I found this gem while at a park in Rhode Island. Slater Park dog walkers were talking about wishing they had stopped at the Pastry Box earlier. I saved the name of the bakery in my phone since I live close to Plainville. I stopped here when I had a day off from work. The environment was nice. Employees were talkative and friendly (at my request for information. Not in an overwhelming way whatsoever.) I brought food home for my housemates to try. It figures that I had to discover this little gem a month before bathing suit season but at this point that no longer matters. Its not a big huge bakery but perfect to get your danishes and bars. Also they have 50 CENT COOKIES!!!! Thats unheard of in this day and age. I bought a little over a dozen. The selection is good as well. Now one place I can't be in the Tri-Town and not stop at... The Pastry Box. Still the same familiar staff, sweetest ladies ever!!! Aromas were on point and they were loading up the cases!! Things moved and it's gotten a little face lift but the place is still a homey vibe immediately when you open the door!!! Cookies are a must, I got 4 of them all and a few treats to share!!! Carrot cake is my top tier for cake, so I always grab it if it's an option!! I did a cinnamon roll, raspberry danish, and elephant ear... all completed my perfect visit!! The lemon mousse bomb is absolutely delicious! You have to try it. The mousse is ever so slightly charred, and the rich lemon flavor is perfectly complemented by the tasty crust inside of a little pan tin. It's truly wonderful. The service - not so much. The employee was not overly explanatory or friendly when simply trying to find out what this other pastry is...all I can surmise is that it's 2 powdered donuts with a raspberry and cream filling. The donuts and raspberry flavoring are both nice but the cream is excessive and not very flavorful. This is a 4 star establishment that gets 3 stars due to a poorly engaged employee not sufficiently helping out a first time customer. The Pastry Box consistently has delicious cakes, pies and breakfast coffee cakes for a good price. I recommend everything I've ever had there, but especially the blueberry coffee cake with the crumble on top and the carrot cake. Be warned though, one slice of cake can feed 2 or 3 adults! read more

This is a little hole in the wall bakery in a back little strip mall off 152. My daughter picked a variety of cookies, which were delicious. They are perfect consistency, not too soft, not too crunchy. This cake, I almost wish I didn't know about it. This was SO moist and flavorful! The lemon mousse bomb I am giving for Mother's Day gifts, a key lime cookie and a black cherry chocolate chip for John. The Pastry Box is a fabulous little bakery tucked in a strip of stores in Man-Mar Plaza in Plainville right off the intersection of 106 and 152. I basically cut through the little strip between Dunkin' Donuts and Honey Dew and they're down a bit on the left. We have purchased all of our birthday cakes, hostess goodies and personal "prizes" there since this wonderful bakery opened. The staff is delightful and knowledgeable about all of their items. The "family favorites" are the Pie Crusts, Frosted Brownies, Cinnamon Strudel Coffee Cake, Half Moons, Congo Bars".....and I could go on and on. Their cakes are moist and tasty and candles can always be popped on for an impromptu birthday cake. They do take orders in advance for special birthday cakes. Just so you are prepared, they do not take credit cards. They have been taking checks, but I would check on that. The prices are excellent and you get a lot of goodness for your money. Suffice to say, we are frequent flyers and always look forward to buying a cup of their coffee to go so we can eat a Pastry Box Goody in the car. You never know what interesting new items might be there......cookies to go with an upcoming holiday, cupcakes, etc. Check it out. Decent local bakery but nothing special . My husband came home with a huge box of pastries for around $10! Nothing wowed me. The cheesecake brownie was pretty good but the lemon bar was not what I was expecting. The lemon filling was runny and thin instead of thick and curd-like. Chocolate mousse cake was OK but I've eaten better chocolate cake at Gregg's,. The chocolate cupcake wasn't topped with buttercream frosting so I didn't even bother trying it. A very yummy little bakery in Plainville, my boyfriend and I like to stop in here every couple of weeks for a breakfast or dessert treat. All of their breakfast-type items are delicious (my favorite is the Cinnamon Strudel Coffee Cake) and their regular desserts are amazing as well. I've sampled their Peanut Butter Finger, Cheesecake Brownie, Congo Bar, and carrot cake, and all are great. The Cheesecake Brownie is huge. It doesn't look nearly as big in the glass case as it actually is - it's layers of brownie (obviously), cheesecake, more brownie, and then what looks like Oreo-ish bits on top. It's delicious, but SO filling! Their carrot cake is the best I've ever had - nice and moist with really yummy cream cheese frosting. Plus, they usually have seasonal items. When we were in there on Saturday, they had jack-o-lantern cookies as well as cupcakes with candy corn on top. During the summer they had mocha- and creamsicle-flavored cupcakes. Overall, extremely cheap pastries at an incredibly good price. If you're ever in the area, I suggest stopping by there (and North End Deli, a few stores down in the same plaza), you will not be sorry! read more

The staff here is very nice, good selection and prices. I liked the brownie and apple turnover ok. Everything else, not so much. The raspberry turnover was not as soft as the apple and I didn't love the jam in the turnover and shortbread cookie. Not terrible but not great. The chocolate rasberry truffle piece was also not great. A good dessert should always make you want more than one bite. Then I got what seems to be a bismark with spoiled pastry cream. It had an immediately off taste to it, the cream by itself. That definitely went in the trash, 1 star. There are better bakeries in the area so not worth a return visit unfortunately. A solid bakery. We'd always get birthday cakes at the Pastry Box when I was a kid, and they were consistently very good. I always liked the pre-made, fancier cakes more than the standard, made-to-order ones. My only beef is that we went there for years and years, multiplied by 5 birthdays, AKA 4-5 cakes per year, and they never asked "Hey, you're pretty loyal customers - can I get your name and address so we can send you an occasional coupon?" or said "Here are a couple of pastries on the house, just because we appreciate your business." It could be a place where they know your name and make you never want to go anywhere else. Alas, it's not quite that. I actually live closer to PB now than I did when I was growing up, and my fiancée and I occasionally get pastries there. We don't really order birthday cakes from anywhere any more. If we did, we'd probably get them from PB occasionally (but not exclusively). read more

Tried a few different pies for Christmas and was not impressed. The apple pie was soo bland! There was def enough cinnamon but I couldn't taste any sugar at all. The crust was bland too. I liked the chocolate cream but it was very hard to cut thru the crust. The lemon meringue had a tasty filling but the meringue part kinda liquified as you ate it which was strange. Overall I wouldn't pay for these pies. Local grocery stores make a better pie. Glad it wasn't my money that was wasted. read more
