Rose Cafe & Donuts has probably got the best breakfast sandwiches in San Clemente, although, I have to admit, this was really the first time I had ever "checked out" San Clemente longer than a pit stop for gas. As my mom and I were "passing through" taking this l-o-n-g-e-r rest stop from driving on the 5 (we were on our way to San Diego), we decided to get something more substantial to eat. Anyway, you have to go here. Rose Cafe's food seemed quite popular, considering there was a constant stream of customers ordering, and everyone noticeably ordered something different. I really liked the outdoor tables and chairs, located right outside the eatery. It definitely allowed us to enjoy the cool ocean breeze, even though you can't see the water. All in all, Rose Cafe rocks. We were glad to have found this cute place, tucked into a shopping center, no less. Overall, the food was awesome, and the location was super-convenient.

This used to be one of our favorite donut places, but something felt a little different this time…read more I am not sure if they changed their recipe or if it was just this particular batch. We ordered the Boston Cream, Boysenberry, Cinnamon Crumble, Buttermilk Old Fashioned, and Blueberry Lemon. The Boston Cream was one of my favorites. The yeasted dough was delicious, almost like a brioche dough, though I am not sure if that is actually what they use. It was soft, rich, and had a great texture. The cream filling itself was a little underwhelming, but I would still get this one again. The Boysenberry was also really good. It had that nice cakey texture without being overly dry or crumbly. The Cinnamon Crumble looked amazing, but the texture was surprisingly "bouncy." I could not quite figure it out. It almost tasted like a cross between a cake donut and a yeasted donut. Nothing was necessarily wrong with it, but that texture was not my favorite. The Buttermilk Old Fashioned was probably the most dependable of the bunch. It had a nicely balanced hint of nutmeg that made it taste nostalgic and familiar. Sometimes you just want a classic donut that delivers exactly what you expect, and this one did. The Blueberry Lemon was a little bland this time. We have ordered it before, and both of us felt that the texture of their cake donuts seemed different from what we remembered. Still a good donut shop with some excellent choices, but this visit did not quite reach the level we remembered from previous visits. A 4/5 for us this time.
