I followed sign outside. My mistake that I didn't check in first, I'm sure I missed a sign somewhere. HOWEVER, I stood at the pickup center and the guy ignored me. He knew I was there and more than likely has to deal with clueless customers like me all the time. He just kept playing on his phone. Well, tough... it's his job. So I knocked at he stared at me annoyed. After I tried to hand him my license and credit card then he told me I had to check in first. I went to check in and they told me my reservation was cancelled. I called my travel agency and they said it certainly wasn't and that they have problems with Payless all the time. The price to cancel and rebook was more so we decided if we were going to pay more we would go with Enterprise. Also they have a sign that they have a "24 hour kiosk" at garage but the woman inside said it was for after hours. So either the guy outside was being lazy or they need to learn what 24 hour means. read more

Car was fine but the service is lax. left my phone in the car. it took 5 days before they sent it back to me but only after two calls each day at a minimum to find the manager and have him respond. finally overnighted the phone at a cost of $84k. I called the manager when I received the charge and questioned the cost and was told - well I thought you wanted it overnight because you needed it. we will challenge the charge. How was it my fault that that he had to overnight it since it took over 5 days to get to him including after I talked to him and wait days before he actually sent it. Was told by a phone rep that now we will be charged $3.99 a day every day for three weeks even though that was the only toll we drove through - to get out of airport and go north on 376. Your reservation means nothing! I got there Friday midnight. I had reserved a FULL-SIZE car and had received confirmation and even reminder about my reservation. When I got there, they told me they only have TRUCKS!!! Since I wanted to go out of town, given gas prices, renting a truck didn't make sense at all. So, I had to desperately walk to other companies hoping that one of them has a car. Your reservation clearly means nothing to them. I had to pay a much higher price to another rental company to rent there at the airport. If I had not trusted these guys, and had reserved a car with another company well in advance, I could save more than $100. Do yourself a favor and reserve with another company. We came in to pick up our car. Nobody was at the counter even though they were supposed to be open. We went to the garage pick-up area, and the attendant told us we had to get our keys inside. We went back into the airport. We waited for fifteen minutes for someone to show up. This lady told us we should have picked up the keys from the guy in the garage. She sighed and told us the other guy just didn't want to be bothered so she guessed she'd have to do it. We got our car. It was dark in the garage so we didn't notice the condition of the car. When we got to our destination, we looked the car over. IT WAS FILTHY! The seats were gross, and stuff had been spilled between the seats, too. We will never use this company again. I had a very good experience renting from Payless at the Pittsburgh airport. The check in went very fast, with no one in line in front of me and no wait. The reservation agent was not pushy in trying to get me to buy insurance I didn't need. It's a quick walk across the street to pick up the car. I ordered an economy car, but was given a Jeep Cherokee instead at no extra charge. The car was in great shape and was a pleasure to drive. There were no problems returning the car. The return process also went quickly and I had no problem getting to my gate in time. There were no problems with billing, and the price was really good. I paid about $65 for four days on the rental. read more

Be forewarned: these guys will find a way to squeeze $ out of you. Horrible, slow service that took nearly 45 minutes while waiting in a 3 person line in a freezing, dimly lit, and exhaust fume saturated airport garage. When we were finally on our way down the highway, I noticed that the tire pressure light was on for one tire...(takes a while to get acquainted with a new dashboard)...it was only a couple of psi low, so I didn't think much of it, since PayLess had allowed the vehicle to go out with it like this. A month later I get my credit card statement and find a second charge from them...which was MORE than the actual car rental charge. When I called to find out what the extra charges on my account was, they couldn't even tell me exactly what I was being charged for saying that there was "debris in the tire and it had to be replaced", but refused to credit me back the amount. Last year I had the worst experience with Avis! Ater a 3 hour flight it too 2.5 hours to get through the line to pick up my reserved car. Fast forward to this weekend. I reserved through Payless cause I swore to never use Avis again. I got to the counter and there was no wait, a very friendly agent, a nice car with no constant trying to up sell me and was on the way within 10 min. On the way is in the car and driving. The return was just as good. Pulled up. With 2 friendly agents taking care of me to get the car info and receipt. Very friendly people. I rented an economy car. It reeked of cigarette smoke even though I rent smoke-free. I frequently rent cars and more often than not use a debit card. My experience has been that rental companies take an additional authorization for debit cards, which I don't really mind. In the case of Payless, they don't merely authorize. They issue the charge plus a $300 deposit. My rental was estimated at $362. Other companies would have charged that to my debit card then taken an authorization of an additional deposit. Payless charged me for $662 and said I would get a credit for the $300. I was not thrilled at having to wait for a credit to process, but in for a penny in for a pound. On the day I was to return the car, I had to call and extend for four additional days for business. I was charged an additional $225 even though the estimated additional amount was $100 based on $25/day. $887 charged to my account because I used a debit card even though the total for the rental was $462. Exorbitant is the only polite word that comes to mind. I will avoid Payless in the future. read more

We were nervous after reading the many negative reviews, but our experience was relatively painless. We had reserved an economy car but were given a Jeep, which was fine as we were mostly driving locally (like another reviewer mentioned, there were no power door locks or windows, but we didn't find this to be a big deal). The car was given to us in good condition and we weren't charged with anything extra (as far as we know so far). The service desk person wasn't overly friendly, but she got the job done. I flew across the country for a family emergency and booked with Payless because they had the most affordable cars. After renting it, I read these reviews and was pretty nervous considering this was an unplanned trip and I had no extra money to spare. This company was wonderful. I booked for 4 days without really knowing when I would be returning. I called to extend my rental for another 3 days. My extension was handled quickly and I was only charged about $100 more. Then it turned out I didn't need the extension and brought the car back without letting the company know ahead of time. They caused me no trouble, credited my account, and actually refunded me some fees that they didn't need to. I would definitely book again. read more

Booked a month ago a car rental through Orbitz with Payless. Show up to Payless and they do not have the reservation and do not have any cars left. The employee suggested to go to Alamo instead. Didn't call Orbitz. When I called Orbitz they said Payless doesn't have the reservation in their system. If Payless system can't handle third party booking then they should not offer it. read more

On Monday, June 17, The Payless outlet at the Pittsburgh airport sent me on my way with a vehicle that announced a slow leak in one tire two hours down the interstate. On arrival at my destination, I phoned Payless, and a woman offered to have the vehicle towed and repaired. She neglected to tell me I would have to pay for that. I opted to see how the leak progressed. It continued to lose air, and I filled it daily. The day before my return, June 19, at 5.33 pm I spoke to a manager at Payless who mumbled his name, and told me that he didn't have to do anything about my problem because a) I had done a walk around inspection and failed to spot the leak; b) I had declined the "roadside assistance" package, which I guess is an extra gouge to get Payless to act like a responsible rental agency; and c) I had declined the offer of a tow at the end of the first day (from the woman who neglected to tell me I would have to pay for it). When I asked him to repeat his name, he said he wouldn't. The car made it back to the airport on Thursday, June 20, and when I turned it in I reported the leaking tire to the attendant. Holly Wright of the Payless Pittsburgh office and I spoke on June 27. She said that in return for bringing the problem to their attention she was going to bill my credit card $190 to replace the tire. A "piece of metal" had been discovered in the sidewall, which made it beyond repair. Her proof that the metal had not been in the tire when I acquired the vehicle was the fact that no prior customers of that vehicle had reported anything. But why would they if they knew they would get the bill for the tire if they spoke up (as I did)? Holly suggested she was doing me a big favor by waiving some administrative fee, and the loss of rental income during the tire repair. She cheerfully pointed out I could contest the charge to my card, and then threatened to slander my credit rating by sending the matter to a collection agency if I did. Payless at the Pittsburgh Airport is collection of gangsters. Ask yourself if the person that had the vehicle before you would have reported the problem that puts you at risk once you're behind the wheel. read more

We are filing a claim with the Better Business Bureau and calling our lawyer! If you want to know why, read on. We rented a car for two days on a short trip to Pittsburgh. My husband made one trip to IKEA and then barely drove it after that. The car ran fine and there were no problems. He turned it in, they did the inspection and signed off on it, agreeing there were no damages. Over a month later, we get a charge on our credit card for $1600!!! They claim that there was damage to something that holds the windshield wiper fluid system (?) and something with the bumper. They said tried to call my husband's cell phone, but there was no voice message left and no other attempts to contact us, email or otherwise! They just charged our card! They are THIEVES. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM! And if you do, keep an eye on your credit card statement long after you return your car! read more

We just returned our rental car and we had no problems whatsoever. The price (compared to others) was excellent, the price was as quoted, and no especially hard sell for insurance, gas etc. About the same as most. We were quite pleased and would not hesitate to rent from them again. read more

I was upgraded to an SUV, which I appreciated since I have two small children and two large car seats for them, but the Jeep Cherokee that I was given didn't have any power options. I mean, really!!!!, this is the base model that most car dealers don't even bother to stock and you found it ?!? To have two small kids and have to individually lock the doors and the truck with full hands every time and then to have to hand roll windows up and down....are we back in the early 90's? Company defrauded me. You pickup your car in a dark garage, there was some existing damage underneath the door that I could not see. They help check damage when returning a car but not when picking one up. Payless claimed I caused the damage and hit me with a $1,900 bill. Do not do business with this company. read more

DO NOT EVER RENT FROM PAYLESS!!! My son & a friend was to rent a car to drive from Tampa to Pittsburgh. TOTALING $200.00. Payless would not take the friend's credit card. My son had to use his/mine. Payless rented to my son who is an unlicensed driver which is illegal. SUV they reserved was not there. Clerk told them to stop in Charlotte SUV would be waiting for them. It was not. Clerk in Charlotte sent them on their way with no other paperwork. Telling them they were good to return the car in Pittsburgh. The car was returned on time, without damage and gas tank filled. Clerk in Pittsburgh did inspection told my son he would receive his receipt by email, as she had to get paperwork from Charlotte. No receipt came. To my surprise charges for Payless for over $878.00 showed up on my credit card it over a week later. I called Payless Customer Service, they told me they could not tell me they could send me a receipt within the next 3 to 24 hours. The receipt arrived within 2 hours with charges for a one way fee of $500 plus other outrageous fees. I read the contract and brocures nothing about a 1 way fee. I googled Payless and saw all of the articles, news reports and pending lawsuits re: their deceptive practices. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! read more

Checked in at Boston Logan @ 6PM on a Friday evening-only 1 person at the desk and 6 people in line. Everyone was very upset and the only agent on duty was neither apologetic or had zero empathy with the customers who were clearly upset. I waited 55 mins in line-The car was fine and everything went well thereafter. However it is evident that Pay less does not care about customer service as the lady in front of me started arguing with the desk agent asking why it took so long-He told her that "you can always use the other rental agencies if you want to":which at this stage had nobody waiting in line- "a take it or leave it and see if I care" attitude...wow. I decided to be nice to him when it was my turn as I just wanted to get a care and be gone,again no apology for the almost one hour wait in line very poor service -when I travel on business I use Avis and am a preferred member while a little more expensive that Pay less-their customer service is fantastic and clearly they value their customers read more

We rented a car from them on June 18, 2015. We mistakenly left our Garmin GPS in the car. We called on June 19 and they said they had it there and told us to send a box with return postage. We did that on June 19, meaning they would have received it approximately June 23. We kept watching for the box but it did not come. On June 30 we called back and were told, "we'll get to it." We asked them to please "get to it" due to an upcoming trip. We called again on July 9 and were told it had been mailed July 7 "because of the holidays holding us up." We called again on July 13 and were told, "I know that Barb has been handling it and she comes in at 2." We called that afternoon and left a message for Barb. She did not return our call. We called on July 15 and were told Barb would be in at 6 the next morning. We called again the next morning and were told she isn't in today and will be in tomorrow. Either they have it or they don't - but their customer service is horrible. Yes, it was our mistake. But we followed their instructions and they still have our GPS somewhere. I booked and confirmed a midsize SUV several weeks in advance. On arrival at the airport, no cars or SUVs of any size or type available. They told me a reservation with them is for 'date, time and price only' and offered me a pickup truck. So essentially there is no way to reserve a particular class or type of vehicle with this company, despite what it may seem like on their website or Expedia. All they can promise is a vehicle with wheels and an engine. I declined the pickup truck and went to another agency. Will not bother with Payless again. read more

I have been trying to resolve an issue with the Payless Rental Car Company at the Pittsburgh International Airport. I had a reservation for noon in October. When I arrived there were no cars available. I was sent to Avis where only a few cars were available as well. I accepted one of the very few cars that was available, but the price was much higher than my reservation. When I returned the next day, I stopped by the Payless counter where the agent told me I would be reimbursed the difference within a couple of weeks. I even had the agent put this in writing. I have been trying to get my issue resolved for these three months, but I have been ignored. I have called the agent, assistant manager, manager and district manger, and I have filled out a Payless on-line service ticket, all without a response. Don't bother calling their customer service number or trying to write to an executive. There is not one person who has the authority to resolve customer service issues. read more

When I arrived they only had SUVs available so I took one for the same price I paid in advance. The car worked fine. No hassles. The employee checked over it with me when I returned it. I recently rented a car from Payless for 8 days. I was traveling with my daughter driving from Pittsburg airport to State College, PA for 5 days and then to Morgantown, WV for 3 days then back to Pittsburg. Halfway into my trip from Pittsburgh, I noticed the brakes when applied were reverberating causing the steering to become shaky. I believe I didn't notice the brakes were bad immediately because of the speed and hills associated with my drive. I pulled over and notified Payless and they suggested I could turn around and I inquired on why I couldn't continue and trade out the rental when I got to College Station since I was already 80 miles into a 160 mile trip. They informed me because the "rental" was privately owned there was no Payless rental in State College. I decided to continue all the time concerned about my situation. The person behind the desk suggested that if I didn't feel safe they could send someone with another car the following day to switch out. Needless to say when I called the next day the person answering the phone told me my only option was to drive the car back. She was rude and obnoxious. After the run around, I asked for the manager who admittedly was new but tried to work with me, however no solution. He eventually called his GM at home to figure out a solution. The GM told the Mgr to tell me to take it to a shop. It was a Sunday and my daughter was starting a camp and I felt I shouldn't have to search for a shop to service their faulty car on my vacation. The next day I called and asked for the GM and left my number. He never called be back. In the end of the day, Payless never attempted to make things right. Although I made it back to Pittsburgh it was with no help of the company who rented me the car. I was constantly worried about my daughters safety and mine. I think the worst part of my experience otherthan the constant worry of driving the car, was the unprofessional response by Payless employees and management. Everyone besides the young manager I spoke with provided horrible service. I cant stop telling enough people about the horrible experience of renting from Payless. Takeaways: 1) Don't ever rent from Payless 2) Make sure if you travel away from the rental city, there is a plan if you encounter car trouble 3) Never ever rent from Payless. read more

Be very careful when renting a car at night....we got in late at night and were given a black car in a dark garage....we told the girl we could not see if there was any damages because it was so dark....she said we had to sign anyways if we wanted to take the car......you can guess what happened......when we returned the car we were told that there was damage on the front bumper that had yellow paint.....when I went to look at it, it was even hard to see the scuff in the day light in the garage.....we were blamed for the damage even though we DID NOT hit anything....we only were on the highway and a dirt road to my grandmothers.....my uncle drove us everywhere......be aware when you rent at night or even in the day for that matter....the customer service was not up to par either ... read more

Avoid at all cost. You receive the car in a dark garage and upon return, at least for me, they claimed I cause a tiny nick on a plastic bumper on a car with 10,000+ miles. They charged me over $700 and then submitted me the actual $60 bill from the Ford dealer. After I refused to pay for preexisting "damage", they successfully defrauded GEICO by collecting over $500 for $60 of damage. Shame on them. read more

I rented a car in December, they could not sell me their insurance because I was covered by the credit card company and my auto insurance company. They were busy and when I arrived at the pick up area the attendant said to get in and drive away. When I returned they claimed I damaged the right front wheel. After I left they filled in other damage they "found" including damage to the rear bumper. Three months later they charged my credit card for $1400.00. They sent me "their" repair estimate which showed no repairs to the rear bumper and repairs to the right rear wheel and the front bumper. The scam runs deeper. Payless car rental at Pittsburgh airport did not have the midsized car I reserved, then when I returned the car they gave me the agent refused to call the wheel chair assistance for my aged father while he sat on his suitcase in the cold outdoor parking structure, the agent said he did not have the number. The agent insisted I fill out an "accident report" for a very very tiny nick in the paint which I did not notice during the original walk around. A new agent was just coming on for the next shift and thankfully did call for the wheel chair assistance. We also had a terrible experience with Payless and will be following up with the BBB. My husband accidentally left our personal GPS in the rental car he returned. He called the company and they said that they had our GPS and would send it to us if we mailed a postage-paid self-addressed box. We did so and waited a very reasonable period of time. Nothing. He has called the company dozens of times and they always say that they will call back. We realize that we are never going to see our GPS again, but what really bothers me is that we spent EXTRA money mailing a box that they had no intention of using.
