If you are first timer on ice, stay away from here. 1) it is over crowded with a mix of pro athlete, hockey players as well as beginners. You can see about fifty people on ice at 3pm a Thursday. I counted it. 2) beginner class is not for beginners. I signed up for fall quarter beginners, in one class led by Tina and Peter, everyone but me knew how to march on ice directly and everyone else had skated before with half people even brought their own shoes. In another class I tried, similar situation. Here is my first class experience - I am a true beginner. I did not know even how to tie my shoes. A lady (I forgot this coach's name) who was tall with short hair sat next to me and verbally told me how to do it. I asked some questions but did not get the feel that this lady wanted to answer for me. At the same time, I saw Tina was helping other learners tie their shoes. Then we walked to ice after a brief demo of how to march and fall. That was my first time on ice. Full of fear. I could not even stand stable. I got even more nervous by seeing other people marching directly on ice. I asked Coach Tina how to stand still and not keep sliding as I feel that was my root cause and I have to resolve it otherwise I cannot proceed. I was completely being ignored. The next time I saw her, she was with the rest of like ten students on the other side of rink. During this time, Peter came here to help but I guess I was too slow so he gave up on me. I know it's my fault- I am stupid and dumb and slow. Nothing to do with coaches. Thankfully Laura allowed me to try for another class, it was about the same. Fortunately this time the assistant coach spent a bit more time with me so I at least know how to march on ice like a clumsy penguin. I was told to not compare myself with other students but I don't know how to given this is a group class. Until the end of the class, I almost never talked to the coach as she was busy with others. I know it's still my fault - I am a true beginner and dumb and slow. I then tried to come to the rink and practice and saw the crowded rink during weekdays. I tried to find some information and see if I can schedule private class, I was told not many coaches were on ice today, as well as departments heads Elizabeth and Laura. So I cannot even get much recommendations. I signed up for the class wanted to learn. I understand student will not get full attention. However I also do not believe this is how a beginner class should be defined and conducted. And how a rink should be operated in this very beginner unfriendly way. One star is for Oscar who was the only staff member showed lots of patience to me and Laura the learning director who allowed me to try another class (though didn't work out either). read more

I remember going to skate parties at the old Pasadena rink in elementary and middle school. It was a super small rink and the ice was choppy. In college we used to go here to watch midnight broom ball games that quite often ended with at least one trip to the ER. Recently my cousin mentioned how nice the new rink was, so I had to visit. I can't even begin to tell you how different this rink is from the old rink. It is slightly in a different location on the property. There is a full sized rink with really nice ice. It feels so much more open and bright. It felt so great to be back on the ice. I came during open skate and stayed several hours. At times it was really crowded and other times it was pretty open - you just have to time it right, I guess. As usual at any rink, there were skaters of all skill sets on the ice. It's funny to see the wall huggers, the over confident who fall REALLY hard because they are going faster than their ability, the show offs who want to show off in front of the newbys and the serious skaters who are practicing specific skills on the ice and hardly even notice that other people are on the ice. The open skate and skate rentals prices are reasonable - especially considering you can stay as long as you want. They even have open skate times available where you can bring your hockey stick. Private lessons and group lessons are available at an additional fee. There is a nice little pro shop on site for all your gear needs. There are many vending machines for treats. The restrooms are a short walk outside of the rink and there are bleachers available for those who don't want to skate. I do have to warn you that there is a terrible odor of feet near the benches to the side of the skate rental window (ewww). read more

This is my local ice skating rink, I haven't been to many others but my cousin from Rancho said this rink is far superior to the one in Ontario. According to her they don't re-ice the rink often and it's super crowded. I like this going to this place to experience what winter must feel like for other states, bundle up with jackets and scarves. Then in the summer time, it's a refreshing flip to the the heatwaves. There is a slight discount of skate rentals and entrance fee if you live in the city of Pasadena, to make sure a local takes you! South Pasadena doesn't really count as Pasadena, but if you get a sympathetic gal and you can manage to wheedle your hefty $3 discount... maybe. :) The layout of this place has changed over the years and the bathrooms are now outside in a bungalow. The middle section of the rink is coned off and reserved for special ice skating prodigies. Then as you progress further outward, the skill level of skating declines ending up with wobbly n00bs griping the walls. Ice skating is apparently a sport for children, I don't think a chance school field trip dumps the children here, it's just an experience that parents feel their child should have... perhaps a rite of passage to the local Pasadenians? Beware the Children, children equal obstacles. They hide their evil with their cute exterior, all rosy cheeked and adorably bundled up you would never know they are out to get you. Children hold hands and create chains of three to four, that take up a third of the skate rink width easily. This is their deadly clothesline method! Then the stronger children in a split second, slip and fall right in front of you in a split second, all is just a ruse in an attempt to take you down with them. A bold tactic that can only be dodged with speed and skill. If these strategies doesn't work then they will overwhelm the rink with sheer numbers. Their high pitched squeals of delight will pierce your ears and strike fear to your very core. The children here have yet to become seasoned ice skating battle warriors, so if you are learning to skate this still is a great place to learn. Came for a curling tournament with my new work team, everyone definitely had a blast, unfortunately I could not play myself but I supported my team from outside. It's amazing that they allow companies to organize these events, there were several trainers helping and training the teams explaining the rules and making sure everyone was safe on the ice. They also provided us with safety equipments, such as shoe covers to avoid slipping and falling on the ice. All the equipments were included (curling stones and swiping tools). The stadium is usually closed in the mornings but it was exceptionally open for this event. Normal hours start at 1 pm. You can rent ice skating equipment as well. Parking structures are all over the area, $6 with validation. Highly recommended very cool team and trainers! read more

First time going to a public skate here. Not bad, but it was crowded for a Wed afternoon (kids must not be back in school yet from the holidays). The rental skates weren't as sharp as I had hoped for such a busy rink, but I may be spoiled from having had my own skates growing up in MI. Also, my friend had his umbrella stollen (it was too long for the lockers), and I lost a scarf (which likely fell out of my jacket sleeve while walking around from the bathroom). I checked with lost and found a couple of times before leaving, but no one had turned it in. Unfortunately, if it's not locked up or nailed down, people will take it! The lockers are worth it. Took my daughter ice skating and tried a lesson for the first time and my daughter is hooked. She literally asked me not to come out on the ice with her after her lesson because she felt like such a pro. I nearly had a million heart attacks watching her from the sidelines but she smiled the whole time practicing her strides and baby hops. There's no ice for hockey players! The rink only made available for figure skaters and hockey coaches have the hardest time trying to find ice for stick time or coaches time. I don't understand it. Hockey players are treated like second class citizens there. I love to take my son to attend hockey session because there are some awesome hockey coaches working there but now we need to go Somewhere else to find ice. That's so unfair! It gets worse during public session. Figure skating coaches cone off the center of the rink for figure skating students and they scold the hockey players to skate slower during public session because they said their figure skating students will get hurt. I mean, why don't they post a speed limit sign in the rink then. Don't blame others for the injuries when their students can't skate! Last time I check, we all pay the same entrance fee to skate at the rink. I wonder if city of pasadena knows about this on going issue occurring in the rink. I wish it was bigger :( but it's a ice skating rink fairly close to home. Located in old town Pasadena so parking is usually paid or metered. There are a couple parking garages around with 90 mins free and the center does also validate parking (only 90 mins) so that's a plus. I love that they're open a good amount of hours and also that they clean their ice regularly. I've been here once in the past, around 10 years ago and nothing has changed. Stopped by with the love and siblings on Christmas Day for some fun and it was open noon to 8pm. Prices are 11$ for admission and 4$ for skates. Once you have paid, they give you a stamp on the hand to pick up your skates inside. You're able to skate for as long as you please, but once you leave, you may not re-enter. They have lockers where you can leave your belongings (1.00$ rental) or you can carry small bags inside with you and leave your shoes under the benches. They have gender neutral restrooms but they're located outside the actual skating rink so walking out with the skates can be a pain sometimes. Although I love the place, it gets extremely crowded! Especially on weekends and holidays. It's to the point where I'm constantly trying to dodge people. I'm not good but I'm able to skate to the point where I don't need the wall and haven't fell yet (knock on wood) so it's not as hard but dodging people is still very difficult. Other than that, love this skating rink! The skates always give me blisters so I've learned to put bandages on beforehand. DO NOT TAKE YOUR KIDS HERE FOR STICK TIME! This is by far the worst rink around for casual skaters of any kind because they always cut off a majority of the rink for their private lessons during public skate and stick time! This is not so bad when I take my kids to public skate, but for stick time, it was DANGEROUS! The stick time was all inside one offensive zone and had ONE net for EVERYONE to share. Since there is no age limit, my five year old was out there with grown men practicing their slap shots. I almost got hit multiple times trying to retrieve pucks for my two kids and my entire session was used to keep them safe and with a puck. read more

My rating is specific to those considering group lessons. My daughter has taken 5 group lessons, and I'm on my second group lesson as an adult. We have collectively worked with over 10 instructors during these sessions, and every one is attentive and committed to student progress. If you book group lessons as early as possible, you can gain 6 additional entries to the rink, which is the equivalent of $108 in rink/rental skate access, so your effective cost per lesson is extremely well-priced. My daughter is now doing jumps 8 months into her journey, and I am able to skate safely and benefit from a new form of exercise in my 40s. I can almost always find street parking within 2 blocks of the rink. Saturday afternoon sessions can be crowded on the weekends, so if you are new to skating and concerned about crowds, consider week night or afternoon sessions, or going on Sundays. read more

The facilities are generally well-kept and clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. It does get pretty packed, though, so that's. a definite down side, but the rink is large enough that you're able to move at a decent speed even when surrounded by lots of people. i grew up coming here, brought my daughter who's first time it was and i was taking care of her for some time when we just realized it was very difficult for her a worker allowed my daughter to use a walker they were completely okay with it, the guy with the yellow jacket could've gone about the situation very differently and i let it slide in that moment because i wasn't going to let him ruin the rest of our time, he was very rude the way he came up to us as if we were purposely breaking rules we didn't know, his approach was terrible and my daughter felt bullied by the way he came at us & just took the walker away when they had previously just let her take one we were face to face there was no need for the hostility we entered here from about 2-3ish pls talk to your staff and let them know there are better ways to communicate read more

Your average ice skating rink. It's in a nice location and parking isn't awful (there's a validation machine in the entrance that takes a few dollars off the cost). However, I think the ice should be Zambonied (for lack of better words) more often. I went on Saturday for both the 1-3pm and 8-10pm public session. I noticed they only do so at the end. I think it's unfair that only the hockey teams, figure skaters, and other non-public users get to enjoy smooth ice. What are we paying for then? I also agree with other reviews that this place is in need of upgrades. At the very least, the rental skates need to be replaced. read more

I love coming to skate here! Public sessions can get pretty packed especially on the weekends or over the summer. The rink is cold but its not cold enough that you need to dress in several layers since you warm up once you get moving on the ice. Size down on skate rentals since you want them to be snug! Admission: $10 Skate rental: $4 They have group discounts. Check their website for more info. Pasadena residents (with ID) get a $1 discount on admission/skate rental. The Thursday night session (Cheap Skate) is only $10 which includes both admission and skate rentals! Restrooms are located outside of the rink. My boyfriend and I came here to skate this past weekend. He knew that I used to love iceskating and he wanted to give it a try! The service was fast, and the people who worked there were friendly, but it was tough finding a skates that were not painful wear. I tried on a few ones and they were super old, and some had duct tape slapped around them to keep them in tact. The place was really crowded, which was expected as its right before Christmas. The thing that was hard for me to understand is why the ice was NOT smooth! There were HUGE divots in the ice.. I'm assuming from people playing hockey before they opened the rink to the public, but honestly it felt like I was skating on gravel. All around me, people were falling on the ice, and sadly for me I have NEVER fallen while ice skating. But this time I DID! I tripped in one of these Divots and fell straight down on my face, with my ribcage slamming against the ice, and my glasses sliding about 10 feet in front me in. I couldn't see, and nobody helped me. I had to be laying there for about 10 seconds. It was a pretty bad fall, and I couldn't get up, so I had to slide myself to try to get to my glasses without them getting skated over. When I put them back on, I could see a worker nearby, chatting with her friend, and nobody caring to even offer to help me get off the ice! PLEASE, if you guys are gonna have that many people skating on your rink, PLEASE smooth out the ice, for the safety of those skating! We sadly won't be back here. :( read more

wow this is one of the worst ice skating trips I have ever EVER had. I love skating. I love free skating. I like the facility... But seriously after an hour of free skate with about 200+ people on the ice you MUST run the zamboni around for a quick fix. Well they were unable to run the zamboni in the middle of the free skate. This is honestly a SERIOUS issue. I saw people falling and almost went down myself a number of times due to the cuts in the ice. Added to this, I got there at 8:15 and wasnt able to make it onto the ice for 30 minutes! The line outside in the rain was about 15-20 minutes to pay for free skate and get inside. My friend also had to wait another 5-10 minutes to get her skates. Once we had our skates on we hopped on the ice and saw the ice was a bit choppy but I am thinking its almost zamboni time no biggie.. well lo and behold you already read that they didnt run the zamboni around and said it would take half an hour. I bet they could have done the rink in 15 minutes. However they dont have time in their schedule to do it. I just hope the guy that fell and was clutching his knee wasnt stuck in a rut and that he didnt injure his knee too badly. None the less I had fun skating and talking, but still please keep the ice in good conditions... and when the ice is so choppy you feel like you are skating on rollerblades over gravel that is real real bad. Also what takes so long to let people into the facility? Does it really take a minute per person to let everyone in when you have two windows open??? perhaps a cash only window or spot to let those people in more quickly. I would also like to question the brialliance of having multiple people walking on the ice (read not in skates) to supervise the rink. SERIOUSLY WTH! These people were randomly walking all over and almost got run over numerous times and were in the way of everyone. Fine if you want to stand out of the way on the ice so be it... but walking back and fourth through the free skate lanes when you have 200 people skating, are you really that STUPID? I dont even know if I will want to go back. This seriously was the worst free skate I have ever gone to. read more

3.25.10: I have not gone ice-skating in so long. I could not wait for this day to come. My friend has decided to put a get-together. I could not believe how cheap it was as well. I believe it was a Thursday Special about $10? I already forgot. Ha ha. Anyhow, they have new and old skates and they do not mind changing it for you if you do not feel comfortable. There were a good amount of people that day but it was still fun. It is a great way to just try to circle around while these little 5 year olds are doing the triple toe thing in the middle. Like any movie full of cliches, this place would make an awesome setting. You can remake the Mighty Ducks here, but with broomball. How awesome would that be? Wanna settle an argument? Who needs Dodgeball? You can settle it playing broomball instead. Have a bunch of troubled poor inner city kids? You can reach them with broomball. Another story could be, kid playing broomball woos figure skater in training. Who wants to rumble? You can throw down at the rink. Broomball costs like 300 bucks an hour, but if you roll with a huge posse, then it isnt that expensive. Plus seeing your friends fall on their butts as they try to go after a rubber ball is priceless. Just watch out though if you decide to leave your car here. Recently I went ice-skating with my friends and their kids here in Pasadena Ice Skating Center. I haven't been here for a year or two and I was surprised because it used to be located underground at the Civic Center. It's also smaller in size as I remembered and now they have a huge white tarp roof with bigger rink. They only opened for public about 2 hours in the afternoon, between 1-3pm on weekends. It was pretty fun, despite huge crowds of people, at least there are still spaces for people to learn and not bump directly to each other. The rental and admission is about $13 per person, it's not bad at all. There's a locker if you would like to put your valuables for like $1. The worst part was parking, it was $10 (if you ask for validation with entrance to the rink, it's like a discount of $2), so total became $8. So ridiculous! At first I thought after validation, it would be $2, but that was only the discount. In any case, I would probably come back here and will try my best to park on the meter parking, though you have to refill every hour as it's a 1-hour max parking only. read more

We probably won't ever come here again. We've had some semi ok experiences at this rink in the past, but each visit has been far from great. This most recent visit was definitely the worst experience of them all. First off, parking is $15... and although they validate, the validation is a $2 discount. Secondly, this rink always charges the wrong rate. If you ask for for skating only, without fail, they will charge you for skate rental, even if you specify skating only... so pay attention to the amount you're being charged. The rink itself isn't horrible, but it isn't great and with so many better options in SoCal, this rink will never be at the top of our list. Now comes the main reason we will never return, during a public skating session, another skater ran into my daughter and caused irreparable damage to her Harlick boot. What is the point of having employees out on the ice if they aren't going to do anything to control people skating recklessly especially with so many children around? It's irresponsible and I'm fortunate that this reckless adult skater didn't seriously injure my child. The staff were made aware of the problem/damage and they all just stood around doing nothing to help resolve the issue. Had their employees done their job to begin with, which was making sure everyone was skating in a safe and courteous manner, this incident would have never occurred. read more

Make sure that you check their website for specific Open Skate times because you cannot just come in whenever you feel like it and expect their to be Open Skate for you! I came on a Saturday evening with the boyfriend and at first glance, it was SOOO PACKED! Skates do not come in 1/2 sizes so just be safe when skating! When we got on the ice, it was still very crowded, but not so much that you can't even skate. For the 2 hours that they had open skate, there were so many people that the ice became pretty rough. Regardless, we had such a fun time!! Parking: We actually parked on the streets of Pasadena. However, when I used to come here a long time ago, I remember there being a parking lot closer to the entrance of the rink. Staff even help us take a group picture since we are the majority customer like 20 out of 25!!!! Besides, they have broomball event that you could rent the place. My kids take private lessons here and the instructor is wonderful. However, be careful ordering tickets online. It is very pricey and if you by accident schedule the wrong day, they will not transfer the balance under any circumstances. So on top of paying for the private lessons you will lose out on the money for the admission which is 18 dollars per person for admission plus skate rental. I can understand this for someone that is a drop in but when a family that regularly frequents your business makes an honest mistake and you make absolutely no attempt to try to fix the situation, that is just terrible business practice. When I asked if that meant that the rink would just take the 54 dollars the woman at the front nodded and said "well it's on the website." So disappointing. read more

There are figure skaters spinning and jumping in every direction with complete disregard for the general public. My nine year was run over and hurt by a figure skater practicing with a coach. The coach said it was my child's fault for not watching out. When I brought this up to the rink staff they did nothing. I've been to many rinks in Southern California, and overall, this rink is by far the most dangerous with the worst management I've encountered. read more

I went here for my friend's Christmas party. The boss of the company rented out the rink for some ice broom hockey late at night. I arrived at 10pm, which is when they closed so everyone was leaving. I won't comment on the ice skating during their regular hours, but just note that the place is filled with "kids." And when I say "kids," I think most here were in their teens or early 20s. I can't tell these days since I'm getting to be that middle-aged dude where everyone is starting to look "youngish." Anyway, overall it's a nice rink. It's located right across from the Paseo shopping center. The rink is very large and there's a lot of seating so you can watch your "kid" skate around. The only downside is that you'll have to pay for parking. Also, the ticket taker wasn't especially helpful or friendly, but she wasn't overly rude either. As an "older" dude, would I go there? Probably not since it's filled with a younger crowd, but if you're dropping off your kids, this is a good place to go. read more
