Paula's should get a 4 star for the view and the ambiance inside. Wait staff is attentive. Lunch seating seemed to be a bit too long given the vacant tables. A good guess would be a limited lunch staff. Seated tables were well attended by waitstaff. Now, the food. The menu seemed slight compared to competition. Also there is no alcohol, beer or wine license. Sodas are big glasses @ $3.45 each. The salsa was bland...it definitely was mild. Certainly not a signature salsa. Rice again wasn't special. Unusual spice additive that wasn't positive. Beans were clumpy and solid. Sprinkling of cheddar didn't help. Guacamole was smooth and almost had a pablum consistency. Not a rough mash showing chunks of avocado. Lime missing, salt, something? Salad was a big disappointment. Skip if you must. Iceberg, chopped timato and another sprinkling of cheddar. Portion size of Paula's Special Burrito (chimichanga) vs half is only 90 cents difference. Go for the full if you're aching for a burrito. #9 Which is a burrito & a taco is a more than enough for lunch (choice of beef, chicken, pork). Had enough tasting so dessert was a no no. Opted for a slice of pie from Croshaw's. Paula's has her loyal fans and (may she rest in peace) and kudos to her and her husband building a home, and legacy establishment here in St George. I understand restaurant owners often temper their cooking to the palates of their customers. I'm guessing that's what's happened over the years. While it's Tex-Mex, there is nothing that will set your mouth on fire or remind you you are alive. A dish of peppers would be nice. read more

Wednesday afternoon I went to Paula's to buy a gift certificate. The young lady behind the counter took my money, gave me a receipt and then walked away without giving me my gift certificate. I stood there for a couple of minutes and then approached a waitress and asked where did the girl disappear to? I was told she probably went to find a manager because only a manager can provide the gift card. I told the waitress that it would have been nice for the girl to say, "I'll be right back." A few minutes later the girl comes back and hands me the gift card. I told her I didn't know where you went. It would have been nice for you to say, "I'll be right back." She then said, "I'm telling you right now!" I asked to speak to her manager. The manager comes to me and before I could finish tries to interrupt me. I told her I hope the young lady is the owner's daughter. She said, "She's not." I told the manager she's very RUDE. I asked the young lady's name? She said "Evie." read more

This is by far our family's most favorite Mexican restaurant for a few reasons. First, their kitchen is immaculate. My husband is a delivery driver in town and sees kitchens all over the city. This one is always well organized and clean, and that means a lot. Second, it is family owned. They make a lot of their own recipes by hand in house, so you're not always getting some canned garbage. Third, the staff is amazing. We have always had wonderful service with attention to detail, even by the kitchen staff. Our food comes out looking delectable and we've never had a problem. My wife and I have been wanting to try out Paula's for several months after moving to Ivins about 8 months ago. We've seen the poor reviews but we're suckers for Mexican food. Unfortunately, the poor reviews were confirmed after our visit on Wednesday night of this week. The restaurant was pretty empty and we had no wait. Our server was nice and friendly but once we got our food, we immediately noticed that both plates were burnt and dried-out. Apparently, the kitchen left the plates in the food warmer (used to melt cheese on the food) too long, causing the rice and beans to become crispy and dried out. My wife's chicken taquitos were toasted beyond crispy and the filling was dried out so badly she couldn't tell if it was chicken or beef. The outside rolled tortilla shell were hard and brittle and she couldn't eat them. I ordered the chili verde burrito. I figured that a true test of a real Mexican restaurant is to see if they make a decent chili verde (and not the usual taco, enchilada and tamale combination that most folks order). Unfortunately, my chili verde burrito was the worst I've ever eaten. The pork was tough and the sauce truly did not taste like traditional Mexican chili verde. I took a few bites and pushed the plate away. Oh, by the way, my rice and beans (such small and chintzy portions!) were burned beyond recognition. I tried one bite of each and could not tell what I was eating. In hindsight, we should have sent the food back but we honestly don't want to cause trouble and risk having our food spit into by the kitchen help. I'm sure the family that owns Paula's are nice folks, and I applaud their history and service in the St. George community. 50 years in business is a long time and they deserve all the good accolades they've been receiving in the local press. It's obvious the local community supports Paula's due to the big crowds on weekends (we've driven up there and have seen the crowds and left to go elsewhere on a couple of occasions). However, we are sorely disappointed in their food and will likely not return. Someone needs to do some QC in the kitchen. read more

I would tell you about the food if I had tried it. My wife and I went to Paula's with my 92-year old mother. It didn't look busy but severe told to wait. They then proceeded to seat a party of 6 who showed up after us. We talked to the hostess who told us she still couldn't seat us. She then seated another party of six. We asked her when we might be seat us and she didn't have an answer. We had already been waiting 20 minutes. At that point we decided to cut our losses and went to Cafe Sabor. I've been coming here for nearly 50 years--my first experience was when Paula's was located in a basement in Washington City. Her original salsa is killer (it's got a nice little kick to it--much better than the mild stuff) and they'll serve it but you have to ask for it. Both the beef and cheese enchiladas are to die for. Get them SMOTHERED in sauce, along with the beans (best I've ever had anywhere) and you'll be glad you did. When I go home to St. George, this is my #1 go-to place to eat. Can't beat it. read more

Our waitress was absolutely lovely and very kind and the restaurant is super cute at the top of the hill. HOWEVER, I got the tamale which came with rice and beans and it all was... very bad. The tamale was raw and had what appeared to be once frozen chicken cubes. And when I saw raw, I MEANT RAW! The masa was watery. Umm, yuck. Took forever to get seated (2). Very disorganized up front. After we were seated, we were ignored for 15 minutes. Things moved along ok from there. Stale chips and most of everything was very bland and flavorless. 1 star for the nostalgia, as I hadn't eaten public school cafeteria food in over 30 years. Okay so first, the hostess service was not great. We told the hostess that we had a party of 11, and she said it would be a 15-20 minute wait. 75 minutes later we were still waiting. When we asked how much longer they stated "well the people at the table big enough are still talking so we don't know." We offered to split up, and were seated immediately. We ordered and the chips and salsa were fine, so were the salads. The chili verde burrito was absolutely disgusting. It looked like cat vomit, smelled like it too. I don't usually send food back, but this was not edible. The fajitas were good, we got the steak. Our server was Janet and she was so kind and quick. Definitely ask for her if you go here! June 28th, 2024 eight of our party went for dinner. Some ordered tamales and some burritos. The food was awful. The beans were dry, the rice was dry and the food was tough and dry. Our waitress seemed completely annoyed with us from the get go, which immediately turned me off... we were served our drinks, and our order was taken. The chips were semi warm, stale and pretty tasteless, along with the tomato sauce they give you. (Definitely doesn't qualify as salsa) Our check was brought to us, picked up & dropped off, quicker than any of the prior service we received. I was invited to a friend birthday dinner to Paula's Mexican Restaurant located at Ridgeview Drive, Saint George. We are 13 of us. The wait was long. We waited an hour because they only have two long. I was exited to try their fajita. I ordered steak/shrimp fajitas. It came with rice, beans tortillas and salad. For salad I asked for raspberry dressing. I was not disappointed with the salad. It was fresh and the dressing is really good. The fajitas with shrimp and steak is a disappointment. It was tasteless. The steak which is sliver of beef was burnt and bitter, the shrimp (2) shrimps not seasoned. The worst fajitas I've ever eaten. Angelica Mexican restaurant or Pancho Lefty taste much much Mexican cuisine. I give 3 stars because their salad, salsa and the waitress are really nice. Not going back there again. read more

We ordered delivery tonight, we had three ground beef tacos in our order. Well we got 3 tacos all stuffed with refried beans instead of ground beef. I don't know if this was a joke by the cooks or what, but when have you ever heard of tacos filled with refried beans. It states in their menu all meals come with ground beef unless specified other wise. I've never seen a refried bean taco on any menu. How flipping hard is it to make a taco. Then I tried calling them twice and can't get anyone to answer the phone. I've never done this before but I will be calling visa tomorrow to file a chargeback on the transaction!! Keeping it real. While in town my husband and I met up with some friends to double date. This restaurant was suggested to them. I didn't end up looking at the reviews until I sat down but..... let me rewind! This place is so CUTE! It's up on a hill and overlooks the beautiful St George red cliffs. I may go here again but only for the view. I loved the fun decor and the giant sign outside. From the outside you would think this was the best Mexican food in St George. You may even read a review that states that but.... sadly I disagree. I am giving this place 2 starts instead of 1 because I thought the service was great and I loved the vibe of the place. The salsa did not taste fresh and lacked flavor. I ordered the special orange drink they offered. (They do not serve alcohol!) the drink wasn't very good and almost had a flat taste. I ordered the Chile Verde and cheese enchilada combo. The enchilada was okay (edible) but the Chile verde tasted like it was straight from the can. Beans and Rice tasted like they had been sitting out all day. Now I hate to sound so mean... I really wanted to love this place however in St George there are so many Mexican joints to choose from. I can't figure out if this place is "Mexican" food or a take on "Tex Mex." They offer all of your favorite Mexican foods from tacos, burritos, enchilada and chili relleno. They do something different and start you off with a green salad along with your chips and salsa. I personally love chili rellenos but I didn't love theirs. They were okay but lots of eggs to chili and cheese ratio to me. I prefer more cheese to chili and egg, But overall the taste was good. They rice and beans were a little dry. The taco was good. The house made chipotle ranch sale dressing was also good. Overall not my favorite but my father in law really likes it so I will be back next time we visit. read more

This place is awesome! Don't listen to the other reviews, I'm glad I didn't ... I have to admit,I was a little concerned because of some of the other reviews (because I'm all about the reviews!) The decor is so adorable and the food is good! Chips: thin and not greasy(huge plus in my book) Salsa: is sweet with a small touch of spice (hardly noticeable very mild) Refried beans: good flavor (no lard, yay!) Rice: average for a Mexican restaurant, but again not greasy! Chili verde: good flavor and pork is good and lean. And they have Amazing views (see picture)!!! Very disappointed. Now I've been to many restaurants and never have I experienced what I encountered here. I asked simple question and waitress was not nice. Asked for extra chips and was told they had to be careful about giving out the chips and proceeded to ask my friends at the end of the table if they could share there's with me.
