The food here is excellent! Good portions and quality ingredients. We had Pastizi to start while we waited for our main course. The pastizis are large and filling on their own. The owner Lenny, has great imagination with the ingredients that go into his pastizis. He has a wide variety of fillings to choose from not just the traditional ricotta or pea filling. For the main course I had the homemade ricotta gnocchi and my friend had fettuccine with pancetta and mushrooms. The Funny thing is that I like there pasta more than there name sake! Lol It's a small place but almost always full I can see why! The various pastizzi is like a challenge where you want to try them all! I've had also there ravioli and I'm a big eater but I was totally full after having there main size! Ok so it doesnt look that fancy.. but the chefs & wait staff really know how to spoil you which makes up for the atmos. I think they've just got everything right. My favourite dish is the pink sauce chicken risotto with a pack of parmesan cheese and pepper, YUM, YUM, YUM! ! - Or the chilli bacon mushroom penne, the two to share with a friend or lover will have you coming back for more, it's affordable and satisfying for how you feel afterwards. Its a guaranteed favourite, and I hope it becomes one for you. As I have tried nearly every meal here, the only .5 I deduct would be with the lasagna my mother in law ordered, saying it tasted microwaved, and some days the portions can be off (not over whelmed with bacon rashes like before) , but still, I have never left disappointed, just start from pastizzi's and work your way up to mains :-), heres the score - 9.5/10. read more

Have never eaten in here. Have always bought the frozen packs for the freezer as an option for those times one has nothing else. However, whenever I do pass by, I would get some fresh ones. Mainly apple pastizzi's. Ricotta is a favourite. Chicken & mushroom come close. Just love the crunchiness of the pastry. Have recently discovered their cinnamon scrolls on offer. This is hands down the best place for a late night supper. The restaurants namesake, pastizzi is a traditional Maltese pastry with yummy filling. They have many varieties of pastizzis from the traditional ricotta cheese to exotic flavours like curry beef. Don't stop at the savoury pastizzis. The dessert pastizzis are really yummy too! My personal favourite is chicken and mushroom pastizzi, with a dessert pastizzi of apple crumble pastizzi. Make sure you get them to heat it up in the oven. Great combo for a cold winter night. Best of all, the pastizzi will only set you back at $2.50 a pop! Great value for great food! Many people come here for the pastizzis, not knowing that this little cafe does awesome pastas too! Pretty decent food. The Pastizzi's make this place a bit different from the run of the mill Italian place. The staff were really busy and did their best to fit us in unlike some of the places on King St. I thought the seafood marinara pasta was quite good. Naturally you will come here for the pastizzi's. Well my friend did, and the prices were just stunning. So cheap. I went for the pesto pasta with prawns. Although the prawns were juicy, succulent and utterly delicious, it would have been nice to have received a few more. The sauce was way too overpowering despite being given some bread to accompany my dish. Never mind. The latte wasn't too bad. I was satisfied with the hot stuff, however there are better places in Sydney to enjoy a quality brew. Great ambience, and a buzz of activity is enjoyed. The staff need to work on their service a bit more. It would have been nice to have received some water as I was extremely thirsty after my pesto dish. Great company was enjoyed. Also, staff should not give you the menus upside down. A bit off putting, although a friend of mine suggested this establishment. I would not come here alone, I don't know why. read more

Went for dinner and ordered pesto chicken pasta - servings are enormous and enough for two, with room for a few choc pastizzis to take away for dessert...! Tables were full so had to sit outside, which was freezing. Staff were able to shift around bookings inside to accommodate us while we ate, which enabled actual enjoyment of the food rather than shivering hot pasta shovelling. Still awesome. read more

The pastizzi's are amazing, perfect thin flaky, crisp flaky pastry with delicious fillings on the inside, my personal favourites are the Mexi Bean and the Spinach & Ricotta. Their pastas are amazing as well, I have had their ravioli before which is fantastic and on my recent trip I had Gnocchi in pesto sauce. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly and the pesto sauce was delicious I enjoyed every mouthful. The only issue with this place I have ever had was last time I was there I was served by a young girl who seemed to be disinterested in serving me, she never gave me a menu or bought over table water I had to get it myself and I ended up having to order at the counter after about half an hour of her not coming near my table but serving others around me. The owners and all of the other staff are lovely and provide great service so not sure what happened last time, I must say I hadn't seen that girl before maybe she was new. Either way I will still go there for the wonderful food. read more

My dear friend Karen introduced me to Pastizzi's. Pastizzi's are little pockets of pastry goodness with particularly good things in them like spinach and ricotta or you can get chicken and mushroom or pea or chilli con carne or the breakfast special bacon and egg. And they're not like anything you've tasted because they typically go into the mouths of Maltese people (especially those in Malta). And boy, they're good. They're also on the small side so you can get - as was my custom on the day - one or two of every type they have available (there's about 12 different variations on offer but not all are offered on the same day) and those suckers (actually, me, I'm a sucker, because I went in there with Karen after lunch and not intending to eat) are cheap! Each cost only $2. Brilliant selling point if you ask me (no need to now). The café, as my Maltese friend Karen pointed out to me, is also a wholly family-owned operation so you know good care goes into little pockets of pastry goodness. Forgo the cannoli's if you can and the pasta and just come for the pastizzi's. read more

I love a good Pastizzi, I really do. And in the middle of the city, there are so few places where Pastizzi's are readily available. I know where I can get them frozen, for later consumption, but to get them fresh you pretty much have to go to the Maltese Cafe on King Street. Always busy and always hard to find a seat, The Pastizzi Pasta Cafe has an enormous range of both savoury Pastizzi's and desert Pastizzi's. They also serve pasta dishes and coffee. They make for a great snack at an affordable prize and given their seeming exclusivity to the Cafe, a great little treat if you're ever walking past. They had some issues recently in regards to the ownership and the staff and as a testament to the popularity of the venture and the love that is felt by so many towards this small establishment, boycotts were made, placards posted and protests took place in the street and online until the rightful owners were returned to their kitchen. A piece of Newtown's history, the Pastizzi Pasta Cafe is great for eating in, taking out and if you decide to take up eating out. A favourite for those going to New Theatre for a show. read more

Pastizzi Pasta Cafe ... I suppose by the name, one can probably assume what they're going to find at this cafe... Either pastizzis or pastas. Unfortunately, my first visit to this somewhat street food vendor on King Street, allows me to only comment on the "Pastizzi" portion of this cafe. I walk by PPC almost every day, as it's a few doors down from my work. Despite the cute wooden tables along the street and heaps of people buzzing about, I've never deemed it necessary to stop in. But today, that all changed ... I was craving something sweet, and the "chocolate kannoli" advertised on their sign was by far enough reason to give it a go. This casual, take-away friendly, but also welcoming enough to have a seat, cafe, initially surprised me for the price. Only $2 for a pastizzi and $2.50 for a kannoli! Secondly, the abundance of sweet and savory varieties was out of this world... Spinach and ricotta, veggie curry, chilli con carne .. Fa real?!?!? And apple, cherry and cheese and chocolate and ricotta, just for fun! Yum ... May I also say that a steaming tray of spinach and ricotta was being brought out just as all of this was taking place ... I'm pretty sure I salivated on their counter. I couldn't do it alone. I had to share this crusty kingdom with someone, someone sweet. I bolted the ten minute walk home, woke up my partner who was taking a midday nap, and insisted that we needed to put our runners on and run the 1.25 kilometres down to PPC. I told him we could only bring $10, enough for five. He agreed. We opted for our favorite flavor palettes: veggie curry, spinach and ricotta, lentil, apple, and chocolate. And perhaps our everyday love for all of the above set our expectations too high .... The pastizzis were "nice." Just nice. They were flaky and light, and the pastry component was definitely the best part. The fillings, however, were ultimately lacking. No flavor explosions. No blast offs. The tastes were far too simple and predictable. Out of the five we tried, the best by far was the chocolate, which ranks in at a 3.5. The others wouldn't score higher than a 3 ..... However! Let me say that if I was tumbling tipsy down King one evening, my interpretation of this pastizzi joint could change entirely; because really, who doesn't like savory, flaky goodness after a few drinks? ... And only speaking on behalf of the "pastizzi" in "Pastizzi Pasta Cafe," I'll reserve those flaky feel good treats for their mindset. No reason to rush back here for them ... On another note, they have a moderately priced dinner menu ($15-$25), with simple and seemingly flavorful dishes, and it's BYO! I couldn't decide whether to go with 3 or 4 stars but I've given the benefit of the doubt due to the already raving reviews and just how busy this restaurant always seems to be! Waited 10 minutes for a table for 2 Sunday night and got squished inside. We of course ordered Pastizzi's for starters and pastas for mains (I loved that I could order an entree or main size for my pasta - went with entree). Pastizzi's took approx. 20 minutes or so to arrive which was fairly poor considering I could SEE them sitting there (beef curry is a MUST to order). The couple of workers were smashing out take-aways and weren't very attentive to us or any of their other seated customers. Mains came out awhile later and I really enjoyed my mince beef freshly cooked ravioli; it was just the right amount after my feta and cheese pastizzi (which wasn't overly hot when I got it but the pastry was on point). After sitting around for awhile and not being offered dessert we opted to leave and were given 2 x dessert pastizzi's in a take-away bag as an apology for the wait which was actually unexpected because the place was busy and everyone seemed to receive the same service. read more

I swear I could (/would) live on these things if my thighs were more forgiving... Pastizzi cafes are a Sydney institution, kicked off by the beloved original & best on Crown St Surry Hills. There is a reason that place has been there since Jesus (allegedly) walked the earth: Damn Fine Pastizzis. This Newtown version and it's sister shop on Oxford St have branched out beyond the Original's formula of pastizzi only, and also serve up Damn Fine Coffee and other things like pasta that I've paid no attention to cos #pastizzi. Thank goodness this place in improve! Some years ago, probably 2009, we visited Pastizzi and had a horrid experience, but lately we have been noticing every time we drove past, the place was packed - no matter what night of the week it was. So ..... we gave it another go ........................ needless to say, we have joined the long and ever growing devotees of Pastizzi Pasta Cafe. I truly don't know where to start with this review, but to say, this is just what the doctor ordered. The meals are fabulous in taste, amount and variety. They are cooked well and served within the right amount of time. The basic dishes are done really well and the specials are a stand out. Another reason we love going, especially on Sunday evenings, is because there dishes are so big we can take left overs for lunch the next day - AND WE ALL KNOW HOW FANTASTIC PASTA IS THE NEXT DAY! There are a couple of downs sides, but since I am going to warn you of them, they won't be so bad. The first - the place gets really busy and the staff get a bit all over the place, but they will come through and secondly, they don't take credit cards or eftpos - just cash. Also, they are not licensed so being able to bring your own plonk makes it so much better .... and cheaper. See ya there soon. read more

The quality and service certainly suffered during that period. As probably did the reputation Thankfully however pastizzi is back and just as good as ever. Pastizzi embodies everything that this site was made for: family-owned, great at what they do, and a ridiculously friendly atmosphere. Lenny and Debs have owned this place for long before I made it into Newtown, and they and their kids will be running it long after I've left. It has such an authentically-Italian feel to it; the coffee is excellent, and served piping hot. This may sound self-evident, but some places really slack on that side of things - not Pastizzi. The pastries they have are in part an homage to the part-Maltese heritage, and are a delight. Cheap too, at $2 a pop. The freezers are packed full of home-made ravioli, of all varieties. This is one of those Italian places that entices you with its garlicky, mediterranean smells as you walk by on the street... and for me, it hasn't disappointed me yet! I came here earlier this year and ordered some type of seafood thing... I can't remember what, just that it was delicious! My friend had a delicious pasta. I remember having a bite and it was not good... but GREAT! Chocolate pastizzi is yummy too... I mean how can it be bad? Baked, fluffy, crispy pastry with chocolate filling - whats not to like? This place is somewhat an institution in Newtown. Locals and non locals come here to get pastizzis and Maltese pasta. No reservation so its first come first serve basis. You can also buy the pasta frozen and the sauce to 'cook' at home. I love their curry and mushroom chicken pastizzis. For pasta I really love their pink sauce. Drove past this restaurant while entering Newton to see it packed late at night and knew my bf and I had to check it out. We stopped by for a quick cannoli in the afternoon and it didn't disappoint. Friendly staff, reasonable Australian prices, and really good cannoli! It was flaky, thick with ricotta, and fresh. I had the sweet ricotta and my bf had the chocolate with sweet ricotta. This place is an amazing little institution down on south King St. Take your own bottle and order the Pastizzi as a starter, which can't be missed. The home kitchen vibe of the place is so great as are the amazing prices. Everytime I go there I absolutely must order the Fettucine Italian Sausage with the Pink Sauce. Soooooo good. The Pastizzi Cafe on King St in Newtown, is a family run business that specialises in special sweet and savoury filled pastries called Pastizzi. If you've never tried these little bundles of joy you're missing out. I remember buying bags of these little goodies-in particular the peas, the cheese and the apple flavours from their original store in Surry Hills, the maltese cafe, for 50 cents each about 15 years ago. Unfortunately due to inflation over the last 15 years, you can no longer get these for 50 cents, but luckily the original owners of the store are still making their pastizzi, except now in good ol Newtown. They have also added new flavours and fillings to the menu, as well as new main meal and dessert options. You should come down and try this place once, after which you'll probably be hooked and start buying the frozen ones to cook at home, cause you'll be craving them late at night. read more

Date gets hers, but 30 minutes of giving waitperson inquisitive eye contact, still waiting for my meal - nothing. 45 minutes and a "free" pastry is delivered saying my meal will be out shortly. One hour since getting served, my date now has been staring at her empty plate for 15 minutes wanting to go. Got check with no apology. Person at register said "wasn't my fault, don't complain to me." Manager didn't care, standing beside her. So I now complain to you. Loved this place! Great moderately priced delicious home-cooked food. I had spaghetti and meatballs and the meatballs were some of the best I have ever eaten. I had never heard of a pastizzi before (kind of like puff pastry with filling), but they were great. We tried Empanada, Chicken, and a few of the desert ones. Everything was tasty. The service was over the top. This was our first time in the restaurant and only second time ever to Newtown. We went to see a play across the street at the New Theatre and got a Living Social coupon to try Pastizzi Cafe. Debbie the waitress (manager?) offered to store our leftovers in their fridge and let us hold off on the deserts, which were included, until after the theatre. Who says great service is dead? It is alive and well and hiding in a little cafe in Newtown. By the way, the portions are huge and taste great the next day. Aside from the surprisingly long hike to the restrooms in the back, I wouldn't change anything. If you want great tasting comfort food, this is the place to go. We loved it. read more

This dining institution originally began in Crown Street in the '50s, and has since changed both owners and locations, but still offers the traditional Maltese delicacy with pizzazz. These buttery little parcels of pastry are filled with all manner of deliciousness, either savoury or sweet, and are the perfect size for snacking on at any time of day. This small cafe pumps out many different types, such as spinach and ricotta, vegie curry, or bacon and egg, and even dessert varieties like chocolate and ricotta. Super cheap and super tasty.
