Urbanant Handpull - Cask Ale style, a stronger flavored beer. Eddyline - New Zealand Hefeweizen, crisp and refreshing. They also have it in an apricot wheat ale, interesting. Parrot Dog - Okay. Panhead APA - American Pale Ale, good flavors, medium to light beer. Sawmill Hefeweizen - Good and refreshing. Also the beer of the week. Many specials, see pictures. Food, full bar, and wine are also available. Atmosphere - Super convenient, to the cruise ship, dock, shopping for my wife, etc! Indoor, outdoor seating. Interesting and cool decor throughout. Got really busy as it got later. Of course I was here for a few hours while my wife shopped, lol. Events available. Open 7 days a week from 11am till 10pm or 1am. Service - Bar service. They table service, but by then, I already got my flights. Yes, that was plural. :) Price - $30AUD a flight, $19.60US + tip. Expensive, but for me it was worth it! Great way to end the day. My wife and I were on vacation in Auckland and we decided to take a six mile bus ride up the Embarcadero and about two miles back into our walk, it started to pour on us. I like me some good craft beer and Brew on Quay seemed like a good spot for dinner. I ordered an IPA off their extensive beer menu and a wagyu beef cheeseburger. It came out pretty quick and the service was great. The ambience was very English pub like, I liked it a lot and there was a cricket match playing on the TV. I remembered visiting this place and enjoying myself on my first visit to Auckland, but I felt it had changed so much it deserved an updated review. Brew on Quay is right along the water, just off the brick paths to and from the ferry terminals and nearby many other great pubs and restaurants. The historic building used to be a police station and the various built-in wood walls, windows, and huge desk show how it used to be - the jail cells even serve as their office. The bar is toward the back along the right wall. Since my last visit they added a cozy lounge area at the back and a loft upstairs above. There are many great areas to enjoy with friends and it was busy on my visit. I opted to sit at a small table along the side and enjoyed a flight of new beers; their flight glasses are huge so it's worth the money. The food also looked fantastic but I wasn't hungry during this visit. The bartender was also friendly, with a few check ins to see if I needed anything. The back is also off the Britomart, which is another great area of food, shops, and public transportation. The have a few tables outside as well. If you're a fan of beer, they have an amazing tap list - it's worth a visit! read more

Staff was very nice & friendly and great music was playing with football on the big screens. Something for each of us! I highly recommend them! We were looking for a draft beer and rolled up to try this pub. Nice selection of NZ beers and bar food. Bartender was patient and helpful with food and beers. Husband got the daily special of a pie and a special beer for $30, and I chose a cheeseburger and a draft. So, look at the photo, that's a pie! Also my cheeseburger was a double patty with sauce and veggies and lots of chips. So much food! Nice Irish pub feel with a couple of pleasant and efficient girls. Definitely recommend! read more

Service is atrocious! Had dinner at Brew on Quay in late February. Bartender refused to serve my 25-year-old grandson a beer because he only had his U.S. driver's license and not his passport with him. Drinking age is 18 and there is no way anyone would believe he is 17 or younger. He's been legal for 7 years. Bartender (Shaved head and beard) was clearly angry about something else and took it out on my grandson. Spoiled what had been a great day for us. We sat outside and ordered food on their app. Waitress was extremely rude in spite of the fact that we had tipped generously, in advance. She delivered 3 of our meals and I gently reminded her we had two more coming. She replied: "We only have two hands" in a rude, angry tone. She came back with the rest of the food and slapped it on the table, then left without a word. We never saw her again. Some condiments would have been nice. My advice: Spend your money where they appreciate your business. Owner needs to retrain these fools. read more

This is a little fun pub I hit up before seeing the Foo Fighters. It was filled with rockers and party people. Ended up getting the pie of the day with a side of proper mash. It was incredible. It was veggie Mexican, with deliciously spiced black beans, onions, and cheese. I also got a great pint of a smoked plum sour. A really perfect lunch. The staff were super friendly as was the atmosphere. If I lived in Auckland, I'd probably go here on the regular! read more

This was one of my husband and I's favorite beer stops in Auckland. They had some delightful selections as well as a full bar for those not interested in beer. The inside had a very European pub feel to it, which we enjoyed. The pot pies (which they had a deal for 1 pint and 1 pie) looked amazing- huge and fresh, but unfortunately we didn't have any meals here. Even if you only have time for a quick drink, stop in and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. They even have a table or two outside for a beautiful day. The food was excellent! We stopped in, lured in part by the positive reviews and we were not disappointed. The menu is definitely heavy on comfort food, and if that's what you're in the mood for, Brew will fit the bill. There is also a very extensive beer menu, and pretty thorough set of wine selections. There were also pages of whiskeys. My wife and I each decided on a 'pie'. I got the Porter and Angus Beef, and my wife got the Creamy Truffle Chicken and Corn. They came out surprisingly fast and were piping hot and topped with a delightful, flaky topping that was twice the height of the meat part of the entree, but had a light, puffy consistency that complimented the dish wonderfully. The beef was reminiscent of a flavorful pot roast that has been cooking all day, blending the flavors into the tender beef. The chicken was equally flavorful. The cheddar mashed potatoes were good, but we didn't notice much cheddar, which was fine with the great flavors in the 'main dish' part of the entree. Service was very polite and efficient. I was drawn in by the artwork on the wall; a large outline of New Zealand filled with beer cans. I was further drawn to the bar to order a beer when I saw that they carried Voodoo Doughnuts Rogue Ale from my home city of Portland Oregon. My brother and I had already had a few beers so we settled on sharing an amber ale. We then took it up to the lovely rooftop garden to enjoy. I went here for a few drinks after work one evening and was really impressed with everything about the place. The extensive beer menu was an absolute treat and it was so hard to pick just one to drink. However, I feel like we made the right decision with the Brew's Brew homebrew. A fruity delight that just gave a bit more of a personal touch than you'd find in most other bars around the area. The drinks were fairly expensive, but no more so than I would expect to find in other CBD bars and the staff were really knowledgeable about the beer. The bar itself is really tastefully decorated and has a real upmarket feel about it, as if it wouldn't look out of place around Wall Street selling beer to yuppies in suits after work and the upstairs seating area on the rooftop meant it was the perfect place to enjoy the late afternoon sun. I regret now not eating at Brew. We only had a light bite to eat: Mexican chicken nibbles, which were really tasty and some fries, but I will definitely return for dinner soon as the plates coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. read more

Fun little bar! They have a handful of beer on tap and even more in bottles. Look to the bar top and they have a big folder explaining all the beverages that they have. I opted for the flight of 5-beers (and I let the bartender choose). Be warned, especially you Americans who are used to 2oz flight pours....these flight pours are HUGE. I'm a tiny human and I'm pretty sure the sum total of this flight was 2-3 pints. Food was good! I ordered the chicken & corn pie. It comes out with this ENORMOUS piece of puff pastry on top that was delicious but a little challenging to eat. I'm not complaining though because it was really tasty. It comes with a side of mashed potatoes and peas making it a humongous meal for anyone other than a giant. I'd definitely come back to try some of the other beers they have. read more

Awesome place near the harbor. It has the classic marks of an old building - a ton of small rooms that branch off of the main bar - which make it great for having some private-ish space if you want to come with a group. The seats outside are also nice, weather permitting, and the roof top sounded great but was closed for a private event so I could not scope it out unfortunately. The tap selection is good, the bottle selection is great. I was able to find some delicious local sours that were fairly priced and did not disappoint. My study abroad group came here and got several sampler plates. The food was good. Really enjoyed the strawberry lime hard cider. But hands down my fave thing was raspberry coke, this blows cherry coke out of the water. Unfortunately my American self didn't realize soda refills weren't free and my wallet suffered. Great place to watch a UFC fight. We were here for a big card (232) and it wasn't crowded at all. Even during the last fight. The bar tender was helpful in suggesting beers, and the chicken satay salad was delicious. My husband said the burger was only OK. I wish they had an appetizer sampler for two, the only options are for four or six people. read more

Decided to pop in for a night-cap with my most beloved on a weeknight. It was pretty empty, but other times when I've walked by it has been pretty packed. I get the feeling that it really turns into a sports bar for big games and especially now during the Cricket World Cup (especially with the drop down projector screen). As their name would suggest they do have quite an impressive selection of over 102 beers from throughout NZ and the World. We opted for an American IPA and a handpulled ale. Both were superb and price reflected their 'crafty' nature. On a whim we also decided to order some hot wings. I consider myself a harsh critic of hot wings and thought that the buffalo sauce and blue cheese dressing were pretty spot on, but the wings were a bit over cooked and the meat was dry. However, what was the biggest stand out what the heritage of the building that they have preserved. It used to be the headquarters for the Chelsea Sugar company and then became a wharf police station. I really loved the bathroom and the giant bench seating parallel to the bar! They have blended old infrastructure with the workings of a modern gastropub. The bartenders were attentive but the music was terrible (both Avril Lavigne and 3 Doors Down made a cameo). So for all the pros and cons Brew on Quay earnestly wins 3 stars! read more

This is now my second time to Brew on Quay and I enjoyed it even more the second time. I was there early on a Saturday so it was pretty quiet. After flying in the from US, I chose to stand at the bar and had some good talk with the bartenders, who were all friendly and knew their beer pretty well. The beer selection is good, as is the full bar selection. Wine seems like a decent selection as well, but probably the most lacking of the three simply based on what I saw. But, this is New Zealand - the wine selection is still pretty decent. Prices are fair. WiFi is free. The place, including restrooms, are clean. No idea about the food, but as a bar I enjoy it quite a lot. Great location too. read more

Sidewalk tables let you sit outside and take in the summer sun if you prefer, but watch out for smokers (not that there's anything wrong with that). We happened upon the whole Britomart complex while strolling down Quay Street. This is a great mix use facility with retail, restaurants and bars. This bar did not disappoint with its selection...I dare someone to say they can't find something they enjoy here. My only shock...wait for it...was, after ordering, the bartender said $28 for two pints! After I collected my jaw from the floor, I of course paid the very helpful, sample offering bartender, but I was still amazed. I assume there are no alcoholics in New Zealand...it would take you an entire paycheck to get drunk. Yes, the location is prime, the beer imported...but this was higher than Tokyo prices. The one issue many beer geeks have with Brew on Quay is that it is 80% tap tied to Lion which has historically meant that the range of beers had been boring due to them having to come from the Lion portfolio. Things have improved since Emerson's joined the family though. But wait [BREAKING NEWS] come the 4th July Brew on Quay will be independent, a freehouse. Brew on Quay is one of those hidden gems, perhaps it's because you're not quite sure what it's all about if you're walking past. Once inside, it's got an old-school pub vibe. It is slightly disjointed but somehow still has charm. One of the best kept secrets in downtown Auckland is the rooftop bar! It has a more modern fit out, with cushioned benches and different pods for group gatherings. The beautiful brick walls have gaps for open-air windows to remind you you're in the city but still make you feel like you're far far away! They pride themselves in their wide range of beers and have many unique craft beer options. I came with a group of friends and we shared some snacks. The wedges, buffalo wings and arancini balls were all good portions. The arancini needed more flavour. Seeing some of the main meals go past looked delicious. The staff were awesome! Efficient but left us to it when was appropriate. They have a portable EFTPOS machine so that made table service nice and easy for buying more drinks! They get super busy on a Friday & Saturday night, particular if there's a show on at Vector. Cosy in winter and that rooftop bar is the ideal spot for summer. I went back and forth between two and three stars. The atmosphere and feel is great. Love the different style of seating. The bathroom was also very nice. Can feel cozy and fun at the same time. Came here first with new friends for drinks on a Saturday night. The bar was full from patrons after an All Blacks game. Live band playing great music. Only drank that night and didn't eat. I popped in here again on a Sunday afternoon when I was in the neighborhood. It was raining and I stopped in to get a bite to eat and a drink. I stopped in right after the kitchen had closed for lunch, which was disappointing but they had a snack menu. I ordered potato wedges which were pretty good. The wait staff although were not so great. I know service is not quite what it is in the US, but they seemed annoyed I was there and that they would have to serve me. I was one of two people in the bar when I came in. I asked for help in selecting a beer. The server was not knowledgeable about the beers on tap and what she suggested I try was opposite of what I told her I wanted. I was disappointed in the beer but drank it anyway. I think this place has lots of potential to be great and would give it one more try. I'd like to go for a meal and try one more time. I love the atmosphere, but my second time there made my opinoin of the place a little lower. read more

Stopped in for a brew and some grub, as the typical Canadian that I am; I went for some finger food I could pick away at while I smashed some locally brewed barley sandwiches. I can honestly say those were the absolute best nachos I've ever had. And this is coming from a former thick bellied "try anything once and the good Shit twice" type of guy. Smash a few of their locally brewed ale's on tap and you'll have a buzz sure to bring you back. Cool calm atmosphere with more choices then you can shake a stick at. Stopped for a beer, stayed for lunch. All of the beers currently on tap are from New Zealand, and it was a great place to try some local picks on draft. We stayed long enough that we decided to order lunch. There were a few vegetarian or vegetarian optional dishes, and my husband went with the mushroom soup, which was rich and flavorful and honestly the best of its type either of us have had. I had snapper and chips, and it was fresh and perfectly cooked. Drinks were slightly pricier here than in other parts of town - 11-13 NZD for a beer - but the selection and ambiance made up for it, plus you pay for the location. Beer selections were great and the Snapper fish and chips were outstanding. The snapper was great quality and perfectly deep fried. There's an undercover upstairs bar which is perfect if you're just in for a drink or three (and I believe its available for functions) and I believe there's live music and other entertainment some nights. We liked it so much we went back the next day. Our server, Yvonne, was super friendly and helpful. The Mac & Cheese was the best we've ever had - truffles gave it a rich, meaty taste despite being veg. Other food was good too but the Mac & Cheese was amazing. Good beer as well. Stayed down the street in condo at scene 3 stopped for dinner. No help to find table no waiting list. Just " find any spot". We had fish and chips very good, nice size pieces. My husband had a beer sampler which was great. My husband asked for more tarter sauce for his fish. Waitress finally brought it but charged us $2.00 for it!! Never been charged for a small quarter sized container of tarter sauce. Waiters and waitresses don't give service, but tipping is not normal. Good thing she would not have received one! To be fair food was good and about $20.00 US for fish and chips. Just don't expect service! read more
