I used to manage an orthopedic clinic, and I wish we were this good. I was in a car accident about a year ago. My lower back was in pain. Dr. Khounganian gave me some great advice; his review of my MRI was more complete and in-depth than any provider I had ever seen before. He took the time to explain every detail of the imaging study. Being referred to Dr. Khounganian's office was the best recommendation I could have asked for as I was in a very bad state, where I had excruciating back muscle spasms occurring since 3 AM. Coming into the office 30 minutes before my appointment all frantic and crazy, I was rest assured by the staff member Helen who was very friendly and kind that I was right place where this doctor was the best. I was very grateful that the doctor saw me immediately and was able to look at my MRI results and put me at ease that I only had inflammation that was causing the muscle spasms and that there was no serious issues. I was beyond frantic and worried that I would be having spine surgery and I couldn't ask for better specialist in this field that can provide me with more information clearly from my MRI results and getting some relief of information from my charts looking good and getting advice to help me to get better. He gave me great advice to stay away from potentially bad pain relievers as they would not assist me with the swelling inflammation I was experiencing. I was looking for an orthopedist and found Khounganian's name. He was my surgeon about 10 years ago. He should never ever handle anything sharper than a spoon. I've had 4 operations on my back in the lumbar region. Three of them with my surgeon from Cedars Sinai. All of them left me able to leave the same day as the surgery. Khounganian did a surgery and I was in the hospital for 6 days. Why? My Cedar's surgeon, Dr. Anan, performed the original surgery,dinosis, as an FDA trial. The trial was not approved by the FDA. However, when I spoke with Dr Anon, I was told while the trial didn't pass the FDA standards, it still had a high success rate. He wondered why the hardware was removed if it was performing perfectly. After doing all the scans and MRI's for my last operation by Dr Anon, he said that my laminectomy was only 70% completed. When asked if that happens with him, he emphatically said no. And he has done thousands of these surgeries. Other doctors warned me about him as well as they know have stories from other patients of his. Today, I suffer from permanent pain from the same area of my back and may never be able to stand up straight for the rest of my life. This is nerve damage from where Khounganian cut into me. I will be crippled for the rest of my life. I think that he should have evaluated the original dinosis to see if it was still successful. Rather, he never got past the FDA assessment. He just decided to remove all the hardware and perform my laminectomy at L3 and L4. Did I mention that it was only 70% affective. Do yourself a favor and explore other surgeons. When I saw Dr Anon for my 4th and final surgery, I asked him what happens if he finds something unexpected during the surgery. He answered emphatically that the reason he had X-ray, CT scan, and MRI done was so that there would be no surprises. read more

I'm so disappointed in Dr. Greg Khounganian and his office is so unprofessional. I went to Dr. Khounganian with major neck issues.  His recommendation was for me to get a C6-C7 spinal fusion as that area of my neck was the worst because I had a herniated disc. When I went to my PCP for my preop and told him what I was going to have done, he looked at my MRI findings and said "Why isn't he fixing the rest of it?"  When I had gone back for my preop with Dr. Khounganian, I asked him why he wasn't addressing all my other neck issues and he told me because "that was too much surgery."   You obviously don't want a surgeon doing "too much surgery," but if you have several problems going on, then it's a necessity. I had my spinal fusion surgery on 12/21/21, and I did have some relief after my surgery. Most   recently,   I   have   had   really   bad   lower   back   pain   which   has   been   excruciating   and debilitating so I had been trying to get an appointment to go back to see Dr. Khounganian but his office had given me excuse after excuse and would not let me have an appointment to come  in and see the doctor.  In fact, on one occasion when I called the girl that answered the phone  told me the doctor did not deal with sciatica problems (okay but isn't he a spine surgeon?) Since he had already done surgery on me, I wanted to get his opinion about my lower back so I  kept following up with them about getting an appointment.  Finally, after several months, they gave me an appointment with Kelly.Kelly looked at my MRI and said she would consult with Dr. Khounganian about the tear in my disc in my lower back and they would get back to me. About 3 weeks later, I received an email from Kelly (I have attached email which was sent to me). ARE YOU KIDDING ME!  You're going to send me a surgical recommendation through email and I can't even discuss this with the doctor?  This is HIGHLY unprofessional and they seriously should be ashamed of themselves.  I actually did reply to her email with questions, and got nothing back.  That is EMBARRASSING!  Dr. Khounganian should not be a surgeon, if he doesn't have time for his patients. I really regret not getting a second opinion about my neck because at this time, I'm starting to  have headaches and pain in other sections of my neck. My husband also had the same exact surgery as me on 5/11/22 (this should raise red flags) so you'll have to look for his review. Also, he does not do follow up images after his surgeries to make sure the surgery has healed correctly! It's like he does a surgery and then wipes his hands of you. When you're in pain and feeling helpless and you put complete TRUST in a doctor and then this happens, it's like a HUGE letdown to say the least. Always get a second opinion before having any surgery and make sure that you will receive good after care. There are better doctors at Cedars Sinai in Beverly Hills. read more

I don't want to leave a bad review but my neck got worse after the surgery and the Dr wouldn't even see me afterwards . I needed more than a simple C5-C7 surgery. Come to find out I had stenosis and closing of the nerve openings in them areas which weren't addressed by Dr K only ignored. Further why does Aetna think you accept their insurance and lastly why did your Nurse Practitioner ALSO say they she believed that Aetna is accepted. It was only after a young man who is the insurance liaison was asked to come in the room was there a definitive statement made about NOT accepting Aetna. I recently received 2 cortisone shots from Dr Khounganian one was for my hip and one was for my shoulder. My hip was causing extreme discomfort and I could not raise my left arm above my shoulder from a recent flu shot. After receiving these injections and the outstanding medical care I received from Dr Khounganian and his excellent staff, my pain was drastically reduced and I am feeling much better. I have been a patient of Dr Khounganian for many years and not only is he an outstanding orthopedist, but he has a very comforting bed side manner. Hi, I met with this brilliant fun caring nice smiling attentive team of staff yesterday for the first time. This was after the rude pain management experience an hour earlier. Immediately in the hallway, a guy named Ryan, was so positive and telling me about his back surgery and great the doctor was. I mean I wanted to video tape his testimony. I had already seen the 5 stars. The staff was friendly immediately ( I had seen them in the cafe and had thought, but a great group of ladies, they looked happy and fun). It makes me sad to write this review because I raved about Dr K after he did my husband's back surgery 10 years ago. When I needed a neck surgery I went to him with no hesitation and unfortunately my experience was completely different. If you choose him and have no post op complications consider yourself lucky. But if you do then Dr K isn't available. You're stuck with his nurse who will see you for 2 minutes and tell you're fine and send you home. I'm close to 1 year post op and in worst pain than ever. At my last visit his nurse finally ordered new imaging and told me over the phone that my pain is from a new disc bulge and wanted me to go get an injection, which I did not. I went to a neurosurgeon in Cedars who did a physical exam and took time to review my images and told me that the fusion has failed which is why I'm in so much pain. There is so much more to write but I'm hoping this will help someone to make an informed decision about their health. Always go for a second or third opinion and know your options. Ask if you are a candidate for artificial disc replacement vs fusion. Most top rated spine surgeons don't do fusions anymore. read more
