You can build up hype about a eatery quite easily these days through social media and such. But to build a reputation of quality requires much more. And when you only sell one item, you better make it the best thing ever to stay around. I have heard about Better burgers through friends, colleagues and everyone was going on about how good the burgers were or how busy it is that they make you wait ages. With much expectation I came over for lunch today. I read all the reviews on yelp about it, some good some really bad. So I wanted to make up my own mind, since they only have essentially one burger on the menu. I chose to order the standard hamburger and a double cheese burger. Forgive me if I have discounted the veggie burger as an option. To me, a good burger has to have a number of qualities. 1. The buns should be toasted slightly, and not soggy. 2. The meat pattie has to be juicy and not dry. 3. Everything should be seasoned properly. And 4. The burger has to have the correct meat to bread ratio. To my surprise. Better burger failed to impress today. I have taken photos for this review. As you can see, the double cheese has the perfect meat to bread ratio while the hamburger with the lonely pattie does not. That's not really a biggie to some. Because they might not be able to finish a double. I do sense that's a marketing play though, since the difference between the two burgers is quite minimal. But what's unforgivable is that my buns were stone cold, and soggy from the tomato and wet lettuce. Don't get me wrong, the patties were hot. It's just the buns were cold, it's such a big contrast in temperature. It made the eating experience unpleasant. And flavour wise, the burger was poorly seasoned, bordering bland. It screamed for more sauce. The Chips were over seasoned. Now, last thing I have to be fair about is that the prices are very reasonable for a burger. $6.50 is not expensive by any means. And I do like the soft buns, they would be much better if they were warm though. Overall, I think I would revisit them in a while to review my review. Clever name: Better Burger. I agree. It's better than McDonalds burgers but it doesn't exceed the gourmet Burger Burger burgers.. (Hahahahahaha) Genuinely that's what Better Burger is... A "healthier", fresher, hyped, well marketed and more thought through version of a normal McDeeeeees burger. I've also read a few of the yelp reviews of this place and it's true, the more simple the dish the harder it is to execute. If you only have 4 or 5 ingredients in there... You better be careful how you prepare each and every one of them (MKR has taught me a lot hahahahaha) However, the buns are delightfully crispy on the outside and super soft and fluffy on the inside. The patty was seasoned, juicy and oily. Tomato and lettuce were fresh. Pickles were pickled. Fries were a tad too salty but nice and crispy with the skin on (plus the machine they make it with is mesmerizing haha I want one!) but that vanilla milkshake, bro.... So thick it felt like my brain was gna explode from the pressure to suck the milkshake out of the straw. I think the milkshake was the most filling part of the meal. So much so that I felt bloated after haha. Is it sad that I find the fries and shake better than the better burger? Hahaha okok I'll stop. Better Burger is what it is; a relatively cheap Burger joint that keeps things simple but does them well. Are their burgers life-changing? No. But they're satisfying and you get to eat them at BCC as opposed to the fluorescent lights of McD's. The menu is short. It's either a cheeseburger, double cheeseburger or vege burger. I went for the regular cheeseburger and it's pretty stock standard - juicy meat patty, lettuce, tomato, mayo. The fries were well salted, perhaps too well salted, but crunchy and tasted somewhat healthy - I think it's because they leave the skin on. The vege burger was also a hit - I had been told it was horrible - but my vegetarian friend loved it. As for the wait, ours was 10mins max. We went at about 7pm on a Thursday so no doubt it's longer in the weekend but they seemed operate like a well-oiled machine so perhaps the kinks mentioned in previous reviews have been ironed out. This is a classic case of I read all the Yelp reviews, I know I probably should't bother but it is so hyped I'm terrified i'd be missing out on the best burger of my life. True story. So I ordered the cheese burger, it took forever. Yes I know Yelp told me so but come on that was over. I was told my burger is coming with the next batch, no clue what that meant but it sounded like everything was being made fresh. The wait seemed particularly exaggerated because BCC next door was having a function and it was loud, I was scared I won't hear my order name and number. I was on the edge of my seat for 15 minutes. So tense I just want a burger. My number came up. Immediately I was disappointed by the size of the fries. The bun was toasted and made by bread and butter folks, so it was nice but too fluffy and light and so was the pattie, lean and clean but too thin. I just felt there was no bite to my burger at all! The fries were nice tasted homemade and mostly not crunchy. I remained hungry. Here you have it, BB is different and clean (4 stars for putting healthy cheap burgers out there) but more fit for a snack rather than the usual reason you would go seek a burger for. If there's one good thing I can say about Better Burger is that they have fantastic marketing. I saw their mouthwatering pictures on Facebook and Instagram and decided to try it out, on the search for the perfect burger. Better Burger is pretty cheap, which is a plus. Burgers alone are $5-6.50 so the price is very enticing and coupled with the picture I had of these burgers in my mind, it seemed too good to be true. However, by the time you add in chips and a drink, your meal doubles in price. There's not much variety in the burgers, just variations of cheeseburgers, which I didn't mind, as I assumed that if you have so few options on your menu, they would be perfection. We came in on a Sunday night at around 8pm and placed our order for two combos, one cheeseburger, and one double cheeseburger. Was craving a milkshake but they were all sold out, which may be a recurring thing for them as they proudly posted on their facebook a while ago that they were all sold out of burgers. I guess it does work as a marketing thing, 'Our burgers and milkshakes are so good that we can't keep up with demand' but after eating there I think its just poor planning. Better burger was about half full, so not overly packed but we were told our order would be 30 minutes. It was a long wait, and burgers weren't exactly flying out of the kitchen, and by the time we got our food we were starving, It wasn't really worth the wait as the burgers are excruciatingly average. Beef patty is dry and under-seasoned, but I guess that's balanced out by their tiny portion of oversalted fries. Way too much salt on the chips, felt so thirsty after. The bun was really nice though, but I've heard that they come from Bread and Butter bakery which is out of this world, so I guess good job on having good taste in bread. The wait is very long, and not enough to justify the quality of the burger, As I mentioned above, the burgers are variations on cheeseburgers, so they really only have one type of meat to cook. Despite this, they seem really inefficient and no one really seems to be rushing. I left pretty disappointed but what did I expect for $5 a burger? It's better than the bare minimum you'd get at fast food restaurants, but not better than a lot of other burger joints. If you're expecting a big fat juicy burger that you will dream about for months, Better Burger is probably not the place to go. Is it wrong that I was totally taken with this place the minute I saw that the ketchup (proper Heinz ketchup I may add) was self serve, free flowing, and no extra cost? SO welcome compared to the usual $2 extra for a little container you get here in NZ. I had hesitated to come here because I'm wary of mushroom burgers. They can go SO wrong - not marinated properly, undercooked, etc. Now, I love mushrooms, but if they aren't done right, you can just forget it. Anywhoo, it was nicely spiced and super yummy! I liked that the feel of the burgers took me back to classic american burgers - no fancy toppings, just lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Sometimes that's all you need, and if done well, it is absolutely satisfying. The fries were really good - I tend to prefer a thicker fry, but I do like when they leave the skins on as they did here, and paired with proper ketchup, I was very pleased. Oh, and I swapped out the soda in my combo for a milkshake - definitely recommend. The good news (in my book) is that it's not a ginormo shake that you can barely finish and leaves you super bloated and ill. This is a reasonable sized portion, and the taste is a bit custardy. You can tell it's pretty good quality ingredients, and it rounded out the classic american burger joint feel. Looking forward to trying the strawberry and vanilla options in the future! I inhaled one, I devoured a second & I was left wishing I had a third. The bun was crunchy on the outside, soft in the centre. The onion, lettuce and house made pickled cucumber, each layer is super fresh & cut against the meat & melted cheese. This is New Zealand's take on in & out burger. Knew I had to come and try their burgers after hearing about this new joint- Got to go for dinner with a friend out of town. Both of us became fast fans. Ordered the Hamburger combo which came with Fries & Tomato sauce. Made the Strawberry milkshake swap for soda for extra $. Took a fair while to come out, which was a bit of a shame (was prepared for this though- based on other reviews! Good to know in advance) but doesn't detract from the tasty burger experience. I ordered the double cheeseburger....it had to be double as i am a big fan of cheese and a single topping would not satisfy my craving. The burger definitely was a lot lot better than a MacDonalds ,or the like( from what i remember from many years ago ).....as i am no more a consumer of " junk food " in such places so probably i am being a bit biased. I'm pretty sure you get the idea, and if you're a fan of In-n-Out Burger or Shake Shack, then it's probably right up your alley. The staff are cute, they seem to be in to their jobs; there's great service... there's just that old BCC problem of it being cold and a bit bloody grim inside. I would rate Better Burger higher if it weren't for my experience there last Saturday. I was out in town with some mates and we got a bite to eat from Better Burger for lunch. We ordered our burgers and were asked if we were 18 or older (one of us was, the rest were 17). We were told that we weren't allowed to sit down and eat at the tables, since we weren't 18. This was annoying enough, but we complied. We waited around for our burgers, but then were told we had to wait outside as we weren't allowed on the premises. So we were forced to wait outside while our burgers were being made. This started to really annoy us, as they didn't give much reasoning as to why. There is a bar next door, but there is no way to access it from Better Burger. What started to annoy us more is that there is a sign that clearly states no alcohol is allowed or to be served on the premises. This meant legally, it should be fine for us to sit down and eat our burgers, instead of being made wait on the street for our food. I have been there several times before hand, and this has never happened to me. After this fiasco I'm not sure I will go back. The food is tasty and well priced. But being treated like this has really put me off. read more

Better Burger is located behind Britomart Train Station, tucked next to Cafe Hanoi. I must say, what attracted me to this place was the great design that seemed very urban and somewhat trendy. The menu was simple - cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, vege burger, mushroom burger, and sides (fries/soda/milkshake) I ordered a large double cheeseburger combo with a vanilla milkshake (for roughly $16) and I was quite surprised when the cashier told me Better Burger was also a bar! I didn't even think of it even when I saw that they were open up to midnight. I ended up having to have my meal takeaway as I am under 18, which was slightly disappointing since I didn't plan on entering the bar part of the premises (which was slightly hidden) anyway. The burgers were okay and were made with good ingredients - it felt slightly healthier, a real "better burger" in comparison to fast food chains like McDonalds. I was disappointed that my burger lacked cheese (I ordered a double cheeseburger) and was not as fulfilling as burgers from Burger Fuel but they compensated well in their vanilla milkshake - super delish even though it was a tad bit too small for my liking. The fries had the skin on (which at first I mistook as bad fries until I looked at my fries closer) I loved that they had unlimited ketchup (was it watts or heinz, I forgot) - a big plus for ketchup lovers like me! I've been meaning to try out Better Burger for a while so that I could compare them to Burger Burger in Ponsonby. I have heard that Better Burger was an improvement and wanted to try it myself. I really enjoy the fact that it's decor/uniforms/menu is a modernised take on an american diner. The menu is simple with only 3-4 options (I was sorted with a double cheeseburger so didn't look much further than there) which is nice. Soda options are limited to Coca-Cola, Sprite or a milkshake. And no sugar free options here unfortunately. The prices are excellent as well. The burger and fries were good. But I was expecting something really tasty. The burger was good - but at the end of the day it was purely a standard cheesburger, cooked well with good ingredients. The fries were good but again nothing special. So I prefer Burger Burger. Sometimes nothing quite does it for ya like a dirty feed, and when it comes to dirty midday feeds in town, better burger isn't a bad option. The britomart joint has a nice shack like feel about it, with an open view to the kitchen and a limited menu offering just the bare essentials; burgers, shakes and fries. Featured below is their cheeseburger, and I also tried their chocolate milkshake. The burger was great, in that grunty right off the grill way, with the cheese being delightfully melty, but the shake was a bit disappointing (just syrup and ice cream). Service was also quite fast, which is always appreciated when you're limited but he constraints of a lunch break. Were told when ordering that there was a 30min wait (OK, a busy new place, we can do that) but ended up waiting just over an hour for one combo and an extra burger!! Yep - an hour! My favourite part was the strawberry shake - delicious. I didn't find anything special about the burgers (we tried the cheeseburger and double-cheeseburger), think a little better than McDs - although we weren't really savouring the moment by the time we finally ate our food!! And although I found the fries good (much better than McDs), again, not worth the wait.
