fresh fish, complimented the Beautiful view. We sat on the patio and had Ocean View on to Oneroa Beach. Very straightforward menu, but with the freshest of the fish, you can't go wrong with the fish and chips. read more

I'll start off with this... I had the best burger I have ever had here. It also has the best view I have ever had eating a burger! The Local is situated on Waiheke Islands main town of Oneroa. If you are on a tour of the island this is the place to stop and grab some lunch or dinner before heading back. It does not have a main entrance on the high street, you have to go down some steps next to Four Square.We went down as a gamble, and boy did it pay off. It also has stunning views. A cheeseburger with amazing meat and slot of cheese in a Waiheke island baked roll was $12, and a bag of chips (the fed two people) was $4. Yes it's a premium burger, but it's 100% worth it. We surveyed the menus up and down the main string of resteraunts and this was Tge Local was the cheapest by a fair bit. For example, the Italian across the roads margarita pizza was $25ish. In terms of drinks they served both fizzy drinks and alcohol. We went for a New Zealand Phoenix Cola and a lemonade. Delicious! The staff were very friendly and also shared their knowledge on the other islands that the resteraunt looked out at. Overall, amazing burger, great value, breathtaking views, and lovely staff. Came to waiheke island and was pleasantly surprised by the Local! It is located along the main road about 15 min walk from the ferry. I had the red snapper battered fish with chips and aioli. Their prices are very reasonable. The view from the little joint is beautiful as you can see the beach. I enjoyed the view as I waited for my order. The fish n' chips are all served take away style. The fish was fresh, flaky, and nice and crispy on the outside. The chips were delicious as well. Recommend this place to anyone who wants some quality fish and chips! read more

Straight forward fish and chips. I had the snapper, which was nicely cooked with good flavor and nice, solid texture, although the breading got a little wet, and I reserve the label of "great" fish and chips for those where things don't get wet. Breading was also a bit heavy to my taste, but certainly nothing offensive or crazy. The chips were good, nicely cooked, but could have used more salt. But I can fix that at the table. Others (who I'm sure will report in soon) had snapper burgers that I think they probably liked a bit more than I liked the fish and chips. But in the end, a good lunch for a reasonable price. If you want the best fish and chips in Waiheke then visit The Local, in the main village of Oneroa. Yes, it's a little pricier than your average fish and chips, but this equates to better quality. The place is down a little alley next to the Four Square - there used to be a different fish and chip place there but the new owners took over and renovated last summer. It offers two types of fish pan fried, battered or crumbed at different price points - delicious freshly caught snapper at $14 or frozen hoki for $6. I'd recommend splashing out. Chips are perfectly crunchy on the outside and pillowy in the middle (it's actually pretty hard to get that perfect fried potato) and there are a number of interesting things on the menu such as mussel fritters along with the usual chip shop burger range. Points of difference from your usual greasy joint is The Local's view overlooking beautiful Oneroa beach, they have tables and chairs inside and on the deck to eat your meal, and they serve beer and wine. I'm not sure what life experiences the other reviewers have had with fish and chips, but to give either the fish or the chips five stars is an insult to oil, fish and potatoes across the globe. They're both...fine; however, neither are fantastic, and it is up for debate whether their slightly-above-mediocrity status warrants the fairly expensive prices. My husband and I ate at The Local for the very first time today for dinner. I ordered the Cheeseburger and was in Awe on how delicious it was. It has really stood out on being one of the most delicious burgers I've ever had. Loved the flavor of the thick beef patty, carmelized onions, beet, & so cheesy. It was a very large burger for me since Im a small girl and usually fill up very fast, so I had to share with my husband. He was blown away as well. I'm so glad we stopped here for dinner and plan on stopping by again before we return to the US. You have to try this place! The staff is so friendly and the food is wonderful! read more

The food is ok, the hoki is a bit oily, but passable. Where this place really bombs is the service. The wait staff seems to be in a competition to be rudest to their guests. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Also, the amount of single use plastic is appalling, and they won't even allow you to bring your own bottle. read more
