My friend had me try the kesar mango last year. It was so fragrant that a colleague, I never spoke to before, asked me where I brought the fruit since the smell reminded her of home. I mentioned where my friend brought here at the Jackson Heights location and she immediately called to see if there were anymore boxes of mangos left. There were and she picked up one of the remaining boxes. This year I decided to try and find it myself. After trying this location twice, I was able to secure the precious fruit. I couldn't find the location of the mangos. I asked an employee where I can find the mangos. He pointed at the cashier and said counter. While standing in line, I watched another employee bring a box to a second register, open it for the customer to inspect. The customer rejected the first box because it was all unripe. He brought a second box and it was mostly yellow in this one which the customer accepted. When it was my turn, I asked for a box of mangos. Same procedure: bring box, open box for decision, approve and pay. I took the box of unripe mango hoping it does goes bad quickly. This is a great supermarket if you want to check out. I got a few initial stares from other customers when I entered and walked around the store. I looked lost since I literally walked back and forth several times between the fruit and vegetable aisles until I asked the employees (first time: not available yet, second time: go to the counter). I am truly enjoying the mangos. Hope you find your treasures too. read more

I love this place! It's always clean and well organized, and the customer service is excellent. The store is very convenient, with a great selection of groceries. I highly recommend Patel Brothers to anyone looking for quality products and a pleasant shopping experience! read more

Great variety. Always love to come here for my indian grocery and specially for my South Indian stuff which we usually don't get everywhere.

We buy certain Asian rice here and therefore a regular in this store. Place is always somewhat busy, which is a good indication of a good store. It feels like a cozy marketplace. read more

I drove a distance to try this supermarket and it was well worth the trip. Was only going in for a couple of things and came out with three bags. Excellent assortment of rices and grains. Produce was nicely displayed with lots of choices. I will definitely go back to Patel Brothers read more

Needed some ingredients so a trip to Hicksville was in order. My daughter and I knew going in there that we were going to stick out like a sore thumb with her lavender hair, pale white skin and gray eyes and her look did not disappoint. Definitely got stared at and even followed by an employee the whole time we were there. It didn't bother me at all but she thought that the guy was following us around because he thought we were going to shoplift. We had a list and even though it took us a long time, we were able to find everything and more. It was an adventure to say the least and only one person smiled and said hello, even the cashier had a bit of a sour face on, I guess they were too busy looking at my crazy daughter to be friendly in any way. The supermarket itself was very clean and well stocked. The check out was quick and easy. It was fun for us but maybe the next time we will try the other market there. read more

It's one of largest chain stores of Indian/Pakistani groceries. They have everything you can imagine in terms of grocery. Every Indian brand, every Pakistani brand, most items of daily use including fresh vegetables, fruits, masalas, cookies, frozen food, milk, soft drinks etc .? Always crowded, prices are economical- staff is nicer, not rude at all. Tip. They don't sell mutton, chicken- possibly their religious belief- read more

The people that work there and own this establishment are very rude and they look at you like they're swearing at you and cursing you as they touch your food through the register very rude and obnoxious behavior from staff that I have seen I would not recommend to go to this place ever It's better enough to even have this kind of energy into your body. I would give it zero stars they don't deserve any and there were times that I was overcharged for things that I didn't even buy and when I went back to let them know the lady at the register going through the whole back 50 million times and saying to herself that are you sure you didn't get a water on I'm like no stupid you're the one that charged me additional extra, I said very rude and full of venom leave them alone unless you wanna have a bad day very lowlife read more

Having been to India last fall, I am thankful that there is a Patel's that is a lot closer than a 13 hour flight! All things Indian, Pakistani, some Thai and other Southeast Asian food items. I will agree with a previous reviewer that the staff does not appear particularly friendly or engaging, but that would not deter me from asking questions about a product, if I needed answers (to tell you the truth, I have asked fellow shoppers for help). All manner of naan, roti, veggies, powdered mixes, cooking utensils, beverages, whatever you need to keep the Indian/Pakistani culture in your home and cuisine. read more

No stars. I just left the Hicksville store. My first time visiting a Patel supermarket. I was excited as my sister wanted some ingredients for a dish she was cooking. for my mum, a cancer patient who fancied a special dish that called for Garam Masala. Her appetite has decreased with the chemo she is on and she is barely 100 lbs... so I wanted to do something nice for her. I was standing outside the store and all of the Indian people going in were starring daggers at me. I wasn't doing anything just speaking quietly to my sister on the phone about the ingredients. The ambience was such that I thought I was down south where I would expect that sort of behavior. I shrugged it off and entered the store. Inside was no better. People didn't want to help me and more dirty looks from customers and the employees both. It was the worst experience I've ever encountered in an Indian store. If your black, do not frequent any of their stores. Do not give them your money. They should be ashamed. read more

So disgusted by the dishonesty of the staff at check register. Not the first time but this is the third time when the staff cheated me by overcharging and duplicate charging. I urge all potential customers to be aware of Patel Brother's, Hicksville, unethical business practices. If you choose to shop here, be sure to carefully review your receipt before paying. read more

Me and my wife have been going to the store for years but lately we have been finding that Patel Brothers have been compromising with the quality of food. We have bought bread with fungus on it and yogurt that was not in the condition to eat. We have made complaints to the manager. I would like to recommend to the people who go there to carefully examine the perishable items they should carefully examine the sources where they buy the products and try to provide us with the best quality read more

I love Indian food. I love it so much that I go to Patel Brothers and buy whatever I can to eat when I can't go to Apsara or Masala Wok (check my other reviews). The employees here aren't that helpful but if you just go up and down every aisle (there aren't many) then you'll find exactly what you're looking for. Prices are decent and they have frozen dosas!! They also have some regular stuff you'd find in any old supermarket such as milk, soda, candy, etc. read more

Selection of products is indeed good. The staff and employees are very cheap! Fucking sleazy. They kept staring at my girlfriend's legs. Good thing she was wearing stockings that day with her outfit. Disgusting, rude, and cheap shit. Go anywhere, Not here. read more

It's usually a good place to buy Indian groceries, but the review is just for their ''fresh" Roti's. The regular wheat Roti's when they started selling were very well crafted and thin , now they have gotten very thick. I believe they should have better quality control for each batch and make it thinner like it should be. read more

Every time I visit your Hicksville store I feel like making a comment on what might be described as the best place to go for grocery in Long Island. You go there and 10 out of 10 times you would get the best of what you need to buy.Manager Sanjay & cashiers Payal & Chhaya deserve appreciation for being extremely polite and courteous with customers. Hope the older manager & rest of the staff try to follow suit. read more

I went there yesterday. They are by far the best Indian grocery store I've been to. So many items... fresh, frozen, prepared, spices, rices, etc. There was also a vast selection of incense and holders. I quickly fell into mid-eastern grocery overload. I had found my shopping zen for the day. The store was clean and had a farmers market feel to it. Amazingly low prices. I was just grabbing whatever looked good. Wasn't paying attention to the prices at all. Some stuff I've had and some that I have no idea what I'm getting into. I couldn't believe that my filled to the brim basket of stuff only came to $13 and change. Score!!! If you're looking for an awesome selection of Indian and some Asian groceries, check this place out. I'll definitely be back. :-) read more

I buy almost all my spices here - spicing correctly in Indian cuisine is critical, and I had been shopping online to get what I needed and then realized there was a Patel Bros on Long Island. Great assortment of beans, too Very inexpensive compared to online spice stores. Good place to get all "daaled" up, LOL read more

A pretty large Indian grocery store, second to Apna Bazaar in terms of size. It's very nice clear and well lit. Reasonably well stocked and I'm especially a fan of the price and selection of their veggies. I love it, I love it, I love it. I walk into that store and instantly feel like a toursit, in a good way! There is just so much to see, to smell, to taste to try out. I go here for all my spice rack needs. A garam masala spice mixture at whole foods is about $7 for a small maybe 2/3oz jar when at Patel I'm paying $4 for a baggie of it! Ditto for "rare" items like tamarind concentrate and asofeitada. Don't even get me started on the produce section. It takes every bit of my power not to run up to poor patrons and ask "OH! This is interesting looking- how would one prepareTHIS?!" like some sort of geek through all 3 aisles. The rice and dried beans aisles are extremely econimically priced and this is where I'll come for most dried lentils. But the most facinating aisle is the pickles/sauces/curries/ghee/oils. What do I do with all of these items? Ditto for the sauces from the packages (just add milk- ahh sodium!!). Doesn't make them any less interesting. Mostly I find people ignore me in there. Which is fine I guess but sometimes I really want to ask a question (like- ghee, would you use it like butter? How about Paneer, do you only cook it or eat it with crackers?) so I have to rely on my prehistoric busted blackberry to pull up the google answer to my inane incessant questions (for the record-melted yes and fresh paneer with a pinch of salt). Most recent (and odd) purchases are including but not limited to the following: a marble mortar and pestle, sesame candy, urad daal, mango pickle, tikka masala sauce, curry paste, various spices, 2 collanders, paneer, tamarind, and the ever essential naan. read more

NOT cool beans! Just opened my bag of dry kidney beans that I bought here last week and they're all cracked, peeling and shriveled which means they are OLD! I'll stick with the Jackson Heights store, hopefully their inventory is fresher. read more

Patel brothers is the leading supermarket in the Long Island area for ALL your Indian food needs. I can't begin to go over the depth of their selection when iy comes to fresh vegetables, dried lentils, nuts, rice, pickles, ghee... you name it & they've got it! I'm still new to cooking indian food, so they have a nice selection of prepared sauces that simplify the cooking process. When you find something that causes you to wake up shuddering in the middle of the night, mouth watering in deep crave mode, it's a nice feeling knowing that its readily available here. When you're feeling brave enough to start preparing sauces & currys on your own, Patel's has a selection of regional cookbooks, as well as the ingredients to start cooking like a pro. If you're not that into Indian, stop in for the amazing bargains on nuts & dried fruits. There's something for everyone. read more

Tons and tons of spices in this place. Everything middle eastern. Pot and pans. This is a great place to shop if your looking to make some Indian food. They also have some really good frozen foods. Wonderfully stocked with every spice known to man, Patel Bros. did not disappoint when it came to selection. Some items are a little overpriced (cashews) compared to other Indian markets, but the selection of fresh and frozen foods and the freshness of the produce makes up for that. read more

This place reminds me of home and childhood. Many of the products that are sold here are stuff that almost every family in India used at one time or the other. Like the Mysore Sandal soap bar, or Parachute coconut oil, or the good old Pond's talcum powder. And this is one of the very few places where you get a lot of stuff used Indian cooking. For any Americans new to the store, try out these things: - Karachi Bakery biscuits - Maggi Instant noodles - Haldiram's Rasmalai (dessert) What I like here: - pretty good selection of Indian stuff - fruit and vegetables are reasonably priced - ample parking - accept AmEx (6% cash back on groceries) What sucks: - service, don't expect any read more

This is my favorite supermarket and here's why: 1) freshest seasonal and imported produce, everything from young coconuts to karela to chikoo to fresh dates, plus user friendly (read: frozen chopped) versions of the more intimidating looking fresh veggies (mmm, lotus root!) 2) lots of spices in bulk & convenience mixes (love the GITS sambar) 3) the most affordable coconut water around, and in 12 packs (my gatorade) 4) high protein & TASTY pulse-based snacks, great spicy cheeses & desi style yogurt 5) LOW prices This is not counting the sweetest cashiers ever. I am here at least once a week as it's where I get 99% of my produce. read more

When you eat and cook as much Indian food as I do, "going to the supermarket" means going to Patel Brothers unless otherwise specified. Competitive prices and anything Indian you can name. (Who could LIVE without pander?). The fruits and vegetables are pretty good and the infinite variety of spices will keep you from dying of boredom. There are now a variety of frozen products, including samosas, frozen dinners, breads and desserts which are very good and mostly locally made. Service is friendly, Desi-style, that means friendly and reserved, they are not going to join your bridge. Club or anything. read more

Not to be racist but if you're Indian, Nepali etc the staff will not look over you. I have been in this place before and the flies are disgusting. I'm not your typical shopper for this area, however I knew that they would have what I was looking for. Filled my arms with spices and other fresh produce. Great prices however once I went to check out this is where my problem began. They had a bagger who would not bag my items, which was fine with me however the middle aged woman a the checkout counter was literally throwing my items at me... I needed to be a catcher to bag my own items.
