What started out as a quest to find the best old-fashioned Carrot-cake for Easter ended up as the biggest disappointment of the year. With over fifty years in the foodservice business I have had the pleasure of serving some of the finest restaurants in the country. That also means tasting some of the finest foods served by these restaurants. My favorite cake ever, was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting made by the Pub Restaurant Group in the Pacific Northwest. They used toasted fresh ground spices, finely grated carrots, crushed pineapple, broken walnuts, brown sugar a little orange zest and oil instead of butter. It was always the most delicious, moist cake with flavor that lasted all night. So this Easter I ordered Carrot Cake from Pennington Cakes, was assured of the quality and ingredients used. Even assured of crushed pineapple for extra moistness. Placing the order I was convinced that the $55.00 was well spent. Well I hate to say the cake was a complete disaster. The cake was a stale fall apart dry crumbly mess with a non-cream cheese sweet gooey frosting. It was not edible. Thank God I made an Apple cake for non cream cheese lovers. It saved the day. When I called to discuss this with the owner, he nastily dismissed me as a second hand complainer with little knowledge compared to his many years in the baking business. Unfortunately, one of the more memorable things that my guests still joke to me about is that I fed them stale wedding cake. Luckily, I only had to take the one bite for a picture, but it was stale. I really don't like to post a negative review of a local business but they have got to know so hopefully, they can turn things around. I ordered a cake for a family's party and unfortunately I was so disappointed at first sight because it didn't really look like the picture I had sent. The drawings looked really amateur. Second of all, the taste was absolutely not good. Nobody at the party liked it. It wasn't bad, but it tasted just like those package cakes you buy at the grocery store. Neither kids nor adults enjoyed it. Probably only 1/10th of the cake was eaten and it will got entirely to the trash. want to share a frustrating experience. This past Saturday morning we stopped by to pick up a cake that we ordered for our son's birthday. I have shopped at this business for years purchasing from them twice a year at a fairly great expense. I did not notice that they were not opened when we drove up but nevertheless, the door was unlocked and the open sign was showing and also, someone was in the front area vacuuming the carpet. I walked in with my 10 year old son and the owner Stephen barked out at me, "we aren't open!" I said, "oh, I didn't notice - the front door was unlocked and I am here to just pick up." He repeated, "We aren't open." Then the second owner walks up and says we will open in about 10 minutes can you wait outside? The item that I was picking up was literally right next to this woman. My son said, "wow daddy, that was rude." Indeed it was incredibly rude and this is why #PenningtonCakes has lost a customer forever. We decided not to "wait outside" and to head over to Sams for some party stuff and then go back and pick up our "prepaid" birthday cake. I walked in and the owner didn't ask my name and proceeded to reach over and hand me my cake. Never said thank you for coming back or sorry that we weren't able to help you immediately. We were there literally 10 minutes before they actually opened. Pennington Cakes has lost a customer for life and we generally spend top dollars for cakes twice a year. We ordered our wedding cake from Pennington's. My wife searched their catalog until she found the perfect cake, and we ordered it. On our wedding day, they delivered the cake about 30 minutes before the ceremony - and it was the wrong cake! There were two cakes on the page in the catalog and they had made the wrong one. To make it worse, it was basket weave (she hates basket weave) and it had raspberry jelly in it (I hate raspberry). After the honeymoon, we called them and told them of their error. They refused to refund any of our money, saying "well you ate it!" What the heck were we supposed to do - not have a wedding cake?!?!? After *much* arguing we finally got a 20% refund. Penningtons made a lovely basic buttercream cake for my daughters baptism. I only gave them 2 days notice and did everything over the phone. They produced a lovely round cake with pink writing and decorative icing in the shape of a cross. There was even decorative iced flowers on the sides. I loved that they were able to provide a recommendation with absolutely minimal direction from myself - they suggested what to write and decor because I was so busy on the run up to the baptism that I had no time to research cakes. The flavoring was much better than the sugary-flavorless cakes from the grocery store. I will definitely use these guys in the future, I will try to upload a photo of my daughters cake. There professionalism is is at a 0! I have used them multiple times and they have NEVER not once been on time. Even when I go and pick up the cakes they are still late. I was attending a wedding recently we started at 6:30PM they were scheduled for a drop off at 4:30PM they didn't show up till 6:15PM. They are rude when its there fault they are late and they don't even apologize or think something is wrong when they are late. Would give a zero if I could. So let's start at the beginning. Two phone calls, left messages. No returned calls so sent an email asking why no one would get back to me. Email returned, informed by Steve that I must have been calling the wrong number. Talk with a women who takes my order, I'm told what the latest date I can pick it up at and give her a cc to start the cake but inform her I will pay with a different card when I pick up, please do not charge the card given unless necessary. Second (2nd) phone call, made changes to cake flavor, cake decorations, and asked if there was any way I could pick up on Friday with another cake our family was having done and it was "absolutely" no problem. Third conversation was to let them know the cake topper and lights would be brought to them. Email sent with rough drawing of how we wanted the cake done. Items dropped off, brother in law verified again that both cakes would be picked up Friday. "Yes we will have both ready Friday". So now a week or two go by and on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving I receive a call from Steve telling me they have a cake that hasn't been picked up. I'm a little confused as I tell him this cake is for Friday. We go round and round, and in the conversation of telling me I'm obviously confused he then informs me that his "girls" would never make that kind of mistake. So in actuality he called me a liar, which I did not appreciate in the least. Fast forward to Friday. We go to pick up both cakes. I walk in and am told mine was paid for, thinking oh he comped mine after all of the confusion and problems. Oh no they charged the card I asked them not too. We get the cake home for a bday surprise and the cake was an utter disappointment. It not only was 4 days old and had dried out it was so sweet nobody wanted to eat it. And then they only made a partial change to the cake rather than making the changes requested. Never have I been so disappointed and so frustrated with a bakery. Steve was hateful and extremely condescending. And then I find out his "girls" that can do no wrong, happens to be his wife. Sad way to run a business Steve. Well...I hate to do this...the owner is nice...but.... Just don't use them for your wedding day. That day is too important. The groom's cake was hideous (it looked completely different than the pictures we provided (like a kid's birthday cake) and it was cracked and pretty much ruined from their drive from the cake shop to our venue). When I went to speak with them regarding the cake 2 weeks after the wedding, they blamed the appearance on the rocky road they had to drive down, not having time to fix it before the wedding, and said "well it didn't help that members of your wedding party were standing over our shoulders taking pictures while we were trying to fix it." That just blows my mind. When I asked for a portion of the price to be reimbursed, they said they would rather just make me another groom's cake instead?? People kept asking what the cake was supposed to be, and it has become a running joke with all of our married friends STILL. Didn't get past the first phone call. I have two kids parties coming up and am new to the San Marcos area. I called in to inquire about pricing and to see if they could make two customized cakes. The lady that answered the call was quite condescending and rude. I asked if they made custom cakes and her response was "well, yes. We ARE a customized cake shop". Being new to the area, I didn't realize this, just dialed the first business the showed up in my search engine. I inquired about pricing. While I understand that prices will vary, typically a professional business will be able to provide serving size and base price without pulling teeth. Typically, I try to support small business whenever I can. In this case, I would rather go to HEB. If my business is not appreciated, it can easily be taken somewhere else. When I requested to schedule an appointment on a Friday they quickly stated they do not do appointments on Fridays then they changed their mind and scheduled for 10am. They then called back and asked if we could move the appointment because that time was inconvenient for them. We ordered a 2-layer, 8-inch round yellow cake with chocolate filling and chocolate frosting for a family dinner for my son's first birthday. I contacted them to pay for the rest of my wedding cake after giving a 100 dollar deposit with OVER a month left until the wedding and since I never received their email demanding the rest of the payment with NO attempt to call us despite having our number they got all shi**y and didn't want to do it. This isn't the first review you'll see like this nor i suspect the last, so i know it isn't just me. . It wont take you long in their shop to get that they just don't care about the craft or the customer ONLY how much they can get from you and how fast. You've been warned. We spoke with Steve and ordered a gluten free chocolate cake for our 4 year anniversary. Picked it up today and it was a white vanilla cake. Our main concern was that it wasn't gluten-free since one of us has celiac. When I called the store, Steve (presumably the manager and/or owner) said WE were the ones that made the mistake and didn't want to assist us in any way. Immediately put the blame on us even though my girlfriend and I were both present on the call to verify everything was said correctly when we placed the order. It was very clearly their fault. When I told him I wanted to be compensated somehow he said no. I told him fine but that I was going to leave a bad review. He said "okay you can threaten me" and then proceeded to offer me a $15 refund for my $38 cake. I told him I wanted a full refund and he finally caved but said I had to drive back to San Marcos to return it to the store. I just threw it away. Honestly, we aren't even worried about the money. More upset that this place has horrible customer service, especially for a mistake they made. Not even sure if we can trust this is gluten free. Good luck to you. read more

DO NOT USE THEM FOR YOUR WEDDING! My sister ordered a cake from them for her wedding. She asked for pastel colors with fondant stripes and circles. She even brought is pictures from Pintest so they would have an understanding of what she wanted. When the cake showed up LATE it actual showed up only 20 min before the wedding started and thankfully our aunt was able to stay at the venue to wait for it. It showed up with primary colors and looked like a clowns cake made for a circus. I guess they cant follow a simple picture. We also ordered a cake from then for my fathers 60th birthday they said it would be ready for pick up at 12 we show up at 12 they tell us they need 30 more min, we go away and then come back 30 min later it is still not done and then they ask us to come back in an hour. That's when I learned that people order their wedding cakes months and months in advance and that they go in for consultations to make informed decisions. Three weeks before my wedding, I had no time left to drive to San Marcos for a consultation, but Mr. Stephen made the time to have my consultation over the phone. I emailed him a Pinterest picture of the wedding cake I wanted, I mailed him actual ribbons matching my wedding theme and ...voila! I had exactly the cake I wanted arrive punctually on the day of my wedding. To top it off, they had the best prices I could find in the San Marcos area. Clearly, they know what they're doing. I have used Pennington's cakes for my daughter's birthday for a couple of years now, and they are amazing. I'm not a big cake eater, and am typically hard to please when it comes to cake, but when I get it from Pennington's, none of it goes to waste! It is moist and has a signature flavor that makes all my guests ask where I get my cake from. I have gone with marble cake the past 2 times, but now I'm interested in trying the other flavors because I've has such good experience with them. I ordered an edible image cake this last weekend, and initially my daughter's name was spelled wrong, so i brought the cake back, and picked it up from them after hours, and you couldn't tell that there was ever a mistake at all. The only thing I would suggest is offering compensation to customers whose orders were not initially correct, because it's a hassle to come back and get it fixed. I will definitely still purchase my cakes here because the quality of the cake! It's a bit more costly, but worth the extra money to me because it's leaps and bounds better than HEB cake. read more

But the day of the wedding they delivered the cakes to the venue and that's why the bad review. The venue wanted to take the cakes and put them in their refrigerators until closer to the reception but were refused. Instead they set up the cakes on the table and let them get rained on which ruined the wedding cake. All the icing roses slid down the front so we had to turn the cake around to hide the mess. The cakes didn't taste near as good as the samples did and we were very unhappy. We spent a lot of money on cakes that were no where near worth the money we spent. I recently ordered what I thought was going to be an awesome, special cake for my husband's birthday. When I placed the order, I gave my ideas and was assured with confidence that they would make it look great. Creativity was totally in their hands and I did mistakenly assume that for $90, I'd get something awesome. When I picked it up, it was the plainest white fondant cake with a few fondant decals that just stuck around the cake, hanging off, and not glued with the curvature of the cake. Our dog recently passed away, and I asked for a few pink paw prints on the cake....this sweet suggestion, was done soooo lazily and could only be recognized as bear prints, NOT dog prints in any way. Needless to say, I peeled those off. Right after picking up the cake, I dropped it off to a friend (who was bringing the cake to the surprise dinner) to try and fix it up myself with $2 frosting from HEB just to find that 2 of the fondant decals were already sliding down. Needless to say, the day was too busy for me to go back to the bakery and allow them to make any amends. The cake sat there for a large group of friends for his surprise bday dinner that was 2 months in the making and it was soooooo embarrassing! In all fairness, it did taste good though! read more

I went in last week to order two cakes, one for my cousin's birthday and one for my graduation. The guy, I'm guessing the owner, said that they were all booked up, but he suggested other places I could order cakes and then he offered to make two batches of cupcakes instead. Of course I took him up on the cupcakes because Pennington makes the best cake I have ever tasted! I placed an order of marble cupcakes with chocolate buttercream for the birthday cupcakes and an order of chocolate cupcakes with chocolate buttercream for my graduation cupcakes. This place is reasonably priced, $50 for two dozen cupcakes, compared to another place I have gone before where a dozen cupcakes cost $42 and were not as good. So, my graduation and my cousin's birthday were on Saturday and I scheduled to pick them up that day. I get out of my graduation and proceed to take pictures and do the usual graduation day chaos. I look at my phone and Pennington had called me to tell me that they were closed, but that they would wait for me to pick up my order. That was really sweet of them to be so understanding of my situation and to wait for me to pick up my order after hours! I battled the post-graduation traffic and picked up my order. The guy congratulated me and was not at all upset that I was late. He was completely understanding (seriously awesome service). Everyone that tried the cupcakes said that they were the best cupcakes that they had ever had. Both cupcakes were very moist and the icing is perfect, not overly sweet. My grandma even said that the next time I come visit her I better bring another dozen of the marble with chocolate buttercream. Honestly, in my personal opinion, I am in love with this place. Amazing service and the best cake I've ever had. Thanks so much Pennington for waiting for me to come get my order and for making delicious cupcakes!!!
