    Portico
    HoyMay P.

My friend just moved here to independent living. While they do offer assisted living, that is about to change. The place will be under new ownership and they have decided to do away with the assisted living portion. What a shame. Park Terrace was home to Marriott inn years ago. In fact I remarked as I walked in how it felt like a hotel. It has very high ceilings with lots of natural light coming in. When you walk past the portico, the reception area greets you. The reception desk is manned 24/7. Opposite that is a large dining area with booths and tables with chairs. There is also a room which had a bingo game in progress. Going past reception, there is a game room with pool table and puzzles to work on. Just past the game room is a hair salon and clinic open three days a week. All of the stairwells have been roped off. Tenants are asked to use the elevators to go upstairs. Upstairs there is a table and chairs for public use to play cards or board games. There is a well stocked library. In the next room is the gym with treadmills, weights and elliptical machine. The last room is the craft area with large table and chairs. Supplies are stocked next to the wall. Two sewing machines are available for use. There is a very large round pool outside and a water feature. The grounds are kept clean. Staff are very friendly as are the residents. Gated community with plenty of parking spaces. Free WiFi residents.

Park Terrace Senior Living in Phoenix, AZ is a beautiful place to live (https://www.parkterraceseniorliving.com/). Please see the pictures I have attached below. I was just there, and the entire place is resort-like with a campus layout with nice walking trails. The grounds are extremely well-maintained with beautiful birds and the smell of freshly cut green grass essentially year-round. They have all kinds of activities including, yet not limited to, water aerobics, art classes, bingo, cards, pool tables, big-screen movies, routine happy hour, shopping trips, and more. It is a very clean, safe, and caring environment for seniors. The staff is very caring and attentive to the needs of residents and their family members. In my opinion, it is the perfect place to retire and be taken care of, as needed/wanted, which is why I selected it for my relative. He loves it there and could not be happier. Even though I live out of state and cannot visit daily, I feel very confident that he is being well taken care of there. The onsite contractor that provides aid and attendance services is excellent. Since someone asked... They do have designated smoking areas around the campus which are rather nice with comfortable seating. However, those locations are mostly in private areas that are convenient to residents. At the same time, it feels like a smoke-free environment since you never see anyone smoking there. The residents, of course, are not allowed to smoke inside anywhere, so the buildings and apartments are always smoke-free.

    Is smoking allowed by residents?

Hi, smoking is not allowed in the apartments or any of the indoor areas (lobby, activity areas, dining rooms, etc.), but residents are allowed to smoke at least 20 feet away from the buildings. We also have a covered smoking area in our central…

I disagree with Sherry's review in terms of treatment and maintenance. Her review was from 4 years ago and upgrades have been made and I can attest to management and the care that is given here big first rate. My opinion is Sherry had exaggerated expectations. A number of improvements must have been made in the last 4 years as I find it comfortable safe and secure to be here. No it is not a five-star resort but for an assisted living facility which I've been to a few this one is nice. There is the definite difficulty with so many of us in our senior years that need to feel comfortable and well cared for and a paramount necessity for feeling safe.

No one had checked on him, and by the time he was found, he was nearly dead. After his stay in the ER, he was admitted to a rehab facility for three months. During this entire time, he continued to pay rent at Thunderbird. While he was away, his apartment became uninhabitable due to a water leak. People were in and out constantly making repairs. Within a month of his return--still recovering, foggy, and dealing with incontinence--he was served eviction papers. We already had additional cleaning services arranged and a plan in place, but Michael, the director, chose to send court papers directly to my dad without notifying any family members. He knew an 86-year-old man fresh out of the hospital could not advocate for himself in court. It was heartless, to say the least. My dad didn't fully understand what the papers meant and didn't tell us; he thought Michael's threat to call the sheriff was just that--a threat. Thank God for the good people at Cornerstone who reached out to me. I live out of state and had no idea what Thunderbird was planning. The way Thunderbird handled this situation showed a complete lack of integrity and ethics. Please don't be misled by their claims of genuinely caring about the well-being of your loved ones--because in our experience, it simply wasn't true.

There is always staff onsite, and residents are treated with kindness and respect. The owner, Mariana, is the lead staff member, and she cares for every resident as though they were a member of her own family. There is no cookie-cutter approach to life here. Some residents are highly independent and stay busy in their rooms and with visiting family and friends, while others stay visible in a main sitting room watching television and otherwise passing the time. Residents receive healthy home-cooked meals, and a visit in the morning often means being greeted by the welcome fragrance of a chicken stew or other soup cooking on the stove. The house--an expanded, converted ranch house--is filled with light from skylights, and in many bedrooms, arcadia doors through which light spills. There is an unused, but well-maintained and fenced, swimming pool in the backyard, next to a gazebo covered with bougainvillea. Five years ago, my mother had a major stroke and was no longer able to live independently. We found her an (other) assisted living group home in Phoenix, after being dismayed by the highly mixed reviews for larger facilities. She did well at that home for a year, but it was clear, after a more serious fall and major surgeries, that the first group home was not going to work for her once she was no longer as mobile. Lynette's Care Center came to the rescue with all-in-one care: visiting doctors and nurse practitioners, eye care, hair care, and highly personalized assistance with the activities of daily living. Mom lived here for 4 years, until her recent peaceful death at age 87. She always felt well-cared-for, and loved the staff (and the food). Because of Mariana and her assistants, Mom was able to live without pain (and with many fewer medications than when she arrived) for several years more than she (or we, her children) had hoped. It was a good life at an excellent home.
