My husband and I have loved Pearmund for many years. (Cab franc, merlot, and black ops being our favorites). Pearmund Cellars provides something special. It is rare to find the combination of great wines, amazing staff, and a relaxed environment. If you have not been, go! You will enjoy current releases of their wines with a tasting or even get crazy and look in their library for something a little older. I did this a few years back and came across their 2007 Petit Verdot, it won me over and I have not stopped going back. Pearmund Cellars is a lovely winery. We spent Father's Day playing bocci , drinking wine and eating yummy bbq from the food truck. The staff is friendly, the wines are good, the store is quaint with adorable gift items and the views are pretty with lush green vines and tree canopies. Pearmund Cellars instantly transports you to Sonoma or Napa. The tasting room is divided into the tasting counter on one side and tables and a register on the other; it's not huge, but it's not tiny, either. But what you really want to do here is bring a picnic and buy a bottle of wine. That way you can sit outside and overlook their beautiful vineyard while you sip away the cares of the world. We did a bottle of the viognier, which we all liked from the tasting. They let you re-taste a wine or two so you can be sure, which is nice. Pearmund is dog and people friendly, as all staff we encountered were happy and outgoing. No pretentiousness here. Parking lot and entrance is a bit treacherous; I'd actually not bring my older, four-door sedan there, so I'll need to bribe someone with an SUV when I return. read more

I was there several years ago and the staff were wonderful but your owner was entirely rude; literally screaming at a staff member so that all patrons watched alarmingly. the wine is good, not exceptional. in good conscience, I could not go back after witnessing the abusive behavior of the owner. and yes, I recognize him from his photo. read more

I absolutely adore this winery. Small and family-owned which makes it very friendly and wonderfully cozy, but with absolutely phenomenal wine easily comparable to, in fact even better than, other larger vineyards I've been to. Great selection and every one is delicious. I'm a wine club member and even though I live an hour away, I always look forward to going out there for the wine, the beauty of the property, and the family feel of the staff. Very conflicted on this review, as the wines and ambiance themselves were fantastic, but the overall customer service left a bit to be desired. It is highly ironic because I recall 2+ years ago coming here and finding the staff a bit prickly and disingenuous... And here I am, all "grown up", experiencing the exact same reception. Coincidence? Perhaps. But we all know how much ageism INFURIATES me! I don't care how good your wine is... My tasting associate on this particular visit, Kathleen, seemed like a real sweet lady but I sensed overall that she was not overly excited to be serving me (aforementioned ageism, maybe? Sorry, ya'll, but it's an actual thing when you look like you're 18). Furthermore, the checkout experience when purchasing a bottle to go was also awkward as can be; maybe I picked the wrong day to come (Election Day evening.. Need I say more?) As for the wines, I LOVED almost every single one I tried. Which makes me hesitate to dock them a whole star but like I said.. I just felt so uncomfortable and really felt like I had to FORCE conversation with the tasting room associates with whom I came into contact. I know my friendliness and SUPER outgoing demeanor can be a bit much for some of the more reserved variety of folks but I still deserve the same amount of respect as the affluent (and evidently important) locals who just happened to be at the winery at the same time as myself. Back to the wines. I was super excited to try their new Effingham wine (the Traminette) - this location is opening soon, in fact it may already be open, and is located in or around Nokesville. I liked the whites on the whole better than the reds; HOWEVER, I was obsessed with the 2014 Petit Verdot. A bottle of said poetry in a bottle may or may not have accompanied me home that night. Another red I did find myself enjoying was the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was definitely on the jammy side and would evidently pair well with spicy salami (according to Kathleen - and I would tend to agree). As I stated in my intro, I truly remain conflicted in regards to my feelings towards Pearmund. I was so excited to go here after a particularly stressful day, so it may have been partially my fault that the overall experience was not more impressive. I truly remain a huge fan of their wines; I just hope that on my next visit I might receive a little better and friendlier customer service without a trace of ageism in sight. I can't tell you enough how great this winery is. From the wine, to the people, to the atmosphere it's all around great. I've been to the winery many times over the past 7 years or so and twice for my birthday. This time around I wanted to go to a winery for my birthday and AJ's Tasting Room recommended Pearmund. To my surprise it was the winery I went to years ago for my birthday. I was here this past Sunday with a group of 12 friends and family. It was super easy to reserve the space for my group, even with COVID restrictions. Talking with Beryl and Deb over the phone to iron our all the details was super easy and they were so accommodating. To my surprise, they had a long table set up in the production with nice table cloths and chairs for my group. So professional and nice since it gave my group some privacy. They also gave us many options to split up payment which is nice with a group of our size. The tasting was amazing and my friends and I bought many bottles to enjoy. About halfway through our reservation we decided to go outside and enjoy the weather. Since it was chilly outside, it wasn't crowded so it gave us plenty of room. We enjoyed sipping our wipe and enjoying the views. We had no issues with noise (since we can be a loud talking/laughing bunch) since we had plenty of room to spread out. Love this place and will be back. Also it's so close to home we're thinking of joining their club. read more

The wines here are pretty good. Some of the standout wines are the Ameritage, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Viognier. They also have a Malbec which is uncommon amongst the Virginia vineyards. The vineyards are rather nice as well. I recommend paying them a visit. read more

It pains me to have to write something negative about Pearmund Cellars...but they recently decided that on weekends they would no longer allow any children which is just a non-starter for me. Part of the reason this place was so amazing is that it was so kid-friendly. I know some people who don't believe wineries should be kid-friendly and quite frankly I don't understand that - when I go to a winery I like to taste the wine, maybe have a glass or two, and enjoy the scenery. In my mind it isn't a place for throwing them back -- and if that's what they are going for then I definitely don't want to return. Now that I have a baby myself, there's zero chance I will be returning to Pearmund. We used to be members and were planning to join again but it's unlikely we'd ever make it here during the week nor am I particularly inclined to given this new policy. I also don't think this will be particularly profitable for a business that thrives off families but maybe the 20-somethings from DC will want to drive out here? But I don't see them buying multiple bottles of wine to take home, so...good luck? read more

Upon our second visit to the winery we definitely found the wines to be less appealing than before. The previous time, Pearmund was our last stop so I believe we were a little tipsy. Still a good price for the amount of tastings and we got to experience their vertical tastings. Three wines, each wine was '11, '12 and '13. Then a bonus kicker at the end. Though Pearmund is a little out of the way for us, it is ALWAYS worth the trip. Pearmund is exceptional winery for Virginia; There are few wineries where we like the majority of the wines served. In fact, this trip all were great. The servers always have the time to discuss the wines being served and if it's something not to our liking, the servers don't treat you like a leper! Everyone's palate is different and Pearmund respects this. This trip we did not get food, however there food is usually good. The location is very nice. We are barrel owners here for the last 11 years. This is a fabulous winery with great wines, good selections and a southern Tuscanny feel to the setting. You must try the reds and the unique " black ops" is an annual winner in our books. read more

We used to be barrel owners at Pearmund and loved it. We tried to go recently with kids and their website said we would have to go to the farm store but it was open daily. We arrived to a closed Farm Store and a mumbling employee that told us it was only open on the weekends, contrary to their website. There was no one else at the winery on a Monday and we were prepared to spend quite a bit of $ there to stock up, but it was their loss. This used to be a great place for families- not anymore. Not only are there the wines - whether you're a red, white, rose or even bubbly drinker - the staff are knowledgable and friendly which adds to the experience. Woo! Let me tell youuuu...I was here last Saturday, and I had a blast! First thing we did was ogle the Puerto Rican food cart out front. Got the munchies later on and tried these meat filled empanadas and something that looked like a mini mofongo. Muah! Delicioso! Also it was hot as hellll but if you get there around noon you should be able to get a shady table area. We did the wine tasting first (Shout out to Kelly!), and I was surprised how many of their wines I liked (not a big wino but maybe they changed me?). I recommend the Viognier, Petit Manseng, and their Old Wine Chardonnay. I also want to mention we really bonded with Kelly during our wine tasting. She was so sweet and knowledgeable about the backgrounds of each wine and the property. A Miss Beryl pulled out a map to even show us the origin of the grapes they use that aren't grown on the property. Yes, I brought up Miss Beryl because it reminds me of Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon for all my fellow geeks out there! Once we crushed a few bottles outside (I was with a group chillll), we moved to the nice air-conditioned seating area indoors and got a nice big ole pitcher of red sangria! So refreshing and really hit the spot! Also a plus: there is a beautiful doggo that I'm assuming belongs to the owner. He/She (I was a tad too happy to notice) was inside and super friendly. First things first: wine tasting for a full flight is $10. $10! Comparatively, very inexpensive for the area. I can't say anything negative about my experience. The tasting room was full where most others had been empty for a Sunday. The wines were all smooth and balanced and we enjoyed them all. I think what is quite cool is the Black Ops wine. They support the military community with proceeds, and cannot (and will not) tell you what kind of red it is; they'd have to kill you. Haha, yep. The winemakers got autonomy to create without disclosing the blend, so no one in the tasting room can tell you what it is. Which is kind of cool, even if you set yourself up not to like it. Take the risk, it's worth the purchase and it's a good cause. Also, delicious. Great table red. read more

The quality of the wine is high, and the atmosphere is relaxing: no live music, and not as many children and dogs as at other wineries, although there is a dog allowed in the tasting room :( Only four stars because it's on the expensive side, and there is no free ice water. I had not been back to Pearmund Cellars in a few years and decided it was time to pay it a second visit. We went for a tasting on a Sunday afternoon. They were busy but not as crowded as other wineries in the area. We found a spot at the bar and proceeded with our tasting. Our tasting included 11 wines (four white, six red, and a bonus red wine). I was pleasantly surprised by the wines. I enjoyed the reds more than the whites; I usually prefer whites but I really enjoyed their reds. Standouts include their Ameritage, Malbec Reserve, and two wines from Effingham vineyards which they use for their blends. Our wine educator was lovely and knowledgeable about the wines. She made us feel welcome and did not rush us through our tasting. Pearmund also has a friendly wine dog named Tuck who loves belly rubs and greeting the guests. The atmosphere is relaxed and they allow you to bring your own food to the tasting room which is always plus. I am very glad I came back. read more

My wife and I stopped into Pearmund without any planning simply because it was on our way south during a trip through Virginia. What a find. The facility is extremely well cared for and the staff could not be nicer. John and Deb served us during our tasting and engaged us fully in our desire to learn more about their wines and the company's history. We also had an amazing discussing with their wine maker, Brian. These people truly care about the product they produce and it shows in the wine. Their Black Ops is an unforgettable red and their brandy-infused port will impress the pickiest of port snobs. Can't wait to return. What a find! We now expect to stop in any time we're in Virginia, which will now be more often. read more

I am SO tempted to give this place 1 star....Frak it...one star. Lemme explain. We arrived there before my other Yelp-a-rino amigos and decided to start on the wine tasting. On the plus side they had a little play area for kids with toys, puzzles and all sorts of things to keep the monkeys entertained. When we arrived a kid was already playing in this area and the toys were spread out all over the small carpet. We were about 6 feet away from out boys who were happy to play in this little area while we began our wine tasting adventures. As we began tasting the wine, I was disappointed at the flavor of the home brewed vinos and was not surprised when the wine server informed us that only ONE wine was made on premises with the grapes grown on the Pearmund grounds. All of the other wines are made from grapes bought from other growers in different areas. -1 star for that bit of information....grow your own grapes!!!!! As we tasted the various wines, I wasn't impressed with the flavor of the Permund offerings. There was something missing from each wine and every single wine left me wanting "more". -1 for the not-so-impressive Pearmund wines. Once we finished up the wine tasting, we bought a bottle to enjoy there ($25 for a bottle of white wine; Viognier) which seemed quite steep for Virginia wine. Seriously, I can get some AMAZING 5-star Italian, French or even Napa CA wine at Trader Joe's for under $6... Anyway... Once the other Yelpers finished their wine tasting, we decided to head outside, grab a table and enjoy the mountain views while enjoying some cheese, bread and snacks. Before we headed outside I picked up some of the toys in the play area although the toys were already messy before our arrival. We cleaned up as much as we could before our boys ran outside after some of the other Yelp-a-ronis. We sat outside, enjoyed the view and tried as best as we could to sip some wine and engage our friends and Yelpers in some fun conversation in between chasing after our monkeys. Thankfully 2nd Ben helped me chase after one monkey and the rest of the Yelpers were kind enough to let our boys engage in some frisbee and football throwing fun. A few hours later we decided to head home and ran inside to use the loo. As I left the restroom, I notice one Pearmund employee (a lady) giving my boys the most EVIL eye ever. When I reached my wife, she informed me that one of the female employees (the same one giving my boys the nasty look) had lectured her about how we "inconvenienced" her by leaving a mess of the toys in the kid's play area. She told my wife that it took her almost 30 minutes to clean up the toys that WE left laying around. BULLSHIT!!!! Listen, I hate to be a d*ck but if you're in the service industry it's YOUR JOB to pick up and clean up. We did not create the mess and I'm sorry if we didn't completely pick up all the toys. But how DARE you criticize us...customers with small children for leaving a few toys laying around. -1000 stars!!! With the sub-par wine, nasty looks flashed at my boys and for the lecturing of my wife, my friends and I will NEVER return to Pearmund. We are your customers and if I drop trou, take a sh*t in the middle of your lobby I expect you to clean it up with a smile on your face and then THANK me by saying "Please come again sir". If that makes me a snobby muthaf*cker then yes, I am that... Never EVER insult a customer and never give nasty looks to little innocent toddlers for being children. With your sub-standard wine, bee infested outdoor area and blase vineyard...you better learn to kiss the ass of all your customers if you want repeat business. Just know that I've told my Yelp friends to abandon all ideas of returning here and head to Breaux vineyards for a truly memorable VA wine experience.
