Tried Pelican Reef for a seafood lunch after reading some good reviews. It's a local spot in Theodore known for its seafood, so we were looking forward to it. The view from the dining room was great against the backdrop of the water. We ordered the shrimp platter and the appetizer combination plate. The appetizer combo only comes fried and included shrimp, clams, fish, and oysters. Everything was cooked well, but the flavors were a bit too similar across the board. The fish had a slightly fishy taste, and the hushpuppies were a bit overcooked. On the bright side, the shrimp was very good--crispy and flavorful. Overall, it may have just been an off day. The restaurant was decent, but with so many seafood options in the area, it's not somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit again

I'm a sucker for a place on the water. Nothing like looking out on a marina! The staff here are definitely on top of things. As many of the other restaurants in the area, this is not fancy. Something I prefer. It's a salty atmosphere with rusty ceiling fans and worn floors. I ordered the seafood basket with a double side of cole slaw. Hubby ordered the fresh grouper with crispy fries. It was delicious! Dog friendly too!

Today my wife & I decided to drive over from Louisiana to see Bellingrath Gardens and Home for the first time. GREAT PLACE TO SEE!!! Afterwards we decided to go to this restaurant for a late lunch. Upon walking in the restaurant, the hostess asked us. Where would we like to sit inside or outside? We decided to sit outside due to the fact of the smell of smoke inside of the restaurant. After we sat down outside for over 10 minutes my wife finally asked a waitress if we could get drinks and get someone to help us because nobody acknowledged us in the 10 minutes of sitting at the table. The blackened shrimp was good, the hush puppies were too mealie and the stuffed crabs need more crab meat in them. Under the appetizers, the crab salad was delicious, but his stuffed jalapeños with the dressing again needs more crab meat. The owner needs to fix his CLEAN filters for the restaurant, that way customers can sit inside and not have to smell smoke from cigarettes while time while eating their lunch......WE WILL NOT BE BACK THIS RESTAURANT!!!!

    Just look at those shrimp!

Living on the gulf means throwing a rock in practically any direction while blindfolded and hitting a local seafood restaurant. But for as many as we have, only a select few are worth frequenting. Pelican Reef is at the top of my list and the ride out is so worth it. We've been going here for years and they have been consistently amazing; each dish is perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, the portions are plentiful, and we enjoy dining out back with the view of the marina. If I have to pick something to criticize, it would be the annoyance of wreaking of cigarette smoke when we go back to our table after popping into the bar to get drinks. But we enjoy the food here so much, we just avoid the bar area and if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke around your food, you may want to do the same. Otherwise, you won't find a nicer seafood meal experience anywhere else.

Enjoyed lunch at this waterfront restaurant arriving by boat. Not a lot of parking spaces for boats, however, we found a spot. We enjoyed the seafood platter which had fish, oysters, shrimp and crab claws along with a couple of delicious hush puppies. Enjoyed a couple of sides- fried okra and sweet potato fries. Lunch can be eaten inside with a water view or in an outdoor screened in porch.

There's nothing negative to even begin to say about this place. The food was cooked fresh and to perfection. The service was unbelievably accommodating, but more so they were very friendly. If you're on your way to Dauphin Island, or just in the Theodore Alabama area. This is a must. We would give them six stars if that was available.

Food was as expected, a notch above the typical fried seafood, fresh and cooked to perfection. Salad and baked potato sides were, well salad and baked potato. Nothing outstanding but no negatives at all. Service was spot on, timely and friendly. Did notice only one refill for tea mentioned on menu, I didn't test that but would have been a little bent if I was charged for excessive refills on tea. It's not much to provide an extra glass particularly when it is priced as the highest profit item on the menu. All in all a nice dinner with the Mrs and leftovers for lunch.

When she finally arrived she announced that she was going to take all of our orders at once even though we were two separate parties. Brought our appetizer and salad and disappeared. Came back quite a while later with the entrees. Instead of removing the used appetizer plates, she said she would leave them in case we wanted more sauce whatever that meant. Food was maybe a 3 out of 10. Only decent item we had was crawfish tails with a mediocre sauce of some kind. Hamburger steak arrived covered by large slices of raw white onions and a little gravy. Fries were obviously cooked in well-used oil. Fried shrimp and oysters in poboy were heavily breaded in cornmeal. Had to flag server down to bring the check in addition to drink refills. Were not offered desert. When she asked if we wanted a to go box for our uneaten food, I said no thank you. Yet she brought a to go box with the check and said pay "up front". Stood at the counter for a good five minutes watching the hostess discuss phones with a customer. Finally, a woman standing next to me said she would check me out and went behind the register. Left our server a 15% which is about half of what we usually tip. We will not return.

We ordered the boudin egg rolls for an appetizer and wow! If you've never tried boudin anything before this is a great start! Apparently, folks drive from all over just to order them. They came with a secret recipe yellowish dipping sauce that had some horseradish and possibly Dijon mustard in it. We loved it and it was a perfect compliment to the egg rolls. For our meals we both ordered po' boy sandwiches. Mine was shrimp, hubs had fish which happened to be snapper. Both came fully loaded with mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles on fresh French sub roll. And crispy fries for $12.99. The seafood was fresh and you could tell that it was. This place is a bit boring on the inside regarding its decor, but the food we ate was delicious. I'd recommend to anyone and hope to stop by again.

I wanted it grilled because I eat low carb. The menu says that for $1.99 extra they will grill your platter, so that's what I ordered. The server said that the cook "will not" grill the seafood platter. If I want grilled I have to get the fish only platter or the shrimp only platter. I asked for a few more minutes to see if there was anything else I wanted. I still wanted the seafood platter so I asked for him to grill what he could and fry the rest, as a compromise. Then I was informed they the cook "will not" split up a platter like that. If I want the platter the ONLY way I can have it is ALL fried. Here's the thing. I "will not" pay $33 for a seafood platter if I can not have ANY of it the way I want it. It's a shame. I've been excited to try this place and it's the third time we've driven out there, and the first time we actually caught them open. I guess I won't be driving there again. Plenty of other seafood places in town are happy to grill oysters and crab claws if that is the way the customer wants them.

The decor is nice and fits the local area well. Now for the negative unfortunately. We were not greeted upon entering. We sat ourselves at a table and after waiting for 15 minutes I went and got menus for the table. After waiting another 10 minutes we were able to flag someone down to get our drink order. We ordered a Bayou Dog meal and the lunch special (chopped steak). We waited another 30 minutes for our food. The "Bayou Dog" was lukewarm at best and was really just not good. It sounded great on the menu but the whole thing was a letdown and I believe the only sauerkraut was the one little piece of cabbage you see in the picture. My dining partner said the chopped steak was in small little pieces. Just weird. We gave up on drink refills or getting our check at the table and went to the counter to pay so we could leave. I have heard good things about breakfast so I will give that a try. The good news is this is a new business and they will hopefully learn a lot and make some improvements as they go along.
