Paytrust, or Pay-Maybe?
Like so many of the other reviewers experience, I've been using Paytrust for ten years or more. It began as a great way to keep up with bills & payments while I travelled to foreign countries around the world six months or more per year.
The customer service began to dwindle substantially during the last few years. I suspect it is directly related to Paytrust being bought by Intuit.
Again as so many others wrote, Paytrust cannot retrieve bills/statements from all my payees, although they are among the largest banks in the USA.
In August of last year (2012) I suddenly stopped receiving bills from Barclay's bank after years of smooth transactions with them. Trying to work out the problem with Paytrust has been an extremely frustrating experience. After ten months (Almost one year!), the problem is unresolved and there is no sign it ever will be.
Paytrust's system does not know how to communicate properly with banks using certain security features to login and retrieve account information. As a result, a couple months ago the same thing happened with Citibank.
And, again, calling Paytrust customer service only resulted in extreme frustration as they insist there is no problem on their end and tells me to keep reentering my id/password/security questions through their system to reestablish the connection.
Paytrust's official position- the customer (me) requested the banks be dropped from electronic bill retrieval, which is untrue.
When errors occur, Paytrust first denies the error, then blames the customer for causing it.
If Paytrust is unable to collect their reasonable ($10.95) monthly payment from the account you've designated as "Primary", they immediately block all usage of their service.
This actions seems reasonable, unless you've been a customer for more than ten years, during which time they've received more than 120 such monthly payments, uninterrupted, never missing one payment.
In any case, no matter what you do, you are "blocked" from use of their system for at least three business days. Even if there was a mistake on their side, they will do nothing except "escalate" the matter to their "research department" to determine what has happened. Afterwards, don't expect a call or email to keep you posted, they have never called me back on any issue they said they would. They may, or may not, send an email that seems to be mostly boilerplate phrases, often unrelated to the specific issue.
During my recent attempt to unblock my service I offered to pay them immediately by Credit Card, or any method of their choosing to unblock my account. They refused to let me pay them, preferring instead to follow their established system, after three business days they will again seek payment from the "primary" checking account.
If there is any problem with that account, YOU CANNOT designate a different account as the primary one. Paytrust does not allow any such changes while your account is blocked. Thus, even if you have numerous accounts from which they could collect the funds, they will not allow you to designate a different one of them for that purpose.
All the above was explained to me by "supervisors". There is little point in dealing with any lower grade customer service rep., it will only prolong the painful experience you are having.
I've had enough of their atrocious customer service and inflexible policies. I'm looking for another electronic bill pay/retrieval service that delivers on their advertised services. Paytrust seems happy to be rid of me.
In their advertising, Paytrust promises the following:
"Eliminates paper bills by automatically collecting, scanning, and emailing you when a paper bill arrives.
Electronic bills arrive directly to your account.
Make life easier
Want to simplify your life?
PayTrust means no more bills stacks, reminder notes, or wasting precious time.
Travel a lot?
Manage your bills anytime, anywhere, on a laptop or mobile device.
It manages your bills so you don't have to
Completely eliminates all paper bills from your life.
Electronic bills arrive directly to your account."
With the above, they should offer some disclaimers such as "sometimes we provide these services, often we do not".
When they do not, don't expect to travel without worrying that you have no reliable way to keep track of your bills. You will have to constantly monitor the bills yourself to be sure you are aware of all payments due.
I believe you should not trust your bill retrieval and record keeping to Paytrust.
Keep the paper bills coming and scan them yourself to Evernote etc, or use some other electronic system, such as those offered by the credit card companies, to retrieve and store your bills.
Paytrust has serious problems implementing their service. Unless they can resolve these problems, I strongly suggest you avoid enrolling in Paytrust which would better be called "Pay-Maybe". read more
