Like so many other disappointed & frustrated customers here, I have been a member of Paytrust since sometime in the 1990s when they first started. Back then, banks and credit unions didn't offer a similar service, and it was a relief to have all of my paper mail for bills go to a clearinghouse where it would be scanned and handled according to my preset instructions. I loved the reporting functionality and the ability to have an electronic archive of my bills and payment history. It was also nice to be able to issue a payment to anyone without having to handle cash or directly mail paper checks.
Well, it's 2017 and most of those services are now offered by other companies who are doing it better and in a more customer-friendly way (such as via mobile apps). My local credit union offers online & mobile bill pay as a free service with my account, so why pay $11/month for Paytrust to do it half as well? Most of my recurring bills can be set to autopay through the biller or through my credit union, so I don't need Paytrust for that either. PayPal and other online/mobile services do a great job for making one-time payments, whether personal or business related. When I recently took the time to review my Paytrust account, it became clear that Paytrust hadn't actually paid any bill for me (other than their own monthly fee) in over 2 years - doh!
The last straw was recently when for some unexplained reason, my monthly autopay to Paytrust for the privilege of their useless service began to fail. I had changed nothing about my EFT/ACH checking account on file, so I can only guess that something at Paytrust changed, and there was inexplicably no way for me to make a payment online. When I called to attempt to make a payment by phone, the customer service staff could not accept a payment for their own bill - what?! I had to remain on the phone for 10+ minutes to finally speak to a supervisor who would provide a direct mailing address through which I could snail mail a paper check or money order.
I also wanted to close my account (obviously), and this they would not do because I refused to confirm my bank account information for them (as if this is the only way to prove my identity?). I was simultaneously logged into my online account and could confirm any other type of information that would satisfy any other financial institution (such as any of my last payment amounts & dates, personal information associated with my account, online user ID and password, etc.) but they still would not accept my cancellation request.
