This is what needed to open and happen in downtown LA. It's the new cheers, meaning this is a family/nieghborhoody type bar, none of that corporate bull. When you go, do try their "designer" cocktails. At $10 a pop, these hand-crafted cocktails are very well-made for the price. The Lauren and The Chanel are my favorite (think spicy margarita with muddled serrano chilies, but with cilantro to give it a new twist). Everything on their cocktail mixologist menu is just yummy. The owners are Venezulen, so be sure to note and try the fine aged Venezuelen rum that they uniquely carry. Eat: Everything. Their menu is small, but it's focused. Chef Alejandro takes you on a little culinary trip to taste a bit of Venezuela. You must try their Venezuelan sweet corn crepes with the queso de mano, dressed with sweet agave syrup. Their poulet and the braised pork marinated in guava and pineapple is absolute bliss. The prosciutto with the hard-boiled egg on pieces of toasted baguette slices is also a crowd hit. Really you can't go wrong with anything that is on the menu. It's only day 3 that it's been open, but I see very, very, very good things for this bar. It's not gonna be one of those "here today, gone tomorrow" type institutions, it's going to be the one where people 70 years from now, will be like this bar has been here since blah blah yah yah..It's one of those. Success hasn't looked so beautiful in a while and you will see the care and prestige in the decor alone, which by the way was built with the owners' own two hands. Don't forget to check out the hand painted walls in the communal dining area. Aesthetically alone, this is where you want to be seen, where you want to meet for a drink with a date, where to take out-of-towners to, or THEE place to meet with close friends. Crowd is a good-looking one too, perfect for endless people watching. Music is on point as well as one of the owners, Eduardo, is also an amazing and prolific dj/music producer in the Los Angeles area. SO you can count on NOT hearing a typical top 40's type set. (Oh thank GOD). Be prepared to be filled with good spirits, filled bellies, and beautiful sounds of good music each and every time you leave. I visited Pattern Bar over 3 weeks ago. I ordered some drinks from the bartender, and was told 5 minutes later that she lost my receipt, could I please fill out a new one. I said sure, as long as I'm not charged twice. Lo and behold, there is a double charge on my account. I called the bar and spoke to the manager Eduardo who agreed to refund me on my card for one of the rounds, as he had talked to the bartender and they realized their mistake. 3 weeks later, and after numerous messages left, I have still not received my refund. First, I don't see how it is so hard to call somebody back. We have already discussed the situation and you know who I am. I shouldn't have to leave you 4 messages. Second, I refuse to pay for your bartender's mistake. It's not my problem, and I don't just give away free money for stupidity. Period. It's a shame that I even had to write this review. All could have been avoided with a simple phone call, or even better, my REFUND. read more

The large windows and spacious layout make this the perfect spot for a daytime cocktail. Located in the fashion district, all the well drinks on the menu are named after fashion designers, including Coco Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Valentino. The drinks are strong. I like the Chanel made with agave and chilantro. I also like its Venezuelan corncakes, organic salads, or panini ordered from the small plates menu. There are also vintage sewing machines scattered throughout, while worn sewing stools line the bar. It's a fun and neat bar to go to, especially if you're interested in fashion. read more

Since I am a high end designer, fashion whore, I had to pay a visit to the Pattern Bar and pay homage to a place that names their drinks after my designer heroes. Pattern Bar is aptly located in the Fashion District of Downtown LA. It's an industrial type building with an open airy feel and for it's location, the bar is appropriately sized. My friends ordered cocktails based on their love of a designer and a design house more so than the list of ingredients that comprised them. Now that's branding power! Especially, since some had drinks they disliked because of the intense combination of alcohol. The list of designers on the drink menu evolve with the trends. There used to be a Galliano on the menu, but it is there no longer, after his fallout with Dior. The forever classic Chanel, though, seems to be a staple. read more

It was very dimly lit and the decor was quite adorable but upon first entering, I thought it would be one of those annoying prohibition style drink joints that seems to be all the rage these days. I was wrong. Actually the menu was nice although I did roll my eyes at the Champagne Coupe glassware. Why are those so damn trendy now? I digress.... This is a direct constructive criticism review. I only have hope that the owner will read this and take it into consideration. There is so much potential in this place, its nuts. If this review was just based on atmosphere, it would get 4. Not 5 because we sat at a dirty table yesterday for lunch and the restrooms were not stocked. The lack of stars is service and food only. We (there was 2 of us) heard that they just started serving lunch. We heard this because we asked our server a question about the menu, and he had no idea about that menu item and had to grab a menu for himself to see. Please train your staff properly, and do not allow them on the floor to serve if they don't even know the menu themselves. They're the liaison between the guests and the kitchen, you'd hope they have the knowledge to make the guest feel they're taken care of. another tid-bit- when we initially came in, no one greeted us, a couple of staff (there was about 5 working) looked at us, DIDNT smile and did not say anything. we did the wander with wandering eyes for a bit, and then it seemed like when we were in the way of an employee they greeted us. When we sat, it took 15min for our drink to arrive. My glass had a chip and crack on the side. The thing is with a place that small (its not super small, but you do have a view of the entire room), you can see that someone is just tapping on the POS system, unaware of having a sense of urgency to make a drink. service of our lunch- besides him not knowing about the menu item, it was almost interrogative the way he'd ask how everything was. we'd give the "its good" answer, and his response was "just good?"......if there's more to say, i'd say it. he was pretty bad about reading his guests. food- bad. we had a sandwich and 2 salads. Capresse sandwich was just OK. the Deliciosa salad was just a bowl of mush. there was too much dressing on some parts, and others had nothing. very unappetizing. The Mixta says mixed greens, but came out romaine lettuce and didnt have egg. Just confusing and not tasty at all. The food for me was nothing great, and definitely not worth the $$. I understand I did not get the staple dishes, but even the underdog dishes should shine on their own??? I read so much press on this place. I went because of the decor and the press. It just did not come through. Please please re-evaluate your service and food. I am sure this place is doing well for a bar, but if you're going to serve lunch, do it right. read more

I want to love this bar so much... and i believe it has potential. The atmosphere is great, good ambiance and music, and the bartenders and owners are very nice people. If your are looking for a night spot/lounge, this bar is off the hook. good looking people all around and great music make it enjoyable. However, I'm not that kind of guy anymore. I'm a neighborhood bar guy who likes my drinks on the rocks and stiff, I live down the street and I love what DT is becoming. I have visited Pattern bar four or five times now, and see a trend that needs to be addressed. Pattern Bar needs to see what other bars around the area are doing and take some notes. The drinks are incredibly weak and overpriced that makes this bar very difficult to frequent repeatedly if you are a local drinker. I'm not a fluffy cocktail drinker or a specialty drinker type, i haven't tried any so i can't comment on those, I like my vodka rocks stiff and strong, and would like it to last for more than three sips if I'm paying $10. They shouldn't be so obsessed in the amount of alcohol they pour in the glass, rather making customers satisfied. Management should know that using a measuring cup for a standard vodka on the rocks, just makes the place look amateurish. I just hope that the management reads this review constructively and makes the necessary changes to capture the loyalty of the people around the area. Make happy hour last to at least 7 (most people don't get off work till 6), offer well-drinks for a discounted affordable price. Having something to snack on (pretzels or trail mix) just make the drinker more thirsty and want to order more. Look at what some bars around the area are offering such as, The Falls or Silo. I'm all about returning to this bar and giving a stellar comment when i return. Nice open space on the corner of 9th and Main with a Columbian menu and cocktails inspired by fashion designers. Many of the building's inhabitants are young designers, and you'll see them enjoying an early cocktail here occasionally. A lot of DJs seem to pass through, too, and I think you have to check who's spinning on Instagram. I just pop in, if I'm walking by. The crowd rotates based on the DJ, so I would not go out of my way to come here, but it would be on my list if I were in the area. I've had a really good time here out of the blue. read more

After three years in downtown LA (DTLA) I have drank at every spot with a liquor license. Most are in -frequent and thankfully some are more often than not. Pattern Bar falls into this latter category. From the elegant grasp of period-correct decor to a first-to-DTLA Venezuelan inspired menu this place is tops. A classy yet modern decor is paired with knowledgeable bartenders that recognize the locals as well as first time visitors. Lunch and dinner menu items like Areppas and sweet corn crepe will appeal to those arriving with a hunger while the eclectic mix of modern electronica will draw in nightlife aficionados. Foodies will embrace the quality of ingredients and the often overlooked gluten free crowd will drive miles to finally have a age place to eat delicious food. Having Pattern Bar a block from my building is a very welcome treat that I will enjoy often. Just as you should. read more

Situated in the Fashion District, with vintage sewing machines decor, a drink named the Diane Von Furstenberg, clearly this bar is going for a theme of some sort. Not quite sure what that might be. So yeah, the place is a little too on the nose. It most closely resembles The Varnish or The Association (minus the weird musty, water damage smell), or for those who are Pasadena-bound, 1886. Drinks and mixologists are of the same ilk and all are adjacent to sketch areas, Well, not 1886. I went around dusk. While I was imbibing my 1920's cocktail, I saw a FIDM student scurry past because she KNEW that all the ghouls come out as soon as the sun goes down. It was humorous, but I felt bad for her. Typical LA dichotomy. So if prices, drinks, etc. all comparable, what's the key difference? And why did I mention 1886? The big difference between those other two DTLA locations is attitude. Because this place is somewhat off the beaten bar crawl path, there's a less insufferable arrogance on display. In that way, the vibe more closely resembles 1886. Went to go for some drinks on a lovely Monday afternoon in DTLA. Bf was telling me about this place, and how he wanted to go get his spicy dranky drank. All of the drinks are based on famous people/designers which made it more interesting. The bartenders are VERY nice and super helpful. The first drink I had was The Valentino. I saw lychee in it and it definitely caught my attention. The drinks are pretty strong, and not something to down. The spicy drink is called The Chanel. Pretty intense! I loved the atmosphere of the place. We were sat by 2 doors that were both kept open, so we had the scenery of the sidewalks and buildings. I strangely found that pretty relaxing. Got 2 more drinks which I both asked the bartenders for their opinion on. Which are the next sweeter drinks? First one gave me theee McQueen which had passion fruit inside, and the last one was The Gualtier which had watermelon chunks inside. For some reason, The Gualtier tasted like potato salad to me... Came here at night after the Night on Broadway event. It was crowded and loud. Which is to be expected of a popular bar at night. The bouncer wouldn't let me bring in my bottle of water so I had to chug it. (Lame) Also lame: I tried to use my Yelp check-in offer of a free sangria with cocktail purchase, but they would not honor it that night. (BTW - No where in the fine print does it say anything about any limitations!) This may have been an A-typical evening, but it seemed like they were very understaffed. If you want a drink, be prepared to wait. Also, if you want to pee -- be prepared to wait too. In terms of bathrooms: there's only one stall for men, one stall for women. :P I had the Chanel (cocktail special); it was okay. The fiancee liked it more than me. However, the quality control of mix-to-alcohol ratio disappointingly varied significantly from the first order to the second order of the same drink. Picked this place because it was close to an event a friend and I were going to,but we should have went elsewhere. The service started out ok,but then the wait staff completely forgot about us and the place wasn't even busy. My friend ordered the Bambino a pastrami panini sandwhich and after 30 mins of waiting for it (still never getting it at this point)we asked for the check. Sat around waiting for the check for an additional 15 mins. Then the waiter finally comes over with the sandwhich and didn't even apologize for the inconvenience or comp the sandwhich that they obviously forgot that we ordered. I apologized to my friend for even suggesting this place. And because we had to do all that waiting around we were running late to our event. Never again will I spend my money here. read more

Yelp sums it up with "Meh. I've experienced better." I think "A-Ok" would be a little bit of a stretch. First things first, there's no name on the outside of the building, and the address is hard to see until you are literally walking into the place (I found it thanks to my iPhone:) ). I came with a large group of about 19 people, but we called several days in advance to make a reservation and even left credit card info in case we were a no-call no-show. I was one of the first there and when I asked about our reservation the owner(?) asked who I spoke to, which wasn't a great start. It would be one thing if we made it last minute, but like I said we called several days in advance AND that day to double confirm AND left credit card info....unprofessional. I do have to say that the owner or manager or whoever he was (because there was no, "I apologize for this inconvenience I'm _____...") was rather friendly, but it just felt unorganized and if it were up to me we would have left. The food was so-so...no one ordered anything that they would go out of their way to have again.Let me be more specific....I ordered the Porco Rosso which needed a finishing touch or more marinade...someone else ordered the Tortilla Espanola...meh...and Olivas...also whatever. The Cachapa was probably the best thing of anything anyone ordered... The drinks are okay...not worth 10 dollars...I'd settle for 8 maybe. If I were downtown at the mart I would settle for this place, I didn't hate it by any means, but there are so many special place in L.A. and this just didn't live up to others for me. read more

Prices are pretty steep for the miniture sized cocktails you get here. But, they are absolutely delicious. My friend asked for the bartender to come up with any kind of drink for her that he liked. He came back with a shot of some wild concoction that was absolutely remarkable. He was not just a bartender, but a true mixologist. Food was tastey too. The place wasn't too crowded when I was there and the scene was pretty turned down. I wouldn't come here for an exciting night out, but more for just a chill quick drink before hitting the town. The concept of Pattern Bar gets a 5 star rating on its own being that I am in the Fashion Design industry. I had the most amazing cheese plate...the pesto cheese was the most memorable because it was delicious and it had these emerald green lines of pesto traced through the cheese. Slightly off the beaten path, this little gem is located 2 short blocks away from other drinking establishments on Spring St. The doorman and staff were extremely cheery on this brisk Friday evening. Seating is first come first serve, somewhat limited, so good luck if you have a big party. We found ourselves a cozy spot under the GINORMOUS window facing Main St. Filaments dimly glowing, street lamp filtering in, Archie Shepp's magical notes swaying, the place was heavenly. Serrano y Cabrales was to die for (thanks in part to Urth Cafe's amazing dried fruit bread). Joining the ranks of Perch, Cole's, The Varnish, Edison, and 7 Grand, Pattern Bar offers an array of vintage and delicious cocktails. Can't wait to take my buddies here! read more

Parking- It's DTLA, so the best way is to just Uber. Otherwise, you have to hunt for pay lots and street parking. Atmosphere- The place is pretty small. The pictures make it look a bit bigger than it actually is. The Saturday night I went was pretty dead; we probably could have played a game of hockey on the floor without interrupting anyone. I don't know if that was a usual night for them, because it'd be a shame. The space looks fine (though very dim), there's plenty of open ventilation, and the bar is fully manned. Drinks- I only had beer, but their cocktails looked decent. And the prices are pretty good for DTLA. The bartenders are very attentive and they had enough staff despite being a quiet night. This is a far cry from bigger, more popular spots with understaffed bars with employees that don't give a $hit. Overall, I would say Pattern Bar isn't really a destination bar that you plan to go to on a weekend, but it does make for a good stop on a bar hop. In fact, I found it because I refused to pay a $10 cover to Broadway Bar and decided to reward Pattern by turning that into beer money. read more

I came to the Pattern Bar when it first opened and when I walking down 9th street the other day it dawned on me that I forgot to yelp/review this bar. What I remember from coming here during its first months in business was that it was kind of empty and the drinks were pricey. When I peeked inside today (Friday night) it also seemed half full which can be a good thing if you want a more intimate atmosphere or need a place to hold a party. I spend one evening with coworkers there. Nothing fancy about the drinks; just typical beer and wine you can get from any bar. I have to say the manager was rude waiters were inesperienced. You have to remind them what you ordered or they will forget. The manager told me to leave the area if I don't move my bicycle. They don't have really good happy hours menu. It's something like 15% off on drinks. Nothing special about this place which used to be a bicycle shop. I'd rather spend my time and money at other places than sit among rich snobs. On a Saturday night after an event at LA Live, a couple friends and I were looking for a place to catch up and have a couple drinks. One of my friends had heard of Pattern Bar and offered it up as a suggestion. The best part was we only had to walk a few blocks in the freezing December air. I work just a couple blocks from here and I know the area gets pretty sketchy at night. The least amount of time we're walking through dark, shadowy, empty city blocks the better. We walked up to the humongous bouncer around midnight. There was no line or any people hanging outside, but inside was completely jam packed. After we had our IDs black-lighted and scanned, we forced our way inside while squeezing between large groups of people. The bar was totally full but after a couple tries we finally managed to put our drink orders in. Just be aggressive and you'll get the bartender's attention. With drinks happily in hand, we found an open space in the middle of the room to stand and take in the scene. A few minutes went by and we spotted some open stools at the counter by the window. We were sitting behind the DJ in the back corner of the room. The music was blaring at what could only be assumed to be the max level, so talking was a bit difficult. Being behind the speakers did make it a bit easier to hear each other but at a place like this the highest priority is not being able to hold heavy conversations with friends. Nevertheless, we made it work. All of our drinks were made really well and came a lot stronger than most bars. But be warned, the drinks are not cheap. Upwards of $25 for a Long Island and a beer for my friend. Ouch. Pattern Bar is an upscale place that seems like it should be in West Hollywood or Silver Lake instead of in the dirty fashion district. People don't seem to mind though, I've heard that it's as busy as this almost every night. This is not the place for a tee and shorts, but dressed-up jeans or slacks work just fine. I want to give five stars because this place has some serious potential and using the word "perfect" just doesn't give quite the justice to how my heart felt about the sounds swooning from the speakers. I have a hard time passing on mozz and cream. they did the dish well.) The bartender was the only person serving food or making drinks in the restaurant/bar. I work in the fashion industry, so had to go try this fashion themed bar out! The ambiance and lighting are nice, there's a large section of one wall that is completely open to the outside, which made the place feel roomier. Decor is classy, tasteful, and minimal. The best drink there is the McQueen, named after the late Alexander McQueen, my all time favorite designer! Super yummy time!! The Gautlier and the Lauren are also amazing! The tapas plates are also quite delish, though I can think of other places around LA that I would choose over this place for a tapas meal. The drinks are the specialty here. ;) Only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the designer drinks are $10 a pop and not that strong... I dropped some hella bank here. :/ Too expensive to make this a regular bar choice, but will def by coming around again when I'm in the mood for a fancy beverage! read more

One of LA's great places. Wonderful drinks, awsome night vibe with great music!! Planned a birthday here and reserved a table. Arrived with a group of friends after splurging on hot dogs & fries. Everyone ordered something different, so I took a chance. I really don't know what possessed me to order The Chanel, but I went for it. This drink will literally throw you into spicy oblivion. Its packed with serrano peppers, cilantro, bitters, etc. I had to go back to the bar to ask for more lime juice! I could barely handle it, and call me a wuss but I owned up to it. I did appreciate the theme of this bar, being on the cusp of the Fashion District in DTLA and a hit with the FIDM students. All walks of life came through this bar, and the DJ was pretty fun too. The ambiance is dimly lit, romantic but trendy yet minimalistic. It was nice to hit up a new place but not sure if I will be back. read more

Hip, classy place that makes me think of the bars in NYC with big open windows and walls and that business people go to for happy hour. Not a lot of seating, though, so need to be OK with standing - especially if you're just getting drinks because tables are for diners. Light tapas-style menu that I liked. Worked well for sharing among our group. I think we tried almost everything and it was all pretty tasty. The waiter was nice but service was VERY slow. The place was relatively new when we went, so maybe that's why (?). It's definitely why he wouldn't let me order wine when I forgot my ID - hanging out with several 30-somethings and no leeway. Good to know they'll be keeping their liquor license. Specialty drinks were named after big-name fashion designers, which was fun and clever. If I'm in the area (near where we were headed: Orpheum Theater), I'd go back. read more
