Magpie's is great because it's a store that features unique items. Everything here from local (Leduc, Beaumont ad Edmonton area) artisans and producers. There's a huge variety of gifts here, kitchen stuff, jewellery, art, bath products, and greeting cards. They also have a nice selection of kids toys as well. I always enjoy popping into Magpie's to see what's new because the vendors change every once in a while (maybe every few months). It's one of the stores where if you see something you like you'll want to buy it, because you can't be sure it'll be there next time. But the one thing that always stands out to me is the staff. Everything I've come in the person working is very friendly and helpful. One time I came in and talked to the lady working about needing to find a thank you card for a friend I was going to visit in Vancouver. Came in a few weeks later to look for something else and the same lady remembered me and asked how my trip to Vancouver was. Super friendly staff, really cool unique products that support local artisans and craftspeople is always a win. If you're in Leduc make sure to stop into Magpie's.

Now you can find a Dollar store in most malls or by the big box stores. I was in Westmount and decided to check out their birthday decoration selection. Although they did have some decorations, they didn't have anything specific for milestone birthdays. It was more of the generic standard streamers or birthday banner, candles, and napkins and plates. I browsed the other aisles and they do have a large selection of items for the home, holidays, and just about anything else you want to spend a dollar or two on. Seems pretty busy too but I didn't find anything I wanted for a dollar.

They were really busy (the saleslady claimed they weren't but there were about 12 people in line). It took awhile for them to get someone else up at the till to help with the huge line up and when someone id come to help, they didn't make a great transition. Instead of telling the next person in line to go over to the new till, they let it be a free-for-all so everyone rushed over to the newly opened till. It was really disorganized. This Dollarama has a good selection though. It's pretty big and they have a lot of good stuff. The staff brings their rating down significantly though.

Alyssa helped me at the counter, and she was wonderful -- friendly, patient, and genuinely engaged in making sure I found exactly what I was looking for. With so many Hallmark locations in Edmonton now closed, it's great that the WEM and Southgate Mall stores are still here. These two locations have become the last reliable places in the city to find quality cards, gifts, Keepsakes, and those nostalgic items Hallmark is known for. The WEM store really carries that comforting mix of tradition and thoughtful merchandise. When I worked in Manulife Bldg I regularly stopped and shopped at then Hallmark in Edm City Centre which sadly closed!! Igot some bargains even then!! The Snoopy/Charlie Brown piece was a perfect find, and the candle selection was better than expected. Alyssa's service made the visit even better -- attentive without rushing, and knowledgeable about the Keepsakes items. A great spot for gifts, collectibles, and those small things that brighten your day. Who doesn't need to buy a card, ornament, album, or trinket for a gift? The last few times I have…read morebeen in this store, I was pleasantly surprised to see they had sales. Maybe they are thinking it's a good strategy for their overpriced gifts and to compete with another card store that often has buy one get one 50% off. I noticed the table at the front with albums including ones for baby, and wedding. They would make a great gift and many were marked down at least 30-40% off the ticketed price. I found a premade baby scrapbook which would be ideal for a new mom as she wouldn't have time to scrapbook and could just slap photos on pages already with embellishments and could add the stickers to it. When I went to pay for the album, it was cheaper than the ticketed sale price, yay! I like taking a look at the Christmas ornaments and if you plan on getting one for yourself or a friend, you may want to nab it months before as they can sell out of the popular ones. I have waited until after and the selection is slim but 40-50% off is a more reasonable price if you don't mind putting it on your tree after the day. I'm also a fan of their Peanuts collection. I have the talking Peanut characters they put out for Christmas a few years ago and the prices were good. I bring them out every December and they still talk. If I need a card for any occasion or a holiday gift, I'll be back to check out the selection.
