I am have been a faithful customer prior to Covid. I requested specific hair services Upon booking appointment. An instructor Tracey reviewed and kept asking me the services that I requested. I repeated several times /stunned why she seems not have hairstyle expertise in addition student assigned only following her instructions. I never had a bad experience where the service detailed to her and asked her to see another instructor as I never seen this instructor before in the school. She did not perform the services requested stood over student watching student washing my hair no idea what She was doing felt aniety belittled and stunned How badly this instructor Tracie lacked professionalism addressing my concerns. Once student placed me in the area hair put towel ok wet hair I proceeded to manager desk with wet hair. Manager told me to wait she had other customers. The service still have no idea what she did on my hair prior to wash. No services requested were done and yes her had no clue except talk down to Me. I took a chair still with wet hair then I approached by school director Ashley Reprimanded how I broke student spirit ? The student had no clue what service to do ! I told Ashley this is not the service requested the teacher had no knowledge of hair services and never treated so unprofessionally. I am stunned a director would speak to me in public in front of the whole salon with students customers/did not speak to me privately. I was then told by manager that I would have hair dried by another student and Had to ask new student assigned to flatten hair As again I detailed services requests repeatedly to teacher director. The student dried hair and and quick straighten. I was told after I paid left students that I would need to come back for all services requested at no charge/no apology !! That next Thursday appt there for 4 hours new student instructor I knew all services Were completed and the instructor advised cutting hair 2 inches I was not happy agreed. After all services completed. I was told by manager that there was no charge. I told the manager that I still wanted to give student tip and that I would back to give cash. I came back manager please forward to student. I stated that I would be back for condition next time. I was told by manager that there would not be a next time that Management made decisions on incident with instructor prior appointment. ??? I was mislead on coming back for the services requested and manager stated prior instructor was in Florida dud not document the Roots lightened blonde over entire head of hair condition flatten iron. I am stunned over this misconduct of instructor Tracie initially and lack of professionalism and ethics of director Ashley. Only manager Kerry is the best ! Had to be the messenger To tell me no longer could go to school services. I would never recommend Paul Mitchell for students and customers. read more

I've gone here for several haircuts and I have always had a good experience. For the price point, you really can't complain! I find the students are always very appreciative to have a real life model to utilize and the instructors seem to intervene whenever the students need advice or assistance. read more

Decided to give the place a try. The haircut came out decent, but I could tell from the start that the student (not friendly/personable) had very little experience using the electric clippers. She hurt me when cutting the hair on my neck, and it was red/irritated and even bleeding a little when I returned home (see photos). My neck was very sore and sensitive when showering that night; it took 3 days before the pain went away. Never before have I had a bad experience like this when getting a haircut. I blame the school. The students are cutting people's hair before being adequately trained. My wife had a haircut here a few months ago, and the same thing happened to her neck! Won't return! read more

I will start off by saying that I understand this is a school. I am giving this a 1 star only because the girls that worked on me were friendly and nice. My hair is hacked. I requested some type of blonde tone in my hair. Was not looking to go all blonde nor did I expect it to be where I was hoping my first time, but I am orange. The girl that was doing me was rushed because of how long it was taking her to complete. Not only is my color hacked, so is my cut. I ask for my hair to be below my shoulders and near my shoulder blade. Well, my hair is above my shoulders and the cut I was given looks like a bob gone wrong. There should have been more supervision while going through this process. I called today to speak with someone, because of the outcome of my hair. I was told I could come in and pay to have it corrected...... Are you kidding me? They should have never let me leave last night. Maybe it was late, maybe people wanted to go home, but tell me this and ask if I can come back to have it corrected or offer me a refund so I can go have it fixed. I was recommended to come here and again I knew it was a school, but what was done to my head looks like my granddaughter did it. Think twice before you book. If you want a hack job, book away. The first time I went here I had a Groupon for a hair cut, deep conditioning, and "blow out". The deep conditioning was okay, haircut I had to redirect her. I have a side part and typically it's cut with a middle part, then you go to my side part and fix it. She did not do that. The blowout was an absolute joke. She's clearly never given a blowout to someone with curly hair. It was a giant puffball of frizz. For some stupid reason I purchased another Groupon for this place thinking it would be better next time. I live about 20mins away, but the last client I see for the day (I'm an RBT and I work in kids homes) is a solid hour from Cranston. There was a snowstorm that day, but I was never called or notified that my appointment was canceled. I left a message which was not returned. I called them the next day. I got a pile of excuses. "I'm sorry you feel that way" --That's not an apology, that's assigning blame. "I mean...we are a school and our cancelations are posted on the news??" -- Cool I've been at work all day....why didn't you call? "Well I mean, we had to go home for safety. It was a safety thing and I didn't bring the client list home". I drove in it all day and if I had to cancel a client...I'd call them but okay. She couldn't fit me in for another 3 weeks. She transferred me to a supervisor. "I'm sorry you didn't receive enough apologies!!" --umm what??? "I'm sorry that's how you feel" --Still not an apology, thanks. "We canceled over the news and social media and everything, so I really don't know what to tell you" I just wanted an actual apology--not a pack of excuses and to be blamed for this. I drove around in the snow all day so I understand safety. I'm not looking for fake apologies. Just be professional and cancel your clients when this happens. That's literally all I'm looking for. Since I had 2 bad experiences I'm all set. I don't recommend this place at all. read more

Students were great and the instructors did their best, you can only do so much with my hair especially if you're a beginner. Price was cheap which was nice...I mean you get what you pay for. This place is definitely great for a basic cut and style but that's it. Definitely better than going to a pro who would've charge me the equivalent of my car insurance bill to still not get it right. Main reception lady needs to get new pillows or something though because she acts like somebody who woke up on the wrong side of the bed every time they deal with guests. I had a phenomenal experience recently at this salon/school. my stylist Julie did a fantastic job. seriously, you should go see her before she graduates because she's very experienced colorist. I won't be surprised if I see her working in a high end salon in the near future. I had a same day appointment and I barely waited 5 minutes to be seen. my treatment took about 2 hours but it would have taken that long had I gone to a private salon as well. The fees were incredibly reasonable. I paid $36.00 for a $85.00 treatment. I also want to note that Paul Mitchell line they carry in the salon is half the price of what you'd typically pay elsewhere. I need to stop buying Groupons for my hair. The girls that work there are super sweet and I hope they learn a lot at the school and get some more experience. I *could* give 3 stars because when you go to a place like this, it's expected that you won't get perfection. That being said, I was super disappointed by my visit. More than I should've been. My highlights were not to the roots and my stylist said it was to make it look "more natural" but it did just the opposite. I had to take scissors to my own hair to even it out. Even my uncoordinated hands looking in a mirror did a better job. Yikes. My highlights and conditioning treatment took over 2 hours but the haircut lasted all of 60 seconds. I'm serious. I was horrified as soon as she cut 6 inches all at once and told me, "I don't even have to section your hair to cut it!" Um, ok...I was trusting her. But I should not have. Wish I could go back for them to fix my hair but I'm worried that would just make it worse. :( read more

This is a great place to get a basic haircut! I went in to the beauty school to get a straight, blunt haircut, to get the damaged ends of my hair trimmed off. I didn't want to go to my regular salon and pay $65 to get a simple haircut, so I decided to try a beauty school. The student assigned to me was friendly and professional. My hair was previously colored with balayage, so I asked for the color-safe shampoo and conditioner, which they had. The instructors came by three times to consult and check on the student's work, and at the end of the session even did a bit of trimming to achieve the precise blunt cut. For $12, I am very happy with the results! In several months, I might try them again to get a toner application to refresh my balayage. read more

This school is state of the art. I have worked with students straight out of graduation and it's always a great experience. This students are taught well and are ready to enter the profession after finishing there year of training. I attend pro classes there a few times a year and I'm always greeted with a smile which is always important in this profession. The salon part of this school is beautiful. Organized always clean . It's so important when you walk in and look around and feel that the surroundings your in are safe and comfortable. It's a place where clients should relax and feel confident that there being treated with TLC. read more

I came here because I heard good things about the salon for very cheap prices but my experience was also pretty cheap. Loved the updo but GOT BURNT THREE DIFFERENT AREAS ON MY EAR!!! The lady who did my hair was graduating in two weeks too... I hope she gets better with using the curling iron!! Good for just a basic cut. Do not let them dye your hair. DO NOT. You might think it's cheap but it's not worth the risk. I had my hair ruined. I went in with blonde hair to get some low lights to break up my grow line and walked out with completely brown hair. I was just told to wash it a few times and it will fade. It did not fade at all even over a month later and it hasn't faded one bit. I went in two more times to have them try to fix it and they were unsuccessful. Now over $200+ later, my hair doesn't look good at all and I have to wait weeks until I can get it properly fixed as to not damage it more. Some of the students are super nice, others very distracted and really have no clue what they are doing. Again, a for a basic cut this place is fine, but if you want more than that go to a licensed professional. I understand this is a school and they are learning, but just beware of that before you let them put permanent dye on your hair. read more

So, I was tired of getting my hair cut and having experienced people butcher my curly locks so I figured I'd try the School and save some money. I went with a Phase 2 student for a cut, and a deep conditioning treatment. The student was very nice, and for the most part she did everything I asked when it came to cutting my hair. My hair cut came out pretty good-- and I really couldn't beat the price. I only had two issues. One issue is that they don't seem to teach their students how to dry curly hair. I had to tell the student how to do it, as she took a hair dryer to it without a diffuser and that resulted in a big fuzzy mess ( Which she did fix. .but had she known better it would have came out much nicer. ) My next issue was the "deep conditioning treatment" ( I forget what exactly they call it), it was a complete waste of money. It did absolutely nothing to my hair. I've had treatments like that done before, and you can generally see the difference afterwards. Overall, the experience wasn't that bad. I'm not sure if I'll go back, but at least I can say I gave it a try. ( I'm a bit picky when it comes to my hair. ) read more

Our stylist was a nice young girl and I don't blame her for what happened during our visit. Im only writing this to let other parents know that if you bring your child to the salon they will make you wait outside. I waited for three and a half hours outside. The problem with this is that even though both my daughter and I had indicated we wanted about two inches cut the stylist took off I would say about 4.5 inches. My daughter has been growing her hair long for two and a half years. She is super sad and I feel terrible for letting it happen. read more

First time here. Had a root retouch. The student who did my color was very nice and I was ultimately happy with the color process. My one issue was the lack of supervision that was displayed. I have been to other schools in the area and there is always "check ins" to monitor progress. The student applied the color, set the timer and was done. When time was up she washed and styled my hair. It was fine but if there had been a problem it would have been a little late to fix it. One thing you can say about me is that I do not have my priorities straight. I will pay $5 for a latte, $10 for a drink, $50 for a used alleged designer shirt.... but I balk at the idea of spending money on my hair. Something I wear EVERY FREAKIN DAY! Because of this deep character flaw, in college I had a variety of terrible hair colors my roommate and I concocted over boxed wine. When I was 20 (boxed wine what?) I finally realized this had to stop. I made this brilliant decision because I dyed my beautiful (ish) blonde hair an unflattering shade of blue tinged matte black. Of course, because I was 20 I was pretty darn broke. So I ran to Paul Mitchell Hair School and begged them to fix me. Three years later, I am a loyal follower. Pros: You can walk away with foils, hair cut, blow dry and style for around $50. Your hairstylist (officially titled your DayMaker) does NOT want to screw up, so they try harder. The daymakers are trained on trendy cuts and colors so you'll become a little fashionista. They will fix your box dying disasters for cheap. Cons: You will spend over three hours here and your hair stylist will be at least 15 minutes late for your appointment. They call the hairstylists Day Makers... creepy. Reminds me of Day Walkers. Students graduate in 11-12 months... and don't really start doing hair for the first three so you won't be a regular for long. read more

I thought I'd give this place a try after seeing it endless times from going next door to El Tapatio's. Did a little research and found out the students are not left on their own, instructors are there every step of the way advising and correcting. I went in for a cut and color and couldn't be more pleased. Haley (#203) was my student and while she took over 3 1/2 hours for the entire process, the results were well worth it. Plus for both, I paid only $38 (not incl tip)! a massive bargain. Especially considering I had a master stylist right there advising Haley - although Haley didn't need much help - her instinct about a batch of color that didn't look right was dead on. Thanks Haley for taking the time to prevent purple hair! Speaking of purple hair, this place is fun because the students are mostly younger and LOVE to experiment on their hair and each others. I saw every shade in the rainbow and for the most part it looked well done (just not something I'm into! lol). The atmosphere is not one of serene quiet luxury. This is a working school and the amenities are rather bare bones. For me, I don't care. I've been to high end salons, paid 3x what I did here and wasn't nearly as happy with my hair. So yeah, I'll take the great hair over some foo-foo decorating and music. Oh, they also had some killer bargains on products near the front door. A SIX HOUR ORDEAL!!! I'm giving this experience two stars because my daughter's hair does look nice. That being said, we made an appointment for a cut, deep conditioning and color. We arrived for the 10am appointment and were greeted immediately and off she went with her student stylist. I left to get coffee as I knew it would be at least 2-3 hours. Boy was I wrong. We did not leave the school until after 4pm. SIX HOURS!!! When I returned for probably the 4th time to check on her progress , my daughter informed me that the leader had left for the day and the student had "gone to lunch". Seriously??? I inquired with three people before someone told me that they had to perform an additional process that took an extra 35 minutes. Somehow this information was supposed to make the 6 hr appointment acceptable. And when it was all said and done, they charged me an additional $20 to the price I had paid in advance with a Groupon for the service. Never again!! read more

Students are learning and are, therefore, more than likely going to work a little slower than a professional with experience. This is not a place to go when you have to be somewhere in a jiffy. This is my new spot for when I have a special occasion to look nice for. I'm notoriously bad at doing anything with my long, thick hair (I only wear ponytails...), so when I wanted an updo and makeup for my bachelorette party, I called them up. Why I did so initially is because I knew one of the students and wanted her to work with me, but since she graduated I've continued to go back because they all do such a great job! You can select students from 2 phases...phase 2 being those closer to graduation and therefore a bit more expensive. Everything is clean and bright, everyone is friendly, it's run efficiently, and an instructor checks in throughout the process to give suggestions and make sure you like the end result. After numerous trials and hundreds of dollars for my wedding hair and makeup at a professional salon, I'd take the quality here over the price there in a heartbeat. They really do a great job, the price is great, and I love supporting these lovely students! read more

Prices The prices online are different from those posted in the school. Online, it indicates that a basic manicure is $5. In the salon a polish change is $5 and a basic manicure is $15. $15 is more than it costs for a manicure at my local nail salon! The "Manicure" Granted, I knew this was a school when I booked my nail appointment. The student I was working with (and I forget her name) started by asking the shape i normally like and filing my nails. She thought the shape was good and didn't do very much filing. Then she squirt on the cuticle softner. This was an awkward process because the bottles they are given aren't very easy to use. Once this was done, she used an orange stick and pushed back my cuticles. That was it. There was no trimming or anything you would expect from a normal manicure. Nail Polish application To get my 'manicure' for the online posted price of $5, I had to select my polish color from a basket of off colored/last seasons polishes. I made my selection and the polish was somewhat thick which made the application tough. The student put the polish on VERY thick and tried to tell me that traditional nail polish takes a full 24 hours to cure. Sure, if you put it on an inch thick. I do my nails at home all the time and that is just not true. There are no lights or fans to dry your nails. With that said, my nail polish was smudged as I was putting my jacket on to leave. My friend came with me and opted for the gel manicure. I'm not sure what her student did incorrectly but it came off the next day. I also felt like the receptionist was trying to get us out the door. I didn't feel welcomed. I would have thought with this being a school they would impart on the students that without clients, they have no business. Based on the points mentioned above, I would not go back to this school for services. read more

I have been going to Paul Mitchell The School for years and love it! They recently moved to a way more convenient location, although finding it can be tricky (hint: it is down the hill from Shaw's near Garden City.) They have valet. You read that right. Drive your car right up to the front to get that $12 haircut! I always bring in a picture and the students almost always get it right! They have a teacher supervising them and if they have questions, they always ask. The teacher checks in every couple of minutes so you will not end up looking like a hot mess. I have gotten my hair cut and highlighted here and all were awesome experiences. Other reviewers have said this and it is very true: this is not a quick haircut. A trim will take at least 40 minutes. read more

Sadly I will never return to this school/salon again. I had a color treatment/ foil done to my hair that along with my cut and style, took over 6 hrs. to do but only lasted 2 weeks.. The student that worked on my hair, along with her teacher NEVER once told me that my color was a semi-permanent and On top of that the original color that they put in my hair( which was Purple/ violet) was now blue/green. I sent a picture of my hair to the student, asking if it was normal for my hair to turn that shade and never got a response... I figured I'd walk in and ask.. what's the worse that could happen, right? The woman at the front desk was more empathetic and helpful to me that the teacher was. I was never offered an apology/ follow up or correction to the problem. To make matters worse, I was told that the teacher was "Too busy" to see me. Unacceptable. read more

TURN AROUND!! Where do I begin? I've been going here for years. Just for cheap haircuts nothing too extravagant. I never had too many complaints. Except for this last time and WOW! I went there this last May and got Crystal from phase two. I just went in for side bangs - Again.. Just for side bangs!! She asked me if I'd like to have the ends trimmed. I SPECIFICALLY said KEEP THE LENGTH... Now I think that phrase is pretty clear.. "KEEP THE LENGTH" While she took a really long time, I noticed she was trimming the ends. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and just thought to myself "ok, I told her to keep the length. She's just doing a small trim" SHE CUT OVER 5 INCHES OFF!!!! AND DID A HORRIBLE JOB AT IT!!!!!! I LOOK RIDICULOUS!! 2 months already past and I still HATE looking in the mirror!!! I was so proud of my long hair and Crystal comes along and chops it off!!!!! When it came to the bangs, she didn't even do them!!! She kept on saying "I don't want to cut off too much" WHERE THE HELL WAS THAT MENTALITY WHEN YOU CUT OFF THW REST OF MY HAIR?????? Now I'm not one to complain. I told her that it was way too short and she goes "no. It's still long" SERIOUSLY???? When I complained at the front desk they just told me "oh, brush your hair and take biotin" This is completely outrageous! I came in a week later so Patrick (very nice gentleman) can correct the HORRIBLE HAIRCUT she gave me. But still doesn't erase the fact that she chopped off most of my hair... I emailed them earlier this week because it's so horrible, I was considering extensions.. while they were apologetic, their response was "you were here 2 months ago. There's nothing we can do" Just go somewhere else... No cheap trim is worth hating looking at yourself in the mirror for months.. I purchased a Groupon a few months ago for a cut,foil, and a deep conditioning treatment for 30.00 which is just amazing! So I decided to use it today, and boy do I look and feel fabulous! It's so simple to make appointments here. I was greeted by a nice girl at the front desk, and within 10 min my soon to be graduating student came to get me. She started by getting to know me and my likes with my hair, and even though I purchased particular items in the groupon, we changed things like.. I got a fantastic keritin treatment, with a full color! The whole process took about 2 hours, but it was great, friendly, and the instructor is constantly walking around and checking on progress, but I gota say.. at this point these students are dead on with there knowledge and professional ability. I got a groupon for a deep conditioning treatment and cut for $15! I then used another code when checking out so my total was only $11.25. I was super happy with my cut, and it didn't take as long as some people mentioned in their review. I think mine took 1.5 hours, and, honestly, I liked it! I felt like I was getting my money's worth because my hairdresser was taking her time. I think I cut off around 16 inches, so it was drastic but I trusted her. Horrible experience here! Came in on my birthday and asked for simple face framing highlights. The instructor said that balayage would work better for me. I agreed, but what I walked out with was a horrendous uneven ombre!! I don't remember the girl's name, but I do remember her friends name since it was like mine. it was done on March 3rd 2017 around 10am. She had her friend, Caitlin, working on one side while she worked on the other. Below is a picture of what it looked like. I had to go to a different salon to get it fixed. After complaining, they gave me 20% off which is something I guess. But never fixed it for me. She also FRIED my hair with THREE bowles of bleach! I love supporting beauty students, but the instructor never came to check in to see how things were going. Also she ended up adding about $30 to my original cost and when I asked about it she told me she had to use extra bleach (she didn't, I have short layered hair) annoyed and never coming back. read more

After years of getting my perms done perfectly at this school, one of the instructors that I had a previous little problem with decided to inform me that the type of perm that I have been getting for years was not the right type for my hair. She apparently either gave or instructed the student to give me the perm the SHE decided was right for me. I was angry then and am still angry now, six weeks later, when I went back for corrective work and the suggestion was to put product on my hair to weigh it down. I explained that I had just spent six weeks doing just that and my hair was plain out of control. Neither the instructor or her supervisor could come up with any other solution.
