He also closed out our tab without ever asking if we wanted to keep it open. We tried getting his attention again and waited another 15 minutes. When he finally acknowledged us, he said he'd be right with us, but continued serving the local customers. He eventually served everyone who was local and then told us the bar was closed. When I questioned the situation, he cursed at me and said I should have "fucking came earlier" because he was "fucking busy." At that point, it was extremely difficult not to feel like we were being treated differently because we were people of color and not locals. I understand that bartenders get busy, but the difference in how we were treated compared with the local customers was very noticeable. The only positive thing I can say is that the locals themselves seemed welcoming. It's just unfortunate because we have family and friends in the area, and to visit somewhere in a community where we have connections, only to leave feeling disrespected, uncomfortable, and unwelcome, was incredibly disappointing. No one should have to feel like they don't belong somewhere simply because they aren't a local. And regardless of whether someone is a regular or a first-time customer, everyone deserves to be treated with basic courtesy and respect.
