When I saw this place as a must place to eat on Yelp, I knew I had to check it out. I mean, who would expect a popular Japanese street food to be in Auckland??? It is literally a Street food stand in downtown and they make it when you order. You can order sweet or savory types and they are pretty decent size. I got the chicken and cheese pancake as well as a red bean pancake. It did take a little long to get the food but as it was made to order, I can understand. The savory pancake are flatter but wider as the sweet ones are fatter and smaller. The savory one was ok, it had good flavor and will go well with hot sauce. I personally like the sweet one (red bean), the flavor was there and I love the crispy texture on the outside. However, I can eat these pancake whenever, and the price is definitely a bonus considering how big/filling these are. read more

This place is a must try! My son ordered the ham and cheese and I ordered the chocolate. They were both delicious. We ended up sharing and really enjoying both the sweet and savory flavors. I dare say this was the best thing I ate my entire stay in Auckland and it was also the least expensive. We were able to stroll and sample the warm deliciousness as we walked and it was quite an enjoyable experience! I love that you can stand and watch the food being made; you can see the entire kitchen. Anyone one in Auckland should at least sample this place. I heard about this place and I wanted to try it. There is garage parking around the area as it is located in the downtown area of Auckland. It's a good, brisk walk from the parking garage. We scanned the menu and we wanted something sweet and salty. We order the pancake with beef and cheese & cinnamon and sugar. they make it fresh on the spot, and let me just say, AMAZING!! There were other Asian places to eat, but this place you could smell the pancakes being cooked. The pancakes were too good, I didn't have time for a picture as we ate it too fast. During our stay in Auckland we were only able to visit this place once, but it was an unforgettable experience. I stayed in Auckland only two nights and I ate here twice, so it's really really good! I'm a huge fan of street food and these Korean pancakes did not disappoint. I can't speak for the sweet options since I only had savory but they were so delicious. Crispy and stuffed, you really only need one to feel full. The only slight downside was it was a bit oily, but that's probably needed to make it crispy. I tried the beef & cheese and the chicken & cheese and they were both really delicious in their own ways. The chicken and cheese had a sort of curry sauce mixed into it, just a heads up if you're into that sort of thing. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Auckland or a native. Stop by this place when I was in Auckland Heard so many good things about this place that I have to go try. I got the 3 sweet pancakes for $10 (two cinnamon and sugar ones and one red bean) and a potato and cheese pancake. Once you order, you are given a ticket to wait for your food. Once we (my mom, sister, and I) got our food we had to try straight away. I tried the potato and cheese one and it was delicious. My mom and sister tried the red bean and the cinnamon sugar. They said it was good. It had to be delicious if my mom burnt her tongue since she couldn't wait to eat. Overall Im glad I came here to try the pancakes. I now totalllllly understand the reason behind No. 1 Pancake's crowd control issue. $4 for a steaming, made to order traditional Korean pancake will attract quite the gathering. So much so that they have a signpost asking customers to kindly keep to the sides of the footpath as not to block all other pedestrian traffic (which definitely would happen with the large number of people stopping by for their share of pancakes!). Service is friendly, pleasant and with a smile. Location is extremely convenient too (right across from the Central library) so you can probably make excuses to pass by alllll the time ;) To be clear, this is a takeaway kiosk -- there's no seating available (although plenty of public outdoor benches around). The pancakes are very tasty. Another great thing is that they're so versatile...sweet and savoury options to satisfy any craving (lunch, dinner, a snack, dessert...basically whatever you want it to be). Plus they're open "late" (till 7PM weekdays and 6PM Saturdays - no Sundays for now). read more

Luckily the convenience store next to it gave me cash back when i bought a snickers. The pancake itself is verrryyy oily. But it is sooo flakey and with the hot sauce the savory pancake (we got the chicken cheese) was soooo guud!! to be honest tho, idk if it was 5 bucks worth, but it was pretty good. No 1 Pancake gets 5 stars because I really do not see how they can lose a star in my book! That's the perfect cheap and cheerful, hole in the wall type of place I like to discover when I arrive in a new city. For the cash-deprived traveller that I was when I first arrived in Auckland, No 1 was the perfect option to fill my belly with a tasty and dare I say balanced "meal" without upsetting my wallet. I love their savoury and sweet pancakes equally and I like the fact that there are coloured plates on display to show how big the sweet and savoury pancakes are. The sweet ones are smaller but don't get fooled, they are still quite filling. The chocolate one is so delish I have never had the will to try their red bean one... "One day!" It was my first year in uni when a friend suggested that we go here to grab a quick bite before classes started. To be honest I wasn't all that thrilled, for the price I was paying for a pancake I was more than suspicious. How can one pay $3 and still enjoy themselves? I thought it was all a big fat lie, until I took my first bite. I was in absolute heaven! The pancake was delicious, oozing with flavor and whatever it is they put in their sweet pancakes! The fact that it was a small shop that had about 5 people in it did not bother me at all and the fact that the pancakes despite flavor were made on the same thing did not bother me either. This tiny stall in the CBD really packs a big punch! Traditionally, 'hotteok' as these delicious pancakes are called in Korea are a lot smaller and only sweet. It's really refreshing to see a modern twist to make them bigger and to have so many savoury options all for under $5! They are very organized and efficient considering the size of the stall and the overwhelming popularity. The only thing is that I wish there was a bit more filling which was a bit more flavourful (beyond just drowning in cheese). Also, in Korea the stalls offered free self-serve cuddlefish broth which I miss dearly but will take what morsels of authentic Korea I can get! read more

This place was closed for a long long holiday (like 4 weeks!?), but they finally re-opened on my last day in Auckland and I am glad that I was able to catch them before I left town. I had the chicken and cheese pancake in which the meat and cheese are actually infused into the dough of the pancake before cooking. It was warm and delicious and filling.
