This past weekend was my first time renting a tux. I used Yelp to find this place, and it could not have been more of a positive experience! I walked into the store on March 27th and the fine lady was so kind. She was able to spend time with me that day, determine what I needed, had me try on some different clothing, measured me and even did some alterations immediately. I prepaid for the rental which was about $125.00 for a weekend rental. I have never rented a tux before; however, reportedly this is very reasonable! I picked up my tux on 03/30/2017 and she explained everything to me in detail and make sure I knew the proper way to wear each part of the tuxedo. I used the tux on Saturday, April 1 for a proposal and it looked stunning. I returned the tux on Monday, April 3rd and I would definitely recommend this shop for anyone looking for a tux rental. read more

Mercedes is a real professional at what she does and is incredibly friendly and accommodating at the same time. For the most part, she just looks at you and grabs a size that looks just right. No measurements needed. Tho she is efficient, she also takes her time to make sure it's a proper good fit. I brought my best man in for a fitting and the first tux already looked good to us the first fit but she insisted he try on a few more just to be sure. I had a pretty usual wedding schedule in nor-cal and made a mistake when I sent the the tux back with my best man but she was very accommodating and worked with my schedule. Not to mention all her stuff is VERY comfortable! I probably won't need a tux for a while but if anyone asks, this is definitely the place to go. read more

What fantastic service!! I came into LA for a wedding and rented a suit back home on the east coast, and when my original suit showed up it was the wrong size and the wrong color. In a panic I looked up places on Yelp in Pasadena and this came up. I called and spoke with Tony about my size, color and how quickly I would need it and he said no problem. We were in desperate need of a last minute tuxedo for my son's girlfriend's prom. The place we were going to rent from originally, was super flakey about getting him in for a fitting and had been putting us off for a couple of weeks. I had enough! That's when I searched Yelp and found Mercedes at Penquin Tuxedo. She had us come in that same day, only 6 days away from the event. Our tux was ready only 2 days later for a final fitting, and he went home with a tux even more amazing than it looked in the photo we chose it from. The prices were incredibly reasonable compared to other places that told us it would be more money since it was a last minute rental. I highly recommend coming here before driving yourself crazy looking for a better deal. You won't find one, unless you want a cheap polyester tux for your special occasion. This has been a disappointment overall. Here's why: Mercedes, the store owner, is a nice lady. Great attitude. She'll make clear that she will do her best to make you happy. Got it. She'll measure/fit you within 10-15 minutes. Great. She doesn't have the best selection in the world, but the suit I was looking for just happened to be in her store. Awesome. Picked out a tie, was told that everything is in the package. Cool. A few weeks later, got my groomsmen fitted in less than 20 minutes. Nice. This is where it got bad: Picked up the tuxedos, opened them up to find that the tie colors were swapped (only my tie was supposed to be a certain color, but the groomsmen had that color and I had their assigned color). Called Mercedes and she told me that she followed the order. Told her she was wrong. She attempted to correct it, and said she got it. BUT.. SHE WANTED ME TO PICK IT UP AGAIN THE NIGHT BEFORE because it was out of HER way. No. Had to talk with her for a while until I finally convinced her to deliver it. I was in Long Beach. She was in Pasadena. No. Seemed like she wasn't having it, either. She patched me to some guy who seemed annoyed and told me that they were going to deliver it. I told them to deliver by 2pm to my wedding coordinator. What happens? We get it at 10AM and they didn't even give it to the right person! They gave to the front desk person who has no idea what to do with them!! It just so happens that my coordinator got there a little earlier and confirmed with me... that... IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I GOT THE FIRST TIME!!! IT WAS STILL THE WRONG ORDER!!! I called Mercedes and she tried to blame it on me for getting it wrong. I wasn't having it. I'm about to get married in a couple hours at that time. She said she'll fix it, but that someone would have to drive ALL THE WAY UP TO PASADENA TO PICK IT UP. Let me get one thing straight: if a store messes up your order, they are obliged to fix it. Traveling is something they must feel the need to make up for. By this point the wedding party was very disappointed and we just went with what we had. My bride's friend actually drove to pick them up, only to end up attending the wedding after it had begun. I did not want to talk about this on the day of my wedding, but I did. This was terrible. And yes, you see all these ratings, and I don't doubt that she did a good job. She just didn't do a good job with me. Beware of getting your suits for your big day... from her. End of story. read more

Called and Mercedes said she could do same day no problem. Showed up at noon and she had me out the door within 20-30 minutes looking like a million bucks!! I came here for the first time after all these reviews and to my experiences came pride and joy! The owner Mercedes was beyond helpful and gave her best opinions and informative advice about the differences between the tux fit and thus tried them on individually to see how i liked each one. She then assisted me with the pants, vest and tie, which really fit in with my partner's dress. The procedures worked out very smoothly and the service was not only friendly, but giving precise opinions helped a lot! The first thing I noticed upon arriving at Penguin Formal Wear is that the shop seemed rundown and threadbare. Strike 1. (It's also not in that great of a neighborhood so some people may want to think twice about coming here by themselves, especially after dark). After being fitted for my tux, when I came back a few days later as scheduled, nothing was ready so I had to wait while everything was gathered up. Strike 2. Aside from the lack of selection the tux itself seemed fine, but the shoes provided were badly scuffed. Strike 3. I had to ask for un-scuffed shoes, which I finally received after some more waiting. Three strikes, but now I had my tux, so hey, nothing else could go wrong... right? Wrong. On the night of the black-tie event, while walking and socializing in the hotel lobby, the entire sole of one shoe FELL OFF. Strike 1. Mortified, I waded back through the crowd of formally attired socializers, picked up the rubber sole, turned around, and tried to walk myself out of the situation. I failed in this attempt after a few more steps when THE OTHER SOLE FELL OFF. Strike 2. Now I am basically walking around in a pair of polished bedroom slippers. After getting to my table I could feel the shoes literally hanging together by a thread. The shoes certainly weren't going to hold up to much more use, so I had to cut the night short, thus ruining the event (for me). That should have been Strike 3 (again), but the story doesn't end here. Upon returning the tux (including what was left of the shoes) I politely explained how the shoes fell apart, forcing me to miss most of the event. The owner refused my request for a refund, although he did seem to accept that the shoes just spontaneously fell apart. After arguing with me, he ended up providing a 30% discount in exchange for my ruined evening. Unbelievable. Considering there are nicer, better, more professional establishments within minutes of this one, my advice would be to steer clear of Penguin Formal Wear. read more

Penguin's is great! Driven past it every day for five years without ever giving them a second thought until I needed a tux fast. I went in 4 days before and wasn't charged extra for the short notice unlike at Men's Warehouse. Mercedes the store owner is super sweet and fun, she takes good care to make sure your tux fits right and looks good, and the prices are good. I usually have trouble finding a tux rental for wedding's that's cut to fit my slender body and actually looks like a trendy fit, but she nailed it!
