According to an inside source, Pat's dominates the Austin area in terms of Magic The Gathering tournaments and daily play. Maybe this is because she is super fair, sometimes competitive, with tournament fees and other miscellaneous costs involved in maintaining your Magic mojo. Or maybe it's because the environment is welcoming to weary D&D veterans in the process of converting, sometimes with the invitation of walking to a new pizza place down the street with other players. Or maybe it's 'cos she runs this joint in a castle. With a pond. And a bridge. LOWER THEM INTO THE SWAMP.

My nephew's birthday is in April and he's very fond of comic books. My brother asked me to look…read morefor Marvel comic books in Austin. First, visit Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy. From the outside, it sits quietly in a North Austin shopping center near Hop Doddy's. If you blink, you might miss it. Once you step through the doors, you feel transported to a totally different place like Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter story. You find shelves of comics, books, games...everywhere your imagination can take you. Dragon's Lair has been part of the Austin community since 1986. You feel a rush to flip through comics, try on costumes or transport yourself to a fantasy land. New releases co-exist with long loved series. Graphic novels, tabletop games, miniatures, dice, and collectibles are readily available. The prices at Dragon's Liar appear reasonable. According to the store manager, the tables within the store are reserved for Magic tournaments, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) campaigns, and board games spread across tables. The energy is welcoming fostering collaboration between new and existing players. The shop cats, Diana and Brigid, wander through aisles like they own the place, which makes Dragon Liar feel homey and welcoming. The store stays open late sometimes, acknowledging that games and stories don't always fit neatly into set hours. Dragon's Lair is huge, busy, sometimes overwhelming in a good way. It reflects Austin's creative culture...inclusive, and deeply passionate.

They've been in business for forty years and it's easy to see why. They've cultivated a welcoming environment for everyone from the "comic book nerd" to the novice. Friendly service-chatting up books and games with patrons. Reading and play area for kids=bonus. Large selection of comics and other things (as mentioned above). Super clean store.

I'm a sucker for anything British, even if it's a gaming room. Who doesn't love a board game cafe?…read moreThey had me with the architecture. Pure Tudor elements and vibes. They've got a huge outdoor patio with a Tardis and lots of seating. Inside they've got a couple of different rooms. You enter in the coffee house/bar side that has counter and table seating. They have a wide variety of tea, coffee, cocktails, 30+ beers on tap, n/a, sodas, etc. The center of space is a shop with gaming items, plushies, books, etc. Off to the right is a very large dining area with several cove-like Tudor booths. Perfect for large gaming teams and events and rad that you're able to have a meal or snack while playing (no outdoor food or drinks allowed). This is a perfect haven for D&D peeps. The British theme runs throughout the entire space including the menu. My boyfriend and I shared a Bavarian pretzel and brisket pie. The brisket pie was incredible and made feel like I was back in the UK at a local pub having a bite. Absolutely perfect. I'm not a gamer and you don't have to be to appreciate this inclusive, welcoming environment. It's eclectic, charming, & tasty!

Made a reservation in advance - for a small table, it cost $35. This includes 5 hour reservation time and unlimited access to their library of board games. They've got an extensive beer + cocktail list, coffee items, and a bunch of delicious pub food items to choose from. We shared a delicious spinach artichoke dip served with hot French bread. We also enjoyed hot cocktails on a cold winter night - hot toddy's and Irish coffee. Absolutely fantastic. After gabbing about the book, we chose to play Ticket to Ride, a classic board game. Had a blast , and look forward to coming back and trying more delicious drinks, eats and games!

That's why they call the store at the front. You have to be aware that they have four separate stores instead of one with four different departments. If you aren't and ask questions as I did, you will be treated as though you are demented. The tone I encountered was condescending at best. The manager, a woman, had no problem with their behaviour. She is okay with discriminating per age against customers. These employees are proud to make it clear that first-time customers and anyone over 40 are not welcome here. All customers should be treated with courtesy, regardless of age or familiarity with the store. If you are not familiar with the store or are over 40 they don't want you to shop here. I'd like to know how old the owner of this store, which is for some reason, made up of four little stores in the same location, even is.

My first impression...wow...this comic bookstore is super well organized. Large font hanging placards make it very easy to peruse rows of comics, graphic novels, and collectibles. The prices of the comic books were reasonable. One of the highlights of my visit was finally finding Black Panther Marvel comics after being on the hunt for them. Austin Books & Comics had a solid selection, making it clear they care about stocking both popular titles and meaningful characters. Seeing Black Panther prominently represented felt especially rewarding, and it turned my visit into a successful and memorable one. In addition, one of the sales representatives pointed me to the Black Panther section of comic books. Today, I learned that most comic books come out about monthly and they come in a series. For Black Panther, they had 4 comic books in the series. Now, I need to consult with my brother to determine which ones I should purchase for my nephew. Happy to have found the comics I have been searching for....
