I want to take a moment to sincerely thank Dr. Payam Vahedifar for the incredible care he provided during one of the most painful times I've experienced. After I slipped and fell on my back, I developed severe back pain, hip pain, pain going down the back of my leg toward my knee, and numbness in my toe. The pain became so intense that there were many nights when I simply couldn't sleep or get comfortable. I eventually had an epidural injection with Dr. Vahedifar, and after a few visits and his continued care, my pain became much more manageable. I'm incredibly grateful for the difference this has made in my everyday life. I became a patient of Dr Vahedifar at the begining of February. Thus far, I have found the reviews on him to be consistent with my experience. Dr. Vehedifar has a nice bedside manner and is a very skilled pain management doctor. When I first went into see him, I was in a great deal of pain. Dr Vahedifar gave me an epidural injection and I felt considerably better. The pain subsided almost immediately. His staff told me that knows just where to place the injections. I think that is probably true, given the extent to which I felt relief. Prior to Dr Vehedifar, I had been to two other pain management doctors. I saw one of them for approximately 5 years. That was my first doctor. While I liked her very much, I found her staff to be less than cogenial. I was a patient of the second doctor for a much shorter period of time, approximately 8 months. I liked his staff alot. But found the second doctor to be unjustifiably arrogant. It is nice to finally be going to a pain management doctor where I like both the doctor and the doctor's staff. Dr. Vahedifar is in my insurance network. The surgery facility he uses is out of network. However, because I am his patient, the surgery facility works with me so that I can be treated by Dr Vahedifar at an affordable rate. The surgery center staff thinks highly of Dr Vahedifar and they will go the extra mile to work with his patients. They also fit me in at the 11th hour so that I could swiftly have my procedure and get out of pain. During a moment of reflection this week, trust came to mind, one of the most important ingredients to any successful relationship. I became painfully aware that there's no one left that I would trust with my life. Those I did trust to that degree have passed. And then I thought of Dr. Vahedifar, who has been taking care of my spine and neck issues since 2012. Under his care, he has inserted needles and ablated nerves in my spine from top to bottom while I lay face down under anesthesia. These procedures have mitigated and often eliminated the pain from years of self-inflicted spinal damage (former athlete), broken bones, arthritis, acquired scoliosis, and spinal degenerative disease. After one of my worst accidents, in which a car hit me on my Harley, the first thing the ER doctor said when I came to was, 'You should be dead, no one survives this kind of accident.' But I did survive but not without permanent damage to my neck, shoulder and spine. It took a year to heal and even 30 years later, I'm still paying the fiddler. Finding Dr. V changed my life forever and for the better. I will never be totally pain free as a result of too many broken bones, too many head-firsts and face plants, too much scar tissue inside and out, too many high falls and hard landings, too many body blows (former stuntwoman), most of which were never intended for a human body to endure. Getting old makes it even worse... like parts of an old car that get rusty. Dr. V has made it possible for me to continue to walk upright, even going for short walks. His surgical skill and knowledge have allowed me to do more and be more than most people my age (70) who are without injuries and spinal damage. He has kept me walker-free. For that, and to him, I am grateful. Because of his medical magic in keeping me mobile today, I can look back at my life of adventure without a single regret. I wouldn't change a thing. After that moment of reflection, it gave me great comfort to realize that there's still someone that I trust 100% with my life. More precious than we realize until it's gone! I've seen dozens of pain management doctors over 30 years in three different states and multiple cities. Dr. V, without exception, is by far the best pain management doctor in Los Angeles. Smart as a whip, kind, easy going, listens to his patients, excellent problem solver. On time! I've remained his patient for 7 years because of his excellent results with my progressive and degenerative spinal issues. He doesn't back down from a challenge. Dr. V will remain my PM doc until death do us part or until he kicks me to the curb, whichever comes first. I was referred to Dr. Vahedifar from my spine surgeon. Kimberly in Dr. Vahedifar's office was so rude and difficult to deal with. Not a very welcoming first impression. There was 22 pages of new patient forms and I had trouble with inserting scanned documents, she was not helpful and extremely rude. I immediately canceled my appointment. Dr. Vahedifar is very unprofessional. He referred me to see Orly Saghian PHD, a psychologist. He told me that this psychologist would teach me some strategies to reduce the pain that I have in my neck, shoulders and back. It turned out that Saghian had never taught me any strategies. All she did was telling me that Dr. Vahedifar is very popular and tried really hard to convince me to get a steroid injection from him in the session. I'd never go back to see Dr. Vahedifar. I was in pain for 45 years. However, last year the pain increased rapidly, and no medication helped. The pain was debilitating. I could not walk even inside my house. When I went to Costco I needed a scooter. My orthopedic doctor recommended Dr. Vahedifar. About two weeks after my epidural, I was able to walk 10,000 steps and two months later up to 16,000 steps /day. I even went hiking. The improved mobility led also to loss of weight. I hope that I will never need another epidural. But I know who to call when needed. Dr. Vahedifar is also doing Tele Medicine. Dr. Payam Vahedifar MD is one of the kindest and most competent doctors I have met. I had a problem with my elbow and I went to Dr. Vahedifar at Nuvo Spine. He was very personable and caring. He took the time to ask me questions so he could do right by me. I'm not in the habit of looking into men's eyes, but I could see he really cared about me as a patient. I wasn't just money to him, I was a patient and he was going to do his best to help me. He gave me a cortizone shot (which didn't hurt) and I currently have no pain in my arm. Everything is good now. My first visit I waited over an hour to see Dr. V. He listened to my medical issues regarding my pain, then walked out, didn't say a word, then one of the med assts came in and handed me a prescription and said,"Dr.V. Will see you in a month." "Wow, that was odd," I thought....Then went back, and the same thing. His office was packed with people, there's a tv in the waiting room(thankfully), otherwise it would be awkward, with so many people waiting for their turn. After a few visits I felt like Dr. V was just drifting off somewhere else, not listening, jumping up, same drill, RX in hand, back in a month. One month my pharmacy misplaced my rx, I called the office and was treated like dirt by "Rahanna." She went out of her way to not help me. She actually hung up on me. I was out of meds, and just asked her to call the pharmacy and verify the refill. Back then they could do that. I called Dr.V, and he also hung up on me! I'm not a nuisance patient, I'm not an addict, but you can't just stop taking these meds cold turkey. You have to wean off after years of pain and pills that are addictive in nature. The pharmacy found the RX, miracle of miracles, and when I went back, Dr. V actually apologized for hanging up on me. Don't they understand it's their job to help people? Why do they resist what's expected and what they're jobs entail?? Their patient's pay their salaries, do your jobs, help people!! Be nice, smile, stop with the dirty looks and disdainful attitudes! I left his practice because I couldn't take the abuse and lack of professionalism. The Dr. Sets the tone, for whatever reason, Rahanna has developed such a lousy chip on her shoulder, and should not be in health care. Compassionate, caring and happy, doesn't describe her, nor Dr V. I have been to other pain management specialists and he is the first one who has not only helped me, but taken the time to specifically discuss and answer questions. Dr Payam has helped save my life. I am 29 years old and have had 28 surgeries and I have one of the rarest bone conditions in the world along with 2 other chronic illnesses. My husband has been going to Dr. Vahedifar since 2010. He went from doctor to doctor because of his pain in his jaw. When he saw the doctor he new right away what was wrong; TMJ. Most doctors don't take TMJ that serious and think its all in your head. As he heard over and over just stop stressing. Turns out that Dr. V has TMJ himself and understood the pain he was going through. He ordered an MRI right away and determined that his TMJ is caused from a disk being out of place in his jaw not stress. Its a big surgery that my husband is not ready to take on so they have worked together to manage the pain. You want a doctor that will listen Dr. Vahedifar is the doctor for you. Dr. Vahedifar is absolutely amazing. I first went to him a year and a half ago when I had a bulging disc. He gave me 2 epidurals that kept me pain free for a year. My bulging disc corrected itself but over a year later I was in excruciating pain with a herniated disc pressing on a nerve. When the epidurals didn't completely take the pain away Dr. Vahedifar was unbelievably helpful in helping me manage the pain until I could have a much needed surgery. I've broken just about every bone possible in my torso from athletics, car and motorcycle accidents, being a stuntwoman, and fighting in black belt tournaments back in the day. You name it... 7 ribs, shoulder, collar bone, shattered scapula, neck cracks, spinal compression, lumbar and thoracic damage, sacroiliac injury, loss of 7 teeth, cracked eye socket, TBI's... I'm a mess but at 66 still standing thanks to Dr. V. Ironic, never an arm or a leg though I did paralyze my right arm for a year after one accident. Got it back though with a lot of PT. Nine lives, indeed. After a 12 year absence from LA, I moved back in 2012. First order of business, find a good pain management doctor, and trust me, it wasn't easy. Finding Dr. V saved my life, literally. By the time I found him, I literally could not walk. I would roll out of bed and land on the floor on all fours and then crawl to the bathroom and kitchen in excruciating pain. The overuse of cortisone injections by former east coast doctors had worn off leaving me with multiple side effects including a 25lb weight gain, facial hair, buffalo hump, and moon face. I was a mess when I found Dr. V. He knew he had a challenge on his hands with so many injuries to deal with. Lesser doctors would have referred me to someone else. Where to begin? With his calm demeanor, he concluded that the first tackle should my lower back so I could stand and walk again. He did Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) at a surgery center, in and out within only a few hours. By the time the procedure was over and I awoke from the anesthesia, I could stand and walk out of there. I felt 20 years younger and so much happier. Chronic pain can be so depressing, so even that was gone. His work and reputation are as good as it gets in his field. From there, over the next few months, he took care of my neck and thoracic injuries. My spinal issues are progressive and degenerative which means a life long relationship with my pain management doctor. It's been 4 years now and Dr. V has kept me standing and walking ever since, and pain free. I'm even able to go for walks again a few times a week. Not running or sprinting anywhere but at 66 with all these spinal issues, now arthritis setting in, I'm just grateful to be standing and walking. And just to let you know how good this guy is, his main office is 35 miles one way from where I live and I don't own a car. He also has another office closer, about 20 miles away. I still don't own a car. But he's that good that I'll either rent a car or take a cab or find a ride to my appointments or treatments as I know I can fully trust that Dr. V will take good care of me and yield great results. As a side note, he has a unique laugh. Every time I'm in the surgery suite getting prepped, I can hear his laugh in the distance when he arrives. It gives me such comfort to hear that each time, and any nerves going on just dissipate, because now I know I'm in good hands. As with any doctor or hospital, it's up to you to understand your insurance coverage and discuss your coverage with your doctor's office billing department before all procedures. Assume nothing. Insurance is complicated and can be tricky so it's vital that you learn and understand what your insurance covers and doesn't cover or you'll end up with a big unexpected surprise in the mail. I have always found Dr. V's scheduler Alicia and their billing department to be very generous and gracious with their time on the phone or in person answering all my questions about each procedure, insurance coverage, scheduling and rescheduling, prescribing medications, signing necessary forms, and providing referrals for other health issues. PS: Because Dr. V did the RFAs instead of continued use of cortisone, I lost the 25 pounds, and all other side effects went away within the first year under his care. I'm back to my fighting weight though at this age the only fight I'm having is with time and gravity. My knees are where my ankles used to be, it's hard to tell anymore where my thighs begin and ass ends, and my boobs cover most of my belly so tube socks have become my new bra. But what the hell, I can stand and walk, and bend over without falling on my face. A lot to be thankful for, thanks to Dr. V. read more

To be very clear up front my poor rating is NOT because of the doctor. He is a good doctor and I have no issues with him. His back office/billing is the problem. I pretty much never write reviews but I feel compelled to do so because of my recent experience. my intention is not to slam them but to just lay out what actually happened so that hopefully nobody else has to go through this. Everything I am laying out here I tried to communicate with them. They made mistakes yet have not been willing to take responsibility for them or even apologize for it. Back in Nov when I was going to have a particular procedure done on one side of my spine i asked up front what this was going to cost me. Alicia, the woman who verifies insurance told me is was going to cost me $27 because my deductible had been met. I reiterated, "$27? Are you sure?" she said, Yes. I've barely been working so this was an affordable price for me so I went ahead and scheduled it. A few weeks later it became clear to me I needed the same procedure on the other side of my spine. Since Alicia already told me it would cost $27 I had no reason to believe doing the exact same thing again would be any different. So I went ahead with the 2nd procedure. Then I got the bill for the 1st procedure. It was nearly 4 times higher than what they said I would have to pay. A 400% increase. So I called their billing person, Michelle, and explained what Alicia had told me. She verified with Alicia so I paid the $27. Then the bill for the 2nd procedure arrived. Same thing. a 400% increase from what i had been told. I sent in $27 with a note explaining that this was what i paid before for the exact same thing. Michelle then called me and told me I had to pay the remainder because my insurance had paid "nothing". Firstly this was not true at all as I could see on the EOB that my insurance DID pay a certain amount, and secondly I explained again what Alicia had told me. I said there has clearly been a miscommunication and that I can only go off of what i am told when I up front ask "what will this cost?" I also explained that I have been barely working and if I had known upfront that this higher amount was what I would owe that I may not have chosen to do this procedure. She said she would check with the Dr. I then received the same bill again with a note saying I needed to pay the remainder. I noticed on this bill that the $27 I HAD paid was NOT credited even though that had already cashed my check. Basically the bill reflected as if I had paid nothing, which was wrong. I then called Alicia to find out why she quoted me $27 if this was not going to be true. She said my insurance did not pay what they had expected them to pay and that was why. I explained that I paid ONLY the $27 for the 1st procedure. Why would the 2nd one be different when the bill was exactly the same? She had no answer and hid behind the legal paperwork I signed stating I agreed to pay my bill. This was not the point at all. My point was, how can you quote a patient one thing, and they are RELYING on that information, but then completely not take responsibility for what you said? Plus, I had paid $27 for the 1st time, why it was now different made no sense! I understand how insurance works, but one never expects a 400% increase! And now this is the kicker...I then called my insurance to try to figure out what might have happened, and why the discrepancy. They explained I had a $100 copay for every procedure billed as "surgery" (I did not have "surgery" I had an injection. How was I to know that an "injection" would be considered "surgery" and a whole other set of costs come into play?...) AND that Alicia had been informed of this when she called to verify my benefits. what?? She KNEW?? They had noted the date of her call. She HAD BEEN TOLD by my insurance yet she completely failed to pass this information on to me. She should have informed me that she made a mistake BEFORE my procedure. But even the day off my 2nd procedure she called me to collect the $30 she said would be my responsibility...How $27 became $30 I have no idea, but I'm not going to fight over $3. The point is that they seem to have no idea what is really going on. Like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I emailed her to let her know about this copay and to ask why she didn't inform me of that. So far no response. btw, I did express to Alicia that there was something "not right" happening. She of course didn't want to hear it. To be clear, I don't think these mistakes were done with malicious intent, but am laying this out just so other may be aware. Check your bill. Don't take what they say at their word. I have never before had this problem. I always pay my bills and my credit score is practically perfect. But how this all transpired makes no sense at all. The worst of it may be that they seem unwilling even take ownership of their mistake and have the decency to apologize for it. read more

Being on a PPO plan, I have my choice of doctors, so my decision to keep using your office/him is based on his good care and compassion. I have had other doctors in pain management and neurosurgery who have essentially blamed me for failed treatments; not bothered to provide information about a scheduled procedure (the pain management office told me to "just Google it"); denied me appropriate pain medication; and overall treated me more like an object than a real person in pain. Not to mention that they didn't think or care enough to provide a referral to someone who could help me when they couldn't (like their opinion is the only one and options end with them). I am especially grateful that Dr. Vahedifar referred me to Dr. Alexandre Rasouli, who performed an artificial disc replacement on me February 1st of this year. Now, 5 months later, I'm getting my life back and doing quite well in a relatively short time (in fact, today is the 10th anniversary of the work accident that caused this nightmare, and I feel much better about it). read more

MY STORY AND HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION OF DR. VAHEDIFAR: Unfortunately, I have had to become a non-doctor expert on the vagaries of low back and neck pain issues ever since the late 1980's (and living back in Boston then before moving here to L.A.) where I I had my first of several low back and neck fusions to come at several levels my neck and spine due to Degenerative (worn out) Disc Disease. I have been astonishingly lucky and blessed to surround myself (and spine!) with some of the best surgeons and Sports Med/Orthopaedic~Physiatrists and walked away good as new each surgery. I never suffered from "I wish I had never done that fusion" mindset in part because Dr. Vahedifar played vital roll in these required surgeries (pre and post surgery). I never had to voice the often-heard regrettable stories people often get with post-back surgeries. Never with me. I have been going to Dr. Vahedifar, who is an extraordinary non-surgeon Sports Med/Orthopaedic~Physiatrist & Pain Management MD for well over a dozen years now for all my spine issues (pre and post surgeries). That amount of time should tell you something. The hallmark of a really true skilled medical practitioner is being a truly skilled diagnostician--able at identifying cause/location of pain so readily and being spot-on 100% of the time. Few doctors have this ability like Dr. V. He knows how /where to sniff a problem and knock it out. Recently, in the waiting room, two patients I overheard were praising in agreement how Dr. Vahedifiar is such an excellent diagnostician. He is the Stephen Hawking of his profession. The guy is very smart and "just knows." You no doubt will find him to be genuine, caring, compassionate, affable and a truly great listener (many doctors aren't...unless they're a Psychiatrist of course) of your issue. Part of Dr. V's practice also is in general Pain Management relief. Extremely knowledgeable here as well, I've sees Dr. V. for non-orthopaedic pain management with a chronic lower G.I. issue I have. After a couple of hospital discharges for this issue with this recurring matter, I went to see him for routine post-hospital Pain Mngt. Among other things, Dr. V gave me a Rx for a transdermal patch that widely is used for high blood pressure. But like many drugs, its used for other things including markedly reducing the well known, dreaded harsh withdrawal effects of a strong pain relief drug I was given for 13 days while at Cedars Sinai. I had gone through these awful withdrawals before and just accepted up until then. Then Dr. V suggested this patch to ward off the withdrawals. Bingo!. It was like a miracle cure!...this patch fended off the awful withdrawal (tapering down) effects I had experienced on numerous occasions before. No one at Cedars Sinai Pain Mgt Dept, with all their big-gun doctors even suggested I might want to use/try this patch to help minimize the terrible tapering down effects from such meds--NOR did they make me aware of its existence ( I did call them out on this...HELLLLLOOO!?!?! They knew about this patch's other use for this but dumbly shrugged off not telling me.). Dr. V. just really help me avoid going through a rough week of withdrawals--all over again! What a find! I rarely ever post on Yelp but if/when I do it is because of an extraordinary positive experience. Take it from someone who has had far more spine surgeries than he has oral filings: You just can't find and do better than Dr. Vahedifar for non-surgery ortho related care and for Pain Management. I have recommended Dr. Vahedifar to others without regrets. His reputation among his peers, other doctors in and around the medical community in Los Angeles is exceeding; and where a wide variety of medical specialists know him or at least know of him and his spot-on reputation. I frequently tell people: "I wish he was my all-in-one doctor for everything!" The multiple red star Posters here know what I've known for more than a dozen years under Dr. Vahedifar's care: he just simply is a great physician! Period.
