This thing is a cross between a keg party, the flying dutchman and a spin class. Having spent the night before in San Antonio, I debated whether it was worth the inevitable exhaustion to go straight from 4 hours of sleep to the pubcrawler but obligation won out and I changed in a Valero bathroom and powered through. We sat through Robert's instructions, impatient to get this party started. After all, it was Sunday and noon, we had to start drinking immediately. We battled against the power of inertia, straining our legs to move this 1300 lb vehicle. We pedal powered up and down fifth street, only stopping at a couple of bars (since ya can't drink east of lamar) but whooping and loving the whole scene. If you want to do this pubcrawler, here are a couple of tips: a. take folks that have some physical strength. There are only 5 seats where you don't pedal. b. make sure your group is fun -- willing to sweat and drink and work hard & c. do it late enough in the evening that it's not 125 degrees. You've seen it around town. You've probably honked at the booze-swilling people on-board. You've probably been stuck behind one and wanted to scream because it was only going 10 mph. If if looks like fun... it is... for the most part. If you have a large group, I think it's worth it (we were there for a Bachelorette party + another small party) and everyone had a good time. You can drink on the pubcrawler, but only west of Lamar. The rest of the time you'll have to buy drinks at the bars you stop at. I guess it's not a huge problem, but if you ordered a keg for the pubcrawler, I don't think you'll be getting through that sucker due to the zoned drinking areas + cycling at the same time. You get to pick which bars you want to stop at (but they do have a list they usually go to). While cycling by your lonesome might be easy in the Downtown corridor - it's a hefty load when you add up the crawler and all the people onboard. The people running the tours are super nice and helpful. Will I rent this thing again? 50/50 chance. read more

Exercise, drink, and discover Austin all at the same time! Be ready to huff and puff and pedal your way from one place to the next on a 15 seat bike. This is definitely a work out, but yet so fun, and you earn the drink and air conditioned bar at the each stop. The Pub Crawler is stored in a storage facility, so if you arrive a bit early you most likely will find some parking along the side road on the other side of the storage facility fence. Some friends of mine went on the early morning Saturday tour and because of the time only several bars were open. We stopped at 2 places throughout the journey, and were able to spend a good 40 minutes at least at each place. We went first to the Third Base Sports bar, as it was game day everyone was dressed up in their festive school colors, and then next stopped at Kung Fu, which was perfect on a Saturday late morning, pretty much empty, and you could enjoy all the free skeeball you wanted. Our guide was very professional, capable, with a great sense of humor. Definitely a unique experience that is great fun for out of town guests who aren't afraid of a bit of exercise. A part of me wished we would have had a bit more time to explore and try other spots, but then my legs were screaming no. Afterwards we enjoyed a nice Saturday brunch at Tacos & Tequila across the street, if you tell them you were on the PubCrawler tour you will receive something like a 10% discount (bad memory :)). read more

Looking for a great birthday idea or team building experience? Give the Pub Crawler a try. There were about 15 of us last Saturday for my friends birthday and it was a TOTAL BLAST! You stop at about 4 or 5 bars of your choice along a specified route and you can bring beer on board - just no glass. The theme (and yes, it's best to go with a theme to make everyone dress up) was bright and tight. All of us wore some kind of neon outfit (see my picture attached for this...you'll know which one it is), which was awesome! Our driver was pretty great too. She told us when to pedal and when to coast. Feel free to bring as much beer in coolers as you want on board. They do have a keg tap on board if you choose to bring a pony keg, but I think the coolers full of beer was perfect. They also have an iPod hookup so you can crank your own tunes. I will say, some of the hills are pretty brutal, but it is SO worth it because you are drinking the whole time. My wife and I booked the 2 hour Social Suds tour (where you are paired with other crawlers) and absolutely loved our experience. Unfortunately, our Thursday night crawl was cancelled due to heavy rain, but Jennifer was extremely helpful in rescheduling an impromptu crawl for Friday, July 4th (a great way to kick off July 4th!!) at 11AM. This is actually a super fun experience! We rented one for a bachelor/bachelorette party (~12 people altogether) because the groom really wanted to do this. We initially went along with it because it's his wedding and we wanted to make him happy, but did not think it'd be this much fun! It's actually super fun to go around Austin on the PubCrawler and see cool parts of the city. I was only in the city just for the bachelorette party and wedding and this gave me a really fun chance to check out some really cool bars in the city. I also think that part of the fun is just feeling the nice cool breeze while you go around the city while you're pedaling. I definitely recommend doing this once. You really do have to work on the pedaling together, but it was a super fun experience altogether and they take you to some really cool spots. The only downside is it is pretty expensive which is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. This is a must do on a weekend trip to Austin! You have the option to rent out the entire pubcrawler for yourself, or you can join a tour for just $35 a person. You are welcome to bring canned alcohol, pony kegs or boxed wine on board to drink. I like that it is byob, as it kept the cost low and we got to drink what we wanted (the finest boxed Chardonnay). Five of us joined a "public" tour, and we had an absolute blast. We all landed around noon at the Austin airport, and were on the 2:30pm tour. What a way to kickstart the weekend! We showed up on time to be greeted by our driver, Alexandra who was very friendly. She immediately let us know where we'd be going, how the bike works and that she didn't really care how drunk we got. You'd think a driver in these situations may just roll their eyes at the attendees but she was hilarious and joined in on the fun. We got to go to 2 specific bars, and 2 streets of bars. We never felt rushed, we never got too tired and we certainly had a ton of fun. It was a cool way to get a"tour" of the bar scene in Austin. Saturday. 10:30am. A bike the shape of a rectangle bar is holding up traffic in downtown Austin as 15 people drink from canned beers, while shouting along to the driver's iPod. From onlookers, an even mix of looks of disgust and amusement. Here's the deal - 2 hours. 4 pub stops. Maybe 20 minutes of total riding. No, the bars where you stop aren't particularly memorable. Yes, the riding (especially the first leg) is a little tougher than you anticipated. (Who knew downtown Austin was that hilly?) But even on a bike with a group of 4 and about 10 others, you can't help but have an incredible time. Just be warned - if you participate in the 10:30am tour like we did, your day will not end well! read more

Yep, there are cheaper and less silly ways of getting drunk with your friends. But the PubCrawler offers a really fun alternative to the standard night out. (Kinda like you use costumes to spice up your romantic life, you can use PubCrawler to add a little variety to your drinking life!) I went on a Hump Day PubCrawl with just one other person I knew and about 8 "youngsters" - I'm approaching 40 so this gang of 20-somethings seemed really young to me. But I was glad to share the evening with them - they were energetic and fun and had cool music. I don't think I read the description of the route on their website very well. We didn't take any drinks on the actual bike-mobile-thingy because we thought we'd be stopping at a bar pretty soon after getting on. But we peddled for about half an hour or so before getting to a bar (went in a big circle) so we were parched by the first bar (not to mention sober, unlike our better prepared co-peddlers). So, definitely take some beers with you on the ride. We had a great time, overall, and would definitely do it again! Maybe next time, though, I'll wear some padded bike underwear - my tush hurts this morning! read more

Let me start off by saying this thing is not for the faint of heart but it is a metric butt ton of fun. The bike (very loose term) weighs 2300 pounds, which is 1.3 tons for you kids that weren't very good at math, so you WILL feel the hills and heavy pedaling is required to get over them. I would recommend having a full team of peddlers. Secondly, due to city ordinances you can only drink West of Lamar (Mopac side) so plan your course accordingly Third, its not cheap, $160.00 an hour Mon-Thurs and $190.00 on Weekends (as of 7.16.13), and you will want to do it for at least 2 hours. They have a solid sound system so be sure to have an iPod or other 3.5 mm compatible music device, storage for purses/bags, and plenty of floor storage for coolers if you do not want to use a keg. I would recommend coolers as kegs tend to get foamy due to the road bumps. Pro Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, and do not keep anything in your back pockets. The Pub Crawler is hard to describe but I'll give it a shot. It's a bike propelled bar for 15 people, made of a half ton of gears and wood (shellacked within an inch of its life) and designed to make you drink and work out until your brain passes out or your legs give in. I tried describing it to my mom beforehand who responded with "I don't know what that is, but it sounds like you should wear a helmet and kneepads"...classic Peg. No protective gear needed (even though you could opt for the well maintained provided helmets) but towards the end, after 4 beers, a pickle shot and two mimosas, I was to the point where it might have been a good idea. I'm knocking it down a star only because I could see where this would not be fun for people who are not at all athletically inclined or who have a hard time making the most random situations fun. Also, we went with the 2 hour tour which I think was a little too short. We only made it to two bars and at both bars we were hurrying so we could get back on the crawler. Other than that, I had a blast and would probably do it again if the temperature was right (i.e. not 100 degrees) and I had a group just as great as this last one. read more

This was one of the funnest, most silly things I have ever done! We rented the PubCrawler for a student organization of exchange students, who were understandably pumped to be drunk on a bike in the middle of Austin in the middle of the day. We wanted to maximize our time on the bike, though, so, so w only stopped at one pub; I'm not sure our tour in all fairness can be called a pubcrawl, but it was freaking awesome. There's room for your keg and an iPod jack for music. We convinced ourselves that since we were pedaling, it was basically a workout and a very healthy activity. This occurred in the early afternoon before anyone was drunk -online reservation allowed us to choose a route that was apparently unachievable for the size of our group. They need a better webmaster as the physical address also shows up different on various parts of the site (They are located on the north side of Donn Depot) -Guide/Driver was judgy in her editorializing of us wanting to take pictures in a slightly different angle than she deemed normal/good because we wanted to avoid an anti-mask protester. read more

Pubcrawling on a 15-person bike is a unique must-try experience. Our driver, Robert, was very informative, fun, and accommodating. If you're doing this on a hot day, wear as little clothing as legally possible because you will be sweating like crazy. Bring a cooler, bring alcohol, bring water. It's fun to get tipsy and pedal, but it's not fun to get dehydrated. They also have a keg, but all of the bumpiness would cause a lot of foam. Also bring a good playlist because the driver can hook up your phone to his speakers. Oh, and PEDAL. Shame on you if you don't pedal at least once or try to give it your all, because this really requires teamwork! I did this with a group of friends today and it was a lot of fun. It was also a lot of work. Going up the hills of downtown Austin on a leg-powered bar vehicle is not easy, especially on a 95 degree day. We did the 4-hour tour and stopped at Tiniest Bar in Texas, Ginger Man, Halcyon (Lavaca St. Bar was Closed), Union Park,and Mean Eyed Cat. One fun aspect is that you're basically a celebrity on the Pubcrawler. People in cars were constantly honking and doing things like giving the thumbs up. Individuals on the street or in establishments frequently waved and took pictures. Our driver, Robert, was great and made the experience very painless (except for the pain in our legs). If I did this again I'd probably do a 2 or 3 hour tour and go in the Austin winter, but overall it was a fun experience and a great way to bond with friends. read more

I was impressed with the professionalism displayed by the owner of Pubcrawler of Austin. He was polite, kind and service oriented during the entire experience. Let's face it people, he has a difficult job. He has to make sure a group of intoxicated people can make it from point A to point B without falling off of the crawler and getting themselves killed. I had a great time and would definitely use their services again. I would recommend going for a tour of 2 hours or longer because you need to factor in the time to get to the bars and return to the lot. Make sure everyone on your tour brings their IDs! You can bring some alcohol for during the crawl, but remember once you get east of lamar, you cannot have any open containers because of the laws. Didn't know what to expect as this was my first paddling pub crawl but it was a BLAST! I was a part of a Bachelorette party and every single one of us loved this activity. Our guide, Robert, understands the assignment. He clearly picked up on the vibe of the party and could not have been more hysterical, gracious, and and helpful. As for the ride itself, don't let the idea of paddling intimidate you. Robert and the crew skillfully designed the route so it's mostly flat and you're never going more than 6-8 blocks at a time. If you don't have fun on this bike - the problem is YOU, not the bike. This is a party on wheels. Came to Austin for a bachelorette party and of course had to rent one of these bad boys out. Blasting country music, drinking beers while pedaling (how is that legal??) and bar hopping. Doesn't get much better than that. Really the ONLY complaint is that I wish it lasted longer. Our tour guide even let us pick up random's at the bar to fill up our 4 empty seats. We biked all around town at about one mile-per-hour but it was so much fun!
