Stopped in just after the busy lunch crowd to give this place a shot. We were greeted right away and seated right after they bussed the table. We ordered the boudin egg rolls for an appetizer and wow! If you've never tried boudin anything before this is a great start! Apparently, folks drive from all over just to order them. They came with a secret recipe yellowish dipping sauce that had some horseradish and possibly Dijon mustard in it. We loved it and it was a perfect compliment to the egg rolls. For our meals we both ordered po' boy sandwiches. Mine was shrimp, hubs had fish which happened to be snapper. Both came fully loaded with mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles on fresh French sub roll. And crispy fries for $12.99. The seafood was fresh and you could tell that it was. This place is a bit boring on the inside regarding its decor, but the food we ate was delicious. The food may be great, but I'll never know because according to our server the chef flat refuses to accommodate dietary needs and wants. i wanted a seafood platter because i like some variety. I wanted it grilled because I eat low carb. The menu says that for $1.99 extra they will grill your platter, so that's what I ordered. The server said that the cook "will not" grill the seafood platter. If I want grilled I have to get the fish only platter or the shrimp only platter. I asked for a few more minutes to see if there was anything else I wanted. I still wanted the seafood platter so I asked for him to grill what he could and fry the rest, as a compromise. Then I was informed they the cook "will not" split up a platter like that. If I want the platter the ONLY way I can have it is ALL fried. Here's the thing. I "will not" pay $33 for a seafood platter if I can not have ANY of it the way I want it. It's a shame. I've been excited to try this place and it's the third time we've driven out there, and the first time we actually caught them open. I guess I won't be driving there again. Plenty of other seafood places in town are happy to grill oysters and crab claws if that is the way the customer wants them. read more

This is the best and freshest seafood in the area. Well worth the drive. They are quite generous in the portions too. The atmosphere is simple and homey. The service staff is friendly and hard working. The only complaint we have is never knowing if they will be open or not. We have driven 45 minutes just to find them closed on a Saturday at lunch. No note on the door explaining why. We went last week after calling several times to make sure they were open, and no one answered the phone. We figured they were closed but my husband said let's just go anyway, and low and behold, they were open! That's the frustrating part. This issue needs to be corrected. We have supported this restaurant since it opened. It had the usual new restaurant issues that we expected but the food was fresh and very good, we wanted to support it and see it grow. We went tonight, four of us, and it wasn't as crowded as it usually is on Tuesday night. Our food came out in shifts, fried shrimp came out first, ten minutes lates came grilled shrimp, twenty minutes passed before out two steamed snow crabs legs arrived. A kitchen manager is badly needed, steamed crab legs take a significant time to eat. I had to box mine up since the others were finished before I barely started. I would have to say that there hasn't been any progress as far as service and experienced staff goes. Our crab legs were served with no utensils to crack the crabs or buckets for shells. Our first visit to Southbound but definitely not our last. First, the decor is nice and the restaurant is clean. The manager was walking the floor making sure everyone was happy. We started with happy hour frozen pina coladas that were excellent. I had the gumbo and grilled oysters. The gumbo was full of seafood in a rich roux. Unlike lesser places, Southside did not overload the bowl with cheap rice. This was definitely more gumbo than rice. The grilled oysters were good. The only thing that wasn't appetizing was the French bread with a ladle of melted butter. Would have been nice if it had been grilled. Hubby got the fried shrimp with fries and a side salad. The salad was just lettuce, cheese, and croutons. The lettuce was very fresh. The shrimp were huge and delicious. Hubby gave the fries a 10 and did the same for the hush puppies (moist inside with corn, crispy outside). Service was good even with a huge party in the back room. Whew, weeee! Every single item we had was full of flavor, if someone says it wasn't, they need to be tuned up (or tested for you know what!!!) Owner came and spoke, don't see that often. They were busy & even the grill cook hand delivered my sons steak making sure it was perfect. Gumbo and Bisque was plentiful and you could tell it wasn't based and added to like all the other "homemade" items at places near. I've held back for 3 visits just to make certain the food was consistent and the folks are wonderful. As a LOCAL, you need to make this your first stop AND last because you'll be dreamin' bout it til you get back!! Nothing compares! read more

I would like for the owners to know my experience. We came to your resturant a couple of months ago and you were closed for vacation. I sent a message back in Dec asking if you Were open and no response. Today I tried to call several times and no one answered. I sent another FB message with no answer. We made the 30 minute drive to stand in line for 30 minutes with no one even taking names for wait list. Looking in the window it appeared like few tables were seated. My husband eventually talked to a server who explained that there were people in the other room for karaoke and the kitchen was behind.. They were probably five or six families waiting to be seated. About seven tables available. We were told they weren't going to see anyone until the kitchen caught up. So we went to the lighthouse where they had many tables and got their food very quickly. I hope for you guys is that y'all can figure the Customer Service out. We would love to see local locally owned companies do well but there's a Customer Service aspect that I hope you guys can acquire. read more

Went based on the Google reviews and they did not fail. I had the fried shrimp, and my husband had the steamed shrimp as our entrees; it was all very delicious. I got the gumbo as an appetizer and it had a dark roux but was very tasty. My husband had the grilled oysters and enjoyed every bite. Nothing was over- or undercooked; the shrimp came straight from the Gulf. The owner came around to check on the tables and asked us how everything was. We told him it was our first visit and that we absolutely enjoyed it. Will DEFINITELY be going back. The cherry on top was that the restaurant and the restrooms were wheelchair friendly. read more

We drove all the way from Spanish Fort to try this place and we will never eat here again, the service was good, but the cook and the way the owner treats his staff according to his help is unbelievable, they definitely don't believe in making their customers happy and I will definitely tell everyone that ask me to never eat here or give them the time of day. read more

So sad this place was a bust since we had heard a couple of good reviews so decided we would give it a try and drive 45 minutes to get there. We waited an hour and half from the time we placed our order until we finally asked how much longer our food would be only to find out our order was never sent in to the kitchen. We would have asked about our food much sooner but nobody was getting food .... We joked they must have run to the docks to get more seafood it was taking so long. The fried pickles and boudin balls we did get as appetizers (thank god) were fairly decent. Our young little waitress was trying but it seemed there was no direction or leadership from management from the time we walked through the door. read more

Updated review after 2nd visit. A lot more people in the restaurant this time but there were a few empty tables so we were seated quickly. I wanted to try the gumbo since some people said it's was "so good" and truly good gumbo is hard to find. It had a LOT of crab meat and all of 2 shrimp. It was so salty and (spicy) hot that a tender-roni wouldn't have been able to eat it. I had the bisque on my first visit and it was way better than the gumbo. We were not told there was a "special", nor did I see it posted anywhere which was too bad because I probably would have gotten that. Oh well. I got the shrimp po-boy. There was a lot of shrimp and they were fat & juicy. There was absolutely zero else on the sandwich. No tomato, no lettuce, no kind of sauce. I even dug to the bottom of the shrimp just to make sure. ZILCH! Strange-- but ok. I wasn't offered any cocktail sauce or tartar sauce. Had to ask for that. I know po-boys sometimes come with crusty bread but my bread was so hard it was inedible (top & bottom). The fries that came with were sprinkled with some sort of ??? brown sugar bourbon tasting spice ??? which I didn't appreciate. That could be an option but not an automatic thing. My husband got the double hamburger which he said was McDonalds quality. They "will only cook the hamburgers well done" the waitress reported. Apparently, from other reviews here the cook is not able to accommodate simple variations in cooking. So very sad and disappointed. I had high hopes for a decent restaurant in this area. I am very upset how we were treated this afternoon. We had a party of 12 and they said it would be awhile for us to be seated, so I asked if we could be divided up. The girl said let me go ask and she came back and told me she could not seat us. This is not very professional of a business. I was shocked. We did take our business some where else. read more

The bayou area is a restaurant desert. There are a few, but most are average, some not so average. We've eaten at Southbound 4 times and each time it was great. The gumbo is good and the shrimp (blackened & fried) are great. Unlike many seafood restaurants, they also have a great burger. My only complaint is they close too early and it's hard to get there after work. read more

Absolutely delicious! My wife and I ordered the seafood combo. Perfectly steamed fresh local shrimp. we swapped the corn and potatoes for a salad and mac and cheese. Salad was simple and very crispy. My eyes popped out when our food was delivered. There were 2 large, I mean LARGE, Snow Crab Clusters. I'm not kidding, the longest leg was 13 inches and round as a roll of nickels! They also were steamed perfectly and were very sweet for crab meat. The service was great. Jena, our server, was totally on top of things. I noticed that the servers were all kind of working as a team. Every server stopped by our table as well as many others, to ask if we needed anything. I loved that they do this here! The place looks a bit rundown outside, but very quaint and comfortable inside. ALSO! if you go there and they have that seafood spices they dust the shrimp and crab legs with, buy some because I've never tasted the combination of spices, ever.
