That's seriously amazing considering the burger is pretty massive. If it wasn't for the fun I had watching my skinny mate trying not to throw up during the challenge, then I would have only given velvet a 4 stars. I was trying to give this place a solid 4 stars but couldn't. The burgers are amazing - I had the Velvet burger & the Stag - both very yummy. We've eaten here 3 times and each visit resulted in something they missed. My issue is the service...I ordered my burger with fries - burger came no fries no sauce . Waited a bit then they came but only after I I went to see why it was taking long. Unacceptable - how do you bring the Nigeria with no fries??? No bueno!! I love burgers. Velvet Burger never disappoints! Enormous burgers for an enormous appetite (you have to use a knife and fork), and really actually very good fries. They use delicious relishes and dressings, and everything is so fresh and perfectly cooked. This is my burger joint of choice when I'm in the city. And hungry. Last time I went, it was a treat to myself after finishing an exam - the staff were super nice to me because I was eating alone and that probably seemed a bit lame... Gave his place a shot recommended by the bartender at "The Fiddler". The only reason it gets 2 stars is cause of the fries and the hot sauce they have in the table. The burger patty was a frozen pre made job which tastes generic and plain. Gotta step it up and use real fresh made patties and make the burger as cooked to order. Every couple of weeks we end up here for a veggie burger. The upside is they do all of their burgers veggie (choice of falafel patty, tofu, or their own veggie burger - don't think I've ever had it, I'm falafel all the way). The downside is that the place seems to always have a smoky grease cloud hanging in the air. It's a shame because as long as they're not playing seriously offensive hip hop, it's got a nice dark, wood floor ambiance thing going on. Seriously, get some better ventilation, stat! I must say, don't miss the fatty chips - they have a 1/2 scoop which is the perfect size for us to share - enough that you don't feel like you missed out but not enough that you're regretting it. Though I always want a couple more!! Toppings are interesting - like a spicy beet root chutney, mangos, pineapple, etc. lots of good combos or optional add ons. There is a bit of an issue with the bun to burger ratio. I wish the bun were a bit smaller.... Seem to have good lunch specials if you're in the area. I've been to both the Auckland and Dunedin locations, and in my mind they were equivalent, so I'll group the reviews here. The only reason I can't give Velvet Burger 5 stars is because I also went to Fergburger when I was in Queenstown, and that was just unbeatable. Had I not been there, I probably would have given Velvet Burger 5 stars. They have a pretty good selection of different meats and flavors on the menu, and their environment is pretty nice too. On top of that, they offer all sorts of deals online if you follow them on Facebook, you can get the codes. Most of these codes were good for if you went with 2 people, because there were buy 1 get 1 free options or other sorts of good discounts, so definitely follow their FB account! I tried probably about half the different burgers on the menu. None of them really stood out much over the others, they were all pretty darn good, from the fish, to the chicken, to the beef, to the lamb. As I had enough Big Macs and shake shacks in NYC. I decided not to have any of these in auckland. Velvet burger was located on yelp because it's closed to my apartment! I m a slowly picker coz the menu is quit different with USA's and my hometown's restaurant.but the staff is so nice and patient to this kinda person like me, I had the mini velvet with extra cheese, which is apparently enough for me, a half fatties with chilly mayo, as well as a beer. The venison burger was fabulous and the fries were just hit my spot! I ll definitely come back when hungry! Coz by now, this is the best burger I had in Auckland, cheers! The waiter comes and puts our burgers down so I start mine right away like there is no tomorrow. It tastes gooood...Love the bacon, the egg drizzling on the back, let's take a bite on the back before it falls...another bite. Let's taste the fries. Mh, these fatty fries and the sour cream are good too. Oh, this is totally saving my day. My boyfriend normally takes his time: checks the burger, the bread, holds it carefully so nothing falls...I have eaten in the meantime 1/4 of mine. Then suddenly my boyfriend takes a bite of his, he opens it, checks the inside: -"Honey, I think your hamburger is actually MY hamburger..."- (...) Well, my Homegrown hamburger was also nice, very different flavor though, but also good. All the ingredients look fresh and the meat is tasty (on both of them, I must say) Good that if you ask for something NOT to be in your hamburger, you won't find it at all. Got to come here finally for dinner, been meaning to for years! Ordered the Squawk Dawg- which is a bit difficult to pronounce. Comes with a beef pattie- mine was done alright with a black charred bottom and then a well done brown opposite side. Comes with fresh salad inside which consists of a big piece of lettuce, with cucumber, tomato and red onion. They have aioli and their Velvet relish spread also. Got the semi-thin sliced kumara chips on the side- which were delicious. Friend ordered the full scoop of skinnies- which was a big bowl of thin-cut fries with sauce. A neat place down Fort Street with a cool laidback interior. Loved the booths along the walls as well as the small and medium sized tables with seats. Quite popular and I'd love to come back to maybe try the Hottie burger which a friend said was actually quite surprisngly, spicy. read more

This was our favourite burger place in Auckland. Their standards have dropped though and the last couple of times, we have left disappointed. The manager that was there when we first started going hasn't been there recently, so not sure whether it's not being run as well, but it's definitely dropped in quality of late. Yummmmmmmmmmmy! As I wandered around Auckland looking for something to eat on my first solo night in town I really didn't want to just get your usual generic take away food (you know the ones). I found Velvet Burger by absolute chance, walked up the stairs and well, loved the burger! The fries were delicious too and free aioli is even sweeter! Go NZ with your cool funky little restaurants. I sat on a table outside waiting for my food I noticed there was a cool little bar next door too, some fairly lights strung between the buildings which was a very hipstery addition (tick!) and if you look up you see the Skytower - cool for someone from out of town... don't laugh at me guys ;-) Recommendation - Go the spicy burger - it was delicious. This place specialises in large, gourmet burgers. Beef, chicken, lamb and vegetarian flavours are available. Last time I went here, I thoroughly enjoyed my "Homegrown" lamb burger which had amazing beetroot chutney in it. My side of wedges were also up there as far as wedges go (we decided this was something to do with the perfect mix of salty and crispy). My first taste of Velvet Burger was down in Dunedin, and when I heard they'd opened one on Fort St, I basically jumped for joy! Their NZ made gourmet burgers are great prices, and the sizes range from mini to huge burger meals that will have you rolling out the door by the end! They have fascinating names, like The Velvet Lady, Squawk Dog, Hottie and Animal Rights (Vegetarian), catering to many different taste buds. Rather than just straight-cut fries and wedges, they have other options, like 'fatties or skinnies', and even Kumara wedges. So yum! We decided before we did any damage we would need to line our stomaches first and as we were walking from the car park I saw Velvet Burger. Mmmmmmm, Velvet Burger *Drooling like Homer Simpson*. This has to be my favourite burger joint in the city. Big juicy burgers that always go down a treat. These guys do a venison burger too, which I can never pass up. This place is not as expensive as you might think, and you can get a combo burger meal for a decent price. They sell booze here too! When I think back to 6 months traveling around New Zealand, it is difficult to do so without thinking back to the delicious velvet burger that would fuel my hunger after days on a tramp or after hours of country-side driving. I went here based on the stellar reviews. It is definitely a cool burger spot. It's located along a corridor of small restaurants and bars and is bustling with energy. I ordered a Velvet Lady chicken sandwich and fries... and it was good - just not spectacular. I was a bit annoyed by the size of the bun. It was humongous! I was a disappointed to open the sandwich and see a piece of chicken only half the size of the bun. I wouldn't discourage anyone from here, just don't expect a to write home to your mum if you order a chicken sandwich. Perhaps ordering a hamburger might be in order. read more

Ordered a Homegrown buger and for $10.90 got a lamb pattie that gave me the burps all night, in a very fresh bun with lettuce and a mint mayo that was pointless and added to the blandness of it all.
